Omakase at Morihiro was amazing! A gorgeous meal, precisely executed, and delightfully delectable. The handmade signature tofu is a special buttery treat. Toro tartare with caviar and shaved truffle? Yes, please! Each dish and piece of sushi is a luxurious piece of art and the chef also handmade the pottery. Service is on point and the non-alcoholic bubbly hibiscus/oolong tea was a unique alternative to beer/wine.

Morihiro was a solid omakase experience, but it's not as intimate as the other elevated omakase experiences in this price range...it was pretty crowded. There were only table seats the day we went, but we still enjoyed our dinner here. I was little a taken aback by the way the unique way the rice is prepared, but it was still pretty good. All the dishes were explained and presented well but overall Morihiro just lacked that wow factor. I think I also just prefer a more intimate omakase experience.

Maybe we are spoiled coming from Miami where the omakase scene is crushing it right now, but this was an unfortunately disappointing experience. The fish/seafood was solid in some aspects for sure but overall just felt kind of basic and not in like an amazing traditional way either. Desserts were very good. Sake options unless you buy a bottle are limited, they don't even let you choose which sake you get if you buy a glass. Only 1 beer choice (sundori), no wine options. The overall vibe of the place is basic too, it feels more like a lunch spot than an elevated "Michelin" experience. We also sat at a table which may have detracted from the potential I suppose, but the sushi bar didn't seem too much different. I definitely don't recommend the table experience at all, you feel more like an afterthought (ie: the chef doesn't put soy sauce on the sushi). It barely cracks Michelin bib gormound level at best for us, we have 1 stars in Miami that give a much more authentic more creative more high end experience. $400/pp and just 2 beers / 1 glass of sake total

My husband and I had a very special dinner here to celebrate my birthday in January 2024. My husband made a reservation about a month prior to coming. We'd both heard good things about Morihiro before and that it had a Michelin star. Morihiro is located on the Main Street of Atwater Village. The restaurant is small and intimate with simple, understated ambiance. We were seated immediately and brought hot towels once we arrived. We had opted for bar seating and I believe the menu between the bar and table seating is slightly different, as we saw tables receiving some dishes that we didn't receive. Service here was professional and impeccable. We received a multi-course omakase that mostly consisted of sushi, with some other dishes thrown in, and dessert and matcha at the end. The sushi here was some of the best of my life. I'd highly recommend visiting, whether it be for a special occasion or just because. They also gave us two small bags of rice to take home that the chef had milled there. The food here was superb, and I'd say it was definitely one of my top dining experiences in Los Angeles.

My Hubby and my FAVE sushi spot in LA!! The ambience is so much fun and the food is bomb.com!!!! We always sit at the sushi bar in front of Mori-San and his team - I highly recommend this vs. taking a table. It's slightly more expensive but super worth it!!!

Wow. This was a perfect omakase experience. The place is nice and cozy with only a handful of tables. The food was incredible and every dish was delightfully different from each other. The service really was outstanding -- the best I've ever had. Literally. Our waiters wiped up the tiniest spill of soy sauce on our table. They'd also fold our napkins for us whenever we got up to use the bathroom. The food came at the perfect pace -- we never waited long between courses and never felt rushed after finishing a plate. When the chef finished serving his chef's table, he even delivered a plate to us as well :) He said he never wants his guests to go hungry, so he offers an additional piece of sushi of choice at the end. He also gifted everyone a bag of rice imported from Japan that he milled himself... Chef Mori is extremely thoughtful in his food, restaurant, and guest, and his sincerity touched my heart. He is also a ceramist so we got served food on the bowls and plates he created himself! I highly recommend coming to Hiromori. I'd definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyI was treated to this place by a friend a while back.
It's crazy. I used to live in Atwater Village like 20 years ago, and never thought it would have a sushi place that rakes in 1K for 2 people, lol! Anyway, they took over half the Vietnoodle bar space and made this nice, quite, unassuming Sushi restaraunt. What you get on the inside is an amazing food experience! Def high end, I loved almost everything I ate, and those things I didn't love I deem as food adventures. That's what this is really, a food adventure. An experience. The service was very friendly, prompt, and attentive. The vibe was nice and quiet. The -1 star is because I don't think it's QUITE worth the money. I have been to other michelline star places that are 1/3 the cost for sure. That being said, if you're rolling in it, or someone else is paying, or *cough* it's a business expense. This place is worth the experience!

