The Gage Chicago Reviews

Although not frequent, the Gage has become part of my friend group's Lolla tradition. We had dinner here 5 years ago and loved the outside dining along with super professional waitstaff and excellent food. The mussels and sprouts to start and I usually get something from the daily specials or the fish and chips. Great spot for people watching and enjoying the evening after or during the concerts! Looking forward to returning for many years to come.
Lots of choice in the menu.
It all looks delicious. The venison burger sure is! But if anything gets my top score that would be the fried pickles, what a yummy starter!!! Friendly service and good location/terrace.
Fabulous service.
Good food. Had the burger. They go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful dining experience. Highly recommended.
Today was a delightful day at the Gage brunch! The brunch
Today was a delightful day at the Gage brunch! The brunch hours are from 10 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, and I couldn't resist trying their famous lemon ricotta pancakes with a side of sausage. The lemon ricotta pancakes were divine, with a subtle lemon flavor that perfectly complemented the fruity toppings and syrup. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, where I plan to try the stuffed French toast stack! The service and servers were excellent, and the ambiance was fantastic.
Food was delicious nice authentic crispy and tasty service
Food was delicious nice authentic crispy and tasty service was excellent as well as the ambience sitting on Michigan Avenue while eating fish and chips. Having a cocktail was just fabulous.
Incredible food, vibes, and drinks! I stopped by for lunch
Incredible food, vibes, and drinks! I stopped by for lunch and got the Caesar salad and added salmon. They homemake their Caesar dressing and for someone who prefers lighter dressing, theirs was pleasantly light but flavorful! The salmon was cooked perfectly, with a nice juicy inside and slightly crispy outside. The rest of my table got the burger, the bourbon grapefruit, and the wedge salad with pork belly. Everything was phenomenal and packed with great flavor. Would definitely recommend this place, it won't disappoint!
I met friends here for a late Friday afternoon lunch.
It has a mile long bar that serves outstanding cocktails! Five stars to the bar. I had the Salt and Pepper Gibson flavored with caper juice... but it didn't look dirty. Served from a small carafe and poured into a small stemmed cocktail glass and it's all presented on a tray garnished with a large caper berry and an olive. Smoky with a hint of black pepper it was a hit. The appetizers we tried were Poutine which was delicious but very rich and heavy. We tried the fried pickles that I loved but not so much anyone else at the table. The Wedge salad with extra pork belly was fresh and had a creamy dressing. There were Brussels Sprouts that for once weren't charred to a crisp but well cooked, tender and well seasoned. I ordered the lobster roll and split it with a friend who split her burger with me. Despite the gaff on one of our entrees I forgive them. One of our diners ordered the catch of the day which was branzino. They brought her a very well prepared piece of salmon with no explanation. Until our friend inquired why, she'd have paid $42 for a salmon filet? They were out of or didn't get their branzino delivery. I was going to remove a star from my review but they removed the entire entree from her bill which was the appropriate thing to do and I can't figure a way to give them 3 1/2 stars! The lobster roll was okay, but the burger was better as burgers go. The ambience is great, across the street from the park. Service was decent but the salmon sneak made them a little suspect. I'd definitely put them in my radar and they do brunch and it's great pre-theater.
Wonderful
Great vibrant atmosphere. Delicious food. Tasty drinks. Every local and tourist alike should find the time to dine here. Treat yourself to the crème brûlée if available. Chef came by and had a drink with our party.
Great ambiance and delicious drinks! Perfect place to stop
Great ambiance and delicious drinks! Perfect place to stop if you want a good happy Hour. Service was good and efficient.
Got the caprese sandwich with a side Caesar and my dad got
Got the caprese sandwich with a side Caesar and my dad got the Caesar salad. The sandwich was amazing, the salad was a joke... and for $18??? It was whole romaine leaves barely any dressing and covered in Parmesan cheese. Don't think I'll be back because how can you mess up a Caesar salad, that's pretty basic.
Fantastic!
I took myself here for a solo dining experience sans kids & husband. I am SO glad I did. Everyone there from host to bar back to bartender to server was incredibly polite, friendly, helpful, allllll of the good adjectives. I sat at the bar and ordered the N/A-pertif spritz (perfect for the sweltering day). Fizzy, light, and lovely. I ordered the shrimp cocktail as a starter and the scallops as my main. Both were phenomenal. I wish I lived in Chicago and could eat here every day. I would try everything on the menu and I am positive it would all be delicious. I wish I had room to try one of their dessert offerings, but I did not have the time. I will definitely bring my family here on future trips to Chicago. Such happy food memories. Thank you all for the best meal Iβve ever had in Chicago! I will dream of it!
