Disappointed!
Not what I expected. The food was decent, however it didn’t WOW me. The service was subpar and the cleanliness of the establishment was questionable. Not star worthy.
Be the first to ReplyHas really gone downhill
I ate here years ago and it was fantastic so it was disappointing to experience this latest menu. This time around it was a lot of complex flavors that really didn't go well together, to be honest. There was a lack of cohesion and the menu seems to just be all over the place. Yes, there were a couple of dishes that were excellent, but overall it was just meh - and we even left hungry and got burgers on the way home... It's also super pricy for what you get. Great spot circa 2016 but would avoid today.
Be the first to Reply2nd best restaurant EVER
This is my 2nd best restaurant I’ve ever been to in the entire world. Of course with tasting menus there’s some items I couldn’t went without having such as the qual & I have to bite that most if not all of the items are extremely short lived meaning they’re small & you’ll probably be hungry when you leave here. The place is byob & they’ll even allow you get your liquor delivered here during dinner via “drizzly”. The restaurant is extremely small & decorations are minimal however the 90’s type hip hop soundtrack was pleasing to say the least. I believe Twas a banana whitefish which was the highlight of the meal. Truly mind blowing dish. Also the “loops” desert was probably The best dessert I’ve ever eaten EVER. The chef says it’s akin to front loops but my God it’s so much more. After discovering that we didn’t bring any alcohol the chef gave my wife & I some whiskey shots & even took a shot with us. Cool place coupled with creative & delicious food make this a must for Michelin star/tasting menus while in Chicago.

My husband and my two sons had dinner at this gem last night. This morning we were still oohing and aahing over one of the most unique meals we've ever had. With one Michelin star, the unpretentious entrance and cool vibe of the restaurant gives hints of the out-of-the-box tasting menu. Strange -- but delicious twists came with every course. the flavors were surprising and DELICIOUS. Loved having the chef serve most courses himself. Highly recommend! Also enjoyed that it's BYOB.

We have been looking forward to our visit for some time. The restaurant is small & cozy on the dramatic side (all black with mirrors on the ceiling).
The service was ok, one of the servers/food runners was really good. The rest seemed quite uncomfortable in the dining room so we guessed they were part of the kitchen team.
The technique and food presentation was stunning. The food was mostly good but many dishes were salty - not well seasoned but very salty.
There was a ravioli with quail egg that was delicious but presented for one bite, one big bite which kind of made it loose its magic.
Overall very strong technique, innovative and fun. Our disappointment came first from the chairs, very, very uncomfortable. They were short. But the deal breaker was the music that was played. It was so loud you had to literally yell at your party to have a conversation, it was difficult to hear the servers. In addition, it was not just loud but aggressive. A lot of “f” words and really aggressive lyrics. Had we not already paid for our meal, we would have walked out.
It may seem petty to some but it is important to care for the entire experience of your guests. This was so overwhelming it shadowed the hard work from the culinary team.
Helpful Hints for Out of Towners
- Bring your own bottles-- wine and liquor welcome.
- Don't be shocked at first at the ramshackle environs; the room is small, the windows are painted over, the chairs are flimsy and the music is loud and raucous.
- Visit the chef's other restaurant Entente instead, if you want to avoid the uncomfortable frat house setting.
- Take a cab or Uber to Schwa, because parking is sparse on this stretch of Ashland Avenue.
- The neighborhood is fairly safe, but mind your Ps and Qs.
- The attitude here is frat-like and immature. Avoid complaining, avoid making special requests and just roll with it.
- The first dish is typically meant to shock you into thinking you've made a big mistake, just roll with it. The fireworks start with the second dish.
- Don't be offended by the loud, aggressive music, it's meant to be naughty, cheeky, and radical, not oppressive or abusive.
- The servers are plainspoken and friendly, but not really bastions of culinary wonder. They're difficult to hear over the music anyway.
- If it's winter time, and you're finished, call your Uber from your table, because there is no lobby to wait in.
Incredible!!!
This is one of the most unique and unforgettable dining experiences I have ever had. Small, great vibe, outstanding service and amazing food. Eclectic Prix fixe menu with so many tastes and ingredients you can't begin to define it. Best of all is that the place is BYOB! Amazing to try to match wines with the unique menu. Total of about 25 seats. Kitchen attached and active. Visit the kitchen and do a shot with the staff. Well worth the money and effort to get a reservation.

What a wonderful dining experience! An eclectic prix fixe menu with multiple unforgettable courses. Even though I am not a foodie I found the each course memorable. The restaurant is a GYOB which helps keep the price down although it's somewhat of a tradition to bring a bottle of tequila fir the chefs and kitchen staff. Tge only drawback is that reservations are not easy to come by.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Amazing meal for foodies
Dined with my daughter. We so enjoyed the vibes, the music, the staff, ambience, etc. The food was AMAZING!!! our first course was the "Arnold Palmer". arrived on a tray of artificial turf with cubes of food on gold tees. Way fun and Way delicious. Each course was constructed, deconstructed, reconstructed: original and tasty beyond belief.
we brought a bottle of whiskey for the kitchen and a bottle of white and red for us. The staff guided us on wine choice for each course. An entertaining evening. Can't wait to return. :)
Loving it for the last 13 years....
One of my all time favorites since first time i dined there in 2006. I have been a regular since. Well over a dozen times there, alone, with family and with friends. Always happy.
Lately reservation process getting easier as they answer their phones.
BYOB with very low corkage fee.
Music can be loud, can be rap or punk or whatever -- all part of the vibe of being there.
Small, intimate space.

RUN FAR AND FAST
My fiance was sick the week of our reservation so I called 3 different days to cancel before the reservation day and they wouldn't answer their phones. Then they still charged my credit card $400 and won't let us come in there to eat so basically I paid them $400 for nothing.
