The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara Goleta Reviews from The Last Year
Truly five star service.
We just finished four lovely days at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara. Without exception, every staff person was cheerful, friendly, and helpful. Our room was immaculate and stayed that way, with twice-daily service. The servers and bartenders were accommodating and helpful without being officious or smarmy in any way. The pool attendants remembered my name and seating preferences. The grounds are beautifully kept. I honestly can’t think of a criticism. The people who wrote recent negative reviews could not have stayed at the same resort.
why return. indeed?
reviewing the The 'O' Bar + Kitchen at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara and the front desk. The food was poor and expensive. I ordered a $30. Both it and the fries were VERY heavily salted. I've had better tasting burgers almost anywhere. After spending over $100,we left only to be informed that they no longer validated parking and I owed $20 dollars for the daily rate. We'd been there an hour and a half. This was without any warning and without any signs or comment at the valet parking drop off. We went to find a manager, a tall blonde at the front desk (5/11/24 evening) who was not interested in helping until pointed out that we cold readily take our business elsewhere and would not return to the 'O'bar' if we were forced to pay for the valet parking. The woman reacted with barely concealed anger, irritation and resentment. When my wife suggested a manager be informed that it would be a good idea to let customers know about the parking fee, she responded with a tight-lipped, I am a manager. .... then she should know better. She might also want to re-take the customer service, manners and presentation portions of her training. We've stayed at many a Four Seasons and similar hotels and have experienced anything like this. Though we ended up having the fee waived, the entire evening crashed on that interaction. At best, we'll be hesitant to return. We're only too happy to spend our money where it is appreciated rather than where the hotel staff feel that they are entitled to it.
Over Priced, In need of a renovation and feels like a Marriott
The grounds of this property are lovely. However, it is 20 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, and so you are limited to the resort for dining and entertainment, unless you drive 20+ minutes to town. The wineries are also 45 minutes away, so again not exactly convenient. The hotel staff is all very friendly. I was disappointed that it was our 24th wedding anniversary and we were not given even a note congratulating us, nor a bottle of wine or some pastries in our room. We stayed 3 nights, spent over $2800 and you thought we might at least get a little recognition. The rooms are a bit tired, need a renovation. The shutters don't shut completely and so the room is light in the morning and it's difficult to sleep in. Two nights, Sunday and Monday the music was so loud from parties in the main building playing until 11:30 p.m. one night and after midnight on Monday. I called to complain, but it is ridiculous at a Ritz Carlton to have to do so. I had a facial at the spa, which was lovely, but was shocked that $67 (22% service fee) was tacked onto my bill. That made my 50 minute facial $375! I was not told that it was optional, so I paid the $67 service fee. The tennis center was far from the hotel, down a dirt path, and the facility was in disrepair. All the rackets were old, they didn't offer pickleball, the courts needed service. There were no towels or water offered. Parking is $75 per night, which is expensive. In addition, there is a resort fee. Overall, the cost is WAY above what I would pay for this resort. We stayed with the American Express platinum package, and there was some confusion about the breakfast that was included. Ultimately, they took the breakfast off of our bill. Another disappointment was that most American Express hotels allow room service as an option for breakfast. This one does not. The fitness room was very nice and well-equipped.
Well worth a repeat trip! You won't be disappointed.
What can I say, , , It's a Ritz Carlton facility located right on the ocean in the lovely Santa Barbara area. Our room was delightful, and opened to an outside fire pit and a well manicured lawn. The food, the service, and the facility did not disappoint in any way. Beautiful grounds as you can see on their web site, and a wonderful swimming pool with a great Bistro restaurant adjacent for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Our stay was in Villa #1-104 from April 26 thru April 28, 2024
needs TLC and attention to details
We have stayed at this property manyf times in the past and we always hope that we will see improvements, sadly that has not happened. Service is gracious and generally good, but not what we would expect from this level of resort. The car valet staff was excellent, no complaints about that at all. We waited to be noticed and seated at the bar in the lobby area for 5 minutes one late afternoon and finally gave up and sat somewhere else without getting a drink. At check in we were not offered to be driven to our room as we have been in the past, No one even told us it was an option, although in the past it has always been mentioned/offered. We are in our 70's and I guess it was assumed that we would walk on our own which was a fair distance down to the building. We were in an ocean view suite that was quite expensive, and it felt dated and needed some TLC. The sliding doors to one of the 2 bathrooms was off the track and did not close properly. I am sure that it would have been addressed had we called to the front desk, but it should have been noticed before we checked into the room. Also, one of the towels was torn in the center. Yes, there were plenty of other towels but at the price we paid and for the type of property, we expect better. We mentioned both issues at check out and nothing was done to make up for it. As Titanium members we hoped for more. We pass though Santa Barbara quite often and usually stay at this property, but I am thinking that we will look for somewhere else next time.
