Went to the Dawson for brunch and it was pretty decent, but probably not special enough for us to return. I got two drinks - something about Not a French Martini which was so sweet that it tasted like the kind of syrup you'd add to liquor and a mixer to make a good cocktail. The Tipperary Blond tasted kind of like lemon cleaner? Not in a bad way, weirdly, just kind of astringent. My biggest knock on this place was the breakfast poutine. It's set in front of me and there are no cheese curds on it. I asked our waitress if there was any cheese in it and she looked at me like I was crazy. I then ordered a cheese curds appetizer to accompany the poutine. They were fried so not ideal. Who has ever heard of a poutine without cheese curds!?! Our server (I think her name was Taylor) was lovely. Points for her.

The Dawson sits at the corner of Halsted and Grand with large signs on both sides, making it easy to spot. The doors are large but easy for an able bodied person to open. Immediately upon entering one is awed by the openness of the entryway. Situated within a stairwell, the ceiling is several stories high, gilded by glass, adorned by soft, elegant chandeliers. The interior is just as lovely, with real candles at each table - tall candles , not tea lights. The bathroom was beautiful with a lovely scent from a lit candle as well as the scented soap. Despite the gorgeous decor, our server, Risa, was completely down to earth and extremely helpful. She came as soon as I'd been seated but acknowledged that I might not be ready yet, just letting us know she was there. I asked for a description of one of the beers and she was able to accurately explain various components of it. Although there was a karafe of water on the table, almost every time we took a few sips, the busser refilled our glasses from the karafe, unobtrusively. I was worried that rigatoni would be too spicy but Risa was able to assure me that she could remove the spicy breadcrumbs and the chili flakes. I asked her how large the dessert was and if were very sweet. Again, Risa was able to perfectly describe it. I was impressed that there was a vegan item on the menu! Unfortunately, it wasn't something I can eat so I ordered the rigatoni and by asking for it not spicy, it was delightful. Much larger portion than I expected so I had enough left over for a lunch. My friend got the burger cooked medium and thought it was underdone but wasn't sure if that was just him. We both thought the fries were perfect. Crispy on the outside and somehow perfectly fluffy and soft on the inside. Salted but not overly so. But the real winner was the dessert. I don't have too much of a sweet tooth but love passion fruit so I had to try the creamsicle. The cake was citrusy, moist, with a texture I've only had with homemade baked goods - something I could sink my teeth into with experience more than just saccharine fluff. Not terribly sweet. The ganache was sweet but this was perfectly balanced with lemon. The fresh orange segments provided a juicy burst of flavor while the passion fruit sorbet kicked it over the top for me. It also had thin, crunchy wafers which contrasted nicely with the texture of the sponge cake and the sorbet. I'd go back just for dessert and since I don't have a huge sweet tooth, that's saying a lot!
Be the first to ReplyTop 10 service of any restaurant I've ever been to.
Our server made an effort to get to know us and our taste to make smart suggestions based on her expert knowledge of the menu. We ended up getting the oysters, scrumptious Monkey Bread, Chicken Fried Lobster, Ricotta Pancakes, and Shrimp & Grits. My husband ordered the Bloody Mary, which they tweaked to his specification. He's very picky and this was one of the best! I am not a fan of tomato juice, but I must say it was very good. My ranking of the dishes would be 1. Ricotta Pancakes 2. Shrimp & Grits 3. Monkey Bread 4. Oysters 5. Chicken Fried Lobster. All of the dishes were outstanding! The nuance of flavor in each dish was spot on. Everything was perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. We visited many wonderful restaurants during our trip to Chicago, but The Dawson left the longest lasting positive impression. Next time we're in Chicago, we'll definitely be back to The Dawson for both brunch and dinner!
Be the first to ReplySuch an inventive menu!!! We loved the sriracha butter
Such an inventive menu!!! We loved the sriracha butter chicken - really unique and flavorful. And can't go wrong with a burger that has bacon jam, also divine. We didn't love many of the seasonal cocktails we tried unfortunately but my mezcal cocktail was delicious. Service was pretty quick and the ambiance was so stunning. This place is big and beautifully decorated!! Highly recommend :)
Be the first to ReplyI absolutely could not believe how bad our NYE was at this
I absolutely could not believe how bad our NYE was at this restaurant. This place had high expectations for. First the appetizers ran out and we had one option out of three which was oysters. Many of my party were looking g forward to a different option. Then the service was very slow in general even though it was a prefixed menu. The best part of the "ticket" we purchased was the dj NYE party upstairs. Not only was the music horrible but the DJ DID NOT DO A COUNTDOWN OR PAUSE THE MUSIC for a literal nye party. I couldn't believe that people at the bar had to yell the countdown and he didn't stop the music, do a count down or anything. He literally missed the entire point of the New Year's Eve party that was the countdown to the new year. Please do not waste your time booking nye here or any event. They clearly cannot handle it and do not have the capacity to plan it regardless of event price.

