I had a prior appointment nearby and was happy to see the Raku was nearby. I've only tried the east village location to compare but for the most part they seem to be on par with quality. (I do prefer the East Village one however) I came around 1pm on a Thursday and had no wait for my solo lunch date. The service was quick and prompt with suggestions and taking my order. I originally wanted the chawanmishu but was told it takes 20 min to make so I ultimately went with the servers suggestion of the agedashi tofu. The tofu pieces were so silky and had a good bite to it, and there was enough bonito flakes to complement the tofu! I also got the ebitan udon for the tempura. The udon noodles were fresh and had a good chew to it and the broth had a lot of depth, though I did feel like adding a lot of spicy flakes to it. The tempura was not too oily and lightly crisped! To end it all, they gave out frozen grapes with the checks which were soo good after the meal!

The food and ambiance here was delicious and cozy and perfect for a cold day. I had the spicy raku udon. The noodles were the perfect amount of chewy and the length was perfect. The short ribs were so good. And the broth was so good I want more already. The staff were so quick and made the experience so seamless. I've heard such great things and it definitely delivered!
Be the first to ReplyWorth the wait and lives up to the anticipation.
The fact that they have a larger assortment than most ramen or udon restaurants really appealed to me. Great beginnings that improved the overall experience. Our main courses were the yaki stir fry for me and the tantan udon for my wife. It was sufficient to sate our hunger for a late dinner and a light lunch the following day. In this Soho neighborhood, there are a lot of excellent restaurants to choose from, so this one should be at the top of your list, particularly if you're craving noodles but not Italian.
Be the first to ReplyWe made reservations through Resy for Saturday night dinner.
They have a 10 minute grace period if you are running late. And you are notified via text when your table is ready. We sat at a nice booth in the back of the restaurant that comfortably seated 4. Restrooms are downstairs and well maintained. Points awarded for clean restrooms, as it means they take pride in all areas of the restaurant. For apps we ordered their Chicken Tatsuta-age, and Chawanmushi. The Tatsuta-age comes in either 6 or 10 pieces. We opted for 10 and were pleasantly surprised by how juicy the chicken was. We were forewarned that the chawanmushi would take about 35 minutes to prepare. It was worth the wait, and I do not usually think any food is worth a lengthy wait. For udon - we ordered the Gyunan, Nishin, Kamonan, and Curry. All were delicious in their own ways. They come out from the kitchen nice and hot. The noodles are handmade and plentiful in each bowl. Will be back and do recommend. A must try for anyone in NY.
Be the first to ReplyWe stopped by for lunch after a visit to the color factory
We stopped by for lunch after a visit to the color factory and had a wait of about 45 minutes for 2 people at around 1 pm on a Saturday afternoon (not bad!). Note that they are strict about outside food or beverage, so we had to toss the Starbucks that we picked up while waiting for our table. Most of the tables are communal so we were wedged between two groups of people, one of which was talking about how this is the best udon in the city. Given that this is the first udon that I've had in the city I cannot definitively make that declaration, however it was good enough that I probably won't try it anywhere else. I had the nabeyeki which was a huge portion that gave me the chance to try a few different things - chicken, sea eel, fish cake, shiitake mushroom, sansai, egg - with shrimp tempura on the side. HIghly recommend this option! Flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles... drooling thinking about it!
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best udon I've had in my life.
The texture of the noodle was so chewy and soft. Almost like mochi. The broth really hit the spot. The chicken was so crunchy and paired well with the sauce they served. Almost like spicy mayo with hit of vinegar.
Be the first to ReplyThis Japanese food was fantastic and it taste really great.
The Udon noodless taste really delicious and broth was rich in flavor. It has good amount of noodles. The texture was great too. The Chicken was really tasty and has good crunch. The place has homey vibe and it feels like dining in Japan. The sushi was so delicious and fresh. The server was nice very friendly. Good prices of food.

I asked for whatever the most popular thing is under $25 and they gave me the best udon I've had in my life. Honestly so good.

Best Udon I've had in NYC! The noodles itself are perfectly chewy and slightly firm, without getting soggy in the broth for the whole duration of the meal (like udon noodles often do). I had Curry Udon, and the broth was a great balance between dashi broth and curry and went so well together with the beef and spinach toppings. The portion is big and they also have a wide range of toppings you can add. I've been to Tsurutontan (another popular udon spot in NYC) a few times and for me Raku is the clear winner! No reservation, but there are so many fun bars in the area that you can pop into for a drink while you wait.
Be the first to Replystellar udon but i'd say a litttooo overhyped.
we got in line right before opening and only had to wait a bit. karaage was SO fire and juicy and crispy! i got a simple udon and could really taste the freshness of the noodles, they were so crispy and qq. tempura was beautiful but just aight.
Be the first to ReplyThe best udon I ever had! Broth very tasty.
Had the chiraku noodles. It really was the best- great hangover food!
Be the first to ReplyRaku will and always be ~that girl~.
I've probably been 6 times since moving! I don't recommend their cold udon, but maybe I had a bad batch? My favorites are the tofu and the mushroom udon!

