very disappointed
I used to think Tadokoro was outstanding. I don't think so any more. I'm sure their sushi and sashimi are very good, but: First, they've discontinued my favorite dish, chirashi-sushi. No explanation. Second, the assorted tempura (two shrimp and several vegetables) was only average. The shrimp were good, but the vegetables were mushy. Third, even the little bowl of white rice ($4) that I ordered to accompany my tempura was mediocre. Fourth, my friend ordered his favorite, mushroom salad, and found that the variety of mushrooms is less than before, though the dressing is still delicious. In their favor, the service was good and the ambience is pleasing. Parking wasn't a problem for us, but I can see that it might be a problem when they're busy. I won't be going back to Tadokoro, sadly. Some of the Japanese restaurants in the Convoy area of San Diego are more to my taste now. (I should add that I lived in Japan for about 15 years and have eaten at some of the best restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto.)

I really enjoyed their nigiri special along with an order of toro that we split amongst ourselves when we stopped in for a late lunch recently. Next time I'll come with a bigger appetite and a slightly bigger budget as the nigiri that was being served omakase style at the bar was seriously tempting.

Despite COVID-19, Sushi Tadokoro had some covered outdoor seating which made dining acceptable despite the heat wave. We ordered the Chirashi Box and the Nigiri Set. The fish was very fresh. The tamago was flavorful and tender. The rice was sweet and flavorful. Even the ginger and seaweed appetizer were well done. Both the Chirashi and Nigiri options were extremely well prepared. I only wish they would have used fresh wasabi. Otherwise, the fish was fresh and fabulous, the service was fabulous and they are taking all the precautions during challenging times. Bathrooms were immaculate. They even had special air filters set up. We highly recommend Sushi Tadokoro.
Be the first to ReplyOk Sushi, understaffed and bad parking!
We visited there as soon as the restaurant was open. Literally there are 6-7 spots in the parking lot ( so small.) There was only one lady who serves and sits customers. She was constantly busy serving dishes. It took her forever to get the food and pay for the food. I was on the way to the airport and had 2 hours for early dinner and I barely made it. We only ordered 15 pieces of sushi and no alcohol or appetizer.
The quality of sushi was avarage, not impressive. I expected more since I read good reviews from this app. I tried very good sushi before so maybe I have higher expectation.
I would not visit there again bc of understaffed environment, small parking and average sushi with high price point.
Sushi Tadokoro Nigiri #Lifegoals
Massive thanks to the Team at Sushi Tadokoro, who earned some serious respect today...
Every aspect of our experience was perfect.
On a whim we decided to roll over to Old Town for lunch and preview the Menu for
Dinner at a later date.
From the moment we arrived, service was welcoming and friendly. The Menu was more
extensive than anticipated, and it was actually quite difficult to decide on a direction.
Sushi, sashimi, and cooked food options were all outstanding.
We chose several items from the daily chalkboard sushi specials as well as a few from the kitchen to start.
Giant Oysters, Kawahagi, Sanma, Aji, Saba, Snapper, Cured Halibut, Zuke, Agedashi dōfu, Karaage, Mushroom Salad and an incredible little scoop of black sesame Ice Cream to finish an incredibly perfect meal. Every bite was divine and the Nigiri was truly spectacular.
OMG sushi, nagiri,sashimi dream
Our daughter a resident of San Diego took us to this restaurant for dinner! It is a modest environment that serves phenomenal fish! We have sushi in nyc and this was superb . The Spanish mackerel was delicious and when the returned with the skin and bones fried to a crisp to eat it was wonderful . The Toro and both UNI were special ! Everything served was top shelf! The staff was warm, friendly and helpful!
We will be back!
Feels Like Tokyo
Subdued lighting and a sophisticated vibe in this small sushi bar in Old Town. The sushi chefs, who are from Japan, are talented and very informative. The selection of Sushi is exceptional. We started with a "Sashimi Omikaze" that featured exceptional toro and live shrimp whose antennae continued to wave at us as we devoured their back halves. Every fish was exceptional including the kampachi and the tuna. There were several unusual varieties such as seared (with a blow torch) golden eye snapper and trigger fish served with its liver. If you love brilliant sushi and have the $$$$ to support your habit, this is one of the best in San Diego.

Been here about 4-5 x, always super fresh and authentic japanese experience. Good service each visit. Ordered hamachi, scallop, ami ebi, red snapper and a couple of cut rolls. All the fish was delicious and presented beautifully. My favorite item on the menu is the fabulous mushroom salad. Top of the line sushi, will be returning as often as possible!

After seeing this place on various lists, I was excited to visit during my recent Seattle trip; unfortunately this place was a disappointment.
Given the reviews and location in a shopping center, I was expecting an authentic hole in the wall that blew me away, however this was anything but. Pricing was on the higher end and honestly not worth it given the quality, service and setting.
I went for the moriawase and the fish was rather flavorless. The only redeeming items were the various pieces of nigiri that i endlessly ordered(and racked up my bill) to feel satisfied. Some were great pieces that i haven’t found elsewhere. Maybe they use worse fish for the set menu items than they do for the individually sold pieces.
Unbelievable Fresh delicious sushi
I have finally found an excellent sushi place, the quality and freshness is impeccable, it's a bit pricey but it's expected from a place that brings fresh fish in daily from Japan or other parts of the world, the sushi chefs are very nice and friendly- they are very talkative and explain where the fish came from.....
Be the first to ReplyRecommended by friends and wish we had gone before! Wonderful.
Friends told us it was a nice restaurant and said we should try it. Tepid review, but they don’t love Japanese food as we do. Not many locals we spoke to had heard of it, and we are now surprised about that. It is in a small strip mall, but still inviting. The menu was very interesting and there are lots of specials – I would recommend all of them! There is a nice sake list, too. The service is friendly and efficient. It’s rather small, so reservations are necessary for the most part. It fills up quickly. The décor is nice. It would be good if they would drop some noren around, since when full it is suddenly very noisy. The only other negative was a strong odor of cleaning solution when we walked in. The food was delicious – all of it. The sashimi and sushi were the stars though. The nigiri was the perfect size, but I was disappointed some of the rice balls fell apart. It’s not often I could say something like, “Those were the most delicious and perfectly cooked shrimp heads (actually thorax) I have ever had.”

I lived in Japan before Japanese restaurants, and sushi in particular, got so popular in San Diego. In Tokyo and Kyoto I learned what the best Japanese food looks and tastes like, as friends took me to what must be some of the most wonderful (and expensive) restaurants in the world. As a result, Japanese restaurants in the USA almost always disappoint me. Todokoro is an exception: the food and service are exceptional; the decor is relaxingly authentic. My companion said that his tempura was the best he'd ever tasted. My chirashi (generous slices of raw fish on a bowl of seasoned rice) couldn't have been better. One of these days I want to try their omakase ("leave it up to the chef"). If you appreciate the real thing, you'll appreciate Tadokoro.
