Walked in when they opened for dinner at 5pm and there was no availability for seating. We didn't make a reservation for a Saturday so that's understandable. (But it's always nice when restaurants keep some tables for walk-ins to keep the spontaneity of dining out, but that wasn't the case here.)The restaurant felt classy, dim-lit, and modern. The host told us a table would be ready in 45min or the bar is first come first serve. (The restaurant was basically empty the whole time we ate, and by the time we left after 45min, it was still the same. So I wasn't sure why we weren't able to get seated.)We sat at the bar and it was elbow-to-elbow uncomfortable. Bar seating is understandably tight, but this was impossible to even get into your seat without fully lifting out your chair. Our bartender however was a breath of fresh air and was very friendly. Our food came out quickly and was delicious. Our main course felt like it needed a sauce of some kind because it was a bit dry. However, the appetizer and dessert were on point.Knocking a star for the sardine packed bar seating arrangement and dry main course.Tip: Make a reservation before coming here.

(Lisa's rating = 85.) A fairly tasty array of Isreali fare in a romantic setting with impeccable service. We ordered:1. Salatim (selection of Israeli dips -- garlic labne, muhammara, hummus, and tahina with honey harissa -- with pita and za'atar)2. Israeli salad (cucumber, tomato, onion and pear)3. Fried cauliflower with tahina, golden raisins and dill* 4. Pomegranite labneh-marinated salmon kabob and harissa-marinated chicken kabob5. Konafi cake with shredded phylo, apricot labne, chantilly cream, and pistachio* = our favorite

Sabana is essentially a restaurant in the original Latin root "restaurare" to restore. Sabana restored my spirit with so many succulent dishes from the Middle East in a very welcoming atmosphere. Our server was so knowledgeable of the entire menu; she recommended a variety of dishes for us, first timers. All in all, it was a great and memorable experience. We cannot wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered take-out from this restaurant, which I enjoy for
I ordered take-out from this restaurant, which I enjoy for in-person dining, and was disapopinted that they refused to give me any kind of silverware. First, you pick up take-out at the restaurant next door, not at Sababa, which is a minor inconvenience but they could have indicated this at some point in the ordering process. The food was timely and they text me to pick it up - I was only a few doors down. I arrived and asked if there was silverware, and was told that there was no silverware, and I should go back to Sababa to get silverware. Outside and back to Sababa on a 22-degree night, and was told by the hostess that they also do not have silverware. They brought a person who appeared to be a manager out, who informed, "It's illegal to give out silverware, and they're really cracking down on it." I explained that I will have extreme difficulty eating salmon and rice with my fingers. She then told me it's illegal to give out silverware "unless it's from a take-out place." Well, I felt like I ordered take-out. Her best advice for me was to go to the Mexican restaurant down the street and literally steal silverware from their establishment ... apparently it's legal to give out silverware there. The food tasted great, but being told to steal silverware from another establishment spolied the meal. The experience was negative enough that I'll also stop eating there for dine-in also.

This place was amazing. A big group of us went for a special occasion and had the benefit of trying a large portion of the menu and it was incredibly delicious. My favorites were the eggplant, cauliflower, sea bass, and the hummus. Yes there are a million shades and flavors of hummus and all hummus is NOT created equal - and Sababa's was extremely good. I cannot say enough how good the food was. The ambiance is also lovely and the service excellent. Go seat there!!!
Be the first to ReplyThere is nothing - nothing - nothing authentic about
There is nothing - nothing - nothing authentic about Israeli food in this restaurant. Bland food, small serving, and BIG PRICE. Service was less than desirable - I'm sparing you the details. The combination of seasonings and sauces just don't work together! Who hired this chef, shocking. Our first time here and it will be also our last. I can't recommend this place. But, you should try it for yourself.

The right amount of food, if ordered with appetizers.
Be the first to ReplyModern Israeli.
Atmosphere is very nice with dim lights and lots of wood carved panels on the wall. The hummus special with the harissa sauce had a nice spicy flavor. The Israeli salad was very fresh and had a night light marinate. The freshly backed pita bread was amazing and I loved the chicken kabob. The chicken was moist but with a nice char.

