Disappointing.
First of all it was disappointing to find that the lunch menu was the same as the evening menu. There were no specials - other than Guinness on tap for St Patrick’s Day! Despite the fact that the food was excellent, it was spoilt by the fact that the service was so unbelievably slow and haphazard. We were a group of three and had a drink and a starter each, two desserts and three hot drinks. This took three hours exactly. At most there were 12/14 patrons, so it was hardly busy. Having supported this restaurant for over 25 years, I will want to hear a lot of positive reviews before I go back?

My husband booked a last minute night away. We walked the shorter circular walk, 6k and highly recommended. A great walk. Not too difficult and very well signposted. So good that we did it on the Wednesday afternoon and then again on the Thursday morning!! We stayed at The Stagg and what a treat!! Tom's culinary skills are second to none. Absolutely delicious. The whole team could not have been more friendly and amenable. We will be back. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyAn over priced visit.
As past regular visitors to The Stag, we were looking forwards to our meal. However, it soon became obvious that there was a management change. The old welcome was missing, but the waiting staff were attentive. The food was nowhere up to the previous quality and presentation. It was slow to arrive and near cold. The price was still as much as our previous visit in the Spring, but what we received was nowhere worth what was charged for. We will not return,

This really is a super special place for food. The presentation and quality of food was outstanding. The brioche and marmite butter were delicious. It is so worth a visit for a special occasion. Chef Tom and his partner Vittoria made us feel very welcome.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable but not special
Perfectly acceptable meal but not special. Great starters. Mains were not as thrilling. Beef fillet wasn’t rare and probably not fillet! Nice presentation on plate with interesting vegetables. Lovely service, attentive and quick. Smaller part of restaurant was open due to mid week wasn’t quite the gastro pub atmosphere we were expecting
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing experience
We have dined at the Stagg a couple of times previously and enjoyed the whole experience. Unfortunately on this occasion the food was definitely not up to scratch. The plates were cold, my steak tasted burnt and the meals were generally not hot. We understand that there was only one chef in the kitchen so it is hardly surprising our three different meals were not up to standard. The waitress could not have been more friendly and personable. Given what we paid the whole experience was disappointing. Probably will not go back now.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming and disappointing.
We were on holiday for the week locally and enjoyed our meal here last year so much we thought we'd treat ourselves again - it's not exorbitant by any means but it's not the place you'd go on a weekly basis. We didn't read any recent reviews; we didn't think there was a need. The young lady serving was utterly charming and very helpful, the room was warm and cosy, and it was obviously a quiet night by stark contrast to our previous visit. The menu was more limited this time round, and the sides and extras advertised on the website were not printed on the menu we were given. We asked for sides though and got what we wanted. The parfait to start was more of a mousse, beautifully presented but in an earthenware bowl which I know is on trend but how are you meant to get your knife in to put onto your bread? Surely a medium sized plate or slate would make things easier. The bread was very disappointing, almost stale, tasteless and very crumbly - a cross between brioche and focaccia. The beef fillet was tender but almost cold, and the watercress pomme puree stodgy with a skin on top. The trio of pork was very good although the fillet was very chewy and rather dry. The vanilla pannacotta was far too set, had a thick skin on it, and as a trendy twist was served in a bowl. Why? This is just lazy. It should be skinless, cooked in a mould and turned out and have slightly wobbly set - well that's the traditional way. Such a disappointment we didn't stay for coffee and won't be rushing back. By stark contrast we ate the next night at another favourite - The Cider Barn at Pembridge. Similar prices, much more choice and far better food and ambience, it was buzzing. The owner was hands on and very chatty and we had a memorable meal, needless to say we'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyBad Attitude from Owner/Manager
Visited The Stagg for Sunday lunch with friends. The food was good, although quite pricey. However, the reason for my 3 stars is that the man who I believe is Front of House/Owner was very grumpy with us on arrival and we felt like we were an inconvenience. One of our party was Vegan and there was no vegan option on the menu and on asking, the Grumpy owner was very rude and said we should have ordered a vegan meal ahead of time. The chef came out to see us and he did rustle up something Vegan but it all seemed a huge deal to them and they seemed very annoyed with us. The waitress was lovely but unfortunately I won’t be returning as it wasn’t very welcoming.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing, after so much hype
We'd heard so many good things about The Stagg Inn, from being recommended in reviews we'd read online to local hear-say about how wonderful the place is. We were pleased on arrival, really homey aesthetic, with gorgeous mugs hanging from the ceiling to add to the 'pub' atmosphere. Accessible menu, as I am gluten free, and our waitress was really attentive and sweet natured! Honestly, the service was mostly faultless (especially on her account!) The starters were lovely, I had the Beetroot with Goats Cheese Panna Cotta and my folks shared a Chicken Liver Parfait, again delicious! Where we were just let down was the risotto my mum and I had for mains, super overly creamy - just too much. We both only ate half, it was really sickly. Honestly I wasn't going to write a review about this, as I honestly know establishments can make mistakes, and they took one of our Risottos off the bill as a gesture of good will - which was honourable of them. However, the reason I am writing this 3 star review goes down to the 12.5% service charge, which was not detailed on our bill, and just added on at the end when putting the sum through the card reader. We do not as a rule of thumb turn our noses up to paying service, and would always indeed pay a tip upon leaving in cash or added on to the card machine. But just rounding our bill up by 12.5%, and not informing us anywhere that we were going to be charged this statutory amount (on the menu nor our bill) just felt a bit shady - especially after the debacle with our mains. Mainly sharing this, as to be honest we were just stunned. And when my father asked the gentleman who we paid (presumably the owner or manager) what the additional fee was for, he was very rude to my father, and I didn't appreciate that. All in all, disappointing - wouldn't visit again, but wouldn't deter others from going, would hope you had a better visit than us though!
Be the first to ReplyOkay food, let down by service and atmosphere
We came here for dinner after reading the great reviews online as well as it’s recommendation in the Michelin guide however we were left disappointed. On arrival we were seated in a large cold room away from other guests (despite the rest of the restaurant being half empty) It took 20 min for us to receive our drinks and a further 15 min to have our starters. Despite asking several times, nothing was done about the heating. The terrine starter was nice but the bread was dry. The mussels in my main were dry and over cooked, my partner enjoyed his pork belly but said it was lukewarm. We then had to wait another 15-20min for our bill. With no background music and the cold room, it made for a rather uninviting atmosphere. The service was really quite slow and lacked in professionalism, despite 3 staff members being on for about 7 tables. Other guests also complained about the quality of the food and drink, sending back both their mains and wine. This was supposed to be a special meal for a special occasion but failed to live up to previous reviews, I would not return.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful food
Beautiful food. Everyone loved it. Lovely staff. Just great. A couple of small things that didn't spoil our meal but others may feel the same....tartare sauce has chopped egg in it and was just to eggy for me. I didn't get the capers coming through. One of our party would have liked a little more potato with the chicken dish, but the flavours and cookery skill were wonderful.

