Excellent Molé
Mexican cuisine is as varied and complex as French, Italian, or Japanese cuisine. Of the regional Mexican cuisines I’ve enjoyed, I love Oaxacan the best. The mountains, plains, seacoast, and indigenous cultures have contributed to an array of dishes made with Oaxacan ingredients that boast complex flavors not found elsewhere. Los Angeles is a popular destination for Oaxacan ex-pats, so when in LA recently, I was eager to find a great Oaxacan restaurant. And I did: Monte Alban (named for the capital of the ancient Zapotec civilization). The salsa that accompanied the fresh totopos was delicious. There’s a wide selection of Mexican beers, but the presentation caught our attention. The glass came with a soft rubber contraption placed over the lip. Our waiter inverted the beer bottle and quickly inserted the neck through a small hole in the center of the device. Very clever. Molé, the complex sauce and marinade, often with a note of chocolate, originated in Oaxaca, and that’s what we came to eat. We were not disappointed. The Molé Coloraito is an intensely flavorful sauce that smothered —but did not overpower— the moist chicken. Monte Alban is on my list for a return visit next time I’m in Los Angeles.

The mole is to die for! This is seriously some of the best Mexican food that I have ever had. The cocktails were so good too!

All the mole varieties (Black, red, green and yellow) are DELICIOUS. We tried the taco de barbacoa con consome (goat taco), mole negro (chicken breast smothered with black mole sauce and rice), and nicuatole (flan with corn, milk and cinnamon topped with a few raisins) for dessert. It was an amazing meal. We will be back soon to try more items on the menu!

Always good food and good service. My favorite is the mole negro. Their flan is also good. I highly recommend.

Incredible Oaxacan food at its finest. It’s in a little strip mall of food businesses and you wouldn’t expect culinary expertise of this caliber, but let me tell you it was outstanding. You must try this place every time you visit Santa Monica

Don’t let the image fool you- you won’t find more authentic flavors and ingredients anywhere around!! Been going here for over two decades and they’ve never disappointed. Friendly staff and casual environment, just how it should be.

If you are craving real food from Oaxaca or if you have never had it, this is the place to go. The staff is friendly and the original and hard to get ingredients are superb. The preparations are traditional and succulent. The Salsa de Carne Frita, chunks of fried pork in a tomato sauce, the salty meat - tasajo - or the Mole Oaxaqueño are all super delicious, They've been at it for 20 years in the same strip mall with the same hard wooden chairs but it is a paradise for great food from one of Mexico's favorite food destinations

When I moved to LA many years ago, I asked a friend of my mother for the best Mexican in LA. She said: "by far Monte Alban." She was right! The food is made by a real cook from Oaxaca. I love their moles, Coloradito, Negro, the Caldo ranchero, the Nopales. The locale is very simple. In contrast to NYC, there are no good upscale Mexicans in LA.

My first experience with Oaxacan style food and I was not let down. Delicious varieties of mole and unique dishes. The guacamole was some of the best I have had. Make sure to try the tacos enchiladas filled with Oaxacan style chicken (blended with mole, raisins and almonds). The staff was very friendly and helpful. Good kids options too.
