4.5 stars for a splurge-worthy early Valentine's Day dinner, thanks to a Christmas gift certificate (thanks, sister!). We secured a late reservation for Saturday night, sat in the covered/wind protected outdoor area, and enjoyed very good service with mostly fantastic and creatively conceived food.We started with two cocktails: one a blackberry infused penicillin, a twist on my old favorite drink, with a blackberry and ginger garnish. Tasty, not overly sweet, and colorful, the other was the lady luck with gin, passion fruit, a pile of crushed ice, and a fortune cookie garnish. Insta-worthy for sure.We ordered several smallish plates for maximum sampling and one traditional entree. We started with raw oysters with mignonette, $19 for only 4; the pricing was a bit of a shock to the system to my Maine roots, but still very good quality and of my preferred high salinity. Then, the salt and pepper chicken wings, which were large and exceptionally tasty even to a non-wing lover like me. The raw bar wild salmon crudo with meyer lemon and shiso was just fine. I would have preferred a more citric lemon sauce. The American country ham (we got the Kentucky option) with johnny cakes and pear compote was fantastic, sort of a rural US prosciutto experience and one of our favorite dishes of the meal. Last of the small plates was the crispy fingerling potatoes, with cotija cheese, salsa verde, and pickled red onion. This and the country ham were our surprise favorite apps. For an entree, my Valentine had the grilled pork shoulder steak with kabocha squash on the side and some green (broccoli rabe?) covering the top of the pork steak. The steak got a thumbs up, but the kabocha puree was not as good as hoped for, and we didn't see any of the menu-promised granny smith apples. For desserts, we had to sample both available options, a coffee semifreddo and a deconstructed cheesecake with macerated blood orange. Both were good, the cheesecake was the more unique option but could have benefited from more blood orange. All in all, dessert turned out to be the least favorite course for us.After the last two years of pandemic challenges, it was nice to be out on an unseasonably warm winter night and in a spot with excellent service and a menu from David Chang, a grumpy genius. Strongly recommend for a celebratory night out.
