Absolutely delicious!
I stumbled upon this restaurant after the touristy place had a wait that was too long. I was able to be seated immediately at Ondine (I was alone). The food was absolutely delicious. The service was well paced (sometimes I feel that when I dine alone they are rushing me out to get a bigger party at a table). The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant. I would definitely recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely NOT worth the money
My friends visiting Scotland booked a table for dinner at Ondine to say thanks for the hospitality. On arrival the restaurant was certainly not overly warm, and I do not feel the cold! We were still taking our coats off when we were asked if we wished drinks or bottled water, what was the rush? On looking at the menu the prices were definitely on the steep side with all (very) small portions of vegetables and potatoes being an additional £6 per portion, making a smallish plate of mussels and chips £24. Very barely noticeable at the bottom of the menu in very small, faint print was the statement that 10% discretionary service charge would be added to every bill - why did they try to hide this? Virtually all the wines were £38 and above, on delivery I had to remind the server that my friend was the host and had ordered the wine, after he had tasted the wine the server then filled his glass, then mine and finally his wife's - very rude service! When the food arrived we had to inform the server who was having what dish - at c£50 for a fillet of fish and 'sides' I expect the server to know who ordered what dish, even my local cafe can mange it. Sadly a very embarrasing meal experience, the food was ok but nothing special, whilst every other area was way below the prices they were charging - DO NOT VISIT, there are far better restaurants in Edinburgh.

Service was terribly horrible. Food was decent, but not spectacular. Would not return, and would advise to chose other places than this expensive place. Doesn't deserve the hype given,

Had the pleasure of having lunch with friends and colleagues in this fabulous restaurant. I have been here many times and have never left disappointed. Last Friday was no different. Very relaxed atmosphere, made all the better by the excellent staff who were always in hand, made us all feel welcome and responded positively to anything we asked for. The food was amazing. We had a variety of starters. I had the fish soup which was so tasty. My friends all said their starters were excellent. For main course the monkfish tempura, with a side of fries was great. Decent portion and well cooked. All in all an excellent Friday lunch. Thank you Ondine

As we reached the top of the stairs we were greeted by big smiles. Our jackets were taken and hung away. We were shown to our table and offered water. With in a few minutes our server had arrived to take our drinks order and offer us menus. We all chose from the special lunch menu, with a Fish soup The salmon And three of us going for the scallops with the best accompanying sauce ever. All five of us then chose the same main meal which was the monkfish tempura, chips and Vietnamese dipping sauce. Sweets were offered with four of us partaking with one coffee. I’ve been to ondine on many occasions and the restaurant, the staff the food has never failed me or my guests. The full menu also looked fantastic with a varied selection to chose from. Unfortunately I can’t comment about the wine list as we all drank soft drinks. Over all I’ve rated this restaurant 5/5 and in my opinion is a wee gem in the heart of edinburgh. D
Be the first to ReplyAlways an amazing experience!
I have had many an outing to Ondine and I think it just gets better and better! Warm and friendly welcome by such polite and compassionate staff. Excellent prompt service. Staff had extensive knowledge of the menu and knew what to recommend. Food to very high standard and tasted amazing as always! Well worth a visit if in Edinburgh!!
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding and super tasty
My daughters choice for her 20 birthday family meal as she had missed the lobster thermidor whilst abroad. Ondine never fails to impress, superb food and service. The team really looked after her as they were aware it was a special occasion. She loved the valentine day cocktail she was given to sample. Still a great atmosphere, they have done a fantastic job of minimising the effects of the scaffolding round the whole building which is obviously outwith their control. Will he back very soon
Be the first to ReplyComplacent - far below average
We were excited to sample the cuisine at Ondine which had been recommended to us by friends. Sadly our experience was not a universally positive one and hence this review. Upon entry we were seated in the middle of this busy restaurant the atmosphere felt hard from the off with the bar being so tall and the tables so low it felt a little claustrophobic. We ordered drinks and food and that’s where the real problems began. Starters turned up which were excellent, those being tempura monkfish and fish goujons. We were excited about what would arrive next. Then for mains our table ordered one lobster Thermidor and three lemon sole. One lobster and one lemon sole turned up and whilst waiting for the others to arrive the waiter came and removed said main courses because they were actually for another table. That’s fine mistakes happen however the lobster and the sole was taken briefly back to the kitchen and we watched on in sheer disbelief when they appeared to be delivered to another table in our sight line - having cooked both dishes myself it’s simply impossible that if these were in fact the same plates of fish that they had been freshly cooked. Then ours arrived - my lobster was dry and fairly tasteless and my friends described the lemon sole as just average. Such a shame when it’s so simple a to get fresh fish right. We had ordered some tender stem broccoli which arrived and smelt so bad because it was blackened/charred/burnt that we sent it back only for it to arrive again after we had finished but cooked the same way so of course we left it. Staff weren’t apologetic given the multitude of problems although the broccoli didn’t appear on the bill thankfully. This please could and should be brilliant - it wasn’t for us.
