ROKA Mayfair London Reviews
Avoid at all costs - extremely rude and unwelcoming front of house staff
I decided to visit ROKA Mayfair for lunch on Monday 22nd July, I arrive at around 1:30pm and saw that there were plenty of tables available outside in the terrace at the front of the restaurant and thought it would be nice to enjoy lunch outside considering the sun was out. I was met by an extremely rude front of house team member who said her name was Daniela, I asked for a table for two outside, the terrace was pretty much empty with plenty of tables available however there were no tables with two seats and Daniela aggressively said that we could not sit at any of the available empty tables (which there were at least six of) on the terrace as they had more than two seats around them. Daniela proceeded to be extremely rude announcing that she has worked at the restaurant for two years and had not seen us before. She was laughing to the other hostess taking pleasure in saying that she would not seat us. I was extremely surprised by her demeanour and having enjoyed visiting ROKA Charlotte Street and ROKA Aldwych a number of times was very shocked to have had such an awful experience when visiting ROKA Mayfair. It was noticeable that the ROKA Mayfair was unusually empty and perhaps the chain is going downhill, after this experience I will definitely be avoiding ROKA at all costs and would definitely suggest they conduct a review into the way their team members are treating guests.

Sad ๐ Not satisfied. Disappointed.
We were here a few times before. Huge difference โน๏ธ. The prices triple since 6 month ago. And this is not a big issue. The portions are so much smaller. The food nothing special at all. If was so much better selection before. Not anymore. They are trying to impress with food presentation. All they have as of now is location. Presentation is ok. Location is good ๐. Service most of the Turkey is pleasant Never coming back here for sure. You donโt get what you paying for $$$$.
AGAIN PERFECT
Roka is wonderful place. The food quality and its presentation are on the highest level. Service kind and experienced. Wine list extended. Sommelier (lady from Serbia) made good recommendation for us. We will come back.
Terrible service with average food
Went to lunch and the service was terrible: unfriendly, inattentive staff and mediocre food. Such a shame for a restaurant in an easy reach of Selfridges. Highly donโt recommend this tourist trap. Go elsewhere.
Finished
Really good service, very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food doesnโt match the service offering an average sushi. Atmosphere also downgraded. It is a shame because it used to be a really great sushi restaurant.
Great food, but too loud. Very, very noisy.
I've been a regular visitor to Roka in Canary Wharf because it's close to my office and meet regularly colleagues and clients for dinner there. One aspect I keep mentioning about Roka in Canary Wharf is the excessive noise level. Challenging to have a conversation without shouting......this time visited Roka in Mayfair for dinner with friends and for my shocking surprise the noise level was even higher than in their Canary Wharf restaurant. Almost unbearable. We were 4 in a round-table and we struggled to maintain a conversation without shouting. Really bad. In fact we would have stayed for an extra/after-dinner drink but decided to go to another place where we could talk. Food is great, service not fantastic, but good enough, so from a dining experience it was really good and we enjoyed the dishes. But they definitely need to do something with the noise level.
I think they read minds ! Ashtray outside in under 10 seconds . Water in under 10 secs . Service 10/10 food divine
A must in london if you want the Mayfair vide and lunch high without the drugs . Super versatile menu . Every bite was excellent . Including desserts !
Last time Iโm going to Roka
I have been going there since they opened a long time ago but that was my last time. Arrived without a booking and asked the host a young blonde lady if we could sit at one of the tables in the dining room if they were free. 5 of the 4 person table were not occupied. She said yes of course, then after giving coats she takes us to the counter bar in between people. I told her that I asked for specific table and she said only bar and high chairs. As I saw she was poor at her job and not very bright I just sat at the bar. The 4-5 round tables remained unoccupied during our whole meal. Food was ok but the experience was very poor. I will not be going back! The host gives you the first impression of a restaurant and needs to be competent. They clearly failed to do that.
Pricey yet great value
Dependant on dishes chosen it can be expensive , however very good value for money. We chose a number dishes for our group and the server was great in suggesting we may have over ordered! Delivery if the dishes was nicely staggered so we did not feel rushed or to much food in one go. Enjoyed the evening
Genuinely love this place
Roka is a fantastic restaurant and still retains that funky, edgy vibe to remind you that you're out having fun. The food is like the atmosphere, cheeky London versions of the original with a touch of magic. The menu has legitimate wow factor items that crams the restaurant full most nights, there's a reason why.... and thats that it's bloody good! Never been let down by Roka and always happy to come back. Not sure who left the last few reviews, seems like people with impossibly hard to please tastes and forgot how to relax.