We stopped in from Canada for an afternoon drink and a bite
We stopped in from Canada for an afternoon drink and a bite to eat after touring the museum and had exceptional service. Appetizers (cauliflower, sliders, poutine) where above expected. A beautiful patio and worth the stop.
Simply, Best Ribeye Iβve Had
I feel personally obligated to write this review because of one simple reason - I had the best steak (Ribeye) I have ever had at The Gage.
Great lunch and dinner place
This is a great spot for lunch and dinner. We came here twice because we loved the salad selection. Maggie our waitress was fantastic :) The lunch menu is a better budget price for travelers.
good ambiance, good service
good food, great for sharing great corn ice cream, loved it. great salad Wedge!!! food quality was great bread is priced outside. ideal if it was included.
Delicious food, lovely ambience
What a lovely restaurant! It has a lovely vibe, comfortable seating and nice decor. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the English pea tortellini and the tomato and avocado salad. Both amazingly fresh and full of flavor. My husband enjoyed his fish and chips (note: itβs a large serve). The crΓ¨me brΓ»lΓ©e was a delicious finishing touch. An extensive drinks menu is also on offer, although I just stuck to a G&T. The staff were friendly, did their job well.
Excellent service
I love it when served a nice meal with over the top service. Our server Elijahβs attention to detail, knowledge of menu and overall professionalism was exceptional. Food was good. Cocktails excellent. Atmosphere old style with modern comfort. Best choice if you are in the area.
Relaxing Pub
This was 6 blocks from my hotel. I just wanted to relax after the hectic National Restaurant Show. They had an excellent dark beer, started off with a Pub Schotch egg and then the Venison burger Service was good
A touch of Paris in Chicago
Nice atmosphere. Beautiful setting. Great service. Brussels sprouts as a starter. Not exactly what I expected as a Belgian, but very tasty. Halibut as main course. The combination with the green vegetables and the mashed peas worked very well. I would have liked it abit more spicy, but thatβs a detail, I would definitely go back
Delicious again!!
Quick to seat us as walk ins. Nice quiet nook by the elevator. Great service. Shared fries to start with a yummy truffle sauce. Then had shrimp curry and poutine. Lots of good food! Not our first visit and we will be back!
Top Nosh at The Gage
Whilst over in Chicago on business a few new restaurants were tried The Gage being one of them. Situated in βThe Loopβ it oozes atmosphere, was nice and busy which is always a good sign. It was the 17th annual βChicago Restaurant Weekβ, a time where βprixe-fixβ, fixed price menus are available in many eateries, The Gage had one. Suffice to say, the food was excellent, some raw fish done ceviche style really got the taste buds moving, adorned with some radish, onion, spicy chilli and pomegranate it was a brilliant starter. There was a lot of choice for mains, meat, fish which is my usual goto, this time I picked the Squash Agnolotti, a good test of the kitchen getting the pasta to the perfect thickness, properly seasoned filling and enough of it to balance the casing. It was another knockout dish, siting alongside sage breadcrumbs and basil butter, truly delish. I was full at this point so the dessert was shared with colleagues, a sharp lemon and meringue creation, a great palate cleaner to finish. The Gage was great, atmosphere, service and food spot on, comes well recommended. Worth a visit if you are in town.
Very good pre show dining experience
Dined before a show at the auditorium theater. Participated in the restaurant week menu which was very good. Apple fennel salad was ok. Lamb biryani was very good. Our server was excellent. Very warm and accommodating, timing our meal perfectly for an on time departure. Her wine recommendation was also very good. Nice booth in corner and very good food and drinks made for an enjoyable evening.
Off Night
First of all, service was fantastic - this review focuses on the food. Decent cocktails (martini in a desert cup not preferable but maybe they were short on glasses), fine apps, but the Coconut Curry was thick and soupy and filet had no taste and was chewy. Kitchen had a bad night in my opinion - maybe training? Loved the Gage in past and will try again but not for a while.
Great Lunch Spot
Great spot by Millennium Park. We dined here for lunch. Went with friends. Smallish menu. Good food. BYOB. They did NOT do Restaurant Week lunch menu on weekends. Very good service.
Overpriced and underwhelmed
Cool location but like many places in Chicogo, overpriced. The place is small but nice. Staff very friendly and dressed to be expensive. So be prepared for expensive food and average quantity. Mixed drink was 2x more and half the size of anywhere else I have benn.
Fabulous location, classic decor, great menu, wonderful service!
Fabulous restaurant - great location, classic decor, great menu, and fabulous service. Even with the crowds around the holidays, we had hot food and great service! Love the seating areas with the fireplaces! Very cozy.
Disappointed
2d time here, 1st time for dinner, early reservation, 4 people. We got our appetizers (fried pickles-very good) before our drinks. Very dark booths, could not see menus or food. Chicken was dry, fried fish was excellent, fries over cooked. Ordered a $70 bottle of wine, waiter brought $120 bottle, and charged us $120, he was not very attentive overall. Disappointed!
