Heard about this place on TikTok and decided to try it out
Heard about this place on TikTok and decided to try it out while in Puerto Rico and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious and the service was great. We walked in with no reservation and they sat us within 20 minutes. The restaurant was full of people. The ambience was very date night vibes. I highly recommend getting the snapper or the short rib.

I would definitely recommend this spot for drinks at the bar! We had 2 rounds of our drinks. Not sure if you need reservations for that but I'd definitely get some because it was hard to reserve. Our reservation was for 10:30! The place was very intimate with the dim lighting and small space. Good for date night. Everything was pricey - just appetizer options were $18+ but we knew that before coming. I liked the tuna skewers the most but wish it came with more (esp for the price). The calamari was just okay. We also tried the popcorn chicken but it had a very weird aftertaste so we sent it back immediately. It's unfortunate because it was the dish with the most portion. Didn't even get a photo of it. I have a sweet tooth and love chocolate so I tried the warm chocolate cake and it was delicious! The staff was very welcoming and our waiter was attentive and nice.
0 stars for everything.
Everything from their service to their food was absolutely terrible. I hope they close because the disrespect they gave was unbelievable from the front desk to the owner of the company. Recommend no one come here ever. Even gave attitude online to a friend of mine Ernesto who also left a bad review. This place is HORRIBLE!
Beautiful restaurant in Puerto Rico, I highly recommend you
Beautiful restaurant in Puerto Rico, I highly recommend you make reservations in advance before coming out as even the bar seats are able to be reserved and if they are full you might not be able to go in or have a very long wait. I ordered a drink, some apps, one main dish, and a dessert to spit with my sister For apps we ordered the famous octopus and the shrimp bao buns. The octopus was good but the bao buns were the star of the night for me. A must have! We ordered the arroz con pollo off the specials of the night menu and it had good flavor but the best part were the plantains on top. To end we got the Nutella toast, I personally thought this was okay and wouldn't order it again. The mojito was good, on the stronger side and not a classic mojito since the mint was on top and not muddled in, I just took my straw and muddled it in to get the mint flavor Service was very nice as well.

I booked a reservation early in the morning for 6:45 PM, but it was cancelled shortly after. Since I was traveling on vacation, I didn't notice the cancellation until later in the day. When my girlfriend called the restaurant to see if there was any availability, we were told it was fully booked, which was disappointing but understandable. Then, about 10 minutes later, we noticed a spot open online and reserved it right away. Because we had just been told there were no tables, we wanted to confirm that the reservation was actually valid. That's when things went downhill. Instead of simply giving a polite explanation, the staff's replies came across as short and rude, almost like we were bothering them for asking. We only wanted reassurance, especially after the earlier cancellation. I understand that cancellations happen and tables can free up, but the way this was handled left a really negative impression. Needless to say we did not eat here and would recommend anyone who reads this to spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

What we had was pinchos atun, alcupurrias with crab which was okay, shrimp boa buns in a homemade bbq sauce which was oustanding. filet mignon with mushroom sauce which was flavorful, balanced seasoning, and cooked propperly. I had the veal cheeks braised in a creole sauce which was knock your socks off good. Fork tender, rich, flavorful, incredible. cocada dessert, and pot de creme salted caramel dessert. Every dish was Excellent. The wine list is extensive. Ask for the digital wine list, its more up to date and easy to skim through because it has the labels along with the name. When I come.back to Puerto Rico, I will be back here. Highly recommended. Cheers!

We had a table of 6... 5 of us got our meals. Finished our meals and the final meal still had not shown up. The waiter asked us if we could leave. Before bringing the last meal. Skip this place. I would recommend McDonald's over this dump. The food when it arrives is was cold and unoriginal. The steak was burned. Restaurant charged me 15$ open ketchup Mayo but I didn't order anything with a side of ketchup or mayo. Odd charge for a steak dinner but maybe if they brought the ketchup it would have made the meal more palatable. The lighting blinked the whole meal, and the restaurant was way too cold. I am not a Spanish speaker but wanted to try my hands at writing my review in Spanish.
Santaella is a classic and it's no wonder why when you
Santaella is a classic and it's no wonder why when you enter and get the chance to dine in. The restaurant was quite full, both with tourists and regulars alike, and we were promptly seated and whisked to a table near the back. Initially, we were slightly disappointed not to have a full view of the unique interior and also realized (unfortunately!) that we were seated underneath a very cold section of the restaurant. I mentioned this to our waiter who was very kind and came back with both a blanket and a cardigan for my partner to wear. We started off with some safe bets, between the arancini style tostadas and octopus which were both fantastic. My partner ordered the veal cheeks which were diving (~$46) and I ordered the pork shank but ultimately regretted not swapping dishes! The veal cheeks were soft, tender and bursting with flavor while the pork shank, while good, was a bit on the saltier side. We also ordered a side of sweet plantains not realizing what a large portion they end up giving you! All in all I was impressed by both the service and quality of food provided. Though San Juan restaurants tend to over-salt many of their dishes I thought Santaella's was quite good (with a small exception with the pork shank). Portions are quite sizable so recommend coming in hungry!

