Aptly named.
This place served great oysters. Staff is friendly, wine is good. Can’t say the same for the overly spiced peel and eat shrimp (I’m always suspicious that this is a cover-up for poor quality), and the beef tartar was…what was it? Anyway, an ok place to spend too much money.

This was our choice for our last night in the amazing city of Charleston. It did not disappoint! We started with the chicory salad and fish cake (both large enough to share)—delicious! The fish cake was light on the breading and perfectly prepared. We next tried the cast iron wagyu sirloin and the triggerfish schnitzel. The beef was perfectly prepared and was mouthwateringly tender. The trigger fish was panko encrusted and perfectly prepared. Both entrees were sublime! Contrary to some reviews, we found the portions generous and satisfying. The ambience is welcoming and our server was helpful and attentive. We would love to come back!

Loved our visit to The Ordinary and it was anything but. Every bite was delicious! I especially loved the Shrimp with rice dish. Our server seemed tepid about it, but the combination of flavors was delicious. The chicory salad with shallot dressing was also absolutely delicious. Our service was on the slow side, with the table next to us receiving their food before us, but the flavorful food more than made up for it. Would highly recommend and definitely go again!

This was one of our best meals in Charleston. Service was incredible, the food was fantastic, and the ambiance was perfect! Definitely worth making a reservation to make sure that you don't miss dining at this Charleston gem!

As it name implies: Ordinary indeed! Okey food. Good service. Poor delivery. All "normal" after Covid messed up restaurant business all over the South East. Hopefully it will not be "the new normal"...

We were able to get in with an early reservation, and it was a pleasant surprise. Great service, great food, wonderful and interesting wine selections, mostly European.

This Restaurant is amazing. We sat at the bar and our server Dalton was excellent. My hubby and I shared the raw oysters, fish pate and I had the okra tomato soup and he had the fish chowder. Our son in law recommended The ordinary. I highly recommend. We will definitely be back and recommend.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Time at the (Extra)Ordinary
We had a splendid evening and a wonderful dining experience at The Ordinary!! The pleasant ambiance, the eye-appealing food presentation (and of course, the taste and flavors!), the introduction to a Slovenian bubbly, and the top-notch service by Rachel (and her colleague - sorry, we do not recall his name). We have raved to other travelers we've met while here in Charleston about The Ordinary!
Be the first to ReplyOne of Charleston’s most consistent culinary hotspots
We have been to Ordinary many times. Why? Because it is that good, that’s why. We love the variety, the consistency of food, ambience and service, and a clever wine list. It never disappoints. Really enjoyed the visit. Portions not too big and great for sharing for a party of 3.

Just Ordinary... the Trigger fish and Rudder fish were small portions and tasteless. Obsequious waiters. Loud and noisy...not a fine dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyORDINARY SUMS IT UP!
Our latest visit to the ORDINARY, one of our erstwhile favorite Charleston eateries, seriously made us question the value proposition of dining out these days.
The ORDINARY's menu was broken into COLD and HOT plates, rather than SMALL and LARGE plates.
Ever see a menu divided between COLD and HOT plates? Ever?
For one, there was little to no indication whether an item was an appetizer or an entree' - a real head-scratcher.
In addition, after an uncomfortably long time perusing the menu, we felt that the choices were fairly unexceptional this time around.
Though our server was friendly and attentive, the train ran off the track when the men at our table received their dishes first, then had to wait before the women guests received their dishes.
Why weren't the women served first?
Why weren't we all served at the same time for that matter?
I consider this to be a major slip-up at any restaurant, more so for one whose website describes its service as being "friendly and DETAILED".
Surprisingly, the two SWORDFISH dishes were served unacceptably lukewarm.
The OKRA GUMBO was an unappetizing looking soup-like concoction with little evidence of "Carolina Gold Midlins".
The CORNMEAL FRIED TARVIN SHRIMP was swimming (so to speak) in tartar sauce, something you would expect at a chain seafood joint.
At the very least, the sauce should've been served in its own ramekin (we've been given them in the past).
The ORDINARY's plating, usually a visual as well as savory delight, was pedestrian and non-descript this time around.
Basic presentation elements that we'd come to expect weren't present this night.
What happened to all of those simple little flourishes that distinguished dining here before?
Truth be told, we should've sent our food back, if not for the fact that we were entertaining guests whom we were trying very hard to impress.
Guests who were too polite to let us know that their dining experience that night was utterly ORDINARY (pun intended).
To their credit, management did respond to our concerns, with an offer "to help with a future booking".
Don't think we'll be taking them up on their offer any time soon, since we'll probably just sit at the bar, have a drink and maybe a couple of oyster sliders, before dining somewhere else.
Outstanding
We visited the Ordinary the night after the disaster at Revival. Service at the Ordinary was great. I don’t want to insult the Ordinary, or to discourage you from going, but I might describe the Ordinary as a gussied-up Oyster Bar. They have an extensive raw menu, but enough other offerings that you will find something to like, if raw oysters are not your thing.
Service and food were outstanding.
This is Why you’re here!
Historic building was originally a bank - gorgeous. Great bar, grabbed a seat, small talk with other tourists. The bartender suggest the smoked clams were “best thing on the menu” paired with a “pain killer” featuring lots of rum. Yummy!
Ordered the Gumbo as my main course, a hearty stew that must take hours to make but served here in a flash paired with the classic “Planter’s Punch” it why we’re here!
An evening to remember
Excellent restaurant! Service was impeccable, ambience lovely, and dishes were to-die-for. Try the Crispy Oyster Sliders, Mustard Crusted Swordfish, and Carolina Gold Rice Pudding with John's Island Strawberries, all AMAZING!

I’m quite surprised at the negative reviews of this restaurant. Our experience was great. The hostess was pleasant and seated us where we asked, and our waiter explained the menu in great detail, and was attentive and pleasant throughout the meal. We had six shared dishes, and they were not only delicious, but each was uniquely wonderful in some way. The fried oyster sliders were beyond amazing. In addition to the sliders, we had the fish pâté, escarole salad, fish cake, cornmeal coated shrimp, and the budino. I‘d recommend each and every one.

We had an early dinner here and were very pleased. The oysters were wonderful. Great wine selection. We also had the sliced shrimp.

Delicious! Oysters are the best in town and the grouper dish was amazingly tender but crispy on the outside and very flavorful. Would definitely go back. Highly recommend!

Fish house situated in 1920's bank building that is decorated like a French Bistro has become a favorite in Charleston. Only drawback is the lighting somewhat dim to read the menu so patrons had to use flashlight on their iphone to see the menu. It is a wonder why management hasn't fixed the lighting problem??? Great starter was smoked seafood pate , but it needed a perk me up of salt to enhance the subtle flavor. Wonderful chocolate mousse coupe with hidden crispy inside.

Everything about this place is spot on. The menu, food quality and presentation, and service is exceptional. Try the shrimp toast small plate. You will not be disappointed.
