First visit in 6 years❗️
I want to visit there every time I come to Kyoto, but during the high season, you have to make a reservation about a month in advance to be able to get in at your desired date and time, so this was my first visit in 6 years. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the price of each item is relatively cheap, so for the two of us, we each had 3 drinks and ordered 7 dishes for 10,250 yen including tax! I was able to spend a very satisfying time.

Typical Japanese ikazaya. Very good food, attentive service and delicious draft beer and sake. Highly recommended.

Finally got a reservation to eat here, so I was excited to see what the hype was about. First of all, it is loud and very boisterous. Big hearty greetings and lots of energy. Food, meh. Over salted and not that fresh tasting. English menu is a quarter of the Japanese menu, so I saw other tables getting items not on the English menu. But I think the worse part to this mediocre meal, was the fact that the bar/server, was picking his teeth (with braces) the entire time he was serving customers. It was really distasteful to see this, and made us loose our appetites. Despite the hearty greetings on the onset, the service was not warm nor friendly at all. I received friendlier, and more hygienic service at a combini! We have had better meals elsewhere, I would say this was the worse dinner we had in Kyoto, and Japan for that matter!

This restaurant was recommended to us and we were lucky enough to get a reservation for the same evening. We had a great evening - the people in the restaurant are very friendly and welcoming. The menu is in Japanese we opted for the set menu at 3000 Yen pp. This was a great choice - the food was excellent, well prepared and very tasty. We had several courses and liked all of them without exception. Highly recommended!

Stepped in one night and it was full, so we made a reservation for the next evening. Surpassed all expectations! Not a typical izakaya as it is more dynamic, modern and part of the group that abuses by farm-to-table philosophy. Very friendly, happy staff, English may not be primary strength but hospitality more than compensated for it. We asked to recommend dishes and sake they we so happy to, guided by one question: were we hungry? We were. Sashimi, tender chicken, fermented beans were served first, moving on to incredible mushrooms in soup with shellfish. Wagyu wrapped celery packs a lot of flavor, and it’s mesmerizing to watch everything being prepared sitting by the bar by young and very skilled chefs, who also double as waitstaff. For pre-dessert we were hungry for just one more something and asked for potato, seeing them in vat of dashi. Done to their recommendation it was a perfect bite of savory potato with creamiest housemade mayo, topped with raw ham, really simple yet incredibly delicious. For dessert their tea ice cream was fantastic, as was recommended pudding. A special note on smoothies they make-done with seasonal fruit they pack so much flavor, picked avocado that had a lot of seasonal peach, fantastic flavor. Overall had the most amazing night, filled with laughter, a little google translate, attempts to read some Japanese via knowledge of Chinese and trusting their taste and recommendations, and it didn’t disappoint. When we are back to Kyoto, we will definitely come back to Onikai!

I tried getting a reservation to Onikai several times. I called from the US, only to be told that reservations are only available 30days prior. So I called 30days prior to the day I wanted to reserve, they told me they were fully booked. If they just opened the reservation for that 30 requirement, how could they be booked, etc etc. I tried walking up to make a reservation, only to be turned away. They only want Japanese locals to eat there. I get it, Kyoto has too many tourist and they want to make sure the locals can enjoy their food, etc. Then, why not move their shop from the heart of nishiki market area and go somewhere a little further away. Unfortunately, some establishments in Kyoto are not friendly or are hostile to foreigners. Perhaps they shouldnt be in that sort of business then?