Came here for the Christmas pop up Mistletoe & Mischief to have some holiday drinks and bites. I tried the Mezcal coquito. It's a small drink but strong and flavorful. My friends got the Deck the Highball and liked that too. For food I got the tuna ceviche. It was good but I think they need to cut the tuna into smaller bites so it soaks in more of the flavors. There were a lot of flavors and it's refreshing but I've had better ceviche. The waiter had recommended the coconut curry so I got that too. I'm glad I got it because it was full of flavor. I like that they put the golden raisins on top of the rice and not inside the curry, because I'm not a fan of raisins. The coconut curry has some spice to it which I love. It was not heavy on the cream which I like, so you still get the spicy flavors. Overall the experience was great and the decor made it a fun holiday experience. I will be back to try some of the other food because it was so hard to choose amongst all the flavorful items. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. He kept refilling eaters for us and asking about drinks or anything else needed. The manger came out to thank people for stopping by and we didn't feel rushed at all like some of the holiday pop ups do to just push people in and out within 60-90 min. So it was a great girls night to catch up when home for the holidays and enjoy some delicious food.
Be the first to ReplyVery fun restaurant during the holiday time.
Love all the Christmas lights and decor and the fun menu. I got a drink called Deck the Highball which was good. The service was great and so friendly. Rigatoni was good the noodles were a little hard but the star of the show were the crispy fries. They were incredible and so delicious. They came out hot and crispy.

I mean the reviews speak for itself - this place delivers on what seems simple and makes it modern and a blast of flavor. The oysters were some of my favorite I've ever had. Well charred. Full of flavor. The only dish that was okay was the sausage with chips and chorizo. The spice was a bit overpowering on the dish.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic spot for a date night or even a larger party.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. We chose to split the fish tacos and they were delicious and great to split with another person. The Brussels sprouts and cheese curds also very good. We ordered a bottle of wine and my girlfriend accidentally knocked over a glass and shattered. They replaced the glass of wine without even saying anything. Very kind and highly recommend they have something for everyone.
Be the first to ReplyMy 2 stars is for how amazingly flavorful the cauliflower
My 2 stars is for how amazingly flavorful the cauliflower curry was. It's priced at $24 which is a bit pricey for vegetarian entree and for its quantity. Curries like that can't be eaten alone so basmati rice pairing was perfect balance but the super small tiny bowl of basmati rice for the amount of curry isn't gonna be enough at all. Also the presentation of the dish when served is so not practical. They serve this dish in 2 bowls - one medium sized bowl filled to the brim with the curry and another tiny bowl filled to the top with rice. There's no way you can eat this dish without having a main course plate being given along with it which you have to ask for. I hope restaurant will read this review and make some changes to how they present this amazing dish with a plate and improve the quantity of the rice. Otherwise it's a great dish.. I also ordered crushed velvet drink and this is a major rip off. 90% of the drink was all ice with literally only few sips of alcoholic drink and just plain ice priced at $18. This drink isn't worth a happy hour price let alone paying full price. I would say avoid it completely. Also we went as a party of 8 and our waitress from the very get go seemed to be way too stressed out and nervous since bringing us water. We still tipped her well but she could do better

A great place for food! We almost ordered everything off the menu! Must try the Waygu Steak, grilled octopus and Tortellini!!

Came here on a Friday night for a GNO and everybody loved it!! Maybe it's bc we got pretty lit off of 2 pitchers of sangrias. :)We ordered a lot. Like, a lot. The sticky duck wings were my favorite. I'd come back here just for them! The chicken fried lobster was okay but nothing to write home about. My lamb shank entree rocked my socks off, no joke. The squash polenta was even tasty and I don't even like polenta usually! The charred cauliflower was very lovely, and perfect for sharing. Carrots were a hit but I thought they were a touch undercooked. Also, don't snooze on the chicken Milanese bc it's juicy AF! I usually don't eat chicken breast if given a choice bc it's dry and lean (give me the fats!!) but this chicken was tender and juicy! Definitely a great value meal! For dessert we had a chocolate cake, a kuchen, and a ginger tart of some sort...? (Sorry, by the time dessert came, I was not the most sober.) The kuchen was so simple yet buttery and delightful! We all loved it the best. The other two weren't bad, just not at the kuchen level. The ambience and decor here is beautiful too! It was pretty loud upstairs on a Friday but I can see this place being good for date night.
Be the first to ReplyA great brunch spot.
We sampled a bunch of different items. The chicken fried lobster was delicious, but we wish there had been more lobster. There were 5 of us, but only enough lobster for 2. The zucchini bread was sweet and moist. I had the chicken and waffles with some country gravy, and it was phenomenal. The pancakes were light and fluffy. My husband got the shrimp and grits and he loved it as well.

This is a contemporary American spot with some excellent food. The menu varies by season but I have been several times over the last three years and every time was satisfied. The most memorable dishes were the fish tacos (good for sharing, fresh and delicious) and the pork chop. Depending on when you try to go you may not be able to just walk in and be seated. There are several different spaces indoor and outdoor and can be reserved for events as well. The last time I was there it was so busy the bartender got pulled to also be our server, which was a little difficult because he would be occupied making drinks for long stretches but this was probably a one-off. The only reason it is not a 5 for me is that I am not that excited by the drink options. Despite this, I have returned several times so don't let that stop you! Overall, good spot for a date or a group, also able to do events. The food is very tasty but the drinks were not particularly memorable to me.

Was excited to come here based on the photos and reviews but left disappointed by the cocktails, food, service and interior. The outside looks like it would be enjoyable for a drink on a summer day/night but have not tried it. Beyond that I would not come back.
Be the first to ReplyEverything I ordered was ridiculously good.
The burger, the chorizo and chips, the roasted carrots. It's all so great! So unassuming and the service was on point. The ambiance is simple and relaxing. Go here. High quality and friendly people.

Recently went to The Dawson for drinks and apps before a wedding; the service was FANTASTIC and the food and drinks were outstanding. We were lucky enough to sit outside and the ambiance was perfect for a cool summer night.
Be the first to ReplyThe Dawson was good but not GREAT.
It's very loud, which is fine, but you wouldn't really know that upon entering. The food was good, but not memorable. The service was extremely slow, but she was really nice and attentive when she did show up.