Every single detail from start of service to end (around 2 hours) was impeccable. What can I even say- the omakase at Morihiro is an adventure of flavor and texture- even if we didn't like everything put in front of us- it felt necessary and planned and we ate every last bite and would eat it all again. The rice will have you wondering if you've ever had sushi rice before. Mori is a master- What a great way to end the year and kick off a new one.

My husband and I went for a date night and sat at the sushi bar. Enjoyed the cooked dishes more than the sushi. The sushi rice was so vinegary that it slightly changed the taste of the fish. Chef Mori did not interact much; when he looked our direction, he looked past us. We had a female chef that had a snarky look on her face the whole night and looked like she would rather be elsewhere. However, our servers were great and very attentive. Glad we tried it out for the experience but will not be going back. There are other places that are better and more hospitable.

Very friendly waiters. Bar sitting is a little bit better than the table, as expected for omakase. Fresh food. Good presentation. The only thing that I didn't like was gari...

Aside from its location in Atwater Village, Morihiro is a delight for the senses that will have you buzzing for a while.I usually start my reviews with a few words about the space, but in this case, I must start with the staff - they are wonderful. Morihiro has done a great job imbuing traditional Japanese hospitality that one might experience in Japan with a Western sensibility. As soon as we checked in, we were greeted by name. We were led to our seat at the bar, where upon finding out that it was a birthday, the staff changed out a placard from "Welcome" to "Happy Birthday." Our primary waitress was so knowledgeable about the dishes and the sakes, providing just the right amount of information. She was gracious, never intrusive and yet always available at the right moment. The rest of the staff was wonderful as well - holding open the drape that led to the hallway and lining up outside the door when guests were leaving to thank them from coming - very traditional Japanese hospitality cues and quite welcome to experience. The food is top notch - 5 stars. There are countless reviews already about the details of the experience so I'll cover the highlights. The omakase presents many courses and it's hard to keep track after each course. If you get a tuna with truffle, you are in for a real treat. The starter plate of bites that right now includes abalone and roasted local chestnut is amazing. When Morihiro starts making the sushi, you're in for a treat. I found it interesting to see the shari (rice) take on a tinted hue - it's from the vinegar that he uses. The wasabi is freshly grated and note how the staff uses both shark skin and metal graters. The sake pairings are worth the splurge, but I would say that sharing an omakase pairing is sufficient because the pours are generous and the cups are many. The banana dessert was surprisingly delicious and one of the stars of our meal.Parking can be a bit challenging if your reservation is on a Friday or weekend evening. My one complaint is the music selection. It's an odd mix that I would not associate with a Michelin starred sushi restaurant of this caliber. Take it in stride and you will enjoy this culinary adventure.
Be the first to ReplyAnother amazing omakase place.
Parking was super easy in the front or in the lot across the street. We did the same pairing with our omakase and learned so much about the different type of sake. The sushi was very traditional and prepared very well. We also learned that the chef handmade all the plates and cups that he used during dinner. Every sake paired well with the sushi we had and definitely one of my favorite omakases this year. The dessert which was a Japanese whiskey pastry was so amazing that I still think about it. I hope I get to come back here again next year!
Be the first to ReplyThis is an excellent restaurant.
The whole meal was an extremely delightful experience. Service is extremely attentive. Fully deserving the recognition of one Michelin star. All the preparations were done in extremely attentive manner. I sat at the sushi counter in front of the chef, and I decided to go for the most expensive menu. I'm glad I did it. There are pretty sensitive differences in cost for the different menus at the counter or if you're sitting at the table. But still the real full experience is not at the table.