Myself and my husband visited yesterday evening for dinner. Shan was an amazing host. The food and wine were outstanding! Fillet of beef and bread and butter pudding we're the best I've ever had We We will most definitely return when we are in the area again.
Be the first to ReplySunday gastro treat
If you are looking for a gastro Sunday special treat, The Stagg at Titley, Wow it was amazing! Very very clever cooking and presentation and the different, delicate, perfectly balanced tastes were absolutely amazing. I don’t normally take pictures but apparently we eat with our eyes and this was my salmon starter. It was beautiful! Equally, for my main I choose pork and the home-made apricot stuffing which was crunchy, punchy and so differently good. Baby root vegetables, Savoy cabbage, roast potatoes and clearly in-house, prepared apple sauce and (I think, my palate is rubbish) a celeriac purée. Cheese and biscuits with port was my finale. We were a group of eight, last out and noisy, but the staff and the front of house guy were brilliant throughout. Wines, beers, ambience, value, first class.
Be the first to ReplyAnother great stay at The Stagg
3rd visit to the Stagg and it won’t be our last. It’s the first time we have stayed in rooms above the restaurant and the Harley room was very comfortable with a great bed. Food was equally delicious. As previous posters have said it’s under new management however Shan is clearly passionate about developing the stagg further.
Be the first to ReplyTastefully restored village pub with excellent food and rooms
We have eaten here several times over the last 10 years and have not been disappointed. Stayed 2 nights for our 50th wedding anniversary in December 2021. It was just as good as we hoped. Rooms are comfortable, not luxurious. It is the food, ambience of the bar and dining rooms, and the friendliness of the staff that one comes for, plus of course the beautiful countryside and interesting towns like Presteigne and Kington. Food has elegance and interesting flavours but does not leave you hungry.

Today’s lunch was superb. Brilliant food and delightful service.
If anything, better than ever, and that’s saying something
Enjoy the ambience and vote for a further Sri Lankan event!!
Sri Lankan banquet
Visited on Saturday evening to try the 'Taste of Sri Lanka', and came away very happy. Fantastic food and really good service. The green chilli and coriander chutney was amazing. All of the starters were excellent. Mains (all eight!) Were tasty, and the dessert was a fine finish. The Lion lager from Sri Lanka was a good accompaniment!

Be the first to ReplyA Special Place
The Stagg Inn has never failed us. This is an ideal restaurant to celebrate special occasions. We both began with bread, oil and home made crisps and then the duck and venison, which were very tasty.
The food and service are outstanding. Clever cooking. Thank you.
A splendid rural restaurant and hotel
We had a lovely stay at The Stagg..a winter break with our dog. Shan was a brilliant host and the staff could not have been more helpful. They were all local with the right attitude..gifted amateurs…attentive, smiley and efficient. The food was great and good value. Well done all…you must have had a tough time through the pandemic and it’s nice to see you have emerged with spirits intact ( forgive the pun but we did have a few brandies after our excellent dinner) and we wish you luck for 2022. We will be back!
David and Shan.