I brought a friend for post-work drinks and small bites, and I was pleasantly surprised by all of the flavor we experienced (at such a good price point)! I was a bit disappointed, however, to learn that they no longer do a Happy Hour, despite it being advertised on their website. So if you're reading this and you manage Sababa's sites, please take down this page:sababauptown.com/new-pageI had the roasted cauliflower, hummus of the day with pita, eggplant, and steak kebab. All were great, though the small plates were the standout, especially the cauliflower. I never thought cauliflower was something to rave about, but Sababa chaned me--the crispy texture combined with the creamy tahina was absolutely perfect. The hummus of the day was a slightly sweet (though not a dessert hummus) and incorporated some berries. It was amazing with the warm pita. My thoughts: why would I pay $4 ever again for mediocre hummus from the grocery store when I could have this beauty for triple the price! So good it seemed like a bargain.Only knocking a star because the cocktail I ordered, the Halva World Away, was so-so. And the kebab dish seemed pretty standard, with almost-too-dry rice making up the bulk of the meal. I'd definitely try again though!

This is a great spot-- and I'm embarrassed that I have written a review yet after many many times of dining here and grabbing a drink at the bar!I feel relaxed and at home here-- service is wonderful. Johnny and Ramon will make sure you're taken care of at the bar. Johnny makes a mean and tasty espresso martini and Ramon has my palette down with a wonderful gin drink. Wonderful wines too.The food here-- well, I think you can't go wrong. I love hearing what the hummus of the day is-- the Chef who sometimes makes an appearance on the floor creates tasty dishes which always make me go home happy.Really have enjoyed the salmon and chicken kabob, and lamb shank. Egg plant appetizer is a great starter. Hummus with the steamy bread--Yumm! See what the hummus of that day is-- I've loved the pumpkin, strawberries and mushrooms ones! Really enjoyed the holiday special latkes too. Soo check it out, you might even see me there!

Be the first to ReplyWe went there a second time and this time with my parents.
2 stars because we were treated terribly. Don't get me wrong, the food is great. We have reached out to corporate but have never heard back nor received an acknowledgement. We have not been back since.

Any Israeli food is better than none, I suppose, but this bastardized and now run-down version with so-so service really disappoints. Where is Michael Solomonov when you need him.

If you have ever wondered what modern Israeli food is truly like, than look no further than Sababa. Most people consider it to be street food and typical dishes, such as kebabs. However, Sababa proves that all wrong. This restaurant provides their audience with a whole new take on what it means to experience modern Israeli food. All of their dishes are super healthy and delicious. You will be presently surprised on the unique characters of these dishes. We highly recommend Sababa on your next night out in the neighborhood.

I've dined at Sababa on many occasions and it has always been a fabulous meal. Even during the pandemic, a group of friends and I enjoyed a fabulous Rosh Hashanah meal outdoors. I especially like the salatim, pita & hummus, the eggplant dish and the fish kabobs.
Be the first to ReplySababa serves delicious food but their takeout order
Sababa serves delicious food but their takeout order process seems to be broken. Last year I had an issue that was resolved by ownership. Fine, it happens. I had another issue on May 20, 2022, when they failed to include two salmon entrees in my order. I called to say both were missing, and was assured I would receive a refund. The next day I got a refund for one of them. I then emailed management asking that they provide the full refund (using the same email thread that worked the last time), but I haven't received a response. It's disappointing. My advice to this restaurant would be to fix the takeout process or scrap it altogether. My advice to customers is to check your bag before you leave.
Be the first to ReplyBased on the Michelin listing, we were excited to try
Based on the Michelin listing, we were excited to try Sababa. The Salatin appetizer (selection of dips) did not disappoint. The turmeric-honey-harissa dip was particularly good, the sweetness of the dip offset by the spicy harissa. The garlic labne and the red pepper dip were also delightful. The accompanying pita, a beautiful round that was much puffier than a typical pita, was excellent. It's worth getting an extra pita for those dips. One Salatin was enough for two.We had looked forward to the Jerusalem Mixed Grill as a way to try three grilled meats, and that was definitely a mistake. When I asked for the steak and lamb to be medium-rare, the waitress said that was not possible because the meats are cooked in advance, so they would be medium to medium-well. Grilled meats are definitely not something to be cooked in advance! We tried it anyway, and the marinade definitely helped, but pre-cooking took the expected toll--little by way of meat juices, most pieces dry, and (yes, I was warned) generally harmed by overcooking. If I went back, I'd try the lamb shank, which Yelp photos suggest is juicy and flavorful, something not harmed by precooking. Some meat dishes do profit from being cooked in advance (e.g., stews), but grilled meats should always be cooked to order; it really doesn't take long to grill kabobs or meat slicesService was not stellar. The main came out before we were halfway done with the appetizer, the waiter was nowhere to be found when drinks were empty (I gave up on getting a second drink), and we had to ask another server for our check. The dining room was more than half empty, so there was not much excuse for the poor timing or inattentiveness.