Bacara: Once a world class hotel is no longer
I love Bacara - the views and area are spectacular. However, after being taken over by Ritz Carlton, the staff and hotel efficiency has gone down and not up to the standard of this amazing hotel. Checking into the hotel was terrible. The front desk and bellman do the bare minimum. Your choice at check in is to wait 15 -30 minutes for a golf cart or take your luggage to your villa yourself. I can carry my luggage - but I don’t want to. So, we opted to walk to our room, and the front desk said the bellman would meet us at our room with the luggage. 45minutes later, no luggage. So, back to the lobby to retrieve our luggage - only to have the bellman argue that the luggage was delivered. It was not. And they found the luggage stored. This would not be so bad except there were 4 kids huddled and chatting at the bell desk. So “too busy” was not the reason. Restaurant. 10-15 minute wait - plenty of open tables, not enough staff to cover. This is an efficiency, management issue. Our event had a pasta bar that made customized pasta items. However, the chef was constantly recommending the pre made pasta in the big dishes. I used to love this hotel and am sad that it’s no longer “The Bacara” … it’s now just chain hotel with a view.
We are Ambassador Elite members of Bonvoy.
We have stayed at multiple Ritz-Carltons throughout the World. We recently stayed at this "Ritz-Carlton" resort. I use quotations around the Ritz-Carlton name for many factors. Upon arrival we were not greeted by valet service offering to take our bags and escort us inside. There was no doorman either. Usually we are greeted with friendly "Hello Mr & Mrs. ___ Welcome to the Ritz-Carlton". No greetings here. Perhaps they were understaffed or had a sudden rush? In any regard, we showed ourselves the way to the front desk. Being Ambassador Elite members we are usually upgraded if possible. No upgrades were ever mentioned. During previous stays at all Ritz resorts, the front desk will offer a welcome beverage to members. Not at this "Ritz". We were given our room cards and a map to find our villa. Even though there were a few attendants standing around, no one offered to help us. This is where the red flags began to add up. Is the Ritz-Carlton name is trying to distance itself from this property? Why though? Upon locating our room and entering the door we quickly found the reason. The overwhelming odor of must and mold overtook us. My husband, who usually can't smell a thing, was opening every door and window in the room to air it out. Usually Ritz-Carlton rooms smell WONDERFUL, FRESH and CLEAN. The room was dark and extremely dated. The furniture was in extremely worn shape, the rug old and tired. The tile floors were extremely dirty, stained and cracked. And - RAT FECES?!? Definitely not the level of a quality 5 star Ritz-Carlton! Once again is the Ritz trying to distance it's name from this resort? The bathrobes weren't even labeled...ha!The bathroom was in just as bad of shape. Water stains on the shower. I will attach photos. I will say though, the grounds are immaculate and beautiful. Perhaps the budget is misaligned? Too much goes toward exterior and not enough towards interior? We had dinner at Angel Oak and waited over an hour for any food to come out. The bartender seemed overworked, undertrained or just had an off day (based on his level of enthusiasm) comped our meal and drinks which was nice. All in all, the property grounds were well manicured and it is a beautiful resort. The rooms definitely need upgrading. Housekeeping needs attention and some employees could use a refresher course in customer service. Unfortunately, most likely will not be on our list of resorts to revisit.
Amazing experience at The Ritz, Bacara.
This is the place to go if you'd like to get away from the hustle-n-bustle. It has everything you need so you don't have to leave the grounds. The private beach is ridiculous! You can run in the sand during low tide and enjoy the ocean. The hidden gem is the coffee shop in front of the property. A worker there told me some people drive out of their way to visit them for a cup of joe. The people working there are so nice and the coffee is fantastic. You can't go wrong here but remember it's The Ritz, so everything you eat/drink come with at least $$$ signs.
