Mood Bistro Birgu Reviews from The Last Year
Beautiful palace with gruesome reminders
Easy to find and full of interesting history. Lots to see and it is quite a large place. Loads of steps to climb. Interesting to see in the walls the changes as time went on and they made changes.
To be seen!
Not all rooms of this palace are preserved with their original furnishings. However, you can appreciate the kitchen complete with crockery, the cells of jailers and suspects, the interrogation room and the torture room with some work tools. Along the way, images and paintings, original documents and detailed notes and historical information effectively convey the idea of how the inquisitor and his collaborators operated. Duration of the visit approx. 1.30 am.
Good but could be better
Feel that this could be a better experience with better signage to explain some of the exhibits as well as a map of the museum so that you don’t miss anything. Still good to visit
Something different and fun
Really a good way to see Malta Knights history. It is well done and worth the visit. You can see in 45 min or take longer, it is located very near other major sites. Both kids and adults enjoyed this
Unusual visitors attraction
Very unusual attraction housed in a beautiful building with lovely gardens. I would imagine a practising Catholic would get a lot more out of it than us protestants. The Christmas crib display was nice.
For history lovers
I really enjoyed the visit to this palace, which I also enjoyed completely alone! You immerse yourself in history thanks to the exhaustive and engaging explanations, and you come to understand how much Catholicism permeated the daily life of the Maltese and how much its ironclad application instilled terror in even the most apparently innocent people. The palace is perfectly preserved and the occasional installations do not spoil the atmosphere at all. The prisons and the explanations about the lives of those locked up there were very interesting!
I expected more
I had high expectations but they turned out not to be realised. There is nothing particularly interesting and the route is a bit confusing
Horrible palace.
This palace represents a particularly ugly page in our history. After all, the inquisitor was also appointed in Malta and he stayed for centuries in this palace on the Triq Il-Mina Kbir higher up in the town. It is ugly to see that this palace is equipped with dungeons, torture chambers, a tribunal and on the other hand a chapel. Strange historical building, the visit of which did not really give a good feeling.
Good insight into Birgu and the inquisition!
We went to see this palace on a joint ticket with Fort St Angelo. The good thing was that you didn't have to do both in the same day - that would have been too much culture! It was called the Harbour Combo! There is quite a lot of information on the Inquisition (not the Spanish one!) and how people were treated. The building itself is interesting too - lots of ups and downs!
Beautiful palace
The palace is beautiful and can be explored for a fee. Everything is great to look at. The museum shop is also recommended!
Not much to see
There is a lot of fuss about this house, but there is little to see: a small kitchen (which makes you wonder how a palace is supposed to be supplied from these two rooms), a few panels, a few pieces, the inquisitor's bedroom as the only furnished room, a collection of figures (what does that have to do with the topic?) and then the advertised horrific torture area. Where was that supposed to be? The rope noose and a video? Seriously, that was all?
Fascinating insight into the inquisition
This is an amazing place, and a grand day out if you catch the ferry from Valletta, as it is a short and scenic walk from the landing stage. A fascinating insight into the history of the inquisition, and some incredible artefacts and documents, including an amazing early version of the prophesies of Nostradamus.
About "reaffirmation" of faith !
Inquisition - the "faith" police of the Catholic church in medieval times - arrived to Malta in 1574 and stayed there until the French occupation in 1798. The palace situated in Birgu was the residence of the inquisition , nowadays a museum where the visitor can learn about the institution of the Inquisition and its history in Malta. The palace itself - built originally in 1530 - when the knights arrived to Malta, was refurbished, modified and extended between the 16th and 18th century in a mix of architectural styles getting its current shape. The most work and extensions of the palace was done by the orders of the Inquisitor Fabio Chigi - he remained in history as Pope Alexander VII . Now the visitor will go from room to room - starting with the kitchen and working his/hers way through the levels, seen on display furniture, paintings and sculptures ranging over several centuries, will learn about how the Inquisition was conducting trials and how it was influencing the life of the Maltese. Overall a very interesting museum to visit - not only for Catholics but for everybody who has an interest in history.
