I have been eating at this place since I was a kid, nearly 15 years. Hadn't been back in a while so I decided to treat myself to some sushi tonight. Eating out is a big deal these and spending right now is not easy. This place is a complete disappointment. The sushi literally has no flavor, is way over priced, the inside looks like its a storage unit and the chef?owner? was very unfriendly. He didnt even get up to hand me my take-out; just pointed to the bag on the counter. I will absolutely not be coming back here and am sad that my once in a blue moon eating out treat for myself was a total waste of money and I now need to eat cereal in addition to the sushi. Even the wasabi has ZERO flavor! How is that even possible? They didnt give me nearly enough soy sauce for this flavorless mess of an overprice dinner. YIKES!!

I've been going here for over 15 years, but since they've changed ownership, the place has totally changed. what disturbed me the most were the clear health code violations. the owner/only person working was using his bare hands to make sushi. when i approached to order, he continued to use his bare hands to write up my order and check me out. he touched my money with his bare hands, and then went back to touching the fish without washing his hands!! he also had a half-falling off bandaid that was covered in fish. it was clear he had an open wound under it, but still wasn't wearing gloves while handling RAW FISH and rolling the sushi!! it was disgusting and made me feel sick. the prices have also skyrocketed and the menu has changed completely. this place used to be charming, now i anticipate it will be shut down by the health department any day now.
Be the first to ReplyThis was our first time trying Sushi Sho.
Our favorite Santa Monica sushi restaurant has closed and we have been trying many places to find a new sushi "home" to no avail. Sushi Sho is definitely not that place. The fish was bland and not tasty. The sushi was not cold. The rice fell apart and so it was a mess to eat. Some rolls we ordered were not in the boxes and there were other rolls that we had no idea what they were and did not order that were there. Something with crab roll we did not order and some kind of mashed pinkish purple stuffed roll that we couldn't identify and had almost no taste. We ordered spicy salmon and got plain salmon. There were 4 sauces but we really had no idea which sauce the chef wanted us to put on what items? It would have been better if he labeled them or mixed them into the rolls as they should be. We asked for extra ginger and wasabi and did not receive. All in all supermarket sushi is better and comes packaged much prettier. This was all just thrown in boxes. Oh and yes as all are mentioning on this thread, the prices were higher than advertised and posted for sure. Next...

This is so disappointing We have been coming to that place for at least 15 yearsThey apparently changed ownership The new owner is extremely dishonest Our bill was 47$ thé sushi was disgusting we asked to eat in on the terrace and he brought us the sushi in boxes We did not even have plates fir the soy sauce We also waited for over 40 min fir our food The day my husband looked at his bank statement he was charged 68$ so that guy overcharged $21 ! We called him and he told my husband to call his investors and he hang up on himThen we drove there he again said it was not sushi sho and then he called the cops on us !!!! Do not go there He also does not wear a mask !

Oh what a shock to do my usual phone order and then walk in to the confusing new arrangement that had been our beloved Sushi Sho, now called Candy Fish. Crushed. First, the sushi chef was not wearing a mask! I asked him to put it on. Then he rang up my order for $119 and had to void it - wrong order. Then he hadn't even started my order altho on the phone he said ready in 10 minutes. I didn't come early. Then I realize he is the only worker in the shop! So hands all over the place, then no mask. Whaaat? The sushi was sloppy. Tasted ok, but with the sanitary issue, never again. The cost was way up, too. Then there is the crazy new decor, heavy cloth chairs and tables and the picture window obscured by a wooden barrier. This is a tiny takeout shop that pre-pandemic had appropriate little tables and metal chairs. Add all this up and it seems a very bad businessman has destroyed a long-time successful neighborhood restaurant. So sad for us neighbors. RIP Sushi Sho.

Not sure why Yelpers say it's closed but it might as well be. This pains me on many levels given what a long and reliable run Sho had before whatever is going on now. The new owner raised prices, lowered quality and seems unaware of the concept behind masks. I'd be more sympathetic to his cause if he didn't fret more about the music playing than my order. He let the prior chefs go, had no one manning the register, and now churns out overpriced sushi that was falling apart before he even put a lid on top of my order. Brothers Sushi is coming down the street, so barring a quick turnaround, our beloved neighborhood sushi spot will be out of business soon. Such a shame.
Be the first to ReplyWe had take out from the new chef and enjoyed our food .
We had a big take out order abs everything was ready on time . We especially liked the quality of the fish . Scallop, tuna , yellow tail , ikura, rolls and salads were delicious .
Be the first to ReplyI have enjoyed this place for years, simple takeout sushi.
However, recently the prices have increased and the quality has decreased. I thought the first time was mistake so I tried them again only to have the same disappointing overpriced experience. I asked for a receipt and the price was $20 more than it was 2 months ago and the guy said tip was included. I am bummed to no longer have a go to sushi place for takeout. I think they must be under new ownership.

We've been taking out from this local favorite for years now. Doesn't look like much from the outside but the sushi never disappoints! And the prices are crazy reasonable especially for its location! It's been around for 18 years and we think of it as our little gem... we always go for the spicy tuna and California rolls but everything is always fresh and simple:)

I have come here plenty of times because I work on the street and the staff have always been friendly and the prices have always been great. I guess they have started new management/ownership. So when I got the price of 2 simple cut rolls as $25 I kindly asked to get a refund as I wasn't willing to pay that much right now. I was met with the OWNER first trying to find a reason not to refund me where I calmly told him I would just dispute the charge with my bank if he didn't refund me. Then this made him mad and he told me to step back while insulting me being a customer.I tried to explain that it just wasn't within my budget today and that he should be kinder to customers and he just shut it down by over talking me with other insults.I told him I'd take a picture of him to make sure everyone knew who they were going to be met with. Please just be aware when going in of the price increase and rude customer service under new management