We were celebrating a friend's birthday here and he ended
We were celebrating a friend's birthday here and he ended up getting a suite. It was such a beautiful hotel and amazing staff. I would definitely check it out here!! Food and restaurants were great too. Drive away to a bit of paradise from the city to the quiet and secure place of this Ritz Carlton.
Extremely Disappointed, No where close to as good in the past.
One of my favorite books is "You can't go home again" by Thomas Wolfe. A large part of my life was coming to peace with the fact that as much as I fantasized as to how wonderful places I had been and lived were so great I had to learn to accept that when I returned years later it simply was not the same place I remembered and too many times the reality of today was that those places had changed for the worst and were nothing like I wanted to remember. Very sadly we are highly disappointed on our return to the Bacara. It is not what it was 16 years ago. The good news is the physical plant, buildings and architecture, and grounds continue to be beautiful and compelling. Other than that the place has gone down hill. To begin with there was a serious lack of dining venues. My understanding from discussions with some resort managers is the hospitality industry as a whole is doing away with room service, fine dining, and any kind of up scale food service and instead concentrating on banquet services and low end dining venues with very limited menu selections at fairly high prices for what you get. Example a $30 hamburger or a $26 Pina Colada or a $48 breakfast buffet and all of them ++ and I should say for parties of 8(think families with small children) a 26% service charge the highest I have ever seen. They say they lose money on food and beverage especially room service. How the Bacara loses money is beyond me at those prices. All the bean counters do is concentrate on the bottom line of every venue. Instead of looking at the bottom line at the end of the year for the venue as a whole and a list of happy complimentary customers who appreciate the good service and great dining options the company higher ups decide to only concentrate on the big ticket items like gala dinners for 200 people at a company function. We live on an Omni Resort that has publicly stated as far as they are concerned they would offer no dining options on property. To their credit on check in they provide you with a list of nearby restaurants to go to for meals. The evening we arrived at the Bacara there were no available dining options for dinner other than limited room service as they were involved with a large corporate event that for all intents shut down everything. When staff was asked what alternatives they might recommend they stated "We don't know please hold why we ask someone else? In addition we had breakfast one morning that for two people was over $100 and had to complain to the manager as my wifes meal was never delivered to the table. Excuse me? Coming from a high end Ritz resort. To me unacceptable. There was a serious lack of attention to detail. Our first night after arrival we tried to turn on a lamp only to find out the bulb assembly area had broken loose and the bulb and wires were hanging down. We wanted to use the coffee machine only to find the water reservoir with a crack in it. We requested special bed linen procedure due to a medical condition and just prior to bed on returning from a walk they completely ignored our requests. But what was most alarming was every day we were there even after explaining the situation to the housekeeper in the room they just ignored us and refused to follow our requests, despite this being less of a comfort option and more of a medical need. Again too many small things which pointed to a lack of care and attention to detail. When were they going to replace a broken lamp, once someone got electrocuted? It seemed that no one communicated concerns or areas that needed attention and certainly did not reflect the kind of attention you should expected based on the price they were charging. I was clear communication that management is more interested in making money than taking care of their customers which is a 100% deal breaker for me and mine. I am more than willing to pay high prices for outstanding products and service. My experience is you get what you pay for and I expect to receive the service paid for. But at some point prices become completely offensive and have no relation to what you are receiving. I believe today it is because today's managers are following what I have been told is the Harvard business model which is to charge whatever the market will bear and you will eventually learn how high you can go when people stop buying your product. This is in contrast to what I believe should the model which is what I call the Henry Ford model which is produce and make the best high quality product at the lowest price possible making a reasonable profit and make money by selling millions or billions of units of your product. It took a while but I finally reviewed their better wine list and the wine prices were the highest I have ever seen and to me offensive. In general you did not receive good value for the prices they charged. In comparison today we love Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California whose prices are as high or higher than the Bacara but the food, beverage, and service, even at a higher price, provided us with great value and we can't wait to return to Pelican Hill and hopefully it is a place we can come home again without being disappointed. It is my opinion that staff was unable to deliver service because their hands were tied by managements policy and procedures. It is obvious every staff person has been trained to say at the end of their conversation with you to say ":And if there is anything you need please do not hesitate to ask and we will take care of it immediately". It was very frustrating to speak with staff and have them tell you they could not help you and then tell you to go ahead and ask again for anything. It was maddening and obvious that management had no intention of the staff being authorized to do