Love the jaja cold udon and karage!Tried sansai udon this time and was pretty great. Got the maitake tempura on the side and will do that again to keep it crispy. Abt 45 min wait on Wed night

They made our part of 3 wait the usual 30 min and let someone who reserved after us take our table. They continued to make our party wait inside even though our text said our table was ready. The man who took our seat cut in front of us and the table was very clearly meant for our party. They kept saying our table was "ready" so then why send a text that it's ready? It was not ready. No one tried to alleviate the mix up and they just tried to cover it up.

We had a 5 pm reservation for Raku where they seated us outside in the heated covered seating. However, the space was right and although it was warm, it wasn't warm enough to take off my coat. Me and one of my friends got the ebiten udon while the other two of us which higher spice tolerances got the curry udon. The ebiten udon comes with three pieces of tempura and you can tell that the udon noodles are handmade. Overall, it was a pretty solid meal, although our waiter was hurrying us near the end (understandable due to the number of people waiting).
Be the first to Replygot lucky and came at 6:30 p.
m. on a Saturday and got seated within 15 minutes we ordered the edamame, cucumber salad, and Gyoza as an appetizer which were great probably a little too much food for two people also ordering udon I got the tantan udon which was really good a little rich kind of reminded me of tonkatsu Ramen but still delicious and had the perfect seven minute egg in it. My friend also got the Maitake mushrooms to add into her udon and they were marinated perfectly (like as if they were literally grown in sauce) they were so delicious ... genuinely I'm still going to think about them. I really like Ramen but for some reason this experience was just better?? often times I feel like it Ramen shops you don't get as much soup and it's a faster meal but Raku gave you this big bowl of noodles and broth that was so flavorful. Overall huge portions of the udon --this place is so good if you're craving Ramen but you're in Soho go here (even though it's udon)
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite udon place in NYC and possibly of all time!
My favorite udon place in NYC and possibly of all time! They serve wonderfully hot and perfectly al dente udon in a wide variety of broths and toppings. We got the gyunan (beef slices) udon and the vegetarian egg and spinach (ankake) udon. Both were SO hot coming out and hit the spot on a freezing March night. The egg udon was thicker to begin with but got to a regular soupy texture once you start eating. Both noodles were so flavorful and tasty. The gyoza wasn't very good compared to the udon. We only ate 2 pieces - it could really use more time on the fryer to get the right level of crispyness and the toppings were a bit too bland. A definite pass but understandable for place that focuses on udon

Yummy! Went with my mom- who is very picky and she loved it. Homemade noodles- fresh and quality ingredients you can taste. Great customer service.
Be the first to ReplyI had the beef ramen and it was delicious.
So was the kinpira gobo and chicken. Service was great. We will definitely be back!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent vegetarian yaki.
Service was great and the noodles tasted very fresh. Food came out very quickly.
Be the first to ReplyRaku is my all-time favorite udon place in NYC for as long
Raku is my all-time favorite udon place in NYC for as long as I live! The ambiance is so cozy. I was first introduced to Raku by my bf. We had the mackerel pressed sushi (which is amazing and a must get!), the karage and udon. The udon comes out piping hot which we both love as we love our food (especially broth) hot. I've had the nabeyaki, tan tan and niku udon and I love them all. Service is amazing! The waiters are very attentive. Raku does get very busy so do come early or even reserve prior to coming. If you're lucky, you might get seated quickly. Looking forward to the next time I'm back at Raku!

We asked for a seat indoors and waited 40 mins and after we wait, the host goes "we cant sit you indoors"Like WtfThe host said if we sat outdoors we could be seated right away but we didn't wanna sit outside so we said we'd wait and he said it'd be a 30 minute wait. Then he comes to us being like 10 more minutes. THEN comes to us being like so I can only seat you guys outside. Bro then why did we wait 40 minutes, he never said he didnt gaurantee a seat indoors even if we waited. His attitude was just rude from the start. We're so annoyed that we're never coming here again. So rude.

I've been a regular for 4 years and because of the host being so rude and dumb, I'm never coming back.He said our table will be ready in 30 mins for a seat indoors. and afterwards, comes to us being like you guys are being seated soon. Then comes to us again being like unfortunately we cant sit you indoors.Dude, why'd be wait this whole time when we could've sat outdoors from the start. (He said we could be seated right away if seated outside)

This is hands down my favorite place for udon! I highly recommend the Niku Udon. The broth was super comforting and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly chewy. I felt like I could drink the broth just by itself :D As for seating, I was seated outside in the covered area but it was fairly comfortable with heaters during the winter. I will definitely be going back to Raku every time I visit NYC and it's the first restaurant I recommend to friends as well!

We came by on the a Saturday afternoon at 1, and there was a one hr wait! They were pretty accurate with the estimate and we were seated around 2pm. The restaurant is fairly cozy with a few tables in the front and back and a bar in the center. I tried the shrimp tempura udon, and the noodles were fantastic. Great texture and a nice chew. Broth was also flavorful. Can't wait to come back and try some more dishes!