This place was highly recommended by a couple of people so my cousin and I decided to go and give it a try since we are visiting from New York City. We were seated by the bar. The bartender took a while to acknowledge us. We were not given a drink menu and had to ask for one. We ordered the popular watermelon mojito and it was so good and refreshing. We ordered a couple of appetizers: Atun pinchos, goat cheese quesadilla and shrimp tempura bao buns. Food was great. The goat cheese quesadilla is life changing, amazing. We then ordered the Budin de guayaba. It was plated beautifully but as soon as I saw it I noticed a hair on it. I tried to be as discreet as possible and told the bartender there was a hair on our dessert. He took the dessert back to the kitchen but did not apologize or try any type of service recovery. This was disappointing, this place could easily get a 5 star rating but you need to train your employees on customer service skills. The food isn't cheap so if I am paying for food I not only expect it to taste good but for there to be also exceptional customer service.

Fantastic lunch
Family of four stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday. We ordered six plates for the table, followed by three desserts. Everything was incredible. Great food, great service.
RUDE STAFF
Decent food and a horrible dining experience! I would never ever go back. You cant have decent food , and terrible and rude service! Never ever again! So many other lovely places to eat in PR with delicious food, and welcoming staff. Dont waste your money!!!
Disrespectful Staff and Lackluster Food โ
I usually donโt write reviews, but after seeing how this place replied to other guests, I feel like people should know what to expect. The staff here seems to think sarcasm is a substitute for hospitality. Instead of showing respect or trying to understand concerns, they go out of their way to mock paying customers. Itโs incredibly unprofessional and shows a total disregard for the people who keep their business running. Restaurants succeed because of their customers, and this crew clearly hasnโt learned that lesson. No one appreciates being spoken down to or ridiculed when something goes wrong. If you value respectful service and a welcoming environment, there are many other spots in San Juan that actually care about their guests. This place is not one of them. On top of that, the food was mediocre at best. It felt like a completely different restaurant from what we expected โ a classic bait-and-switch with a different menu and a totally different vibe that wasnโt clearly explained when booking. If you enjoy spending your money where the management refuses to own up to mistakes or even listen to feedback, then by all means, give this place a try. But if you care about good service, decent food, and people who actually appreciate their customers, youโre better off somewhere else. **** ie...their response to this will prove my point****
Bait and Switch at Santaella: A Disgraceful Experienceโ
We made a confirmed reservation for Santaella through OpenTable for a Sunday evening, fully expecting the celebrated experience of this renowned restaurant. However, upon arrival, we were shocked to discover that the restaurant had been completely replaced with a new concept, new staff, and an entirely different menu โ with zero on OpenTable Instead of apologizing for the confusion or taking even a moment to acknowledge the error, the staff tried pin the blame on us for not โreading the signs.โ That is an outrageous excuse when our reservation, photos, and confirmation all clearly indicated Santaella โ not whatever new place has taken over the location. Their attitude was dismissive, petty, and frankly unprofessional. They offered no accommodation, no apology, and no courtesy. It is unacceptable to mislead paying customers with a bait-and-switch situation, then gaslight them for showing up in good faith with a valid reservation. Be warned: if you book โSantaellaโ through OpenTable, you may walk into a completely different restaurant run by people who refuse to own up to their lack of communication โ and who will treat you as the problem if you dare to question it. Shame on this management team for their arrogant and condescendingg handling of loyal diners. We will never return
Spectacular
Spectacular food in a super classy setting ! The chef knows and loves his job and the meal reflects that. The tuna skewers, burrata and peaches salad, the quesadillas, empanadas are all superb beyond words. A must visit !!!
Well worth a visit
Recommended in passing but what a recommendation! Jorge H, our server, was attentive, informative and just truly amazing! Food was fresh, flavorful and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was as good as the food! Tuna lollipops were way beyond as was the octopus!! Will definitely return on our next vacation!
Luxurious, leisurely lunch with lasting memories
Stay alert and look for the door or you just might miss this hidden gem in San Juan. After a couple of museums, this was a short walk to a lovely lunch in a dining space with plants and running water. The food is fresh, delicious, and artfully presented. The wine list is more than adequate in fact extensive. Definitely one of the best meals we had in San Juan if not anywhere.

