Such a cute little fish market to get some quality cuts!
Such a cute little fish market to get some quality cuts! I absolutely love going out for sushi, but I also love having it at home (I had a salmon sashimi birthday cake once) - I'm so glad I stumbled across this spot in New York. This is going to be my go-to for getting fresh, delicious fish to eat at home. The chirashi bowls also looked great, so I'd love to try those for a picnic somewhere once the weather gets warmer. The shop itself is very small, basically just a shelf of some products and the register, so just note you may have to wait outdoors. A lot of people also pre-ordered for pickup, which I'll likely do next time I come back as well. A huge yes to this place! Will definitely be returning next time I get a hankering for some good fish.
Be the first to ReplyBeen dying to try this small fish market in East Village.
They have a variety of fish and options of sashimi, sushi, rice boxes. It's all take out but definitely can walk to the nearby park to have a small picnic since the weather in NYC is getting warmer! - Sushi Deluxe ($32): The pieces of fish were so generous and I loved the salmon & scallop! The price is around $4 a sushi but the sizes of them are HUGE. 5/5 - Hokkaido Bento Deluxe ($35): The ikura was a bit fishy imo and I wish there were a little more uni. The bowl itself was good but I think the sushi deluxe was more worth it for the price! 4/5 Overall this place is great to go to for a quick sushi fixe and wants good quality sushi! The outside is also super cute! The place is small so make sure to order in advance!
Be the first to ReplyI took a sushi making class and was super underwhelmed.
They admitted they sold out of most of their fish, so our class didn't have much to work with. We got lean tuna, salmon, and mackerel (the cheapest fish). She felt bad so she offered some older Uni, but it's was rancid and she kinda agreed. Definitely not worth the money for old fish and a lame lesson.
Be the first to ReplyOrdered omakase take out and I was so disappointed.
I really wanted to like this place because it delivered to my area and I don't like picking up omakase and taking it home. The fish tasted old, chewy, and dry. The rice tasted really chewy and old. I usually save the best for last and the uni piece in my order tasted like the bottom of the ocean and rancid. I also ordered 1/4th a lb of ikura and it was overly salted. I seriously wish it was better because I wanted to order here regularly but definitely not worth the money I've spent and I could have picked up something better. I found a bone in one of my sushi pieces and I spat it out. The other pieces were so sinewy I spat them out as well it really ruined my meal.

While I entered Osakana with high expectations, my visit left me disappointed. Despite its reputation as both a fish market and sushi spot, the quality of the fish, especially in my chirashi bowl, didn't justify the price point. I encountered a few chewy bits of fish, which was disappointing. It seems the social media hype didn't quite align with the actual experience. The bowls are beautiful though!

My experience at this sushi spot left me feeling disappointed. Despite the hype I'd seen on social media, I found the sushi to be just okay. The overall taste didn't quite meet my expectations, and nothing stood out as particularly great. One issue I encountered was the excessive amount of rice accompanying each nigiri. While the fish pieces were of decent quality, many had a chewiness that didn't quite appeal to me. I understand that it's to-go sushi, so my expectations weren't incredibly high, but I've had better experiences elsewhere. Overall, while the sushi was passable, it didn't leave a lasting impression, and I likely won't be returning.

Was craving sashimi of just a ton of salmon and some yellowtail. This salmon!!! Was!! So!! Fatty!! Loved the generous portions of yellowtail as well. Not shown is some mackerel which I preferred over the yellowtail actually. Such great quality and great value :)

The presentation of the bento boxes is beautiful but the sushi is terrible and very chewy. Too bad, really wanted to like this place. Will definitely not come back.

It's expensive but worth for a bougie to-go lunch!

My favourite new sushi spot if I want that bento box that brings me back to Japan. The sushi here is extremely fresh, and their homemade soysauce is one of the best I have had state side. The prices are also reasonable too for the amount you get in all the bento boxes. Just reminder to order from them in advance because they are a tiny place and it normally takes them about 20 minutes to make a walk in order. Heavily recommend to everyone!

I really wanted to make a rice bowl of sashimi I really enjoyed so I pick and chose from their "fish for sashmi" part of the menu. It was a literal dream having a chirashi bowl of sushi I really really wanted. The staff is really nice and they work to serve you the best quality fish. I originally ordered the salmon but they called me ahead of time to let me know that they receive fish on a daily basis and the salmon for today was not up to their standards. I was able to replace it with anything else on the menu :)
Be the first to ReplyHad such a great at home hand roll night with my friends.
The fish was so fresh and reasonably priced. We got about 1/4-1/2 lb of each fish we wanted. I recommend calling your order in ahead of time on holidays since they will sell out of certain fish

I purchased some fish, pickled radish, and Shiso leaves for some at home hand rolls and the service was excellent! They were able to make recommendations on fish and the amount to get and were on the nose. Prices are pretty standard and I look forward to trying the sushi that they make in house soon.
Be the first to ReplyI was sooooo excited to try this place for years.
I ordered Tokyo market sushi. Surprisingly sushi rice was NOT great. It was not moist and soft. It did not melt with fish in my mouth. I was dry and hard. I can't believe this place is run by Japanese chef. Fish quality was good but not great though. It's mediocre in Japanese standards. I'm a little disappointed with the rice. Secondly I replaced something with Uni over the phone. I wish they told me in advance they were going to charge extra for it. Overall, good place to try.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible experience with customer service!Have heard great
Terrible experience with customer service!Have heard great things about Osakana online. We placed an order online for pickup at 4:30. We got to the store and stood at the front counter for 5 minutes before someone acknowledged us. There were 3 employees working and we were the ONLY customers.I told the worker that I had a pickup order and gave my name, his response was "just to let you know we are pretty much out of everything." I again said that we placed an order online, he then says "what's your name?" After giving it to him again, another employee in the back of the store yells out"the only fish we have is from last year," it's January 2nd. The first guy then looks in the fridge and then goes into a side room without saying anything and doesn't come out. We waited another 5 minutes before leaving without our order or any acknowledgement from the employees. This is the worst experience we have had anywhere in the city.