something different other than to tell you please ask for help over and over. We asked for housekeeping cleanup between 9 and 10 AM and vacated the room so they could do it. We returned at 11:30 AM and they had not been there and the rest of our stay showed up later in the day usually when we were trying to take a nap. Staff was friendly and available but in the end lacked any authority to actually help you. Here is an example of what we expect. We arrived at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa years ago late at night and worn out. We were going to get room service but nothing on the room service menu appealed to us. We called the front desk and explained the situation and they said let us bring all of our restaurant menus to your room and you can order anything from any menu and we will deliver it to your room. Forget the Bacara doing anything like that, they might lose $20. I can tell you to this day we have driven 100 miles out of our way to repeatedly return and stay at the Grand Hyatt Tampa which we highly recommend to you. The Grand Hyatt staff is empowered by management to care for their guests and make on the spot decisions to solve problems for their guests. Our experience is that the Bacara does not, but trains the staff to always say “Please call us anytime for anything and we will take care of it immediately” despite having no authority to do anything. One small insult was when we checked in a hold was placed on my credit card at check in to guarantee payment. This is not unusual as most hotels today do this but it is usually a modest amount so far in my experience. What was insulting is the entire stay plus in my opinion an excessive additional amount was added to I assume cover 3 meals a day for 2 people at inflated prices again to guarantee payment that of course would not be charged at check out if not used. But ask yourself what message does this send. I received the message we are primarily interested in full payment or guarantee of same at the start of your stay and we do not trust you and frankly don’t care because what is important to us is the money and not you. In the end we were terribly disappointed during our stay at the Bacara and have no intention of every going there again and recommend everyone else stay away. I have seen comments on Trip Advisor where I note multiple terrible and poor reviews echoing my comments. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

The partial ocean view provided a serene backdrop, allowing you to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the coastline. The flickering firepit added a cozy touch, perfect for evenings spent under the stars, sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the gentle ocean breeze. It sounds like the ideal setting for a truly relaxing retreat, where every moment was infused with luxury and tranquility.
Beautiful beachfront location
Stayed as a family, with our wider family group over New Years. Had a lovely time and greatly enjoyed the grounds, cosy rooms, and beachfront walks. The views from the Bacara are simply fabulous. The pool is lovely, and the spa was beautiful if a little overpriced for treatments. Staff were very helpful and there is a lovely relaxed vibe overall in the hotel. It is a good location for families as they’re very welcoming to kids and our son loved running around the grounds. Hope to stay there again when we visit Santa Barbara!
The Ritz-Carlton Santa Barbara property is a villa styled
The Ritz-Carlton Santa Barbara property is a villa styled property. Stayed for two nights with a friend on a weekday. We were at Villa 19 on the second floor. Quite a bit of walk coming from the welcome desk. The resort comes with multiple pools throughout the property, spacious gym and dance room, and other fine dining establishments. You also get a private beach where guests only allowed. Normally, the prices here ranges from $600 - $900+ on weekdays and $1,000+ a night on weekends. That is one hefty price to pay. Needlessly to say, it wasn't worth staying here. I can't imagine guests paying full prices on weekends and having mediocre experiences at a 5 star resort. The issue here is valet are very slow to pick up your car. Once it took them about 25 minutes to retrieve our car. I tried to call valet from the number before pickup attached to the ticket but it went blank. One of the pools was inoperable as they put caution tape around it. Also, the gym had a significant leak on the floor and all they put was a bucket and a couple of towels on the floor. It's still soaked in water and it's a trip hazard for guests. Overall: I won't be coming here again because, it's just not worth the money. Paying $$$ for the hotel and paying $70 for valet parking which takes a while to retrieve. Only positive about the experience was the complimentary yoga session and the stunning views.
The Ritz-Carlton Bacara is hosting my employer's off-site
The Ritz-Carlton Bacara is hosting my employer's off-site this week, and I'm already very impressed with the level of service the ladies and gentlemen here are providing. From the check-in process to the turndown service to the banquet reception on the lawn, every member of the staff has been quick to anticipate my needs and/or wants. The facility itself is everything one would expect from a brand of this prestige, but the people have been what has set my experience thus far apart from other Marriott properties I've stayed at. Without so much as an inquiry on my part, the concierge upgraded my room. He was very kind to remind me of the times of the banquet reception the first night, and invited me to enjoy the hotel's signature complimentary cocktail each evening in the bar adjacent to the lobby, and even asked me if I'd prefer a golf cart ride to my villa or walk. I opted to walk, but noticed a close coworker waiting for the golf cart herself, and joined her for the ride. Steven was quite pleasant and reminded us of the directions to each of our villas while also reminding us of how to get to the evening's reception. I'll post separate reviews of the food and beverage experiences I have during my stay this week, so stay tuned for more!
