The service is great here! The sake sommelier is very knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful! The bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and everything they offered. The food is ok. Brussels sprouts were delicious, the new Mazemen they offered lacked flavor. I understand it was vegetarian but I added the onsen egg hoping it would ass some umami but there was nothing. If you get it definitely add the soy sauce that comes in the little dropper. None of the yakitori stood out. Everything was just ok. Food is 3 stars but the service and staff give it the 4 stars!
Be the first to ReplyGot a reservation here for an early dinner on a Saturday.
The only thing I knew about this spot is that it's popular and that they serve giant katsu. Well take a look at my pictures - that katsu is fucking huge! Could not have been happier with it from both a size and taste standpoint. It had a perfectly crunchy fry on the outside while still being juicy enough on the inside.. The whole experience was lovely from beginning to end. We were seated in a nice cool area in the back from which we could see the counters and rest of the restaurant. Then when we ordered sake we got to select our own glasses, which felt really fancy and personalized. Then the food, again, was delicious. The mazeman and noodles were great too, not just the katsu. Service was also attentive throughout and quick. Overall high recommendation from me but you've probably already heard of this place from others, so just go check it out already.

A spacious high ceiling restaurant in Greenpoint that also acts as an event space. When we came, there was a comedy show happening later in the evening. We didn't even realize that we sat next to the comedian and his wife for the entirety of the dinner until after. The service was good. The drink and food menu were extensive and unique. We were recommended to get a few skewers. We had the pork jowl which we would get again. The lamb tongue was not our favorite as we couldn't get over the presentation and the texture. It was legit a huge piece of an actual lambs tongue and cut into pieces on a stick. It definitely was obviously a large lamb tongue. I was expecting it to be crunchier/chewier but it was verrrry soft. The tuna sashimi was standard. The mazemen and the Brussels sprouts, and the main wagyu dish stole the show. I would definitely make my way back and will try to make a night of it with an after dinner show as well!
Be the first to Replysoso beautiful from ambiance to presentation of food.
we got a lot -- karaage, gem salad, salmon, mackerel, and some beef stews. i'd def prefer the fish over the meats, as they came with lovely accompaniments and were well seasoned. get the dessert (black sesame) for sure!! wish I could come here for brunch to try the souffle pancake.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Saturday without making a reservation.
Didn't have to wait long to be seated and the servers was attentive. One of the apparent standouts is the massive fluffy soufflé with maple syrup and additional sesame ice cream. Also, ordered the gyu don so I can have the best of both worlds- savory and sweet. Highly recommend, and def need to go back to try the dinner me
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful restaurant with a nice atmosphere.
The food and drinks are overpriced and were very mediocre. Service was ok, the server didn't seem too engaged in our party. Could have done without the last second "complimentary yuzu sake shot" right before paying. Felt the intention was for tip reasons rather than it just being a nice gesture. Overall after hearing so many good things, we left disappointed and unsatisfied. We spent over $100 and still left hungry. Not sure we'd be returning.
Be the first to ReplyI had a hojicha latte which wasn't too sweet.
I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast set which came with salmon and veggies, miso soup, veggies with broth, and rice. I like the Japanese soufflé pancake and we got white chocolate soft serve. The pancake was light and airy. We came at 11am without a reservation and were seated at a communal table. Overall, the food was solid.

TLDR: You have to order the pancakes! The Japanese Souffle Pancakes here are the most unique and best pancakes I have had in NYC. The texture and creaminess inside is unmatched. Served with a sesame butter and maple syrup, the flavors blend together so well. The Katsu sandwich had the juiciest chicken and if you like it a little spicier, ask for a hot paste on the side.

Finally had a chance to try Rule of Thirds! I managed to get a resy for 3pm on a Sunday, they actually close at 3pm but it didn't affect the reservation at all. They did say they were running low on the fish sandos though so it's probably safer to get an earlier resy if possible! Overall I'm pretty happy with the experience but it was a little overhyped. The soufflé pancake is good but it's definitely not mind blowing. I actually really enjoyed the fish sando but I did end up taking one of the fish fillets out because it was so hard to take a bite. The ambiance of the inside is great and I would love to come back for dinner one day!

Highly reccomend when you're in the mood to try something different and not picky. All dishes were flavorful & sake is a must try. Service was very helpful and positive at all times!

3.5 -The decor and ambiance is beautiful. Service was great. But the food for dinner was a bit underwhelming. Ordered tonkatsu, nothing memorable. Karaage this was good and good sharing/ appetizer dish. Hamachi collar, if you like the collar piece go for it. Tuna nori was very disappointing. Skewers we're good. I definitely wouldn't be back for dinner but would like to try their brunch menu one day, since that's what everyone raves about.

This restaurant is beautiful!!! Really in the middle of no where in Brooklyn. We ate in this little wood cabin with benches which was different. The service is impeccable! We heard a lot of hype on this soufflé pancake but honestly I didn't think it was the star of the show. Tasted like overcooked omelet! It's very eggy. The star of the show for me was their Katsu sandwiches!! The chicken one is amazing!!! Everything about this sandwich was well thought out. The garage chicken taste like chicken nuggets. The potato and egg dish is a bit heavy for my liking. The matcha is very good! Worth coming back to try different dishes. I'll deff be back

Order: onigiri, chilled tofu, ricotta dumplings, skate wing, sesame soft serveService: slow (gotta wave people down) but notably energetic and kindAtmosphere: large spacious room with ambient lighting. It was solidOnigiri: pass on this. Its just charred riceTofu: pretty solid, worth splitting with a friend. Sauce is a little strong after a couple bitesDumplings: my personal star of the night. If you're a fan of mushrooms, order this.Skate wing: didnt like the toppings but unsure what it was.Sesame: if you're a fan of sesame, you wont be disappointed. It is potent.
Be the first to ReplyThe hype is real.
Felt like I transported to Japan. Loved the deco, the food, the service - A+! Be sure to share the Japanese Souffle Pancake because it's delicious!

