Tony's Clayton Reviews from The Last Year
More risotto please...
I went for my Birthday and it was amazing. I have heard so much about Tony's over the years and finally decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed, from the moment I stepped out of the car until I left it was a 5-star experience. I now understand the rave.
The trip back in time to when dining was an event.
A true dining experience unlike any other. This is what fine dining is meant to be. The service is exemplary and the food divine. From the maitre’d to the table captain, Adam, to the bus boy, not a detail was overlooked or missed. The pace of dining is leisurely to allow you to enjoy the food and wine as well as the company.
Disappointing!
The place had changed drastically, since the original owner was alive! The ambience is not the same, the food is far from gourmet, but the prices seems to go good up every month! Servers care only to sell you more expensive dishes and wine and the attitude is snobbish! Will not spend my time or money on this establishment again!
Wow, where do I start? The restaurant is beautiful so
Wow, where do I start? The restaurant is beautiful so that's a positive. Service was so sporadic. I think we had 3 or 4 wait people. Couldn't keep track of who our main person was. Food was so so at best. Tonys salad was bland. Nondescript really. My chicken dish had a lovely sauce, but very dry inside. Too thick of pieces. I was super excited to try the creamed spinach. First off, it was cold because the waiter forgot to bring it and second it had a funky flavor. Not sure what was in it , but not the kind of spinach I am used to. We told the waiter we had a birthday, and there was no offering of a dessert. Any restaurant, fancy or casual that we have ever been to has always presented a birthday dessert. Very disappointing. Overall, great space and mediocre overpriced food.
The best place to celebrate something special.
The only 5 star family owned restaurant in St Louis (I don't count Al's anymore). They have their own unique touches too, the fine dining experience really is unique here. I love how they cook all the food table side. You may see flames when cooking dessert. The seafadt pasta is great. The pasta with clams. The diavola steaks. The scallop appetizers. The extra large shrimp. The huge lobster tails. The beautiful filet mignons. The amazing wine selection, it's the best in the city how could I almost forget that. Really, just give it a try for a special occasion. It really is something special and St. Louis should be proud
Great food, entire staff was top notch.
I had the shrimp and lobster linguine which was fantastic, loved the garlic and portion was spot on. The shrimp appetizer was tasty. But stars of the show were the desserts. Truly enjoyed our time! The bananas flambé was incredible.
The service here is amazing.
There's nothing else like this in St. Louis. It's the only fine dining that isn't a chain and honestly the food is the best I've had anywhere. I don't think it's expensive considering what we got and how good it was. We go here for our anniversary now and it always makes the occasion so memorable. I especially love the tuna carpaccio and the white asparagus salad. We had the seafood pasta which had lots of lobster and a filet mignon that was definitely the best I've ever had. Don't forget dessert, all of it is amazing and some of it is prepared with giant flames tableside. All the food is prepared tableside, it's so much fun to watch. Just generally the best dining experience I've ever had and year after year it's been the best. The owner James is incredibly nice as well. He is so polite and is from St Louis and night even know you the street you grew up on. He also helps prepare the food tableside which is a nice touch. Bonus points : you can tour the kitchen if it's not too busy and it's absolutely gorgeous. Something from a movie - copper pans, chefs working from memory - and the very best part to me is that it is the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen. My hubby works in restaurants and he says it's the most spotless he has ever seen as well. It all looks brand new and like they haven't even used it but they do, all day and night, they just keep it that clean. It's really something special. Oh and they have wheelchair lifts and are completely handicap accessible which for me being paralyzed from the waist down due to a car accident at 22 is really awesome. Lots of places don't do this, they obviously spent a lot of time and money making it accessible for all. Oh and you see the staff knowing guests by their first name. It's really the best place in St. Louis and its family owned. The employees have been there for decades which shows you how great a place it is to work for. Gotta hand it to James, he really takes care of his staff (I even heard they get a nice family style meal before the shift, classic Italian restaurant. It's worth the money. For what you get it actually seems like a good deal. Every year we come here and we have our friends and family going now too. They are hooked, the best way to celebrate a special occasion. Aaron is our go to server, you can ask for him if you want, Gerard will be happy to accommodate. Oh, and if you want something special maybe off menu they will always do it. I'd try to limit that when it's not as busy, buts it's nice that anything you ask for they will do. Try it, it's the best in the entire city
Absolutely the best meal I've ever had.
The steak was cooked perfect, the service was perfect, easily the best I've had, and the whipped cheesecake was heaven. Everyone should go here at least once or for special occasions you want to remember.