This is one of our go-tos - the service is friendly and the food is reliably fantastic every time. The atmosphere is bustling, the decor is lovely - it's a great place to take guests from out of town!
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good.
We ordered the halloumi (app), eggplant (app), and the mixed grill for two. There were so few people at the restaurant at the time that we went (5ish pm). The waitress was appropriately attentive. However, there was a young man who just sort of hovered around us towards the end of our meal. We were one of two people in the restaurant at that particular time. I didn't see the need in grabbing our plates right away when one of us was done, but I was still finishing up.
Be the first to ReplyOh my, a special Passover meal at a great middle eastern
Oh my, a special Passover meal at a great middle eastern restauant was just what the Rabbi ordered! The Connecticut avenue corridor sports some terrific international cuisine and Sababba definitely fits the bill. While there for the Passover menu, we had to start with the Salatim. As other reviewers have pointed out this is a terrific way to start a meal with friends. My fave of the five salads/dips was the Brussel Sprout Baba Gnoush; very tasty. While this arrives with just two freshly baked pita's they are more than happy to bring more upon request; you'll definitely need that as there is ample dips on the Salatim! We also wanted to try the Pomegranate glazed chicken livers. Definitely a unique dish and again, plenty to share. The gravy was a bit sweet for our respect for traditional chicken livers, but it was still very tasty. From the special menu we had to jump on the Matzoh Ball soup; two humongous matzah and multiple spoons made one soup more than shareable. The treats of the meal were the entrees, a fantastic Salmon Chraimeh, baked and brought forth in a tomato sauce adorned with green olives was divine; the braised beef brisket was falling off the bone sitting aside tasty carrots and next to a sweet potato tzimme. They have a large al fresco space streetside, which thankfully was covered as it did spritz and sprinkle during our meal. Great wait staff, patient to explain items on the menu and their preparation. My advice to you is you don't need to wait for a special holiday to dine at Sababba; every trip will feel like one!