Great Venue for a Special Occasion
My wife has the misfortune to have a birthday on 2nd January, overshadowed by Xmas and New Year. Many places are not even open this week. For the second year running we went to Roka Mayfair, taking three daughters and their partners. We shared 4 x seasonal tasting menus and 4 x premium tasting menus, which meant that between us we got to try almost all the best dishes they offer. Food and service were exemplary, and the evening was a great success. Roka is not cheap, but it's a case of "you get what you pay for."
Great food but awful experience
If it was doen to food and service this would be a 5-star review. The food was prepared and presented really well and I think we must have had the same waiter mentioned below (from Kyrgyzstan) as the service was exceptionally good. However, the experience was ruined by havoing a table near a fire exit. This was in constant use by diners to pop outside for a cigarette and by staff to wait on the terrace. This meant we got a regular blast of cold air and the stench of smoke from outside Was the experience poor? Yes - very poor for the prices charged. Would I go back again? Yes, as long as we did not have one of the tables near the fire exit
The dining room was modern and the open kitchen was
The dining room was modern and the open kitchen was cool--you could see the cooks preparing the dishes from your table. We were seated at a table that wraps around the kitchen with a group of others. Although it was cool to see the cooks doing their thing, it's not the most intimate setting. For this experience, we ordered the 11 course premium tasting menu. It was not a bad price overall. The service was alright, we heard from our server whenever the courses came out and the pacing of the courses were rather abysmal. The food wasn't anything super special in my opinion but it wasn't bad for the price. There were no memorable flavors to me and I was lacking some unique courses. When I do tasting menus like this, I love to have some courses that I hadn't thought of ordering anywhere else. In addition, the menu was very fish heavy. I like fish, but would've loved more meat options too.
Perfect...!
Nice experience ... we had the menu with different plates ... it was so much foods that we could not finish ! The service was perfect and the waiter so polite and helpful. The food fresh, warm so artistically well presented... everything was perfect even the atmosphere .. you can also see people cooking in front of you. We paid around 140 per person including drinks ... I recommend
Disaster
Interior design is amazing, food quality is great. Butโฆ. If not a waiter from Kyrgyzstan, so sorry cannot remember his name; our evening would be ruined completely. First of all we were a group of 6, when leaving our coats nobody asked us if it was ok - they started putting all our coats on top of each other. Thats ok, butโฆ they should ask. Then we were offered to get to the bar counter before our table was ready, which is also fine, but 2 of us decided to have a cigarette on the terrace and we were told would be ok as there were some heaters etc. Asked another host for the ash-tray and was told that we โactually should not be smoking there at allโ and โthey have no ash trays at all, as we should go out in a street to have a cigaretteโฆโ shocking! Checked with another host lady and she got us an ash-tray in a second. At the table, ordered food and drinks - all good, but when asked our food waiter to help with some extra drinks the response was โno, I am just a food waiter, you have to ask wine waiter, when she comes backโฆโ no marinated ginger was on any of the plates, when asked were ignoredโฆ. And then a young waiter originally from Kyrgyzstan arrives and takes a leading role serving us. We got everything we needed and were adequately served since then. Still I was extremely disappointed that I failed to impress our quests. I hope you will come back to me to discuss this matter further.
Good but Expensive
Food was amazing, service was unbelievably quick and waiter gave some great recommendations. That being said, was very expensive and they charged us for the table water and constantly trying to get us to order more drinks. Would defo recommend just be careful of the bill catching up on you.
The restaurant itself is I'm extremely beautiful.
Bathrooms are immaculate and the vibe screamed chique. The service was alright. The hostesses were very inviting and pleasant but once our server realized we were in a bit of a hurry and just wanted a snack, you could visibly see she couldn't be bothered. We ordered a number of appetizers (2 beef dumpling orders, a fried crispy squid roll and a order of eel nigiri) food came out very fast and was delicious (albeit small). After all of that and a couple bottles of water we had spent ยฃ84. Probably would not go back.
Roka Rocks
Tonight I decided to come to my favorite restaurant in town. Reservation was only possible thanks to Daniella. The food was amazing, as always. The ambiance was lively. But the experience was made possible due the attention of Arleta. She is the Queen of the room. Her hawk eye always finds a customer with a need. ๐๐ป Iโll be back. You can count on it!
Shambles
The service is a shambles. Wrong food delivered, staff that canโt order drinks, and a very long wait for a dish from the grill which was undercooked when it finally arrived. Only saving grace was that the broccoli was nice.
