The Punch Bowl Inn, Crosthwaite Kendal Reviews from The Last Year
A fantastic hidden gem
This place is a hidden gem. A lovely greeting at reception. Welcome cream tea on arrival which we had in front of the fire. The accommodation was beautiful. Evening dinner was in the main restaurant which is really pretty with a roaring fire at one end. The food was some of the nicest we have eaten. Beautifully serviced, excellent quality and present by lovely, professional staff. The breakfast was the best ever. The quality of ingredients was 5 star and all served by the lovely Gemma, a fellow scouser.
Poor Meal
Visited for Sunday Lunch and after hearing very good reviews was sum what disappointed in the quality of the food, the sirloin of beef was extremely tough and inedible. We also heard other people in the restaurant complaining as well. The front of house manager apologised and gave us a 5% discount. My thoughts were the meal was over priced and would I recommend....maybe not. Having said this the service was good.
Friendly staff, lovely food and cosy atmosphere
My wife and I visited for a birthday lunch, in February 2024, and we had absolutely no complaints whatsoever. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food was delicious, particularly the pudding, and there was a nice cosy atmosphere, with a log burner crackling away. Perfect on a dreary February day. I did find my meal was a little under seasoned, but I didn't mind that as you can the season to your own taste, and far better than being overly salty. Overall, a very pleasant experience and really not too pricey either. I would really recommend the Punch Bowl Inn
High Quality in all respects
We took advantage of the 2 nights for 1 January offer and had a superb time. This is a beautiful unspoilt area with lovely walking close by. The pub itself is very attractive. Our room, Peake was lovely, very cosy with a massive bathroom. A cream tea was included in the deal. It was delicious, a freshly baked scone and lovely cream. An excellent start. The bar and both dining rooms are cosy and inviting. The menu is not extensive but everything was very tempting. The two stand out dishes were the Guinea fowl and lamb rump which were both absolutely outstanding. The lamb in particular was incredible, probably the best we have ever tasted and so tender. The only dish that didn’t quite work was the cod which wasn’t very flavoursome and the fish sauce accompanying it tasted like butterscotch sauce, no fish flavour at all. A shame. The breakfasts were huge and again excellent quality and cooked beautifully. The chef is obviously a talent. They also have some wonderful staff members, friendly warm and professional. Service as it should be. We will be back I hope and would gladly recommend the Punch Bowl to friends.
Genuine warm hospitable welcome - bravo!
On a bitterly cold Cumbrian winter’s day - we arrived at the PunchBowl without a lunch reservation and despite being fully booked the lovely manageress found a place for our party of 3. The restaurant was packed but Alice and her staff made us feel utterly welcome and cleared a space in their party-festooned mezzanine seating area. The food was exceptional - the signature cheese soufflé was delicious and my spicy butternut squash soup was delectable. Our abiding memory of the PunchBowl will be of conviviality and genuine hospitality - and of course the great meal. Bravo! We shall certainly return.
Fabulous!
Had a great night here. The food was absolutely beautiful. Those beef cheeks were incredible. Super friendly staff give a really lovely warm welcome and have great banter, as well as providing fabulous service. We’d 100% recommend. Wish we lived closer, we’d be here all the time!
Quality, warmth and cosiness in a relaxed but professional atmosphere
Warmth and quality from start to finish, the Punch Bowl gave us a cosy weekend and a great birthday celebration in the Lakes. The quality of the food and the rooms as well as service was fantastic. We enjoyed the bar and the restaurant and we were well looked after in both.
A few niggles but would probably visit again
We were disappointed that on a Sunday there was only one vegetarian choice and on the kids menu none at all,to be fair on request they did do some kids veggie sausage but I had checked on booking that veggie options were on the menu and assured there was, also our order was take very quickly and our starters arrived really fast however we waited over 45 mins for our mains to follow…not ideal when you have hungry children with you,the waiter brought what he said were 4 x cauliflower cheese so everyone tucked in only to realise one potato dish was missing for our veggie diner, turns out it was 3x cauliflower and one potato we raised the mistake thinking the potato dish would be provided as a good will gesture but sadly no.However the food when it did arrive was delicious …the Sunday roast beef was a good sized portion and the side order of beetroot was very tasty, the bill including drink for 8x adults 1 child came to £370.00 … I think I would visit again and hope the little niggles were a one off.
Hidden Gem
Great hotel. Excellent value for money. Away from the crowds of Windermere and Bowness, yet still central. Breakfasts really good. Been staying and eating here for about 16 years and never disappointed.
A Gem in the Lakes
Excellent place for a light lunch on our short tour of the countryside east of Lake Windermere. We received a very friendly welcome and enjoyed our meal and drinks in the pleasant outside seating area. We will definitely be back in future for another meal, or perhaps to stay in one of the boutique rooms.
OUTSTANDING COUNTRY INN
I rarely hand out 5 stars, but in this case it's justified. We didn't stay unfortunately due to time restrictions, but wish we had. The quality of food here is simply outstanding judging by what we had. With a time restriction we didn't have time for three courses, but the two we had were stunning. I had the Guinea fowl and my partner had the sea bass. I'd barely tasted the Guinea fowl before my partner speared a taste and. threatened to demolish it --it was just divine--subtle, tender and full of flavour. Creamed potatoes were perfect. The dish was so good I could have had it again! My partner had the Sea bass which she raved over, and like me doesn't hand out praise easily. We didn't imbibe as she is teetotal and I was driving--another time we will stay over. Very professional helpful service without being obtrusive, the lovely lady who came to our table was so friendly and knowledgeable, checking allergies between courses shows good management and training too.. I am a hotel manager and my partner is also a hospitality professional--we were both very impressed by everything here. Oh and the lemon tart with damson sorbet is exquisite. Take a bow Punch bowl and team--you nailed it.
Perfect family treat
Ok - so it might seem a bit pricing but really don't worry about that ..... because boy is it worth it! A family treat, 3 courses each and each one exquisitely presented and perfect in every way. A beautiful Inn in a magical part of the world. Love it!
Everything about the Punchbowl will delight you! The rooms
Everything about the Punchbowl will delight you! The rooms are superbly decorated, spacious and comfortable. The food is special (you might as well book dinner for every night you are there IMHO). And the staff is fantastic--friendly and accommodating. I'd return in a split second with any opportunity!
