Poogan's Porch Charleston Reviews from The Last Year
Horrible
I wish I could have given zero stars. Had a reservation at 8:30, white folks who had reservations at 8:45 (same party size as ours) got seated, we waited and waited for 30mins and then on asking what’s going on - an extremely rude and racist manager came out to show attitude. Pure racial profiling . I don’t care how good the food is but will never come here and would strongly not recommend to any people of color .
I've heard so many people rave about Poogan's Porch, but I
I've heard so many people rave about Poogan's Porch, but I was slightly disappointed by my experience. Next time I'll have to make a reservation outside to see if the ambiance hits differently, but the inside decor is average at best. When evaluating the food, it was really hit or miss for me. For instance, the complementary rolls they gave us were delicious. My cup of she-crab soup was really decadent and flavorful. However, the mussels were slightly below average - the broth was only just ok. Service was decent but they were clearly very slammed.
The service was good, but we did not enjoy the bland
The service was good, but we did not enjoy the bland "southern" food. Fried green tomatoes - bland but tasty with bacon jam She crab soup - just ok Sweet tea salmon - overcooked salmon, undercooked beans in succotash Fried chicken - chicken is bland without hot honey, collards had an odd taste, and the beans/peas were undercooked
Good food but not exceptional
Our food was really good and we'd go back but it's loud and crowded. We had to wait 15-20 min even with a reservation. Breakfast is kind of hard to do badly, especially in Charleston.
Great breakfast spot in Charleston, close to the waterfront
Great breakfast spot in Charleston, close to the waterfront and the famous pineapple fountain, try the fried green tomatoes and the grits are excellent!
Delish
Great service. Blue crab tip was comfort food. Shrimp and grits was a big portion. Need a reservation, at least on weekends.
Absolutely not.
Highly overpriced, food was just ok, very long wait for meal to be served.
Delicious fried chicken and shrimp and grits! Huge
Delicious fried chicken and shrimp and grits! Huge portions and nice wine list. Lovely old south atmosphere with a real front porch. Service by Zachary was right on target. He gave good suggestions, food arrived in a timely manner and he was just attentive enough without being a bother, perfect! I would definitely recommend a visit.
Oh Charleston, at this point you can do no wrong.
Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Charleston has some of the best food the states have to offer. But you are never fully prepared for amazing food, are you? Poogans Porch is southern comfort food set in a historic home. Charleston seems to have an abundance of these types of restaurants, but this might be the best of the bunch. Sure there's full menu of items to choose from, but the fried chicken is the only thing that matters. It's that good The fried chicken: a huge 4 piece portion! Poogans doesn't even mess with the dry breasts(sorry breast lovers), only all juicy thighs here. The chicken is well seasoned but the breading is everything. A crispy light batter that is unbelievably addictive. I've had too many fried chicken in my life to count, no food brings me more pleasure. Poogans version is easily top 3! Poogans Porchs reputation precedes it. And with good reason. The chicken alone is worst the visit
Disappointing
Opted to drop in for a quick meal and having been to Charleston numerous times, we just never made it to this long standing, landmark restaurant. We were greeted warmly and showed to a table promptly. The venue itself is rustic but we were comfortable. Our server was very friendly and she offered up her suggestions and recommendations. We tried two appetizers, Fried Green Tomatoes, She Crab Dip and one entree, Shrimp and Grits. The dishes just didn’t hit the mark for us as we found all lacked flavor. The apps were just okay with the dip having a very chewy cheddar cheese on top. While the shrimp were cooked well in the Shrimp and Grits, the gravy was lacking in flavor and as shrimp and grits enthusiasts, simply disappointing. Perhaps our late arrival (9pm) was the reason but given the dining options available in Charleston, we are unlikely to give it another try.
It was OK, just had eggs and sausages with biscuits.
Biscuits weren't any big deal. Cute place though! My sister had an open-faced omelet, she didn't think much of it either.

