Wonderful Hotel
We stayed overnight for my partner's birthday and it was a lovely experience. The hotel is very cosy and luxurious and set in a delightful countryside setting. The staff are fabulous and attentive without going over the top. We were upgraded to a room with a four poster bed (Room 8) which was a fair size with a fabulous bathroom. All mod cons, plenty of sockets, USB ports for charging, bathrobes, slipper etc., The courtyard outside the rooms would be perfect in warmer weather for morning coffee or lunch but sadly to cold at the time of our visit We had drinks in the lounge bar with a roaring log burner (very welcome on a very cold evening). Thomas was very knowledgeable about the drinks on offer from Gin, Wine and Whiskey to name a few. You can even do Whiskey tasting if that's your fancy. Dinner in the restaurant was really good as was the breakfast the following morning. You have a choice of a Tasting Menu or A la Carte which is really a good option if there are things on the TM that are not to your liking. The pictures on the hotel's website are very accurate and it truly is a lovely lovely place to stay and perfect for an overnight celebration. It is out the sticks a little bit so if staying longer then you would need to travel to go anywhere else for dinner. We enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to family and friends. Would we stay again? Absolutely!
Be the first to ReplyAfternoon Tea
My husband and I visited for Afternoon Tea. This was to celebrate my birthday. We were met by a staff member on arrival and escorted to the Reception area. We were asked if we preferred to sit inside or outside. Initially, we tried indoors but quickly realised that it may have been cooler outdoors. The courtyard is delightful, very pretty and relaxing. The Afternoon Tea was one of the best we have had. It was a scorching day and neither of us had an appetite due to the heat. We ate the sandwiches and asked if the remaining scone and cakes could be taken home to eat later. The staff were very obliging and wrapped the food in foil. When we arrived home we were disappointed to find that all the food had melted and run into each other, the cheese scone had a thick coating of cream, jam and fondant. It was just one sloppy mess and subsequently, it all had to be thrown away. I was very disappointed, particularly as this was my birthday treat, and I then had to prepare an alternative. The intense heat was a factor and I appreciate that on another day there may not have been a problem, however, I do feel that the food items should have been wrapped individually to avoid everything fusing together. Such a shame as the food was amazing, the service outstanding and the atmosphere and ambience everything I hoped for.

We stayed for 3 nights in August. The GPS found it for us again - just a little patience required on the local single track roads. Staff all friendly and efficient - especially the lovely breakfast ladies. The courtyard setting is so relaxing - given the weather an outside early morning coffee was such a pleasure. Perhaps the only niggle on this experience would be that a Nespresso machine would have been preferred to the sachets provided. We were too early for the breakfast team to provide flat whites! We previously stayed in one of the 1st floor rooms - this time in room 1 - a ground floor twin which was roomy/delightful/classy/comfortable in every respect, especially the bed linen, towels and robes. Excellent shower enclosure rather than a bath, which suited us just fine. Dinners In the characterful restaurant on a par with the establishments quality, i.e excellent. Don’t expect a vast menu - the seasonal menu offered gave just enough choice over our 3 meals to satisfy. The wine list on the other hand is extensive. Breakfast was to a really high standard, both in choice, quality and presentation. As mentioned previously, the breakfast ladies were real stars. Pleasingly the guests were a mix of young and old - i.e. us! Local walks are well documented, with excellent encapsulated route cards provided. For once, whoever wrote the instructions has clearly walked the routes rather than simply interpreting the excellent OS map included on the route card. Highly recommended.

What a delightful place! Set in the most beautiful countryside with the prettiest of courtyards to sit, relax and enjoy a pre-dinner drink. I love how the seating areas are divided by little box hedges and glorious flowers and shrubs. The room was stunningly quirky with bare stone walls and vaulted ceiling. Beautifully clean and well equipped bathroom. The dining experience was certainly different. Canapés are served in the bar area before moving into the breathtaking dining room. A very intimate setting with only a handful of tables so it did feel a little ‘quiet’. We opted for the tasting menu which was very good but left us a little underwhelmed having read the write ups beforehand. We also felt the waiters were trying a little too hard to impress - constant topping up of wine after only a few sips and each course delivered with an extravagant flourish which may impress some but just made me want to giggle! Breakfast was a completely different atmosphere - different staff, different service. They were so chatty and friendly without being overbearing. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay but the jury’s still out on the evening dining experience!

