Excellent, as always
Another excellent visit to the team at the Black Bear, stunning setting, all the charm of a great local pub and the finesse of fine dining restaurant without the fuss, brilliant cooking and great seasonal ingredients. I could eat oysters forever and the Scallop dish with bone marrow butter is a winner. I'm glad I don't live in the village as I'd probably never leave, bravo and keep up the good work in these tough times!

Was expecting a great meal having read recent reviews. Overall we had a good meal but having ordered the scallop โspecialโ starter it was poor. At ยฃ11 I would have expected a decent sized scallop but Iโm afraid it was small and overcooked/rubbery. Rather spoiled the occasion.
Be the first to ReplyRelaxing and enjoyable meal.
We had a very enjoyable meal. The atmosphere was relaxing, the food was very, very, very good and the service was super friendly. Itโs a big 80th birthday soon for a member of the family and weโve decided weโll be booking them a meal here. In summary, we really enjoyed our meal and we will definitely be going back.

Have been meaning to eat here for ages. Was not disappointed. The Black Bear fully deserves its reputation for the finest of food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. This is how it's done. Attention to detail in the way the food is prepared, complementary tastes and all so unfussy. Brilliant

Probably one of the finest meals Iโve ever had. Iโd heard that this pub had an excellent reputation however Iโve heard that before! This time absolutely justified, everything was brilliantly done, great staff, great food and good drink. Well done all involved

Fairy tale pub deep in the countryside with innovative cuisine making great use of excellent local produce, interesting wines, and a warm welcome from attentive staff. For cooking of this quality pricing is very fair. It most certainly is worth the extensive detour.

Well what can I say, can't speak highly enough about this wonderful restaurant. Been meaning to go for a long time and did not disappoint in any way. Food absolutely delicious from the snacks, starter, main courses and desserts. Quality superb. Service could not fault in any way, a pure gem of a place. Will be back very soon.

First time visiting The Black Bear, well what can I say ? Perfect from start to finish! Excellent food, starters mains & deserts. We had our 5 year old granddaughter with us and Joshua the owner and chef provided us with a dish that she enjoyed, but I must say we have eaten in a few Michelin star restaurants and they don't seem to cater to the younger generation... so hats off the the chef. Also, the waiting staff were most accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Would we eat here again? Most definitely, would we recommend? Most definitely. Can't wait to return. Oh and by the way with regards to a previous reviewer who complained about the price of the Welsh rarebit, I think they called it cheese on toast. It is not cheese on toast! It is a rarebit which includes a few more ingredients than cheese and bread and takes time and skill to produce. In my opinion well worth the cost as was everything that we ordered.

I recently posted a poor review of what I thought was this place.. when it should have been for a similar named establishment.. I can only apologise to the owner, and anyone who read the review.. This place โBlack bear innโ usk is truly amazing. Just returned from having lunch, the best quality and cooking Iโve had in a very, very long time.. cannot recommend enough..

We're visiting some Welsh Gastropubs and we had a fantastic meal here. Really great selection of snacks, delicious oysters and croquettes and a beautiful seafood main course. Really interesting wine list and fab, friendly service.
Be the first to ReplyGREAT Food
Weโve lived in Monmouthshire for over 6 years, so it was GREAT to at last have a local pub with good food. We visited Friday lunchtime on 1st April, and we werenโt disappointed with a main course of freshly cooked fish for me and vegetarian fritters for my husband. Homemade caramel apple ice cream and a milk pudding were equally as good. Weโll returnโฆ
Dogs are allowed in the eating areas, so if like me youโre not keen on swishing tails and dogs spread-eagled across the floor that is a negative.
Fantastic food and great atmophere.
Ate here Saturday evening on first day of holiday at Alice Springs. We arrived a little early but made to feel very welcome. I had the chicken starter and the confit pork main. Food was excellent, best meal out for a long time. Front of house was run by a guy and a young lady and both were brilliant, knowledgeable and attentive. They were handling about 30 covers and the bar but did it with ease and service was never wanting. The prices were also very reasonable for food of this quality, we woud pay about 35% more back in Essex. We hope to go back one more time before we leave.

Great good, staff and atmosphere
Great food, staff and atmosphere. Rhubarb pavlova was exceptional - and I donโt normally eat dessert, although all the food was excellent. Well behaved dogs welcomed as well!! We will be back

We always enjoy the warm welcome from the maitre dโ and were soon on our way with some fizz and a pint of Butty Bach. The starter of scallops was fresh and succulent and the main course venison was sumptuous along with the signature confit potato which never disappoints. Home made ice cream was a delicious conclusion and as usual the house wines were the perfect pairing
Be the first to ReplyExquisite food, friendly welcome. Reputation is well deserved!
I booked a table here as a treat for my husband and 17 year old daughter, we visited on a Sunday lunchtime.
We received a wonderfully friendly welcome from Joe, and were shown to our table where a jug of water was immediately provided - a really appreciated touch. The menu, whilst small, was extremely well considered and beautifully designed. The drinks menu immediately highlighted some favourites, a stunning Rhubarb Gimlet was a welcome treat, and a good selection of wines by the glass was appreciated as I was the only 'drinker' in the party - I wasn't consigned to mediocre 'house' wine as so often happens!
I chose the stunning Wild Garlic soup to start - it was truly one of the best things I've eaten! My husband and daughter chose the buttermilk fried chicken which was demolished with relish! The venison main was divine - the confit potato was a real treat and the beetroot ketchup. . . WOW!
Desserts - I've rarely seen my husband demolish ice cream with such gusto - he adored the rhubarb. The Apple and Caramel Sponge was a hit with my daughter, and I made a pig of myself with the cheeseboard - helped by my husband of course! The home made crackers were particularly delicious.
Little touches made this meal so very special. The home made sourdough with room temperature butter. The cheese being served at room temperature allowing the flavour to properly develop and be appreciated. The confit potatoes being made with paper thin slices of potato, full of flavour, and gently fried to perfection. The poshest chip ever!
Overall, this was a huge treat. We loved the style of food - great ingredients allowed to shine, brilliantly designed dishes cooked with real skill, but no pretentiousness. The absence of micro herbs and edible flowers was noted and appreciated! This was our first visit, but won't be our last.

Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. The passion for the good really shines through. A very special place. Small, so make sure you book ahead.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, lovely atmosphere
Enjoyed a really well cooked meal here recently. Attentive staff and good range of drinks too. Very good restaurant in a lovely part of the world.
Be the first to ReplyVery good food in a welcoming pub
Very good food in a comfortable, welcoming pub. The choice of starters and mains is limited to three of each plus an interesting choice of snacks which could be eaten as tapas or a selection used for a starter.
We had pork belly and branade for starters and duck and cheese dumplings for mains, with a side of greens. All were very well cooked and presented. The range of puddings were good.
The restaurant and bar were very busy, with locals and visitors - all customers were greeted warmly and service was first rate. There were a few well behaved dogs with their owners, There were no free tables, so booking is recommended - online booking system is very straight forward. We will happily return to the Black Bear
Our 4th visit
Our previous visits have been as a couple and with friends. The food and ambiance have been most enjoyable and warranted the price.
However the food on this last visit let us down with a bang.
The hake on the main course was mushy and tasteless, which I assumed was due to overcooking, but when it was kindly replaced with another piece, also mushy, I realised that the hake was at fault and just ate it.
My husband chomped his way through the toughest slices of lamb that he had ever encountered. He didnโt like to complain, as I already had, but did mention it at the end.
At all times the service was friendly and polite.
However these two courses alone, totalled ยฃ42. and we were left with the feeling that the restaurant didnโt accept our findings.