While me and my family were visiting Charleston, we were looking for authentic Southern food. We didn't have reservations and we had to wait 30 minutes for a weekday dinner. The wait was worth it. I ordered the shrimp and grits which was flavored just right. Price is also fair while the ambiance recapitulate a remodeled 18th century house. Service was also quick. We had our toddler and they even provided 2 crayons and a paper for entertainment. I recommend this place to anybody who is visiting. There is ample street parking too.
Fabulous dinner
Fabulous service, atmosphere and food! In town for a conference and had a delightful dinner at Poogan’s. Appetizers were delicious. Cheese fritters were a table favorite! The Pecan Old Fashioned was perfection. Mahi dinner seemed to be the best entree of the table but everyone enjoyed their meals. We tried all desserts but the chocolate cake. Pecan pie was the favorite. Please do yourself a favor and indulge in the biscuits. They’re a must! I could live on n them! Our server Conner was friendly, attentive and fun!
Monday evening, no available seating for @ 1 hour.
But, boy oh boy was it worth it! The service was excellent. The food was absolutely amazing. We had the crab dip, the house salad, and the lamb shank. Amazing!
Food was amazing.
Services are huge. Everything was absolutely delicious. Served out quick and hot. Carlos, our server was phenomenal. He was professional personable and on top of everything. Then there was Justin running around all over the place filling Waters taken care of silverware picking up dishes that Justin was running all over this restaurant. Ambience is comfortable, however, noisy. The banana pudding is to die for better than any we've had anywhere and we are from the south.

Great Food and Southern Hospitality
Wonderful service and amazing food. I highly recommend making a reservation for the balcony. The setting was perfect and we got to watch people and carriages go by as we ate.
Nice Charleston Vibe
Friendly staff and cute location. Enjoyed the sunny dining area and large booths. Went for an early dinner and no problem with reservation time. Unfortunately food did not live up to reviews. The shrimp and grits was fine, not the best in Charleston for sure, but the sweet tea salmon was super salty. The best part was the sweet potato puree. The favorite dishes were the chicken fried pork and wonderful mashed potatoes.
Southern Comfort Food
Located in a quaint house on a beautiful street! Delicious authentic southern cooking. Shrimp and grits. Fried chicken. Hoppin’ John. Good value. Friendly staff. Definitely ecommend!
Yum!
Fried chicken sandwich on the upper porch! This little gem is an experience. From the old house to the southern service. My wife and I split the sandwich and it was plenty, along with an Eye opener and Pecan Old Fashioned (a very unique twist on an old favorite). Everything we had was fantastic, fresh and tasty! Highly recommended!
We were a little concerned about this place as I have heard
We were a little concerned about this place as I have heard locals don't eat here and it's a tourist place, well, tourist or not, the food was great. I loved this building, you walk up the porch steps into a long hall and from the hostess stand you walk through the bar and we were seated by the front window, which was wonderful for me. Our server was delightful and attentive and made the experience feel like family. I opted for a cup of she crab soup which was one of the better in Charleston. Creamy with that decadent sherry flavor and mound of crab meat on top. She crab soup and Charleston go hand in hand and the flavor is like no other crab soup. I can only try to describe it as something like a lobster bisque with crab meat but not the soupy lobster bisque that is fishy, but the creaminess that is such a balance between too thick and too thin. It has to be just right. I am a harsh critic when it comes to fried chicken. Like many I imagine, there Momma's sets the standard and for me, that is a high bar indeed. Other than a tad too much salt in the batter, this was a delight to eat. Each piece was crispy at every bite and that well season taste with chicken that it not over cooked is a special thing. Frying chicken is not for the faint of heart. I ate the entire plate. It came with some sriracha honey sauce which stayed right where it belonged, on the side. This fried chicken's chicken needed no sauce for flavor. Let's talk about the sides which deserve their 15 minutes. I have said in other reviews, that I like sweet and salty collard greens but my wife and her family did not have any sugar in there greens (bless their hearts), so they like them Unsweet. Well, these were good collards but way more in her tastes than mine. I gave her half of them. Now, the Hoppin' John is a Southern dish that often gets a bad name as a bland dish. Seasoning is everything, especially with a dish like this. Basically it is white rice with cowpeas. Now, I have seen it made with black eyes and others as well. If you cook your peas properly with some pork fat and seasoning and don't forget to add some salt when cooking your rice, nothing should be bland. This was done right! If I were to add anything, I would offer some of the pot liquor in a side cup to put over the rice. However, I am glad they drain their sides before putting them on a plate of fried chicken. Liquid does not go well with crispy chicken. That's a no no. I did share a Mahon jar of banana pudding and it was good, but the way they layered it wasn't more deconstructed and not necessarily a winner to me. Great taste, just too complicated. Don't worry about whether or not locals go here (they probably do but don't tell anyone), the food, service and setting are all well worth a visit.