Extremely Disappointing Experience โ Not the Real Santaella Iโve visited Santaella several times in the past and always had a great experience. However, this recent visit was a total disappointment. After numerous calls trying to get a reservation, I was finally accommodated for Sunday nightโonly to find out upon arrival that it wasnโt actually at Santaella. No one informed us that the reservation was for a completely different setup on the rooftop, which has a different name, limited menu, plastic chairs, and an entirely different ambiance. We were expecting the refined Santaella experience, and instead were met with what felt like an improvised pop-up. I was with my two-year-old and they didnโt have high chairs, which is surprising for any restaurantโlet alone one that claims to be high-end. There was no hostess, and we had to wait standing up for 15 minutes holding a stroller. The entrance is through an alley, which looks run down, and you can see the staff carrying food up the same staircase the guests use. To make matters worse, there were no real bathroomsโjust portable toilets, which is unacceptable for any restaurant, especially one of this caliber. The staff was under-dressed, with our waiter wearing shorts. The food was equally disappointing. We ordered a burrata, which was just okay. Then came the $50 skirt steak, which was undercooked and drowned in sauce. We asked for it to be redone, cooked more and with sauce on the side. It came back cold and sweet-tasting, and we still donโt know what they addedโbut it was unpleasant. The arugula salad was the only decent dish. Our waiter, Eduardo, was kind and apologetic, and I truly appreciated his service. However, the manager never came to the table, and we were still charged full priceโeven for the steak we barely touched. Overall, this felt like a bait-and-switch. If youโre expecting the traditional Santaella experience, this rooftop version is NOT it. I would not recommend anyone visit this version of Santaella. A total letdown.
An experience!!
This is not just another restaurant. This is a place where you will have an experience within every bite. The food is so fresh and the quality is so great your taste buds arenโt even use to it. Bold, sharp and exquisite.
My husband and I recently visited PR for the second time
My husband and I recently visited PR for the second time (the first time was back in 2020) and both times we dined at Santaella...and both times were amazing! The drinks are so delicious, and the food is even better. The decor and vibe are super cute and it's a nice place to have dinner whether you're sitting at the bar or at a table. The service is great and would happily return again in the future!
Just like every other review says - YOU SIMPLY MUST HAVE
Just like every other review says - YOU SIMPLY MUST HAVE DINNER HERE IF YOURE COMING TO PR. Such a wonderful experience - amazing food, great service, beautiful vibes, tasty cocktails. 10/10 would recommend.
I recently visited to celebrate my birthday on a Thursday
I recently visited to celebrate my birthday on a Thursday night with a large party, the food left us satisfied (highlight was the fried red snapper with chimichurri sauce) however the experience not so much. I will admit most of the group were a little late however no one from management came to our table to give us a run down of what to expect (again they were also full which I was surprised to see on a Thursday night). Due to the large group our menu was prefixed which I also did not have a problem about however dishes just started to appear on the table from our appetizers with no explanation of what was being placed. We also did not have the opportunity to look at a menu had we wanted to add to our experience with additional food items. We were lucky enough to have ordered two rounds of drinks as the server rarely stopped by our group. Only twice and we really had to wave him down for that second round. If you're looking to have a large group I would not recommend as service will lack, more so than expected as the Caribbean isn't known for speedy attentive service. Good to try out for smaller parties where there is no preset additional gratuity as food and drink is good and maybe they would work to earn the tip. (Over $500) from our party as a "service charge". Unfortunately no pics as again the experience left much to be desired
The sea bass was amazing.
Service is always great. The mojitos do the trick. Parking is always a challenge - valet can be a long wait.
We had a nice dinner our with friends there.
The service was great. The cocktails were delicious. The food was good. The place is pricey so be prepared if you visit. Overall we had a good time.
Fab! Great food, amazing drinks, cool ambiance.
The upstairs area Azotea is only open Sundays but it's awesome too. Tuna poke was the best dish... as well as the truffle beef sliders and the wahoo ceviche. Def a must!
Great ambience.
Hidden in la placita. I would go again. Recommend getting a reservation as they don't seem to have room for walk in
Worst restaurant ever with rude and inept customer service.
I cancelled a reservation verbally and spoke to a hostess who confirmed there was no charge. They never cancelled it on their end and they charged me a cancellation fee and then hung up on me when I asked for a refund. The exact words were "take it up with your CC company" and then swiftly hung up on me. Horrible way to treat customers and do business- do not book!
Really good food.
Severe problem when we can e to dessert and three of the seven desserts on the menu were out. It's 6:45, how are you out of so many desserts? It's about 20 minutes we've ordered the remaining and nothing appears to be coming anytime soon.