I have been to Rule of Thirds a few times and always had really good experience! Will definitely come back. Sesame ice cream was great!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and good ambiance, but ultimately was
Great service and good ambiance, but ultimately was disappointed with the food options after hearing the hype about this location for so long. Karaage and tonkatsu were solid choices, nothing out of the ordinary though (4/5). The oshizushi was interesting but I personally didn't like the flavor of the sakura leaves on the outside as it was more sour than expected. (3/5) Drinks-wise, my friends said they felt very strong- so here's a heads up for y'all! I may be back to give their brunch menu a try eventually when I muster the motivation to make it out to Brooklyn!
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service, super disappointed as we were celebrating
Terrible service, super disappointed as we were celebrating a birthday in the reservation, but they didn't say anything. Worse, we told them our cocktails we wanted to order, but the waiter forgot and they closed the bar early, despite us checking in to remind him of the drink. I regret tipping at all, as he messed up my girlfriend's birthday dinner. Thanks idiot!

Rule of Thirds is fantastic, I absolutely love the ambiance and the menu. The weekend is perfect because you can have a wonderful brunch and enjoy the hottokeki! I went on multiple occasions and I have to say that they absolutely deliver the experience every single time. Good portions, amazing to share with a S/O or friends. The thing is I had to book a week in advance to get a seat and you are paying the price for good food.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful venue for Japanese-inspired fare in Brooklyn.
Phenomenal food and drink options.

Delicious food, service was nice, they were super attentive and nice to my pup (: the ambiance was nice! Quite busy so would recommend making reservations
Be the first to ReplyWent here twice - once for lunch and once for dinner.
The lunch menu is underwhelming and doesn't offer a great selection despite the huge long line (food is a bit bland and I'm not excited to try it) BUT the dinner menu, holy smokes. We went for a fix prix menu near Christmas time and all the dishes were sooo good. I wasn't a fan of this restaurant before bc I had come here for lunch first but the dinner menu changed my mind.
Be the first to ReplyOkay, let me start with the positives.
The restaurant is BEAUTIFUL and I bet it has an even lovelier ambiance in the summer with all the outdoor seating options. It's such a charming place and really makes you feel special. Also, the service was great; all the staff were really nice and attentive. Unfortunately, that's ultimately what you're paying for, the vibe. We ordered a lot of food - duck hearts, tuna & nori, mazemen with pork jowl, nikujaga, and the hamachi collar. We also ordered a dessert that I can't remember the name of and some sake. The sake and mazemen were definitely the best choices and the tuna & nori was satisfactory, but the rest of the food was so mid and didn't leave any impression. And for the price you pay, nothing blew me away or really came close to it. I would probably come back here for brunch as I really want to try the souffle pancake, but otherwise, I would say dinner wasn't all that impressive.

During a rare trip to Brooklyn, my friend and I were surprisingly able to get reservations for a Saturday brunch at 12 pm. The restaurant is surprisingly large, but it was completely packed, so you definitely need reservations. The restaurant is very aesthetic, down to the menu and the plates. My friend got the tamago sando and I ordered the chicken katsu sando. My friend insisted that we also get the hottokeki which we saw that most other tables also ordered. For drinks, she ordered a hojicha latte and I got a melonade. After trying the hojicha, my friend declared it to be her favorite new drink, and my melonade was deliciously refreshing. As a fan of fried chicken sandwiches, I loved my sando and my friend enjoyed hers as well. The hottokeki was also delicious, but we were tragically unable to finish it between the both of us. I would highly recommend going to Rule of Thirds if you're ever in Brooklyn!

I can finally check this place off my bucket list! First, it's as cute as it looks in pictures. second, they don't take reservations so come early or expect to wait! I was lucky in finding parking nearby immediately but not so lucky in getting a seat at the restaurant. I put my name down and waited about 40 minutes for a table to empty. It was an outdoor table under the heat lamp but it was still chilly at times. My friends highly recommended the karaage so I was expecting it to change my life but it didn't. I would've preferred if the sauce was served on the side instead. I was also really looking forward to the soufflé pancake but I didn't expect it to taste so eggy like the Chinese bakery sponge cakes. It was extra eggy in the center. I was hoping it would jiggle like the usual Japanese soufflé pancakes but nope. I think my friends and I had fun digging into it though. The katsu sandwich was alright but didn't justify the steep price tag. All in all, I think I really paid for the aesthetics and not so much the food.

I really want to love this place because the ambience and decor is well curated, and the staff is friendly, but after having dined here twice I believe it is only okay. People praise it for being innovative and while I don't completely disagree, I find it hard to second that thought. My favorite thing here is probably the Nikujaga (American wagyu bowl) on their dinner menu. I enjoyed the soufflé pancake, but wish it was 2 smaller pieces instead of one big one. It gets overwhelming by the time you're halfway through. The salmon belly (fish of the day for the breakfast set) was delicious though.