Sababa was by far one of my top mediterranean spots in the D.C. area. Of course, we had to start with all of the Salatim. The garlic Labne and the honey Harissa tahina were top tier, but they all were delicious. Had to get a second order of pita to wipe the little bowls clean of every bite. We tried the Kushari, which was unique but not our favorite. And then we got a steak kebab to share, which was cooked to perfection (melted in your mouth!) Don't skip on dessert, the konafi cake was a unique take on a traditional middle eastern dish - so delicious! The only thing that would make this place better is unlimited pita...
Be the first to ReplyThis review is for the Winter 2022 Restaurant Week menu.
Some friends and I came Friday night for an early dinner reservation. Half of us ordered the salmon/chicken and the other half got the lamb shank option. From the phenomenal service and recommendations from Stefon to our delicious meals, I would recommend this to any friend or enemy.Every single course was delicious! We started with the salatim and hummus, which is normally the 3 dips but due to our larger dinner party size the chef included the additional 2 dip/salads (sweet & sour carrots and baba ganoush). My favorite was the tumeric/tahini/honey harissa dip, as it had the best combo of salty, sweet and spicy. I only wish the pita to dip ratio was more even! (Then again, this really filled me up).The Israeli salad was fresh and light with a hint of tartness from the kumquat, while the heavier fried cauliflower paired nicely with it.For our courses, I had the split the salmon and chicken thigh options between myself and a friend. Both were exteremly tender and juicy. The salmon had a pickled onion topping it that helped cut the flavor profile, and the chicken had shishito peppers and harissa sauce to heat things up.My other friends that got the lamb shanks reported back that the meat was very tender and delicious as well. The rice was buttery and flavorful. Finally, the dessert, Konafi cake, had a light cheesy taste that is, as I like to say, not too sweet. I do wish the filo on top was a little crunchier, but am unsure if that is how it's traditionally made.Overall, a great RW experience! If you have time to visit before it's over (or just order these dishes after too!), take this as a sign to go with haste! One note - expect and be patient with a little longer wait time of dishes during RW as they will be busier. Service was pretty fast when we first arrived, but as the restaurant filled up it was slightly slower. I will definitely be back! Don't forget to try one of their cocktails, which I can no longer remember but had the carrot in it (something with Halva?).

Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately this place has gone downhill, and I can't say
Unfortunately this place has gone downhill, and I can't say it has anything to do with COVID. We have eaten here around ten times and have experienced the decline over a 2 year period. We had a reservation for six people at 8:30 on NYE. Two of us arrived before the others (which included my husband who made the reservation). The unnecessarily unfriendly hostess/sommelier informed me that we requested outdoor seating and would be sat outside in the street under a tent in the rain. The restaurant was about half full, and when I asked if there was a chance of getting a table indoors, she said she had three more parties of six coming in at 9:00, but she could try to squeeze us all around a four top. I decided to sit at the bar and have a drink while waiting for the rest of our party. The bartenders were engaged in a conversation with a young lady who was talking about her plans for the night and barely said 'hello' or engaged us. When the rest of our party arrived, my husband showed me on his phone that he had requested indoor seating. We showed the hostess, who proceeded to argue with us that her computer showed 'outdoor', and that the system puts 'indoor' for all reservations. I then told her that we still did not request outdoor seating. The gentleman manager stepped in and said it was not a problem and sat us at a six too that had been empty for 20 minutes. The hostess proceeded to walk past our table and give my sixteen year old son a nasty look (how mature!), and talk about us to other employees and guests at the bar (how incredibly unprofessional). We ordered three New Year's Eve menu specials, each costing $100 for two people. The food has gone downhill, with flavors not really tasting authentic anymore, but everything was good. A food runner dropped off one entree (duck) in front of my husband and we then literally sat for fifteen minutes waiting for the other entrees (skirt steaks) to arrive. The server acknowledged this and said that my husband must have gotten someone else's dinner and walked away, seemingly unfazed (based on past experiences here, timely and accurate ย food delivery is an ongoing issue). The other five dishes came out about five minutes later. We ate. The skirt steak was very good, but one third of the plate had couscous with raw turnip chunks, which was not good, and a massive amount of harissa to fill the other third of the plate. Our server came around, while the table was still full of dishes and empty glasses, and dropped the check off to me. She said, ' here is your bill...unless you guys want something else'. I was a bit taken aback that we were not offered dessert or after dinner drinks. So, I paid the bill and we left. The other three parties of six never showed up while we were there. In fact, we did not see a single party come in at 9:00. I don't know why the hostess was just trying to be rude, but she has mastered the art, based on our visits every time she works. Why work in the service industry? This was the last shot we are giving Sababa, based on the fact that the prior experience we had about six months ago was so bad that half our bill was comped by the manager. He had begged us to please try again, and told us to at what we had experienced (terrible and rude service, missing food and drinks, wrong drinks) was not their standard of service. Apparently, it is. We always spend at least $400 when we dine at Sababa, as a family of five with three teens. This place is definitely not worth the price. We loved the Oval room, and apparently it has been rebranded as a French restaurant and reopened. I hope the experience there will be better, as the restaurant group cycles servers through its locations.
