Excellent service, food, wine and atmosphere.
The experience was wonderful, highly recommend!!
Be the first to ReplyFood has its own style I think that's why it got 1 star.
However the flavor is not quite surprising. Have to say that wine paring is kinda niceee! The best part is the service by miss Kim the other night! Love her! The proper distance and the perfect smile, showing her absolute profession! It was kinda fully booked on a Thursday night, so it must have its own special atmosphere.

So first thing, someone at our table had a live worm in their serving of fish. As in, it was still moving. She pointed it out to the server who later came back saying "it happens sometimes" and someone who I'm guessing was the head of front of house came by saying pretty much the same thing. That monkfish are bottom feeders and it happens sometimes. They offered free extras instead of comping her meal, and the chef didn't come out and apologize or anything. They ended up giving us our cocktails free, and refunded the fish but that was it. Other than that, the food was incredible and very creative. Just maybe don't order the monkfish.
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's day.
We did the tasting menu specifically for Vday. The ambiance of the place is soooooo cozy and cute. I really liked how intimate it felt. The bartender made an absolutely delicious drink that tasted just like a pb&j and was served in the cutest milk carton. Each course was so different and unique- we took this opportunity to try some new things and we weren't disappointed! The flavors were all very good and very different. Our favorite was the caviar- it was perfectly balanced and my favorite dish. If you struggle with textures, you'll probably struggle a bit. Our only tip is that it's a lot of slurpy and different texture foods, it would be good to balance them with some more solid textured dishes.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent restaurant! Great food, ambiance, and service.
For our four-course menu, we got the steak tartare, venison shabu-shabu, rohan duck breast, and the coconut key lime custard. The only dish I didn't care for was the venison. I've never had venison before. It was prepared well. However, it had this gamey aftertaste that I didn't care for. The rest of the dishes were very good! In hindsight, I probably would've enjoyed the crispy ricotta gnudi over the venison. We added on the golden Kaluga caviar, which was a bit odd. I wouldn't get it again. In my opinion, quality caviar stands on its own and doesn't need extra ingredients. However, I appreciate the attempt to make it more interesting. The wine pairing was superb. We enjoyed Sepia and would consider coming back next time we're in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyA new favorite dining spot in Chicago.
The service was great, and the courses were both beautiful and delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyGood food, good service and beautiful ambience.
Recommend going at least once if you're in Chicago!
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I chose this spot as our backup and I was
My boyfriend and I chose this spot as our backup and I was honestly slightly dissatisfied with the meal. The ambiance was nothing special. For the restaurant having a Michelin star, I was expecting a slightly more refined interior, especially as the food they were serving was primarily fish and caviar. The menu is somewhat set, although they allow you to choose between 3 options for each course, which allowed for a nice variety of dishes between us. They also allow you to add a caviar dish for an additional $25 dollars. Hesitant, we went for it, and it ended up being the best part of our entire meal. The drinks were mostly disappointing. I ordered some drink with boba at the bottom and the boba was inedible. It was way too chewy and hard, I struggled to even finish the drink. What I find at most of these restaurants is that many of their dishes are very umami-foward, which results in dishes that all taste practically the same. The fish and meat was made very well, but it was all very salty and umami to the point where it was borderline unpleasant. The desserts were decent, but the best was the slice of gold cake they brought for our anniversary celebration. I'm glad I checked this place out, but for a good Michelin-starred meal, I'd go elsewhere.

Sepia might be one of my favorite restaurants now! The food, the service and the ambiance all were amazing! Forgot to mention the drinks.. so good. I'm uploading pictures of what we got and the menu but overall we couldn't have been happier! The meals were priced at $90 and you could pay extra for wine pairing but instead we got different cocktails. We will back in no time again!