Great for dinner or brunch.
Really nice patio along Michigan Avenue, but wait until warmer weather to try that. Also, try not to get shunted to the room in the back. Awesome bar!
Always great service, well made drinks, and pleasant
Always great service, well made drinks, and pleasant atmosphere. Both the hamburger and the venison Burger worth checking out.
The newly promoted Manager was fantastic and made everyone
The newly promoted Manager was fantastic and made everyone feel welcomed. This place is very busy often, great atmosphere. The raw oysters are the best!
Just phenomenal.
Couldn't decide on what to get so shared a few plates with friends and everything was delicious. especially the venison? burger. Service was good but a little to our liking. Really intimate table in the back right next to a fire place which was so cozy as it was quite cold outside.
Come for the drinks, stay for the foods and friends.
We highly recommend mussels vindaloo, sharing a ceasar salad with white anchovy and shaved grana padano cheese and selecting an entrΓ©e of choice. Excellent wine list. Beautiful event space and lovely staff all in the convenient location of Michigan Avenue. (Millennium Park).
A pleasant surpise
The food was excellent. There was a special Irish fare on the menu for St Patrick's weekend. I had shoulder of lamb on creamy mash potatoes and my wife had Shepards pie. Both dishes were tasty and well presented. Service was also ace.
Bartenders are amazing!!!! Food delicious! I had a love
Bartenders are amazing!!!! Food delicious! I had a love affair with the lamb. Great place to go after a museum.
Great food and ambience.
.I really enjoyed the service and also the dessert. Will try again when in the city.
I have been to The Gage many times.
It has been good but the last time was not good. Perhaps it was just our server who might have been having a bad day or has some issues with diversity. The food was ok
Food here is absolutely delicious.
They do salads, soups, mussels, and burgers really well, among the many other dishes offered. I love the comfortable and cozy booths and clubby decor. Very elegant and down to earth. Great drinks as well.
Food and drinks were not memorable.
I had their Thai curry and honestly, it was underwhelming. I'd recommend this place for the convenience of being right in front of cloud gate but I feel there are better food options elsewhere.
Delicious Thai curry w shrimp on the side.
Nice ambiance, other items on menu are flavorful. The service was excellent. Price is higher for a casual dining. Definitely will come back
The ambiance and decor was beautiful and service was
The ambiance and decor was beautiful and service was excellent thanks their manager Fallen, he really knows how to treat guests and was the highlight of our night ! If only every restaurant could have someone as great as him . Food Was A 3/5 Not everything we tried was up to our standards but definitely worth a try , most meals were delicious and dessert here is a must have !
Enjoyable place for lunch and great service.
Popped in on the spur of the moment, and glad that we did. We really liked the layout as it is a room of many rooms, which cuts down on the overall noise and allows you to be able to hear what your dinner companion is saying. Food was good and we were able to get some salads to go for later. We'll certainly return when we're next in the city.
A havenβ¦.
Stopped in as a single business travelerβ¦β¦no reservation. The hostess was very welcoming and immediately sat me at a very nice tableβ¦β¦even though the restaurant was busy. I had the tuna tartare and burger. Both were healthy portions and delicious. I took my time, caught up on emails and relaxed before a busy set of meetings the following day. The staff could not have been friendlier and I never felt rushed. I would highly recommend the spot.
Lovely lunch spot in Chicago
Came here at the end of December, hadn't booked it just purely took a chance on the reviews from google and I am so glad we did. Food was amazing, service was great and had a really lovely vibe to it. We were in a couple but I saw a few groups of families and friends, so I really do think this caters for all. The cobb salad was amazing and so were the mussels. Would definitely recommend
Great handmade cocktails and dinner
We were early for our reservation and sat at the bar before dinner. Taylor the bartender was friendly and personable and made an excellent drink. I described my preference and he made an excellent cocktail with the perfect flavor profile- elderflower, rose gin, lemon, sparkling wine. Delicious. We kept dinner simple- just an appetizer and a salad/burger for entrees. Appetizer was the melted brie with bread and roasted pearsβ¦to die for!!! Our waitress (I forgot her name) was lovely and ensured we left on time for our show. Overall great experience.
Great Restaurant on Michigan Avenue
Beautiful restaurant on Michigan Avenue across from Art Institute. Very attentive waiter. We were there for lunch. Nice variety on menu. I had the fish and chips, which were easily one of the best if not the best I have ever had! French fries were crispy and the fish was in a light batter, very flaky and no fishy taste! My husband had the rib eye steak sandwich which he said was very good also. Nice bar are too and one on the lower level too.
