I saw this place on Yelp and was curious for their gigantic bowl of udon, so of course I had to drag my bf out here for dinner on our first night in Waikiki! The bowl was huge, it was bigger than my whole head. It was yummy and the broth was flavorful! We didn't go for the spicy one because my stomach can't take much spicy food these days but I think it would've been good with some other spicy options! We also got the truffle salmon and it was so good! Overall a fun and good place for dinner!
Be the first to ReplyStill one of my favorite Udon places to go on island.
I finally tried the Hiyashi Uni Udon and I definitely have a new favorite udon dish. As an avid uni lover on a budget, I always appreciate affordable uni dishes that are able to really pack a flavor punch. This is definitely my favorite uni "pasta". Theres lots of different versions from Japanese to Italian. What I like about this one in particularly is you do not have to breakup and mix in the uni to taste it in the sauce. The broth definitely has it flavored in so you get the taste of uni in everything with the topping to split around and make bites certainly a treat. Definitely a good splurge for every once in a while, and bonus with it being a cool udon perfect for a hot day in Hawaii.

4 stars regular. The noodle bowls are huge. The wagyu sushi and blu crab add some me with the noodles is a must do. Agedashi tofu was also delicious. Salmon skin chips not crisp enough.

If you are in the mood for noodles, they have a wide variety and they give you lots of food. My girls had the noodles and I had some sushi and they were all excellent service was great and very helpful and decor and ambience was great.

Located on the 3F of the Royal Hawaiian Center, it's a great spot for adults and kids. They have a wide variety of udon, both cold and hot. You can order the large portion for the same price! There is also a good amount of rolls which I ordered. I just missed the happy hour there so I'll be sure to make it in time next visit. They are very attentive and service is friendly! The only aspect I noticed is that it can get a bit loud in the restaurant but perhaps it was where our table was located as well.

This is my first visit here! I've heard great reviews on this place in Yelp. The restaurant was recently renovated and my adventure walking buddy and I decided to have an early lunch here after our morning walk. The restaurant looks great and large! Tables have a bench and chair combination. There are more spaces in the back. Apparently, large parties may be accommodated. Service was great here. Our order was taken after providing us enough time to look at the huge options in the menus. Our server answered any questions I had and provided recommendations. Our water was refilled continuously and we were checked on during our meal. The combination meal was very filling and the only item I did not find tasty was the broth for the udon. The broth lacked depth and umami. It tasted like shoyu and water. The udon was textured and cooked just right. I loved the chewiness of the thick udon. The spicy tuna sushi was flavorful and fell apart when picked it up with my chopsticks. Maybe I squished it too hard? : ). The cucumber salad was crunchy, fresh and seasoned perfectly. The pricing is reasonable and my meal had a kamaaina discount. Food: 4 out of 5 stars (Broth 2 out of 5 stars) Service: 5 out of 5 stars Ambiance: 4 out of 5 stars

Always wanted to try this place out! We went during the Happy Hour time and they have a special menu where items were 50% off! (TIP: You have to ask for the menu) What a bargain! Thank you so much! We tried the Mentai Kamatama udon, sukiyaki udon, ontama toriten, salmon truffle ponzu, and salmon skin chips. The mentai kamatama udon was my favorite out of the three. Flavorful and creamy! The salmon truffle ponzu had delicious fatty pieces of salmon. But the truffle was like an essence to the whole dish. I've never tried ontama cold. It tastes like eating the cold udon where you dip it into the sauce, but the noodles are inside already. I guess if you like cold udon and don't want to do the hassle of dipping, then it's the dish for you. LOVE the soft egg though. Very tasty and creamy! The sukiyaki udon had so many mushrooms!! What a treat! Delicious pieces of meat! The salmon skin chips were a surprise and a slight disappointment. There were way more pieces of salmon compared to the picture which is awesome! But it was super oily and not all crunchy. Maybe one piece. And the batter is thick and powdery feeling. I wonder if it would be better crispier? We'll have to ask next time. :/ Almost forgot. We had to ask for a spoon and they gave us a large spoon! So comedic lol! But still weird that spoons aren't automatically brought out :/ Not sure if that's just normal there or it was a busy? (Didn't seem too busy, the room was half full :/ )

This is a nice restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center. You can park in the building structure attached to the building and the first hour is validated by the restaurant. They have food choices ranging from noodles, sushi, and donburi dishes. You can get regular or large sizes of some of the dishes without any extra charge. You also have the option of thin or thick udon style noodles. Just be aware that even the regular size noodle dishes are very large.

