Sepia Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Sepia is truly a gem
An amazing restaurant, with well deserved recognition by Michelin. Since there were three of us, we tried everything we could. Each of us picked the four-course menu with the choice of one dish per course and we added the wine pairings also available. For the first course we had the fluke crudo, asparagus, rye, brown butter, caper, plus the caramelized onion consommé, delice de Bourgogne, sourdough and the steak tartare, crispy potato, mimolette, horseradish. Then the second course one of us had a sablefish pastor, grilled pineapple, infladita and morita chile and the venison shabu-shabu, hon-shimeji mushroom, chestnut, date, chili crisp. Following that we moved to the third course grilled short rib, black trumpet mushroom, parsnip, yorkshire pudding, the monkfish, pickled clams, white asparagus, horseradish, dill and last but not least the rohan duck breast, baby carrot, marcona almond, harissa-duck doughnut, chermoula. For dessert we loved the cannelé de bordeaux, buttered rum diplomat cream, roasted pineapple sherbet, tarragon and the cinnamon babka, golden raisin, crème fraiche ice cream, bay leaf. A very strong wine list, ask for Alex and you will great excellent service.
Excellent service, food, wine and atmosphere.
The experience was wonderful, highly recommend!!
Food has its own style I think that's why it got 1 star.
However the flavor is not quite surprising. Have to say that wine paring is kinda niceee! The best part is the service by miss Kim the other night! Love her! The proper distance and the perfect smile, showing her absolute profession! It was kinda fully booked on a Thursday night, so it must have its own special atmosphere.

So first thing, someone at our table had a live worm in their serving of fish. As in, it was still moving. She pointed it out to the server who later came back saying "it happens sometimes" and someone who I'm guessing was the head of front of house came by saying pretty much the same thing. That monkfish are bottom feeders and it happens sometimes. They offered free extras instead of comping her meal, and the chef didn't come out and apologize or anything. They ended up giving us our cocktails free, and refunded the fish but that was it. Other than that, the food was incredible and very creative. Just maybe don't order the monkfish.
My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's day.
We did the tasting menu specifically for Vday. The ambiance of the place is soooooo cozy and cute. I really liked how intimate it felt. The bartender made an absolutely delicious drink that tasted just like a pb&j and was served in the cutest milk carton. Each course was so different and unique- we took this opportunity to try some new things and we weren't disappointed! The flavors were all very good and very different. Our favorite was the caviar- it was perfectly balanced and my favorite dish. If you struggle with textures, you'll probably struggle a bit. Our only tip is that it's a lot of slurpy and different texture foods, it would be good to balance them with some more solid textured dishes.
Excellent restaurant! Great food, ambiance, and service.
For our four-course menu, we got the steak tartare, venison shabu-shabu, rohan duck breast, and the coconut key lime custard. The only dish I didn't care for was the venison. I've never had venison before. It was prepared well. However, it had this gamey aftertaste that I didn't care for. The rest of the dishes were very good! In hindsight, I probably would've enjoyed the crispy ricotta gnudi over the venison. We added on the golden Kaluga caviar, which was a bit odd. I wouldn't get it again. In my opinion, quality caviar stands on its own and doesn't need extra ingredients. However, I appreciate the attempt to make it more interesting. The wine pairing was superb. We enjoyed Sepia and would consider coming back next time we're in Chicago.
A new favorite dining spot in Chicago.
The service was great, and the courses were both beautiful and delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Good food, good service and beautiful ambience.
Recommend going at least once if you're in Chicago!

Sepia might be one of my favorite restaurants now! The food, the service and the ambiance all were amazing! Forgot to mention the drinks.. so good. I'm uploading pictures of what we got and the menu but overall we couldn't have been happier! The meals were priced at $90 and you could pay extra for wine pairing but instead we got different cocktails. We will back in no time again!

My boyfriend and I chose this spot as our backup and I was honestly slightly dissatisfied with the meal. The ambiance was nothing special. For the restaurant having a Michelin star, I was expecting a slightly more refined interior, especially as the food they were serving was primarily fish and caviar. The menu is somewhat set, although they allow you to choose between 3 options for each course, which allowed for a nice variety of dishes between us. They also allow you to add a caviar dish for an additional $25 dollars. Hesitant, we went for it, and it ended up being the best part of our entire meal. The drinks were mostly disappointing. I ordered some drink with boba at the bottom and the boba was inedible. It was way too chewy and hard, I struggled to even finish the drink. What I find at most of these restaurants is that many of their dishes are very umami-foward, which results in dishes that all taste practically the same. The fish and meat was made very well, but it was all very salty and umami to the point where it was borderline unpleasant. The desserts were decent, but the best was the slice of gold cake they brought for our anniversary celebration. I'm glad I checked this place out, but for a good Michelin-starred meal, I'd go elsewhere.

This place is worth every single penny and all the accreditations it has! We went here for my husbands birthday with a group at 6 and I absolutely loved this experience. I was honestly shocked to see so many poor reviews! The food was absolutely fantastic, served with perfect wine pairings from wait staff that was incredibly knowledgeable about what they were serving! The only thing I want to note is that this is an experience, not just a dinner! The courses are purposefully timed out to truly give you time to savor each course and digest before your next course, I think a lot of people took this as being forgotten about by their waiters since we're so use to getting our food immediately eating and leaving under an hour. That isn't the case with this restaurant and I would fully allot for at least two hours if not three. I cannot stress enough how amazing this restaurant was. I will definitely return!
Excellent!
Fantastic experience at Sepia we had the tasting menu with the wines and it was fantastic. The service was excellent and the atmosphere romantic, we loved it
A deserved star
Accustomed to Michelin ratings, we found in this restaurant the qualities highlighted by this star: - A very pleasant setting, of discreet elegance, with sufficiently spaced tables. - Attentive, friendly and very professional service - Subtle and refined cuisine, with very good products. The menu offered, in four courses with options, is very balanced. Presentation, successful marriage of flavors and textures for portions meeting European standards delight the eyes and the palate. - The wine list is international and very extensive. The cocktails are original and delicious. We drank a good Californian red wine. An excellent evening, therefore, fully confirming the Michelin opinion, for a justified price.
Excellent creative cuisine with an impressive wine list
Sepia provided a delightful dining experience with comfortable ambiance, friendly, attentive service, and great food. The format is interesting with a four course tasting menu but with several options to select for each course as well as an option for two supplements (caviar appetizer and tete de moine cheese for a cheese course). The wine list is impressive with a range of well selected wines from major growing areas worldwide with costs ranging from fairly reasonable to very expensive. The quality of the dishes was outstanding with creative flavors and combinations of Asian and Western cuisine. Reservations are strongly advised. This is well worth a visit!
Special mother daughter dinner
Girls trip with my daughter. We wanted a special night out and sepia delivered. We did the 4 course tasting menu with wine pairings. We added the optional cheese course before dessert. Each bite was amazing! Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!!

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