I had the absolute worst experience I've ever had at a
I had the absolute worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant...One of the waist staff, Gerard, took a linen napkin, and hit me in the derrière with it. The most unpleasant, unprofessional and inappropriate behavior I have ever experienced! I was flabbergasted and embarrassed by the way he behaved. I will not step foot in there ever again. He should be terminated for his actions.
Sexual harassment from the waitstaff of Tony's,
Sexual harassment from the waitstaff of Tony's, specifically Gerard, is truly unacceptable. The absolute worst experience I've ever had at any restaurant. First, a member of the waitstaff accosted my partner, by whipping a napkin to her derrière. I cannot believe this actually happened. I've previously worked in the restaurant industry for nearly a decade and have never heard nor seen such complete disregard of the customer. Absolute garbage. Second, but less importantly, the food is truly just mediocre at best: halibut was way overcooked, vegetables were swimming in 1/2" of oil. The restaurant itself is far too noisy. You have plenty of choices available to you; choose elsewhere. I can only guess that favorable reviews come from those who judge the quality of their meal by how much they spend for it.
If you're looking for a fine dining experience with good
If you're looking for a fine dining experience with good service then this is the place. If you're looking for a good steak, than I would probably not eat here. There are some garage parking lots near that you can park and walk or you can use there free valet. It's nice inside. Wish there was a little more room by your tables so they can prepare your table-side plates by your table instead of on the ends of the restaurant. No complaints about the drinks & cocktails that were made. Expresso Martini is the best around. Food: scallops were good. I would recommend ravioli-Everyone enjoyed it at our table. Salads were good - Tonys and the Caesar. Linguine shrimp and lobster very good. Now to the steaks. Yes they were prepared exactly how we wanted them. BUT they did not melt in your mouth. So that is why I was disappointed. Bananas, flambé was good. Crème brûlée tasted like it was sitting in the fridge all day. I was borderline in giving this restaurant a three but because of its nice atmosphere, other good food and service, I did give it 4 stars.
Warning: Don’t waste your time or money!
After spending $600 on food, I was told that I was not dressed appropriately to use the downstairs bathroom. This archaic and stupid way of thinking is the reason that this restaurant is trending downward that and the over priced mediocre food. Don’t waste your time here. There are literally 15 better restaurants in Clayton than this place. The owner is a petulant child who clearly does not have the business savvy for running a restaurant.
Terrible management.
We spent $600 and I was told that I wasn't dressed properly to use the downstairs bathroom. Completely ridiculous behavior by the owner of the restaurant. Don't waste your time with overpriced food and garbage management attitude. Bunch of bullies.
Wonderful evening and experience
The food and service was excellent. We were a little late - when I had called in and let them know - they were very gracious and understanding. When we arrived, we were seated right away. The wine list is long and deep. The appetizer and main dishes were succulent. The waiters were attentive without being over bearing. We had a lovely evening. Would recommend.
Been here only once years ago at their former downtown
Been here only once years ago at their former downtown location. This place is well known for being pricy and immaculate in taste and plating. This is one of the most famously luxurious Italian spots in Saint Louis, and the steaks are fantastic.
Rude, slow and inattentive service
We have gone to Tony’s for over 20 years and sadly this will be our last due to slow/rude service and quality of food. We were seated at 7pm. We were not given drink menus (ever) and our appetizers didn’t arrive until 8:45pm. Frankly most had been pre-plated so the wait was inexcusable. While our waiter was reading the specials the manager came over and interrupted and told our waiter to go deal with another table. He didn’t apologize or even try to explain. Our plates sat forever between courses. When our main dishes finally arrived the food just isn’t what it used to be. When the owner came over at the very end of the meal he told my Mom that the food took so long because she ordered the dover sole. There was no explanation or apology given. It’s so sad what was once the gold standard for service in St Louis is not even a shadow of its former self.
Still the Best!! Still the Very Best!!
Thanks very much to all of the people who took care of us as we had a special celebration at Tony’s in Clayton. Donnie (Poco Loco ), Bruce and even the gentleman who kept our water glasses full were so kind and attentive. Chilean Sea bass, beet, salad, and a signature dish of linguine with lobster and shrimp. made our evening complete. The presentation was superb, and the food even better. Please say thank you to the chef, sous chef, and everyone who made this possible. It takes a great deal of work behind the scenes. Lastly, as we were about to leave, the owner came out to thank us for being there. Very classy!