WOW! This place takes you on a food adventure! My boyfriend brought me here as a surprise for our 4th anniversary. I couldn't even guess what the restaurant was because of its nondescript exterior. The front of the restaurant is just a flat brick wall, and only when you look closely, you'd see a tiny little sign at the bottom left: morihiro. The service here is phenomenal. The staff greets you and welcomes you in, leading you to your table, adorned with a little handwritten note: "Happy Anniversary!" Upon looking at the other tables, we saw other notes personalized to the guests who were coming that night, "happy birthday", "welcome back", and so on. The counter was like a front row seating area to a theater - the chefs in the kitchen being the show. It was fascinating watching them meticulously at work. The counter is $400/person, but you are served personally by Chef Morihiro himself, and the experience is 3-4 hours. There was a last minute opening to the counter, which is normally booked, and the table next to us decided to upgrade. Still, since we were seated in the center of the "theater", we still got a wonderful viewing of what was being cooked up.Since everyone's experience will be different, I will just mention some things that popped out at me:- the Gunkan Uni was probably the best uni I've ever had. It was smooth, just the right temperature, and bursting with umami flavor. - The seared kinmedai and baby barracuda were flavors that I've never had before! The searedness made it taste so...creamy! - housemade tofu with shoyu - this sounds so plain jane, but it absolutely wasn't. I don't think I've ever had tofu that tasted so perfect. It was smooth like silk, had the perfect consistency...just...WOW. - the tamagoyaki was ETHEREAL. I have never tasted such light, fluffy, souffle-like tamago. It was a light yet rich sponge cake like texture. I could not get enough. We also got a bonus little dessert - the Chef's Banana! It literally looked like a banana, but the yellow "peel" was white chocolate, and the inside was banana bread! Paired with the ganache...oh MAN! It was divine! I loved the whimsicality of the dish, yet the flavors were intricate and unique. As a little end of the evening gift, they send you off with a to-go box of Japanese whiskey canelle....which we promptly ate at the scene. You must! It is soft on the inside, with a little burnt crispness on the outside. Just perfect.I had requested at the beginning of the meal that I did not do wasabi, but they accidentally gave me it on our first sushi dish. When I mentioned it to them, they were extremely apologetic and promptly made us a new batch. Every dish from there on, they were very diligent about separating my sushi (no wasabi), from my boyfriend's (wasabi). I truly don't mind mistakes, as it is a part of life, but the way they handled their mistake was with the utmost grace, and I appreciated that very much. The staff even personally sent us off as we left the restaurant, holding the door open and standing outside! Thank you Chef Mori and your staff for such a warm, intimate, and adventurous experience! It is no surprise that your restaurant won its first Michelin Star within a year of opening! Truly well deserved! ごちそうさまでした!