Be the first to ReplyThe most delicious seafood and the warmest hospitality you could experience!
I was here with friends for lunch this weekend and we had the most lovely time from start to finish. As soon as we walked in through the door we were greeted with smiles and a very welcoming atmosphere by the staff. We were very well looked after throughout the meal and the service was excellent. I had the monkfish roast and I was blown away! The freshness and quality of the food was fantastic as was the wine. I also can’t stop thinking about the lemon sole goujons which were unbelievably tasty along with fresh tartare sauce-yum! Also the cocktails were absoloutely spot on. This was my first visit to Ondine and I can safely say it was a pleasure from start to finish and Probably one of the best meals I have had out in a long time. It really was the perfect place to unwind and relax and that is a testament to the hard work and love that is clearly poured into this restaurant everyday by Roy and his team. Thank you for our delicious meal at Ondine, I absolutely cannot fault this restaurant and I will very much look forward to coming back soon!

Brilliant lunch at Ondine top quality food with great staff one of our party said it was the best steak she'd ever had
Be the first to ReplyGood but pricey
Overall pleasant experience. Nice interior, polite and professional staff. We ordered a steak and a hot shellfish platter to share. The stake was brilliant. Properly cooked, really big and juicy rump. £35 is a fair price considering the size (400 g). The shellfish platter tasted very good. It was enough for 2 people but was it worth £110? I was told half a lobster was included but it was not. There were 4 langoustines, 2 crab legs, 2 scallops, 2-3 oysters , 2 razor clams and a fair handful or two of mussels and cockles. To my taste the price should be £50-£55, we all know the price of fresh mussels which is half of the platter. Unless you wish to add the whole ,not half, lobster which is £55, then it will be worth £110. By the way the menu on their website is different from the one in the restaurant, both items and prices. Don’t be fooled by price of £100 for the platter worth £50 ;)
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced
Very convenient setting for tourists, being central beside The Royal Mile. Not a vast menu, but this is not always a bad thing. Quite enough choices.
The food was very good, as was the service. The only issue was the pricing. I suspect the location is costly to the owners and this must be passed on to the customers but - to charge almost £170 for four main courses of lemon sole was just too much. Add to that the fact that the main courses required additional sides (£5 for a tiny sleeve of fries) and you will see that this is not a restaurant to visit unless you have money to burn.
I doubt I would return, unless my lottery ticket came up trumps of course…
Best Seafood in Edinburgh
We are never disappointed when visiting Ondine. We were back again and found the same professional service and delicious food as always. A perfect evening!
Be the first to ReplyFood is good but the service is extremely cold
Doesn't matter how good the food in a restaurant is, if the service is bad it will ruin the whole experience.
Unfortunately that was the case. We went for dinner here reccomended by a chef friend of ours but from the moment we stepped in the only thing we could really see was how cold everybody working there was.
From the greetings at the door to when our orders were taken, never a smile, it just seemed that nobody wanted to be there really.
The food itself was quite good but then again, not once someone came to check if everything was fine, not for the starters, main course or dessert.
We left pretty disappointed to be honest, because the food was really nice but a nicer service really makes all the difference.
I work in a restaurant myself so probably I was just unlucky to have dinner on a "bad night" for the floor staff.
Great food but cold service
Dined at Ondine in a party of 4 early on Valentines Day. The food itself was great, the oysters particularly, but thanks to the EXTREMELY brisk service it was difficult think anything but that the staff wanted our party out as fast as possible to keep the tables moving. It’s hard to enjoy a meal when a 2hour slot (which we were called and reminded of that day) was condensed into perhaps 1 hour and 10, and we didn’t feel able to order dessert or any after-dinner drinks as it was so obvious that the staff wanted the table back. The food was really enjoyable and I appreciate that Valentines Day is a busy day for all restaurants, but it’s hard to appreciate the positives when you’re being rushed out the door.
