Panela is on a side street in downtown Lowell and definitely looks like a hot spot for dancing with the way the setup is (bar tables on the perimeter and an enclosed bar in the center). We came in for lunch and I ordered the avocado shrimp arepa while the SO ordered a desayuno with chorizo and queso. The meals were simple but really delicious -- I had no complaints about the arepa -- filled to the brim with avocado and plump shrimps. Service was quick and attentive and staff were friendly. Quiet on a Saturday morning so wasn't sure if they were open but all was well!

Went there last month , one of the best food experiences I've had in lowell , it felt like it was in a different league , definitely recommend this place
Be the first to ReplyGreat food! Great service.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I'm looking forward to going back.

After the epic failure of a meal earlier in the day, I had to find something to remedy the taste buds. As I began to drive back towards Boston, I searched for possible options along the way that were recommended restaurant stops for their food quality. This Colombian restaurant popped up on the list and immediately beckoned a slight detour to visit. As New England states are so tiny compared to the West Coast, it wasn't long before I exited the freeway and parked along the street outside Panela. While the restaurant had a large space (noticed later there was a dance floor) and an almost equally large bar area, there were only a couple patrons that day - nursing their beers and quietly chatting. Service was fast and prompt and menus were on the table before I even sat down. Water showed up shortly before I was given a little more time to peruse the menu. It was an interesting menu and well thought out. I had no idea what to order so I just followed my gut on what I felt like gorging on (and was glad I did). I won't go much into dissecting each dish. But I can tell you that the flavors were balanced and pleasant. Each bite beckoned more until the plate was empty. I couldn't stop myself. I had to keep going on everything disappeared from the table. It's one of those times that you're not claiming a dish to be perfect in whatever culinary pedigree BUT that it's so balanced in flavor that your palate is tickled in all forms. It was a tongue-gasmic moment and immediately remedied the most boring meal on earth that I just had earlier today. PS. Researched the background of the restaurant later on. Now everything makes sense. I applaud your need to create and represent. Cheers.

Guys. This food was amazing. The little arrepitas appetizer was my absolute favorite- but the empanadas were also perfect. We loved them!!! But the arrepitas - please don't change them from the menu!!!!! I've just never had any base made with sweet plantain and it was phenomenal. Barely sweet and mostly savory. So good. Thinking about making the 30 minute drive to eat that again next weekend . We sat outside, it's a lovely little casual spot downtown. But the food is off the charts good. Usually authentic Latino food is hearty but sort of lifeless or feels so heavy after. Their stuff was bright and a really good mix of textures and balance of flavors. LOVED IT. So happy this place exists. You can tell their kitchen knows what they're doing and has creativity. Our server was super sweet. Great experience. Adding it to my list of Lowell Favorites!!!! Thanks, Panela!

I've been meaning to check out Panela for awhile, and so glad I did! I did takeout & had the beef empanadas & the arepa avocado lover, and both were delicious. The empanadas had a great crisp and smooth filling, and the arepa itself was delicious w/the avocado & pickled onions. I did have pork belly as my protein on the arepa, and the meat was quite tough/difficult to chew, although also very tasty. Maybe it was just this recent batch, but I would definitely check Panela out again to try something else. So, more like a 4.5 here. :) The service was also very kind, and that is also always worth coming back and supporting a great local biz in town. Recommend!

Working in Lowell, MA for a special event and decided to get lunch from here with three colleagues. We were told to sit where we wanted. It took about 20 minutes to receive menus and only because we had to stop the server that walked by our table about 10 times to ask for them. (In all fairness, there were about 8-10 other people/groups that came in moments after we did and it was obvious they are not normally prepared for something like that.) After receiving the menus it took another 10-15 minutes to have our orders taken. Meanwhile, all the other tables are receiving their drinks and some even started getting their food. From the time we arrived until food was starting to be delivered it was over an hour and ten minutes of wait. We had to pre-game and ask for our checks AND to go boxes before the food even came out. Once the server realized we were not going to eat on site the rest of the food was delivered in boxes. I am certain that if I am ever in Lowell, MA again I will definitely not be going here . Which is sad because the food was pretty good.

Food is absolutely delicious! Our server, Cely was great and provided spot-on suggestions. My daughter and I have food allergies and this restaurant provided so many options without sacrificing flavor. I highly recommend Panela!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food!!! By far the best empanadas I've ever had.
The food and drinks are so great. Mr. Leo behind the bar was a great server and advertised all the events through the week. They have free salsa classes Thursday and $5 bingo on Friday!
Be the first to ReplyABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.
Very good friends of mine highly recommended this place several months ago. Took my wife for a late Valentine's Day dinner and it did not disappoint. Service and food were amazing. Everything was MUY BEUNO but the highlight for us was the BARCA DE PLATANO. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is exactly what you want when you are trying
This place is exactly what you want when you are trying Colombian cuisine. It's not fancy looking but the food is exceptionally fresh and the spices are so spot on! The Panela chicken sandwich was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten! The bollo camaron y coco was such a joyful surprise. The food really was very good. If you are curious what good Colombian food is, this is the place for you to go! Also the vegetarian empinadas had such incredible textures.

The food was pretty good but they're starting to make their portions smaller and charge more. We came in here on a Thursday around 6 and waited and waited to be waited on. Finally we pulled up to the bar to order and ate there (not what we wanted). Food and drinks were fine; great flavors. Nice bartender.

The food and ambiance are very enjoyable with traditional Colombian dishes...I have also been to the Latin dance classes that are held twice a month...unfortunately the male dance instructor is extremely rude and his dance technique is not very good.