Best Japanese in UK
The best Japanese fusion in the entire UK. My fav is the Mayfair branch. High quality food, well resourced and very tasty. Will always go there
Shocking
I paid for my son and 4 friends to go to Roka Mayfair on my amazing experiences I have had at their restaurants. 3 of them had the premium tasting menu on my recommendation.. and to hold out for the wagyu beef because itโs the best thing I have ever tasted .. They were severely disappointed.. that grade of Wagyu at that price is served pretty rare .. melts like butter on the palate .. This one was over cooked / slightly burnt and chewy โฆ! To say im gutted I suggested they went there and had the most expensive tasting menu is beyond disappointed is an understatement.. I donโt think I will ever go or take my business colleagues again. Plus there is nobody to speak to at the end of the phone ..! Go to Zuma is what i would now suggest !!!!
Awful food
Would not recommend, bring on stickNsushi anyday. The food was awful, tasteless, the veggie tempura was bland and tasteless and greasy. The edamame was covered in large rock salt, the tables are so close together. Defintelly it is all a hype!!
Good food. Poor service.
The food is great in Roka. The wagu beef and black cod are amazing but the service is awful. Waited 30 minutes for a table we had booked. Waited 20 minutes for cutlery and asked four staff. This letโs the place down. Too busy and staff struggling. Ruins the whole experience.
Did not meet expectations
We were greeted at the door by a very unwelcoming front of house lady which immediately set the tone for our evening. Tables are very close together. Floor staff were helpful yet rather aloof and unfriendly and you certainly get the feel that they are eager to turn around tables. Food was very nice, however definitely prefer the experience at Nobu.
arrogant head chef and Padron peppers can ruin a whole evening or vegetarians not welcome ?
How arrogant head chef refuse to accommodate our vegetarian friend with Padron peppers that where on the menu with a meet dish can , we ask our lovely server for few peppers and he said no we asked the restaurant manager hand he said the Head chef refuse to hand over few Padron peppers (for extra payment of course ) What an attitude???? our party of 6 will never go back to Roka Mayfair as with head chef like that in place
Average food and service, despite selected dishes that were good
Have eaten at multiple Roka restaurants over the years in the UK and overseas. Todayโs experience and food was mediocre. Of course my rating wonโt impact their average and it probably wonโt improve because of this - but I need to give feedback anyway given that delivery fell short of expectations. - we sat at the counter which is fine, yet them piling us lemons / limes at the corners for Liz leaving empty plates around for too long attracts insects/fruit flies. Not appetising for my young daughter to keep waving off the insects off her food - food was a mixed bag. The spare ribs were done nicely. The chicken skewers were over cooked and dry - we saw them grilling on for quite a while from where we sat. The sushi was good average. Miso soup was way too intensely seasoned / mixed. The iceberg salad and found to be creative and well made resented. - service was mixed to poor. There is no dedicated waiter. So we dealt with someone who took the order and three other people who brought or took food. Hence follow ups were not always consistent and timing of the food too spaced out given multiple dishes. When I flagged the insects and slow arrival of dishes I got a weak apology and shrug. Everyone seemed stressed out, maybe under staffed. In any case, I was not impressed. Have tried most upper end Japanese restaurants in central London - from authentic Japanese Izakaya to foreign owned places like Roka. Have also lived in Tokyo and travelled in many parts of Japan - so I can calibrate both the food and price point. Given the 150GBP spend for a simple dinner for two with no alcohol today - I was underwhelmed. You enter and leave the place without feeling welcomed or appreciated as a guest, which is a no go for a Japanese-themed restaurant. Too many good alternatives in London - no need to return to Roka Mayfair.
General Manager threatened to call the police on me and my friends
We got there on time but our table was delayed. When we sat down and looked at the menu we ordered a bottle of wine. The waitress said okay, we eventually ordered another 2 bottles. side note the bottle was served by a different person. When we got the bill we noticed that the price of the wine was way more expensive that what we saw on the menu, so we disputed it with the General Manager, Pedro explaining that it was not our mistake but the waitress who took our order, he was very rude and hostile. He made us feel so small. We were happy to pay for what we believed the price was and as a gesture of goodwill I expected him to understand and grant our request. Instead he threatened to call the police if we did not pay and completely embarrassed us in front of the whole restaurant, as 3 black women this was very disheartening to see, I will not give my money to such a place again!
Overbooked and understaffed
Food was great, but the place is overbooked and staff too busy to pay attention to their guests. We ordered around 10 dishes, 3 of which never arrived. We didnโt pay attention to the missing food, as the table was full of food. Upon paying the bill, we realised they have charged us for the 2 dishes they forgot to serve us. Luckily, they could see in their system that we did indeed not receive the full order. They then apologised. Itโs such as shame that they overbook and understaff this beautiful restaurant.
Tasty and relaxed
The food here is good; fresh and good quality. The service is friendly and you don't feel time pressured like you do at other London restaurants. Just expensive for small portions.
The place that put a visit to Tokyo on the map for me.
Sushi was exquisite with an atmosphere to match. Will definitely be going back!