This place is worth every single penny and all the accreditations it has! We went here for my husbands birthday with a group at 6 and I absolutely loved this experience. I was honestly shocked to see so many poor reviews! The food was absolutely fantastic, served with perfect wine pairings from wait staff that was incredibly knowledgeable about what they were serving! The only thing I want to note is that this is an experience, not just a dinner! The courses are purposefully timed out to truly give you time to savor each course and digest before your next course, I think a lot of people took this as being forgotten about by their waiters since we're so use to getting our food immediately eating and leaving under an hour. That isn't the case with this restaurant and I would fully allot for at least two hours if not three. I cannot stress enough how amazing this restaurant was. I will definitely return!
Be the first to ReplyFood was magical, wait staff was delightful.
The wine pairing was great and our server knew quite a bit about all the wines. Absolutely going back.
Be the first to ReplyWhile Sepia may not have those eye-catching dish
While Sepia may not have those eye-catching dish presentations ideal for food influencer profiles, this may have been one of my favorite dinners from a flavor perspective. Pictures honestly don't do this place justice at all. A lot of the dishes are served in bowls that don't allow them to showcase the beautiful combination of flavors and layers of complexity that are contained within. There was definitely a more casual atmosphere, with a diverse set of customers. At this price point, it seems like a good entry point for people to who want to try a fancier Chef's tasting menu. It didn't seem like those restaurants that require sport coats, where everyone was either a seasoned fine diner or celebrating a milestone occasion.Sepia is probably one of the most affordable Michelin tasting menus in Chicago. For under $100 per person you can create your own 4-course menu, with 4 different options per course. With the complimentary amuse bouche, bread service, and mignardise added in the mix, it was actually a decent amount of food. You can also add a caviar course, cheese course, or order extra dishes a la carte in case you wanted even more variety. Amuse Bouche - Brioche w/ prosciutto and jam:This was a great first bite with a sweet and salty profile. The sweet brioche and jam paired perfectly with the salty prosciutto.Golden Kaluga Caviar, smoked sablefish, grilled spinach, shiro dashi butter:I've probably only had caviar a handful of times in my life, but this is hands down my favorite rendition. The smokiness of the fish, the saltiness of the caviar, and the richness of the dashi butter created the ultimate savory flavor. Roasted foies gras custard, satsuma, malted sunchoke, brown butter:I honestly couldn't pick out each element individually, but as a whole this was just delicious. The foies gras supplied that fatty richness, then there was a temperature contrast with the cold custard and some crunchy elements from the malted sunchoke. Probably my favorite dish of the night.Crab chawanmushi etoufee, smoked trout roe, andouille:Again, this was served in a bowl so you couldn't fully appreciate with your eyes how great this actually tasted. It was almost closer to a hearty cup of soup with plenty of meaty crab and sausage. The Cajun spices and seasonings were bold and generated so much flavor in each bite. Beef striploin, baby carrot, café de Paris sauce, beef bottarga:I already knew the beef was gonna be great, but the sleeper on this plate was carrot. I'm definitely a meat and potatoes guy, but that carrot just stole the show. The café de Paris sauce had kind of a curry accent to it.Manjari namelaka, rice dulce de leche, toasted koji ice cream:This was the sweeter of the two desserts and every element had a luxurious richness to it.Bruleed banana crepe cake, malted milk, tonka bean ice cream:The tonka bean ice cream had a bit of a milder flavor, and the crepe cake has that "not too sweet" flavor if that's what you prefer.Pandan marshmallow, white chocolate lemon profiteroles:Tasted like elevated rice crispies and a moist lemon cake in cookie form. The perfect bite to cap off the meal.Overall, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed dinner Sepia. I can't believe I used to walk right past it on Randolph all these years and never tried it. Sepia's flavors and creativity along with the great value for a Michelin tasting menu is unmatched.
Be the first to ReplyWe came here on a date night.
We were 15 mins late and they held our table which was nice. The ambiance is full of mostly middle aged to elderly folks. Decor is attractive but not any particular style. The noice level is actually relatively high because of the tile floors and brick walls. The ambiance is super loud. The waitstaff came over quickly and took our drink order. The menu is a little different from other tasting menus in that you choose from four courses. They gave us our meals quickly and with little hassle. Generally the food was good and nicely presented. It didn't knock my socks off though and came short of what I have come to expect from Michelin star places. I feel like it is a lot of hype for decent but not wow food. Value for money, probably won't come here again.