Went on a Friday at 530pm and seated immediately. Will definitely be back

I wish I had a TsuruTonTan Udon near me!!! I remember going to one in Japan last year so the name rang familiar when I went to Waikiki and saw the name again! I was not feeling too great so a hot bowl of udon was really enticing. Thankfully there was no wait and we came during happy hour. The prices are pretty affordable and they are also part of the coupon booklet found on the streets. We got the tempura instead of the 10% off, but I wish we had just done the 10% off. The tempura was really disappointing, one of the worst ones I've had for sure. This was the only downfall. I feel like solid Japanese restaurants that offer tempura should have solid tempura, but this one did not. The beef udon was DELICIOUS. I ordered a large and the bowl was bigger than the size of my head! They said the price was the same but the noodles are slightly more for a large. The taste was nice and clean. The soup was not salty at all, so it was perfect for me. There's an ok portion of beef, but there could be more... I enjoyed the texture of the noodles, but my partner said it was too soft for him. The Chigae Udon was the hidden gem! The flavors were like a Korean soybean stew mixed with soon dubu soup + udon. It was so packed with flavor, completely opposite of my dish. The spice was great, the depth of flavor, and there was something addicting to it, so it was hard to stop eating haha. We'd highly recommend this dish!! The servers were all nice and pleasant. I would recommend going for happy hour as they have a lot of deals. Would I come back again? Heck yes if I were in the area haha. Now can they please open one in LA? *sigh*

We dined at the restaurant with our family, ordering a selection including kids' meals, Tsurutontan Deluxe Udon, Uni, Ikura & Crab Donburi, and Chicken Karaage. The food was delectable, with chewy noodles and flavorful broth, albeit slightly overcooked. The karaage was deliciously seasoned without being overly salty. However, the uni donburi was a tad disappointing due to the disproportionate amount of rice to the actual uni, crab meat, and ikura. Additionally, the rice placement on the side rather than beneath the toppings was notable. The service was notably swift, though the overall experience was marred by subpar service. Echoing sentiments from other reviews, while the food excels, the demeanor of the greeters and servers leaves much to be desired. Their lack of enthusiasm or engagement was evident, with four servers attending to our table. Despite the diverse menu offering sushi and sashimi alongside udon, the service aspect would deter me from returning.
Be the first to ReplyGot the Tan tan Udon and tried some Nabeyaki udon.
Both had good flavor and the udon noodles were very thick and chewy! However the toppings of the tan tan were a little disappointing, very little ground pork. The waiters were nice and they had comfy booth seating.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is bland and over priced.
The staff gossips about customers right in the front of them making you feel uncomfortable. Jay is the manager and encourages them by acting the same way so it gave Mey the ok to be condescending as you leave. I hope higher up management reads this because they are hurting your business.

Came here for dinner and grabbed two bowls of udon and added a side of sushi (3pcs) for $5 extra. You can choose your noodles to be thick or thin -- we were told thick was the popular choice so that's what we went for. Can choose regular or large size, which cost the same. The noodles were chewy and bouncy, and the huge bowls made it fun.
Be the first to ReplyIf I could give it a negative star I would.
Last night my partner and I were looking at the reviews and this seemed like a great place to sit down have some sake and undo noodles. When we finished ordering and our food arrived we took a bite and we had different experiences. For my duck noodles I had to spit it out and take all the duck aside on a different plate. It was a supper chewy (like gamy) and smelly like in been in the fridge too long almost spoil smell. I have ate from other places duck before and this was the most disgusting taste. Since the noodles and broth tasted good I thought it would be okay to eat that . ( big mistake I had diarrhea and threw up all night) my stomach is still sensitive and what supposed to be a good night ended up with me being sick. For the ambient looking nice it was a huge disappointment, definitely don't recommend it specially if you don't want to spend it with your ass on the toilet and a bucket on your hand throwing up.

