Tenryuji Temple Shigetsu 京都市 Reviews from The Last Year
A wonderful space and luxurious vegetarian cuisine
I made a reservation and visited this restaurant during my trip to Kyoto. This is a shojin ryori restaurant located in the Tenryu-ji Temple Garden in Arashiyama, and is directly managed by the Tenryu-ji Temple's shojin ryori department. It has a very good reputation and the food is delicious, so I definitely wanted to visit. I later found out that it was listed as a Bib Gourmand in the 2023 Kyoto-Osaka Michelin Guide. When I think of shojin ryori at a temple, I imagine eating healthy food in a slightly formal room, but that's not the case at all. A beautiful Japanese-style building, a very open and spacious space, and healthy dishes that are luxurious and vibrant. The food and space are very satisfying. There are also many foreign tourists. There were foreigners before us, and all of them had smiles on their faces when they saw and ate the food. The dishes include a 9,000 yen course with one soup and seven dishes, a 6,500 yen course with one soup and six dishes, and a 3,800 yen course with one soup and five dishes. I had the 3,800 yen course. The volume was more than enough to satisfy me. I was able to order alcohol, so I enjoyed a beer. There is a separate admission fee to enter the Tenryu-ji Garden, but this is a shop that I would highly recommend.
Japanese Vegetarian cuisine at a temple
Zen vegetarian cuisine at Shigetsu, Shojin ryori.Japanese food culture experience! Made from vegetable, soybeans and seaweed. Booking Need! The restaurant surrounded by the natural beauty of Tenryu-ji World Heritage Garden. 篩月で精進料理! 天龍寺直営のお店です。 野菜のみとは思えない満足感! ごま豆腐や煮物など丁寧に作られたお食事に感動しました。 平日でも予約お勧めします。
Fantastic gastronomic experience
It was a fantastic gastronomic experience to taste the vegetarian dishes of Tenryuji Temple's centuries-old Zen Buddhist cuisine. The chosen course was Hana, prepared with local seasonal products and served on traditional red lacquered wooden trays. Excellent value for money, I recommend booking reasonably in advance.
One of the things you should experience while in Jap
This was my second Zen Buddhist veggie meal experience (The first one during a temple stay in Koyasan). The set up is large scale, not intimate. Exquisite food, immaculate service. The 3300 set lunch incl tea was just perfect for us. Walnuts, sesame tofu and pumpkin soup among my favourites.
Memorable experience
We pre-booked the Hana course which included a private room. After entering without shoes we were seated on the floor at our individual tables and the servers brought the courses. Although each of the 15 or so individual dishes was quite small, there was so much food I was the most full I’ve been in a long time. We were not told what all of the dishes were so I would only recommend this to open-minded eaters. Fussy eaters probably won’t enjoy the mystery! Although it may seem expensive compared to other meals in Japan (around £90 total for the two of us), it was such a special experience which we’ll remember forever.
Most memorable dining experience in Kyoto
The most memorable dining experience of our time in Japan. Bask in the amazing views of the mountains around Arashimaya and take in the beauty of the gardens of Tenryu-ji temple while enjoying a healthy, well-balanced meal. We had originally reserved for 3 couples but 1 couple could not make it, and the staff was understanding of the last minute change. We enjoyed the Hana (Flower) course and had the privacy of a personal dining room. Each piece of the meal was thoughtfully crafted and we felt the love that went into the meal. The ingredients tasted fresh as if just plucked from a garden for the meal. The soups were heartwarming and all the flavors worked in perfect harmony. Toward the end of our meal, our server asked us when we would like to receive the matcha so that we can enjoy it fresh and warm. The matcha was oh-so delicious, warm and frothy! We also were not rushed to finish our meal, so we took some time to meditate and reflect on our experience with the stunning views from the private dining room. I highly recommend this vegan-friendly temple meal if you are planning to visit Kyoto! Definitely take some time to explore the gardens after the meal as well, the temple is gorgeous.

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