TL:DR - An incredible omakase experience that has left an indelible impression upon me.Morihiro is the type of restaurant that elevates the food they are serving. Despite the non-descript exterior, Morihiro's will wow everyone stepping through it's doors. I came here with my girlfriend for our 4 year anniversary. We're both huge sushi lovers and I wanted to surprise her with something amazing. By the end of the night we both walked away feeling like we just transcended this reality. The restaurant might feel a little tight for some, but for me, it felt like a theater. The sushi chefs actors on a stage, framed by wood paneling, and lit warmly. They prepare the night's food in an acrobatic dance that is both precise and hurried. The service is as gentle as a warm summer wind and puts me at ease. Enough poetic waxing, let's get to the food. I'll list out the whole meal below, but the standouts for me were: tamagoyaki, the uni sushi, and the kinmedai (big eye snapper.)The tamagoyaki is nothing like I've ever tasted before. It looks like a slice of castella cake, and has the same fluffy texture, but the taste is definitely egg. There's a sweetness that is like an airy custard with a hint of dashi. Biting into it feels like trying to eat a cloud. There's no weight to it, melting instantly into my mouth. This is the best tamagoyaki I have ever eaten in my life. I can barely believe that it's made of only eggs. The uni sushi was what people hope their uni sushi tastes like. It is the epitome of uni flavor. Creamy with a hint of umami, and without the sea brine or the harsh texture of sand. The seaweed that encased this golden treasure was also beautifully prepared. Still crisp and warm, there is a nice coating of flavor across it that accentuates the flavor of the uni. Together they form a pairing that dances beautifully across my tongue. This is the best uni I've ever eaten!Lastly the kinmedai, or red big eye snapper. Unlike it's more popular cousins the chu-toro or oo-toro, that are known for their creamy soul filling taste, kinmedai is different. It's hard to describe the taste, you kind of just need to eat it. There is a sweetness to the fish and a slightly firm texture. Eating it just feels right. Like all the flavors of my mouth are triggered and I can't stop wanting more. Morihiro slightly sears the kinmedai heightening it's flavor. Just amazing! Here are the other dishes in the order they came out:1. Tofu, shoyu, and wasabi. (House made tofu, with a shoyu from a family company formed in the 1600s. Shiba Numa shoyu.)2. Zenzsai - baby corn, gelatin unagi, roasted zucchini, kabocha, string beans, abalone, and roasted chestnut.3. Ikura, apple, mushroom, uma-dashi (umami dashi), and shiso flower. Kind of like a chirashi dish without rice.4. Sashimi - spanish mackerel, flounder, yellowtail, akami 5. Soup - Matsuake mushroom, shrimp dumpling, matsuba, and a small citrus fruit that I think is a sudachi.6. Nigiri sushi - fluke, amberjack, yellowtail.7. House made tsukemono (pickled veggies): cucumber, asteria daikon (radish), lotus root, and two other varieties of daikon.8. Nigiri sushi - akami, oo-toro9. Nigiri sushi - spanish mackerel, gizzard shad (a silvery fish that is Morihiro's favorite.)10. Nigiri sushi - kinmedai, baby barracuda. Both slightly seared.11. Nigiri sushi - mirugai (giant clam,) amaebi (sweet shrimp.)12. Gunkan sushi - uni and ikura13. Maki roll cucumber with red clam. Tamagoyaki.14. Miso soup15. Dessert: blueberries, strawberries, pineapple pear (one fruit, it's sweet like a pear with a little tartness) and musk melon. The musk melon was just bursting with flavor and is like the sweeter more delicious version of a honeydew melon. These can sell for upwards of a couple hundred dollars in Japan and are given as gifts.16. Pear gratin(?) with yuzu zest. It was like a shave ice that was super good.17. Bonus! We were celebrating our 4 year anniversary and they surprised us with the Chef's Banana! It is a banana bread shaped like a banana coated in a yellow chocolate with white chocolate ganache. It looks exactly like a banana and tastes incredible! This was one of the more playful dishes, but was insanely good.18. They send you off with two Japanese whisky canelle's. We finished both in the restaurant. Soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Overall, the food is impeccably crafted and will leave you craving another round of omakase!
Be the first to ReplyMorihiro is an incredible experience.
From the moment when you walk in and are escorted to your table, to when your server holds the door open for you on your way out this was one of the most unique experiences I've had. For the first time in America I felt transported back to Japan. Aside from the food, watching chef Mori and his team prepare food is like watching art being created. The highest level of care taken with each cut of the knife and rolled ball of rice. The variety of food from the appetizer, to the sushi, to the dessert provides a journey of taste that fuses local California ingredients with traditional Japanese ingredients. The best word I can use to describe the food is beautiful because it looks beautiful and tastes wonderful. Finally, the service could not have been more attentive and personalized. If you have the chance I highly recommend experiencing Morihiro.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an experience! I thoroughly enjoyed my omakase dinner
What an experience! I thoroughly enjoyed my omakase dinner at Morihiro! The location is very unassuming in a small neighborhood on the East side of LA. I get up near here, so it was fun to have a dining experience like this so close to "home". Right at opening time, they open all the blinds in a well orchestrated / synchronized move. The waiters then great you, check you in and get you seated. The guest to server ratio is about 2:1, so the service was really top notch. As for the food... it was absolutely delicious. The use of different ingredients, freshness and the balance of flavors is really what makes it so good. Also, many of the flavors and textures were very delicate so to enable each to shine through is truly an art.We sat at a table right across from the sushi bar. It gave us a perfect view of the preparation of the food. Next time we would probably sit at the sushi bar. I believe the waiter we had mentioned that they get 4 extra dishes. The price is definitely up there, so not for a casual night out. But for a night you are looking for quality, experience and service I highly recommend Morihiro. Also, we ordered the sake tasting which was perfect and complimented the dishes perfectly.
Be the first to ReplyTotally overrated.
Not worth the price. Our table kept on bouncing. Not a Micheline star restaurant. I was in Paris 1 month ago, and went to a Michelin star restaurant. Totally different. Go to Sasabune and have an amazing omasake experience.