We love you Poogans Porch! We visited Charleston for the first time last week and are so happy that we made a stop at Poogans Porch before we left. They seated us outside on their adorable patio where we were able to people watch and enjoy the horse drawn carriages stroll by. Our server was adorable and I don't remember her name, but I think she said she was from Minnesota. Anyway, she was so friendly. Our food arrived quickly and my son ordered a smash burger, I ordered a Caesar salad with fried chicken and my husband ordered their fried chicken plate. he had been waiting all week to have true Southern fried chicken, and that meal did not disappoint. Everything was so delicious. I wanted to get a mug to bring home with me and I forgot. By the time we remembered they were already closed. Well, I guess we'll have to return again. Thank you Poogans Porch for a great lunch.
We sat on the second floor porch for our dinner reservation
We sat on the second floor porch for our dinner reservation at 8pm. (The stairs to the place were very steep for anyone with accessibility issues). Our server was kind and attentive to us. We had a couple of cocktails and ordered the fried pimento balls and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. Both were amazing. Then we had biscuits with whipped butter. I ordered the Cesar salad with fried chicken and the Mac and cheese appetizer as a side. The Mac and cheese was good but a little salty for my taste though the rest of my party loved it. The chicken salad was great. The lettuce was so crisp and the dressing tasted fresh! Would love to come back and try the rest of the menu!

This was where we had brunch on our first day and were glad we did. Our server Brandon was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful. The cocktails were delicious and the fried pork chop was utterly unbelievable. I've never tasted pork this delicious and it actually tasted like it was seasoned as well as the crust. Unreal. It's a wonderful way to start your day, and many people were doing exactly that.
Absolutely loved this place! Such a quaint little brunch
Absolutely loved this place! Such a quaint little brunch spot with a great menu! I got the iced coffee with brandy and kahlua, a delicious start to our boozy brunch. The biscuits they brought out first were insane. Warm, soft and the perfect vessel for their out of this world butter. Wish I could take some of that butter home lol Ordered the egg white omelette and I loved it! Veggies were delicious and home fries were perfectly crispy. Our server was very busy but she still made sure she gave us great service. Definitely check out this place for brunch if you're in the area!
The customer service was amazing.
Barely had to wait to get seated and the waiter was so kind and chatty. Our food came out very quickly and rhetorical food was amazing. We got the cheese fritters and they were SUPER! The cheese pull was grrreeeaatt and the cheese was so gooey and tasty it. The burgers and fries I got came out fresh and hot with a side of ketchup. Although there were only cheese and meat in my burger, it still worked to make a great combo and satisfy my taste buds. Thank you for this amazing experience. Please come here whenever you get the chance
Yucky.
That's my word for the whole experience, from condescending wait staff to a salad full of brown sand to being charged for the coffee that accompanied an inedible meal I sent back three times (!), the whole meal-less experience was just terrible. My sense is the staff is miserable and they are slammed with too many diners to serve with any degree of attention. And if they're not washing the produce, I can't imagine what the kitchen is like. Lots of great restaurants in Charleston--I wouldn't bother with this one.
Reservations at 7:30 pm, food came in at 9 pm.
Ordered cocktails, out of Campari, cancelled cocktails. Ordered wine, brought wrong year bottle without pointing out. Cancelled wine and changed wine. 3 out of 4 dishes came out cold. Food uninspiring! Arrogant Attitude by staff. With so many choices in Charleston, suggest you avoid this restaurant.
Ambiance was warm and welcoming.
Food ( brunch) was delicious. Service was excellent

Walked past this place a few times on my solo trip to Charleston. Decided to have breakfast on my last morning. Arrived when they opened at 9am and hostess wanted to seat me at the bar since I didn't have a reservation. Eventually was allowed to sit at a table. My waiter was very nice and personable. Food was not good. Fried green tomatoes lacked flavor. The chicken in the chicken and waffles was dry and inedible. Very disappointing breakfast. Place seems like a tourist trap and I wish I hadn't fallen for it.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