We had a fantastic meal here--easily top five we have ever had! The courses had an amazing balance between thoughtful dishes cooked to perfection and exciting plates that defied expectations. Service was top notch and they gave us an extra cake slice for my birthday that we were celebrating. The ambiance is modern but classic with nice continuities from the exterior and throughout the interior. Our favorite courses were the roasted duck breast and rillette doughnut, stable fish and salad, and beef tartar. The crispy soft boiled egg was surprising and delightful. You really can't go wrong with desserts, but we loved the banana crepe cake and manjari namelaka.

Food tastes amazing, service was really nice, the vibe was also great! Perfect place to celebrate Valentine's Day!
Be the first to ReplyWe had a great experience at Sepia.
We walked in a little bit early for our reservation. My husband and I grabbed drinks at the bar and they were delicious. Our table was ready before they finished our drinks though and they delivered the drinks straight to our table. It was so hard to pick what we wanted for our courses because everything sounded devine. The staff was all around very knowledgeable about the dishes and the pairings and they gave recommendations when we couldn't decide which dish we wanted. The ambiance was very cozy but upscale. It wasn't super quiet, but it wasn't loud either. We can hold a conversation without feeling like we had to yell or whisper. Next time I'm in Chicago, I may have to give Sepia another visit to taste dishes I missed out on. If you are looking for a Michelin experience that's welcoming and lacking the stuffiness, this is the place! It was $89PP, $25PP (full table participation) for the Golden Kaluga Caviar, and we added the wine pairings for $59PP. I recommend this because it elevates your taste buds and the pairings chosen exceptionally. Some pictures may not be on the menu anymore unfortunately but it gives you an idea of what you'll be getting'
Be the first to ReplyOverall: Outstanding dining experience - from the quality
Overall: Outstanding dining experience - from the quality and creativity of the food and cocktails to the service and ambiance. I highly recommend it!Tastiness: I booked this restaurant as a celebration dinner for a milestone birthday and all 4 of us enjoyed our meals a lot. There was appreciation for each of the 4 courses of the tasting menu and the pickiest eaters and observers of etiquette were pleased with the experience. While we enjoyed all the dishes, I recommend the roasted foie gras custard, sablefish misoyaki, rohan duck breast, and the smoked black bass, and the manjari namelaka for dessert.Presentation: Every dish's uniqueness was highlighted through presentation - some looked like art on a plate, and others maintained mystery (like the foie gras, which did not reveal its content from the beginning. It is clear that presentation is weighed as carefully as the ingredients chosen for each dish.Service: Impeccable!Ambiance: This is a pretty relaxed, yet elegant restaurant, with dimly lit rooms, and an air of calm throughout. The music complemented the dining experience.Cleanliness: Very neat and clean - with most staff wearing masks and gloves.Price: Exceptional value - the 4 course menu starts t $89 pp, wines are $15-18 by the glass, cocktails about $17.

Be the first to ReplyI have mixed feelings of Sepia.
We came in a group of 4. We would see people who come in after us with also a group of 4 and the same appointment time get seated before us. We had also saw a few customers would slip some money to the hostesses. Seeing that made our group very uncomfortable. After we had sat down, we had ordered. The food is a hit or miss. Some dishes were better than others.
Be the first to ReplyI ate here over the summer and every course was amazing!
I ate here over the summer and every course was amazing! The flavors were so good and the service was wonderful. I also loved the free snapper on crispy rice and bread from the chef at the start. My only complaint is I asked for my steak medium but one one piece was medium and one was well done. I wasn't hungry enough at that point to eat the whole thing other wise I probably would have tried to send it back. I probably should have just gotten it medium rare. Other than that it was such an amazing dinner and so many dishes surprised me such as the salad. I cannot wait to see what I get next time! It's also such a great price for a Michelin starred restaurant in Chicago.
