NONONO New York Reviews from The Last Year
Quick service for a weekday lunch! They have some lunch
Quick service for a weekday lunch! They have some lunch specials and the skewers are definitely worth a try. The pork skewer was our favorite, even compared to their chicken combo. You can skip the ramen, the shoyu broth was overly fatty and tasted more like a light bone broth rather than the strongly stewed broth you usually get from a Japanese restaurant. The steamed egg is silky smooth and had delicious layers of naruto, shrimp, and mushroom. I would recommend it if you grew up eating them, my nostalgia definitely made it tastier. Plenty of seating inside, including an upstairs area. Servers were just the right amount of attentive and we didn't feel like we were being rushed.
I'm speechless.
The food was incredibly delicious and bursting with flavor. It's literally melts in your mouth and it taste was so surprising and delightful. I can't wait to come back for more.
Nonono is a place I frequent every time I visit NYC.
Situated on a corner in Manhattan, Nonono is always a perfect meal because the dishes are tapas-style, so you can order as many or as little as you can stomach. Their menu changes ever so slightly depending on the season, though the majority of it remains consistent. My favorite dishes here are the yakitori, hamachi crudo, and wagyu diced beef. The skewers are always so tasty, hot off the grill, and pair well with the tabletop togarashi (which is a blend of spices that cumulatively give the seasoning a slightly spicy, umami, and a touch of smoky taste). The hamachi crudo is the perfect combination of tart, spicy and savory with the jalapeño, orange, onion and pomegranate seed topping (chef's kiss!), and the American wagyu diced beef is so tender, flavorful and always leaves me wanting more! At Nonono, the servers are knowledgeable about the menu, so they are able to provide you with recommendations if needed. They work as a team, so while your main server will take your order, you can ask any server for anything else you may need (whether it be to order another item, or to get your check at the end of your meal). Although I do not always have the same server each time I visit, I have found that all of them have been very friendly and helpful. The restaurant has a modern Japanese vibe inside, and you can see the open grill when you walk in. Stairs to the left side of the restaurant upon entering lead you to an upstairs area that can be slightly tight (refrain from bringing large backpacks or luggages if you can), and the two restrooms on this floor are even smaller (after all, it is NYC!). Apart from these minor major city nuisances, you can always expect a delicious meal from this restaurant, so if you're in the city and looking for a place for delicious yakitori or sushi, this makes a great spot for date night or even casual dining! Also, highly recommend reservations ahead of time since they fill up relatively quickly after they open at 5pm!
I heard a lot about this place from my other friends and
I heard a lot about this place from my other friends and finally found the chance to come here. My friend and I came here for a weekday holiday lunch with a reservation made before hand. We were running a bit late and they graciously said it wasn't a problem. I do recommend making a reservation for larger parties. They have seating upstairs and downstairs. We both ordered the lunch specials each with shoyu ramen, the chicken and short rib skewers and an iced oolong tea. Staff was friendly and we liked that they didn't check in on us too much. The food did take a bit to come out but it came out all at once. The chicken skewers were very tender and the short rib was my favorite. The sauce added additional flavor. The ramen was a bit too salty but the texture of the noodles and chashu were good. The prices were fair for the area, but wish the lunch special was maybe $2 cheaper. It really only saved us like $2-3 vs. had we bought everything a la carte so the deal didn't seem too great. I enjoyed that the restaurant wasn't to loud and we were able to have a good volumed conversation. We were seated upstairs where there were fewer patrons so that probably helped too.
Came to Nonono with a friend for lunch, and while the area
Came to Nonono with a friend for lunch, and while the area was nice, the tables were so close together I could have shared secrets with the family next to us. Privacy? Nonono. The ambiance is beautiful though--super clean, with an upstairs and a bar area. My overall experience was decent but not particularly notable. We were probably at fault here since we didn't really get the recommended dishes that everyone raves about. Also not a big fan of yakitori in general (they were good--just personal preferences!). We started with the egg yakitori for appetizer. They were good--perfectly soft-boiled with a gooey center. My main dish was the Yakitori Don, and it was okay. Wasn't really a fan of the peppers. My friend got the Yasai Udon, and she seemed to like it well enough. After the main meal, we finished off with dessert. We got the Suishingen, the raindrop pudding served with soy bean powder and kuromitsu sauce. It was good and not too sweet--perfect to finish off. The Kuro Goma (black sesame panna cotta, whipped cream, and biscuit) was a little too salty for my friend's taste but it was okay for me. I actually preferred the Kuro Goma over the Suishingen because of the unique sesame taste and the pure creaminess. Overall, based on what I got, I left feeling a little underwhelmed, which was to be expected since we didn't go for the popular dishes. However, I will definitely visit again to try their drinks and get their donburi, cocktail, and that amazing-looking cow roe cream udon. Nonono might have missed the mark this time, but I'm hopeful for a better round two! Here's to round two, Nonono--let's hope you can turn those no's into yes's!
Probably one of my favorite izakaya in NYC.
The menu selection has a great variety of snacks, skewers, and fish. The egg plant is delicious, excellent marinate. We got a bunch of skewers, all which were well thought out and prepared well. We tried a couple of the cocktails, no complaints; pretty good. Service is fast and friendly. The whole place has an industrial/ rustic feel. Wooden seats, wooden table; nothing too fancy. The dim lights create a semi-romantic feel. Definitely a great chill place to come for dinner and drinks.
Great place for Japanese food.
My friends loved it and I did too. I had the ramen which was really tasty and my friends the yakitori. They weren't sharing their food with each other because the yakitori was too good to share...hahaha!
unassuming corner restaurant - clean simple design over 2
unassuming corner restaurant - clean simple design over 2 floors. has bar seating. better for 2-4 people. reservations are a must during rush if over 2 people. food came out fast, service was excellent. Small dish Japanese. the dishes were OUSTANDING with great flavor profiles. favorites: - Eel bowl: perfectly cooked, tons of Eel - Kara Age: lightly fried, perfectly seasoned fried chicken - Salmon Tataki: my favorite dish. subtle flavoring with the avocado sauce elevating the entire dish - salmon ikura don: my second favorite dish - kinoko: the balsamic vinegar added laying to this dish. - beef tongue curry - alcoholic drinks: CHEAP, delicious Good: - meatball skewers: good but no up to dishes above - scallop uni carpaccio: small powerful flavorful bite. The others in the group loved this dish. I liked it but not a huge uni fan. - wagyu diced steak: perfectly cooked and seasoned but didnt stand out. if you like steak I wouldnt hesitate to order this Eh: - Cod roe cream udon: not my cup of tea cannot recommend highly enough. cant wait to go back.
yummy place for a good price (for nyc).
my only downside for this is that the portions were disappointing. i was definitely not full - just satisfied. otherwise, everything tasted great. my favorite was actually the roll. it had all of the right flavors. next time, i would want to try their happy hour deals!
Food was pretty good.
Chicken breast was a little on the dry side. Drinks were good but a touch on the weak side. Lobster good. We were a walk in and were happy because we were there when they opened and they were able to accommodate us upstairs and a pretty nice seat location. There was also a tartare that we had - served with some crisps/chips. Very good taste but would recommend they chill it a bit colder and it would have been perfect. The croquettes were very tasty with the tartar sauce. Very crisp. We did other yakitori that were nice and tasty.