This was our first visit and a Wedding Anniversary treat. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent. We opted for the six course taster menu and each plate was a delight to the palette. Prepared with such care, expertise and skill. The flavours were well balanced and delicious, using local produce and seasonal ingredients. The venue is lovely and the front of house staff were polite and courteous. The chef is to be congratulated on an amazing meal. Thank you.

After a couple of attempted bookings that were cancelled during lockdown restrictions we were so happy to be back. And for a two night stay this time with American friends ! Chef Nick Bennet did not disappoint with a lovely spring tasting menu and great a la carte the following evening. Willem and Pippa provide a friendly and organised welcome and our dog had his own welcome pack and towels. Can’t wait to come back.

Old Downton Lodge is unusual. I was a little apprehensive about driving down a single-track road to the hotel, as I’d had this experience when driving to Gidleigh Manor in Devon (they also have a helipad if I’d known, which would be difficult here). As it turned out, any cars we met were driven by rally drivers, who had no problem with reversing at high speed. On arrival, we had a warm welcome and, throughout our stay, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. After being shown to our room, we settled in. It was great, with a very comfortable, and large, bed and a bathroom to rank with the very best – indeed, the bath was the best I have encountered in any hotel (much better than the one at home). Everything was clean and well-presented. The courtyard seating area is perfect for a cup of coffee, or for a drinkie, and there are paeonies and roses aplenty, together with other shrubs. The tables + chairs are scattered amongst the plants and there are umbrellas for each that allow one to stay comfortable. As this is a bijou hotel, the dining room is small, but the menu and wine list are just fine (the latter being varied, yet unfussy). The food at dinner was OK, but not of Michelin* standard: breakfasts were good (especially the undyed smoked haddock with eggs and chive hollandaise) if limited in choice (a hotel with six rooms can never be like a large parador, where the breakfasts are magnificent). Altogether, a memorable place to stay and highly recommended.

The last stop on our trip round Wales – yes, I know its not in Wales. Lovely room, great rural location and good food. Friendly helpful staff. And the weather was good enough for a glass of fizz in the garden before dinner. A great end to our trip.

In a very interesting location with access via a single track road with limited passing places, we had a tricky reverse for a delivery van on the way out, but you end up in a very peaceful environment which is not easy to describe as it is not like anywhere we have stayed before. It is well worth the effort, the staff are very helpful and the food and service good.

Really loved our stay here! Despite it being at the end of a really wind-y lane (we had to reverse for a van at one stage!) it was fabulous - lovely quiet relaxing place, nothing too much trouble for the staff and the management team were lovely and friendly too! We stayed in Room 9 which was excellent and enjoyed the Al La Carte menu on the Saturday evening after a day at the Ludlow Spring Festival. Will definitely stay here again! Thanks to all who looked after us!

Cannot fault the location, nestled away in stunning countryside. We braved a rather a steep walk but it was worth it. Our room was delightful, tastefully decorated with all needs catered for. The courtyard was divine, the prefect sun trap to enjoy a glass of sparkling!! Food was outstanding, we dined here on both evening and was not disappointed. My main thanks has to be to the staff-what a team! Seamless service, polite, helpful and went out of their way to do what they could. What a credit to the owner. Well done and thank you once again.

A beautiful, tranquil, comfortable, slice of luxurious environment with attentive, but not intrusive, waiters. A superb meal with a glass of bubbly for starters and my husband's food allergy catered for prior to our visit. We couldn't have asked for a more lovely dining experience.

We came for a food tasting today 12/03/2022, with our daughter, her partner and his parents. I cannot praise the venue, the food, and staff highly enough. It was a lovely afternoon with food that was so tasty, and so many choices, it made us all look forward to the upcoming wedding so much more knowing that everyone will enjoy the food. And was reassured having spoken to willem about the plans, a very professional team, who all seem to work well together, would highly recommend. Thank you, and can't wait to enjoy food at the wedding