Be the first to ReplyDeeply Disappointing
We booked well in advance to celebrate my Birthday . It was our first visit based on a recommendation and in the knowledge that the owner / manager of our local hotel in Grandtully used to work here .
We were deeply disappointed . No pre dinner drink was offered and when we did ask if we could order one it was brought and our food order asked for . We explained we would like to enjoy our aperitif before ordering but were assured if we ordered we would have a long enough pause before our starter arrived . We ordered and within minutes our starter arrived and we weren’t even half way through our drinks . We asked for a pause of 20 mins or so before our main , the kitchen was asked and agreed yet within 10 mins our main course arrived .
The food was fine though average and over priced , the wine was good but the service poor and the rush thoroughly spoiled my 60th Birthday .
I cannot understand why Ondine has been so highly rated . I would not recommend and would rate it very average . There are other restaurants in Edinburgh who specialise in fish and shellfish far better than Ondine and would make someone’s special evening just that .
Anniversary Meal - Perfect
We had a simply wonderful meal at Ondine to celebrate our 8th anniversary. The service from the start was perfect and the food was exceptional.
The oysters are a must and the crab scones were delightful. We both had the lobster which was sweet and succulent but be prepared to get your hands dirty, maybe a bowl of water to wash your hands after would be beneficial.
My wife had a dessert and it looked decadent.
Would definitely return when we were come back to Edinburgh
Quite average in every way.
People seem to think this is "THE" place for Sea Food in Edinburgh, I disagree.
Last time even the chips were a failure.
The restaurant decor is so dull, the Gents toilet minute, china table ware dull, every time the front door opened my legs were chilled by draft, perhaps the ventilation??
Fish soup @£12 DULL.Scallops and Crispy Oyster enjoyed.Cod and chips @£17 very pleasant with dull mushy peas ant sauce. Green leaf salad @£6 dull.
Bottle of Distant Noises Chardonay @£42 VERY HIGH mark up.
Trifle @£10 not great.
Service friendly, but it took 4 people to clear empty plates for we two!
This restaurant is a "Cash Cow "not offering value, I know so many more enjoyable places in Edinburgh.
Lovely seafood
We’re a couple who visited on a Saturday night. COVID rules applies. The entrance is obscured currently with scaffolding around it. Have to go up a flight of stairs, I have seen a lift as well for those who have mobility issues. The welcome was warm and comforting. The waitress showed us to our table (bar table) as this was the space available at the time of booking. It’s comfortable enough to have a multi course supper. Swivel bar stools, perfect for a those who are still a “child” at heart, that’s me! LOL! …
Digressing, we had G&T to start off the evening - beautiful. Then our starters: seafood soup & tempura squid (calamari basically) - both were excellent! Mains we had a roasted platter of crustaceans - exquisite! We chose to have just one serving of chips & young stem broccoli- both were delightful. We didn’t have any room for dessert. Hence, ended up with espresso martini & coffee for the man.
The decor was top standards too. The bar table is equipped of hooks to hang your coats etc. just underneath the table. The toilets were clean and the staff were accommodating & approachable.
The price tag was a whopper! However, we enjoyed the experience and most of all the seafood. Highly recommend this for those seafood lovers & lovers of fine dining.
Best crab I have ever eaten!
Ondine defines what a seafood restaurant should be. Being French I have been eating seafood since I started to eat solids! The issue in Scotland is that most establishments calling themselves seafood restaurants don’t really have seafood on their menus! Fish maybe but little real seafood. Ondine is the only place where one can order a real plateau de fruits de mer ( seafood platter) the way it should be! Check the menu. I was there 3 weeks ago after the Scotland v Japan rugby match and guess what? I saw two tables of Japanese people eating the plateau de fruits de mer! I quickly spoke to one of the tables and ask them how was the food? The answer was Oichi desu, ichi ban ( very tasty and number one).
Now I had the crab claws starter and that was probably the best crab I have ever had, and I have been eating the stuff for 60 years! Roy and the team deserve lots of recognition for a great atmosphere and amazing seafood!
Simply superb!