Rain or shine, this resort is a beautiful destination!
This oceanfront property is stunning with the various lodging buildings, outdoor space and on-site amenities. The bellhop's golf cart delivery to the room was much appreciated after long flights and travel delays. The spacious room with the soaking tub was a treat, though the property features encouraged me to explore and enjoy the tasting room, coffee house, gift shops, spa, gym, and the lobby's restaurant/bar. The drinks and food were fantastic as was the bartender who shared local tips and spot-on recommendations. The meeting staff was friendly and knowledgeable. All that, then add stunning views once the rain stopped. Enjoy this experience!
Fabulous Beachside hotel in Santa Barbara
Great hotel close to the beach in Santa Barbara. Staff was excellent every day. Loved having the golf cart transport around the property. The guys and spa in separate buildings. At least 3 restaurants on the property. We are at Angel Oak, steakhouse one night and enjoyed smoking cigars at Cobina restaurant. You can even get a smoking jacket and blankets for those chilly nights. We had a room with partial ocean view. Enjoyed this property and it was much larger than I realized. 2 swimming pools and 2 hot tubs. Also had kids activities daily. Onsite wine tasting room and outdoor activities for adults (meditation, beach walk, etc). My husband had special decorations in the room for my birthday from the hotel - balloons and flowers. And chocolates. Would come back for sure.
I mean it's a Ritz Carlton.
This place is beautiful! Service is amazing. Prices are expensive but that is to be expected of a resort. Loved the Cigar Bar and O Bar. Pool area is very nice and all the staff is extremely friendly. I would for sure come back.
We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara recently to attend
We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara recently to attend World of Pinot Noir, which was being hosted there. We've been to Santa Barbara before, but have never stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, or really this far away from downtown before. Even with all the recent rain and wind, the property was very nicely maintained and the grounds staff really did an excellent job keeping walkways clear from fallen brush, etc. It's a beautiful property and just so much fun to walk around and explore. That being said, there are some improvements they should consider making, primarily for safety. There were many stairs and flat walkway areas that accumulated a lot of standing water - in particular the stairs coming down from the lobby/"O" Bar and going down towards the spa. Although there are safety strips on the stairs, parts of the stairs were extremely slippery and nobody wants to step down into a large puddle of standing water and get their shoes all wet. The staff and the service here is absolutely top notch, but I would expect no less from a Ritz. Everyone was extremely friendly and would go out of their way to help or accommodate requests. It should of course go without saying, but expect to pay a premium for any of the on-property dining. A small oat milk latte at their cafe will set you back $10-11 with a tip, for example. At their Japanese restaurant, San Setto, you'll pay $20+ for every two pieces of nigiri. We didn't have any issues with food delivery to the Ritz so that's also an option when you're looking for something they don't offer (or want to save a little money!). They have a special table set up in the lobby to receive food deliveries so it's pretty simple.
We stopped by and came here for lunch.
We walked around and the property and the property is absolutely gorgeous. The ocean views are breathtaking. Their restaurant had good food and excellent customer service. Can't wait to stay here for the weekend. Highly recommended!
Strange hotel.
No ambassador benefits, no amenity, no upgrades, etc. No acknowledgement of a special occasion that they inquired about and learned about prior to arrival. At spa check out, I learned that the massages posted at $265 on their website are actually sold at $355 (plus tip) if it happens to be a weekend day! This would have been good to know prior to booking... Once it took about 30m for my car to arrive from valet, and when it arrived the valet had picked up his friend who he explained had to park far away - this seemed strange and I certainly didn't expect for the valet to be driving other people around in my car. Most times when I requested anything, it either didn't arrive or it took a very long time to arrive. Housekeeping does not replace basic amenities like cotton swabs during stay over service. They ask if you'd like to make an appointment for turndown, but then they don't show up for that appointment. The food and beverage was excellent!

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
