Pasta Bar is a concept by renowned Michelin Star rated Scratch Bar. The restaurant seats 12 diners per service, at a visually stunning chef's table around a bustling open kitchen. The menu is not Italian or even necessarily pasta focused, though the scratch made pastas are the star of the show. The 12 course tasting menu ($225/person) can best be described as California cuisine. My husband and I dined here on Valentine's Day, where a special menu was served, featuring exclusive ingredients like winter truffles and caviar. Upon arrival, we were invited to sit in the cozy lounge area, and offered a special cocktail. I do not recall what was in it, but it was delicious. The staff took our photo with a Polaroid camera, which was later attached to our take home menu. A nice touch. Once seated inside at the chef's table, we were offered two different wine pairings, a standard for $175 per person, or vintage, for $225. We opted for the vintage, and while the pours were generous, none of the wines were particularly impressive. At this price point, we expected a splash of Dom or Krug at least, considering the occasion. But, all of the selections were $30-$40 bottles. All of the food was good, but only a few dishes stood out. My favorite overall was the Cavatelli with prawn, poblano, and caviar. The pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the ingredients were better than the sum of their parts. The Tagliolini with walnut and perigord truffle tasted like a really good Mac and Cheese, and the Agnolotti with sunchoke and shiso was a nutty, aromatic delight. Everything else was just okay. I wished the desserts were more interesting for the occasion. Service was genuinely charismatic and hospitable, but could have been more polished. We are open to trying the restaurant's other concepts in the future, but would not come back to Pasta Bar.