Delicious! Lovely ambiance with excellent service, food, and cocktails. They were able to cater to my kids taste and a tree nut allergy.
Came for a best friend's 30th.
Who hyped this place up and made reservations WEEKS ago. Food and drinks were actually good! The chefs and bartenders know how to do their jobs... but the staff could use a bit more training. The vibe seems to be hire good looking men with one earring and none of them really serve lol. I had to get up to grab our menu's, get extra chairs when we reserved a table prior, wait over an hour to order a second round of drinks... etc.The place has a good vibe and I hope this was just a one time occasion cause everyone in the back end of the house was impeccable! Dishes were great! I would just loved if the front end service had the same energy. The food/drinks are certainly worth a try if you're in the area!
Everything - food, service and decor were wonderful.
We had a great time.Highly recommend for any occasion.

My bf and I were disappointed at the restaurants ability to offer food options. When you come to a fine dining restaurant and you think they know their business in terms of how many are coming and are reserved. But Santaella failed! They were out of the appetizer we wanted. And the cherry on top, they said we are out of desserts. Only have one left. What? Are you kidding? This is what I call poor management. I chose them over marmalade for our anniversary dinner and regret it. Otherwise our entrees were cooked good. But other things made this is an underwhelming experience because I was excited looking at their menu

Santaella is a perfect restaurant for a nice dinner with friends or family. The atmosphere is fun and elegant and can get loud. There is a var area and tables to sit and eat or order drinks. The appetizers are all incredible and delicious; my personal favorites are the Tuna Tar Tar Tacos and the Goat Cheese Quesadilla. The primary plates are also delicious, but I enjoy ordering many appetizers with a group and trying the varying tasty dishes. The food and drinks are served quickly, the staff is very friendly and professional Santaella offers the best drink menu I have yet to see. Every time I visit, I try a new cocktail and have never been disappointed. Santaella is my favorite nice dining restaurant in Puerto Rico; I recommend it to anyone visiting or living near San Juan. (Sidenote: the Nutella Sandwich is the best dessert)
Amazing! The best meal we had in San Juan.
The waitstaff was friendly and efficient. The cocktails were great. The appetizers were good. My favorite was the croquettes. My son and I both had the filet. Delicious! There was plenty of food. I ended up sharing some of mine with my son. We had desserts. He had the baked Alaska. I had the molten cake. Loved them. I would go back the next time I visit San Juan.
Amazing place for a nice dinner with friends.
Expensive but treat yourself. Service was great and friendly especially since Puerto Rico just won against Venezuela. Hehe. But amazing food, highly recommend chicken with polenta. Very underrated.
Food and service couldn't have been better.
Carlos was so attentive to our large party and made perfect recommendations. He handled a challenging table like a true pro. Every dish was better than the last. All of us agree that we would definitely go back.

Food...service and ambiance. This restaurant has it all . Best experience!!!! I can't wait to go back!!! Incredible food!
One of best meals we have had anywhere.
We ordered several tapas which were all fantastic. Also ordered a couple main dishes and dessert, all very good. The service was spot on and the ambiance is great. Also had a nice bar selection. Best meal we had in San Juan and definitely in our top 10 of all time. Just go.
I dined here last weekend and I really would not recommend
I dined here last weekend and I really would not recommend it. Reservations are hard to come by, but have a $50 cancellation fee FYI. The location was unsuspecting, but easy to find. The actual restaurant was beautiful, with notable greenery towards the right of the restaurant, though this seating area is reserved for large parties. We sat on the left side, and the table next to us was very loud, with people moving in and out of the table and talking very loudly which made it difficult for us to even hear each other. The menu is extremely expensive. We were interested in the filete angus, but they had run out! We had to settle with the chicken fricasee which serves two and costs $38. To be honest, I can't believe a restaurant seemingly of this caliber would even serve such a dish. It tasted like a cheap cheese and mashed potato dish, and I don't even think I could taste the chicken at all. It was practically inedible and we both felt sick after a few bites. We ended up taking the rest home but throwing it away. We had to flag down other waiters throughout our dining experience because our waiter was nowhere to be found. They also charged us $8 for still water (but served us tap) which we caught on the bill, and they were able to take this off. Perhaps there are other dishes are much better than what we ordered, but I was shocked that they could even serve such a bad dish on their menu. Overall, I would not eat here again. 2/5
Maybe an off day?
This was my second visit to Santaella. I was really impressed on the first visit with the quality of the food. Something was amiss this second visit. Was it an off day? I ordered the Alcapurrias de Cangrejo as an appetizer. The alcapurria was thick and gummy. It tasted like it was not fully cooked and it was very thick with the crab meat heaped on top. I expected the meat to be inside of it as is customary. It was very ordinary, like something I would get at a food truck. The pastelon was excellent the first time and was very salty with less flavor the second time. The arroz mamposteao was just ordinary and lacked flavor. It was expensive for $14. The mojito was expensive for $14 and was ordinary. I had better for less elsewhere on the island. Overall, it was just an ordinary experience.
Fantastic!
One of the best restaurants in San Juan. The food is delicious and the staff is great. I would definitely recommend it!

