Great Sushi, Stupid Expensive
I lived in California for 39 years, and spent a lot of time in Japan, so we know sushi. this place has great sushi, first rate, but the prices are stupid expensive. Maybe thats the way it is in New York, but i have been to equal quality for a lot less money elsewhere.

The salmon with tomato is always incredible. They also do a great fatty tuna and uni. This time they added a caviar roll which was a nice touch.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Sushi, Tight Space
The sushi here never disappoints but I prefer their upper west side location because the space is better there. Here, is very, very tight. The bar is better but still somewhat tight. I would avoid going to the bathroom because itโs literally behind a table, very tight space.
As much as I like the sushi here, I donโt like tight, small, bright places so canโt go back. But if youโre not too big on ambiance, itโs worth a try.
Price is also good. You get best sushi at the best price here.
great omakase
the space is not great but the Lunch Omakase was excellent by any standard and great value also. service was pleasant

Iโve been a Gari fan for decades, ever since he was a sous chef in a small Japanese restaurant in the shadow of the World Trade Center. Now decades later, and with multiple restaurants around NYC, I have to say that is still a culinary experience that is unparalleled. Sure, sushi โpuristsโ may look down their noses at his amazingly creative and tasty inventions, but you cannot question either the freshness or the amazing experience one senses in your mouth upon popping each piece in your mouth. Yes, you have to bite the bullet and go with the omakase menu, and at the sushi bar, in order to say youโve really done it right! Gari May be in semi-retirement, with occasional cameo appearances, but his legacy carries on with an amazing team of chefs. Canโt wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyOmakase was superb!
The food was super tasty. Every dish was spectacular in flavor and complemented well with each other. One thing was better than the next. It was pricy though at $150 per person. If we had just ordered dishes from the menu it was have been a better value, but from other friends sitting on the table, it wasn't as good as the Omakase.
Be the first to ReplyOmakase is Oh So Delicious!
I've taken clients to Sushi of Gari twice in the past month and it's been heaven both times! Their sake menu is extremely robust. I highly recommend the Denemon and the creamy Ippido - both are dangerously delicious! They also have a very nice wine list if sake isn't for you!
For dinner, we tried omakase style which is the chef's choice. You can order sashimi only or sushi only or a combo. From there, you tell them how many pieces you want (typically 12 per person) and if you have any allergies and then...you just enjoy! The fatty tuna literally melts in your mouth and the baby hamachi pairs perfectly with the tomatillos they put on top. The salmon topped with warm tomatoes is also amazing! The key is to trust what they prepare for you and you won't be disappointed!
The 4 rating vs the 5 rating is for a weird-ish smell in the entry, though this is completely separate from the kitchen and eating areas and unfortunately, isn't uncommon in NY. Do not be put off by this! Worst case, try the other NYC locations :)
Delicious, small but fast service
Wonderful sushi and definitely a small, tight space but we grabbed lunch here before walking to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Delicious!!
