A hidden gem in the Dolomites
We are a young family (children aged 6 and 8 years) that love skiing. It was our first time in the Dolomites and we were lucky to have received this fantastic hotel recommendation from a friend. For the quality of the service, the room and the food quality I think it is a very good deal. Our trip was during the UK school half term and we stayed in Hotel Gran Ander for a whole week. I will describe our experience which I hope may be useful. -The trip from London to Badia was quite easy. The flight takes 2h from London and the drive took us 2.5h due to some traffic. -We arrived on time to rent our skis. We used Ski Top which is very close to the hotel and they have good quality equipment. I have read that they can take the skis to be fitted by the guests in the hotel, but we didnt use this service. -If you pre-book your ski tickets, you have the option to collect them at the hotel reception. You just need to give them the reference number and they print the ski past for the guests. It is easier than having to go to the ski shop and queue. -Our room in Hotel Gran Ander was very nice. We took a family suite which was quite spacious. It was nice to have one bedroom for the parents and 1 bedroom for the children. We had plenty of space to hang our clothes and all the ski gear. -The meals (breakfast and dinner) were just AMAZING. It was really delicious and everyone ate like there is no tomorrow. -The breakfast offered really top quality choices. You can use the juicer to make a fresh apple or carrot juice. If you eat oats and seeds, it is possible to grind them fresh. Everything was really top nice and well presented. We were always very energetic to start the ski day. -Dinner is served from 7:30pm and every single meal during our stay was a unique experience. The dinner starts with the salad bar. Usually I don't fancy salad and I prefer to go to the main course. But it was so beautifully presented that even my children wanted to try. They serve about 5 dishes (which is usually starter, soup, pasta, main course and dessert). It is a lot of food but I wanted to eat every single one of them because it was so delicious. It was always a nice time for the family to sit properly eat good food and talk about the day. -The hotel is not a ski-in or ski out and it is necessary to take a van to the lifts. However the whole commute to the lifts was easier than what i thought. The van has regular service and we never waited too long (no more than 10min) at the stop which is in front of the hotel. The drive itself takes a couple of minutes to the Badia slopes. -The van drops the guest in front of Badia lifts. From there you can ski in the Badia/Pedraces slopes. They are not crowded and in a good day it is fantastic place to ski. However, after one morning going up and down the same lifts we started to get a bit bored and we decided to go to the main ski area that can be accessed from La Villa. -The way from Badia to La Villa is easy and it takes maybe 15 min. You take a flat lift which links to another lift where you ski down to La villa. Looking to the map, it shows that it is necessary to take a red slope. But it is not difficult and if you have tried a red before, I would say it should be fine. -At the end of the day I always went to the jacuzzi/sauna to relax. It was very popular with other guests as well, but it was never very crowded. If I need to list any cons i would say: -The lifts needs to be accessed by van or driving your car to the slopes. For us the whole process was doable and it was not a hassle to do it every day. -Badia is not at the centre of the Sella Ronda, it take a few lifts to reach the main gondola in La Villa. Again, we are intermediate skiers and it was ok to do this commuting on a daily basis. Overall I ski at least one week every season and I have tried club med, self catered apartments, small/large hotels that are ski-in/ski-out and places that you need to drive to the ski resort. Among all the places I rate Hotel Gran Ander and potentially the best place I have stayed. It is the type of place that fells special. It is not a place where you just to go sleep. It fells like a very good memory of your trip fells precious. My only recommendation is to try it for yourself and fell what the hotel and the Dolomites has to offer.
Be the first to ReplyTHE best hotel in the world!!
There are too many amazing details about this hotel.
I will just say. This place is worth skipping Cortina, or Corvara, or Selva/ Val Gardena. Or anywhere in the world.
Come to Gran Ander!
The value of the half-board is incredible.
-best views in the Dolomites
-world class restaurant
-meet the chef and owner ever morning and evening
-great skiing/hiking location
-quieter town so that you can sleep with a window open
-amazing included hotel amenities and spaces. Massive beautiful updated windows.
-run and staffed mostly by family
Love this place. I will be forcing all my family and friends to come here.
I am 30 from Canada and skied here with my wife. I also stayed in Selva (Gardena) and Cortina; I will only come back to Gran Ander in Badia with with either of our parents and other friends next year.
You will be thrilled if you listen to this review and book right now. I am writing this on my last night from the empty relaxation room watching the sun leave the ski hill. Very sad to leave.
Cheers!