I brought my wife here for our Valentines date and I was disappointed. First you have to get a reservation before coming in. The ambience was great and perfect for a date. We ordered the chicken fricasee which serves two people which costs $38. The cheese taste just overpowered the whole dish and barely any chicken there. It felt like a cheap chicken casserole. They also charged us 8 dollars for bottled still water where literally it's not a plastic bottle but from tap water. Service was very slow. I don't recommend this place at all especially to incoming tourists.
Very exclusive restaurant and cocktail bar in San Juan in
Very exclusive restaurant and cocktail bar in San Juan in the heart of La Placita! I came here with my wife and we were actually pretty sad that LA placita is now full of Americans and tourists. We were like - where do all the PR people go? They make reservations to here! You need reservations to get in here so make sure to make them. We ordered a few martinis for drinks and they were very very good. Premium alcohol. We then ordered the tuna pinchos which was my favorite thing on the menu!! For entree we ordered the lechon and it was sooooo good!! Cured inside yet crunchy outside in the skin. Finally we ordered a baked Alaska for dessert bc my wife wanted something on fire. All of that was enough for the two of us PLUS leftover. So although pricey, portions are huge and you can share. I will come back here again when I visit PR. LOVED THIS PLACE
Great food, great atmosphere.
This was among the best food and best cocktails we tried in Puerto Rico.
First time there and very good food and drinks.
The goat cheese quesadilla was very good, my wife loved it! Also had the beef empanadas. The crust on these was thin and cooked perfectly! Definitely will do them again! For an entree, we had the ground beef casserole, very good. But the rice and specifically beans.... The best!
Great upscale Puerto Rican inspired meal at the bar
We got a reservation at the bar for two people. We were greeted immediately by the bar tender who provided great recommendations based on what we liked. Had a house old fashioned which was delicious. We also ordered the octopus, tuna skewers, and pork shank, everything was prepared perfectly and had excellent and unique flavors. Service was great through the whole experience. We ended the meal with the flan which was the proverbial icing on the cake! Highly recommended!!
Fantastic
Amazing food, great service, and a wonderful ambience. The tuna sesame appetizer is unreal. All of the fish is super fresh, and they make delicious cocktails (martinis especially). Highly recommend.
Crooks
Upon arrival the environment was nice but loud. Through out our dining the music would go from loud to extra loud. The food was ok. My friends enjoyed their meal. Their were some loud men at another table and we were told they were connected to the owners and basically allowed to act in a disturbing way. This place is more like a night club vs an elegant restaurant. THIS ESTABLISHMENT ARE STRAIGHT CROOKS!! We received our bill and asked for it to be split in 3. The waiter cheeky comes bk and charge me 182. And my friends the correct amount of 91.94. The total bill was 294. I told the waiter and he says he will take care of it. Well.. my bank then alerted me of possible fraud.. I was charged 91.94x 4 and 182.00. I called the establishment then next day only to be disrespected, yelled at and told that the charges were correct and then hung up on. I filed a claim with my bankโฆ donโt go here unless you want to be ripped off. A very dishonest establishment. In reading reviews on here and yelp this is a common practice of this restaurant! Stay clear!!
Such a Treat
Definitely need a reservation for this culinary treat. We had the ceviche, arugula salad and sea bass. Each dish was perfectly prepared and large enough to share. For my wifeโs birthday we had the Baked Alaskan which came out flaming as the waiters sang a spirited happy birthday. Truly great.