Took the waiter,s suggestion and it was all very good. As far as cocktails I asked for a caipirinha and they didn't know it, but they made a wonderful one. Only complaint was that the staff were a bit on the slow side, despite it being a slow night. Definitely try this place!! We will return.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a great meal.
Aaron was a great server and helped us navigate the menu as we had never had Colombian food before. The food was delicious, and we sampled some Colombian drinks, as well. When we had a small problem with our order, he quickly took care of it and everyone was satisfied. I would highly recommend a visit.
Be the first to ReplyGreat small place.
I was visiting the area on business and found this corner spot while searching the area. Decided to try it out and was not disappointed but the place only had a few people in it and mostly at the bar area. Food was good and service.
Be the first to ReplyI'm having a difficult time putting into words my sincere
I'm having a difficult time putting into words my sincere appreciation and love for the service amazing food and kindness we experienced here from the Server, Aaron, and Co-Owner Vivian who accidentally photobombed on my phone when she was trying to take our group picture (I still don't know if it's her because she did not introduce herself but she certainly got my Moms fish selection in a hurry!) AND the Patrons eating at this wonderful establishment! So much to say . We happened upon this Restaurant by luck and Yelp as we were looking at a place nearby but the streets were packed with an Alice in Wonderland treasure hunt on this day. It was apparently sold out and a big event . We saw the positive Yelp reviews so we opted to check it out. Inside was a wood dance floor and salsaMusic was playing at the bar where we were kindly greeted by the staff . Outside we saw a table but didn't want to block access to the exit with my moms wheel chair. Not a problem. The patrons there offered to sit closer so we could enjoy the table in back. We are truly grateful as it made my mom feel so much more comfortable and It was the best seat in the house especially with this Alice in Wonderland treasure hunt going on seeing all the costumes and enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our server, Aaron let us know that there was going to be a longer wait for entrees but appetizers were much faster so we got the beef and vegetarian empanadas , two nacho plates. It took about 15 -20 minutes before we got out apps but the environment around us was super festive so that made time go by quickly. When our appetizers arrived . I immediately tried the Plantain Nachos. I was Gobsmacked as it actually made my heart swell with happiness like a homecoming party was in my mouth. These are NOT your typical Nachos . This touched me because it had been sometime since I tasted something that made me think of LOVE, and there I was sitting next to my mom feeding her samples because her wheel chair was in an awkward position and her hand was shaky. I was so happy because I was giving her a taste of something that she had given me all her life and it was beautiful. The empanadas were a treat as well but these nachos were on a whole different level. We finished the appetizers and then the entrees came out. I can speak for the CAYEYE MARINO and I must tell you how impressed I was with the care that was put into the appearance and the wonderful flavors . It was savory tangy and sweet all in one . I chopped up the fish for my mom to sample and gave her the strips of mango that were on top that were a great touch. Suddenly, It dawned on me after we received our dinners and started eating that we forgot to order for my mom. I was so mortified because once again mom was putting her kids first and because I got lost in the moment and caught myself being selfish but it turns out that the best was saved for last as when I went looking for Aaron it seems that The Co-Owner, Vivian actually offered to put the order in . I didn't ask for it in a hurry. She didn't even say who she was but reassured me that the order would be placed. Well it arrived much faster than I expected and personally delivered by Vivian who also kindly offered to take our picture. She also gave us a selfie by accident! I'm still not sure if this was actually the co-owner. You tell me! Whoever she was, I am so grateful! The food and the experience was spectacular . Mom loved her CAYEYE MARINO and for once was satisfied completely! Another wonderful thing, Even when my mom was returning from the restroom in her wheel chair a woman outside held the door very patiently so she could exit and return to our table. The experience was something I will never forget. It's clear that patrons value and treasure this place and it shows. My mom is still talking about her experience as the great escape party. My brother and my sister were over the moon about it as well. Its a place we will have to return to for obvious reasons.

It was so much, I barley finished it. The food is also good ! Good flavor and Friendly staff
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant has been on my list for a few years now and
This restaurant has been on my list for a few years now and so glad husband and I finally had dinner here a few weeks back! The food was amazing. It seems like they have made a few changes to the menu and have added some vegan/vegetarian options and it worked great for me. Their menu has so many GlutenFree options and I love them for that!!!!The service was amazing. Ana was our server and she was fantastic! We sat outside and were worried if we will be forgotten and will have spotty service, just as is the case at many restaurants. But Ana was super prompt and made sure to check on us, at the same time giving us sufficient space. She is the sweetest! The inside was more of a bar/casual vibe, but if the weather is good, I highly recommend sitting outside. Here is the rundown of the food we ordered-**Tostones on the house were very tasty and perfectly crunchy.**Vegan Empanadas - 5/5 they were really good, did not have cheese which made them light and the crust was so flaky and crispy in-spite of being gluten free. The sauce that is served with them is soooo good! **Carimanolas - Yuca balls stuffed with cheese - were 3/5 for me. Taste wise they were 5/5 but I could only take a few bites, they were too rich and heavy for my taste.**Black Bean Plantain Veggie Burger- was AMAZING. the taste was so different, something I had never eaten before. I forget the name, but I ordered it with an Arepa, which made it gluten free. 5/5**Bone in pork chop, mashed creole potatoes and sautéed veggies- 5/5. I dont eat meat but my husband thought the pork chop was very flavorful and well prepared. The creole potatoes were so flavorful and so were the sautéed veggies. **Beans- got a side of beans and they were packed with some great flavors. 5/5**Sweet plantain - got a side and it was again so good, cooked to perfection. **Merengón - the dessert was the least favorite part of my meal. It had a weird after taste and was not fresh at all. Very underwhelming in terms of taste and definitely overpriced. Also, they have a parking lot next door, so no worries about finding parking, although there seemed to be good amount of street parking in the area as well.Overall a great meal and I cannot wait to go here again!!!!