Can't comment on the restaurant side, but as an amateur sushi chef, I was quite excited to discover Osakana's wholesale fish market. However, the most disappointing part was realizng the lack of interest they have on the "customer experience" side. I recently purchased over $150 of salmon, scallop, sea bream, etc. and unfortunately, was underwhelmed. While they have an amazingly wide selection of fresh fish - much more than you'll find at H-Mart or Mitsuwa - In my experience, the flavor/quality of the fish was quite mediocre. The scallops were great. No complaints. However, the salmon belly/toro was nowhere near as 'fatty' as the same cut at Mitsuwa, nor did it compare to any average omekase. The sea bream was stringy and chewy, and the salmon roe was too salty. After directly emailing them, twice, and providing some feedback, they've so far ghosted me. Which is quite disappointing. Especially, since I was a first time customer. I'll probably give 'em one more shot, but, at this point, not expecting much.

Osakana is a lovely small fish market that offers plenty of dish to consume ordinarily, but also gives you versatile ability to turn it into something better.I opted for a 0.75 Deluxe Sashimi Box for $45, which had 7 kinds of fish, to make Omakase at home with! I was really pleasantly surprised with the quality and quantity of the fish, and what we were able to turn it into. I am aware that they offer a DIY option, but that appears to be more expensive, and have less quantity and variety. We also got some fresh wasabi (only $3!), sweet shrimp, and tuna to pair along and for ~$80, managed to make a fulfilling Omakase meal! Highly recommend Osakana to source fish for sushi at home!

A cute and delicious little sushi shop in East Village! They also have their OG location in Williamsburg. This is a grab and go place and I love that it is ordering ahead online for pick up, it makes everything easy and seamless. I ordered the Hokkaido First Class Bento and the Sashimi Deluxe - which are both great choices! Hokkaido Fish Class Bento was my favorite of the two sets and it came with quality pieces like red crab, salmon, scallop, toro, ikura, and uni. The scallop and toro was incredible! The scallop was sweet and the citrus lime was a nice touch to it. Toro was melt-in-my-mouth amazing! Ikura was my husband's favorite part and there were plenty. Red crab was also really nice and sweet with the sushi rice. I highly recommend this bento box, it's really delicious!!! Sashimi Deluxe came with beautifully cut quality fish pieces. It had mackerel, toro, salmon, hamachi, and etc. This is a perfect meal for anyone who wants to go light and don't want the carbs! I thought it was really cool that they host private sushi classes here. They also sell fishes by the pound for anyone who wants a sushi/sashimi party at home! I can't wait to come back to try other items on their menu! :)

When I showed up to pick up my order (the fourth in a month), it included a package marked "2 botan ebi" which I didn't order but I thought they were throwing in a little something extra to be generous (perhaps to make up for making me wait 20 minutes extra because they were running behind... perhaps because they got my order wrong and ruined the entire purpose of my visit... perhaps because I've been a frequent customer and they wanted me to feel appreciated so that I would continue returning regularly), but, nope, she said THAT'S NOT FOR YOU and yanked it away...I'm really not a fan of their "you get what we give you" policy. They need to have an inventory system which is constantly synchronized with their online ordering platform. After all, it's a tiny shop which does a huge amount of sales online. But multiple times now, I've shown up and they have said "we ran out of that" yet they accepted my order and didn't bother telling me until I showed up. My grievance with this strategy of theirs is that I live 90 minutes away, it is a 180 minute commute for me to come here, and their prices are quite high, so when I order something and commit a large chunk of my day as well as spend lot of money, at the very least I expect to get what I ordered... Today she said, "I was going to call and tell you, but I didn't" and NOTHING was done to make it better. The fish quality is exceptional, but when you ask them to cut it for sashimi they do an embarrassingly bad job at it. Not quite demonstration quality, which is what you'd expect based on their very high prices... And they give out the exact same soy sauce & wasabi packets as very cheap places do...

WOW!!!This place is amazing and just what the neighborhood and I needed, (Although it is dangerously too close/up the street!) Incredible selection of sushi grade fish and seafood ready to take home and slice, roll, etc. They also sell all the necessary components - Nori, Wasabi, Ginger, Soy - whatever you need.Oh... they also have sushi classes!!!Turkey was never a family thing so this year's Thanksgiving it was sushi.

Really great store with quality sashimi! It's a quaint space, you walk in and order what cut of sashimi you'd like (by quarter pound, unless otherwise stated). ย You can also order the sashimi or sushi package and they assemble it there for you so it's super fresh! ย I think they also had a ramen set.I had the sashimi set for one and it was amazing. ย I also got the himono, and pretty excited to cook it (they have a selection of fish to be cooked at home).Definitely recommend and will be back!

So, Mishima was my go to sushi restaurant but it was family owned and the owner/chef retired. ย Oskana, after years of looking is my new favorite - hands down. ย They cut the fish in front of you. ย There is no place to sit, but if you go north on ย 2nd a few blocks you hit Stuyvesant Square Park - a lovely place to eat.