The udon bowls are massive here, and we were told they are all large sizes with extra udons if you prefer. I got the truffle and crab cream and hubby got the sukiyaki. Hubby is normally not an udon fan due to the texture, but the fact that you can order THIN udon here made him super happy! We both slurp everything up soon after. And because our eyes are always bigger than our stomach, we also added the promo of the $5 shrimp tempura rolls, a negi toro roll, and the salmon crab rolls. Overall, I enjoyed the ubon a lot more than the rolls. The service is also immaculate here. We had to switch tables after we ordered due to a mishap with their reservation, and the manager kindly comp us the Mango Delight and the Asian Pear Mojito. Thank you so much for the generous gesture! Why would you wait in that long line at Maragume, when this delicious restaurant is located on the 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

The food was very authentic Japan style, while the service was NOT. There were a lot selections of noodles and sushies with pictures on the menu. I ordered some noodles for my wife and my kids. While I was looking for the item I wanted to order for mysel, the waiter was out of patience and kept asking me if there was anything else I would order. He asked for a few times while I told him clearly that I wanted to order a few more. I felt being pushed a lot. I won't say it was rude, but definitely NOT Japan's service attitude! It was around 1:30pm, not their busiest hour.

Very helpful and courteous staff, and a nice atmosphere to hangout with friends.

Tan tan noodles are our favorite- spicy but delicious! I recommend getting two different kind of soups and sharing some of the tan tan noodle broth- the bowls are huge! Huge! So good, and the margarita was refreshing!! Go early, gets packed but they have great service too

Biggest udon noodle bowls in town! I had a rocky start with this place, but it turned out to be really good. Online says happy hour ends at 6pm, I arrive at 5:30pm to find that the printed menus say happy hour ends at 5:30pm. Bummer, but I still ordered some nudes and a side or two. Then, come 5:55pm, the server comes by and says last call for happy hour. I was like, WTH, the menu says HH ends at 5:30pm. She told me the hostess was supposed to mention to me that it was until 6pm. It's fine, I got HH prices for the things I ordered, however, I would have ordered differently had I of known that earlier. Small things like this give me bad vibes.Anyway, the HH incident did not stop me from returning a second time. Both times I orderd Tsurutontan Deluxe, large size. The large size is the correct size for me (I'm a fat kid). It was huge! Lots of udon noodles (you can choose fat or skinny udon nudes) and other goodies (chicken, beef, tempura, wakame, etc.). If I get it again and remember, I would ask for the tempura on the side. I am one of those people that does not like my tempura in the broth getting soggy. #teamcrunchytempura! I also got the shishito peppers (I love those), however, these weren't the best ones I've had. They needed more sauce/seasoning. The ribeye was tasty, served on a sizzling platter and the Lava Roll susui was very good (just the right amout of spice in the sauce). On my first visit I also had the Truffle & Crab Cream Udon. It was good but heavy. Good for sharing, but probably too rich and creamy to eat alone.Tip for Kamaaina: the restaurant validates parking for 1 hour. If you spend over $10, take your receipt to the Royal Hawaii Shopping Center guest services on the first floor by the center stage and show your local ID and receipt. They will give you an additional 2 hours of parking validation. This will save you a few bucks and possibly allow you to go over to the next door hotel and check out some sand sculptures or explore a little in Waikiki.

My friends and I were in Hawaii during the last week of February to early March. We came to tsurutontan because I thought Muragame was a bit plain for my taste. Personally I'm glad I did.The interior is modern and clean with plenty of tables and space. Our waiter was very quick and down to business but with polite mannerism. I apologize for spilling the soy sauce. He noticed quickly and provided a lot of napkins.I ordered the sesame jigae one day and the hot and sour the next and the cucumber salad.Big fan of the cucumber salad especially when I'm looking for something refreshing and flavorful as a break from the heavier foods in Hawaii.I highly recommend the sesame jigae for those looking for intense flavors that are more salty, savory. The hot and sour was a mixed experience for me. The soup was so thick it came off more like a sauce. The flavor was not intense or vinegary enough to balance the thickness so it came off super heavy. Personally would recommend trying other bowls over the hot and sour.Overall a great experience. I think the you really have to know what you want and what to order on the menu to get the most out of the experience. I don't think all udon dishes have been perfected but can be overlooked as personal preference. I'd come back to try the spicy tan tan the next time I'm around.
Be the first to ReplyWent there for my birthday and the food was yummy.
They give big portions and the kamaina discount makes it even better. The service was good and the place was pretty casual. Next I have to try the happy hour.
