Don't waste your money unless you like to watch employees complain about customers
The food was very bland and when I asked Mey to be moved to another seat because they had me right next to their work station which was very loud. They all started gossiping to all the employees. Jay the manager even came up and started to join in on the games which I think is where they learned all of it.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre in every way
Everything was at best mediocre The greeters seemed preoccupied The waitress was very sweet but not knowledgeable We ordered hot and we're told it is not available and offered hot water A Japanese restaurant and no tea should have been a warning Many tables offered the cucumber appetizer so we tried i A large cut flavorless cucumber lacking the sweetness and vinegary taste of better ones The udon appeared before the appetizers and was ok There were several clumps of noodles Sukiyaki and Soyu udon broth was not cooked long enough A very disappointing meal
Be the first to ReplyIs there a second chance to try
I should rate 4 instead of 3 since we experienced a service when just got into the restaurant, it was not full then the lady took us to a table right at the rest room! Why? So we asked her if there’s another table and off course yes The waiter was very nice and polite Our drink and food were good and the portion of udon were so much even we didn’t upgrade for more udon as the waiter had offered us Finally we must have 2 bowl for to go And the next day one went bad even we put 2/3 of the udon in a to go bowl before eating we had to trash it The other one was not much left but it was good so we took it and it was still good the next day Don’t know if we want to go back since it was our first time and it’s pricey too There are at least 5 others restaurants in the same shopping center where we kept coming back
Be the first to ReplyCan get thin noodles
If you're a soup noodle fan, but prefer thin noodles, you can order thin noodle udon here. We ordered the ikura oroshi udon, mine with an additional ontama. The broth was flavourful, and the portion good. Would come back to try other variations.
Be the first to ReplyVery average!
This is a restaurant for people who want broth based food and sushi. If you are not into that , don’t go there. We managed to find something that we could eat and it was really basic and average .
Be the first to ReplyGet your Udon and Sushi on!
Great atmosphere and ambiance! I like that it is lighted but not too bright. Quick service! Had the Aburi sushi and it was tasty! Family had Udon! Would recommend to visit!
Be the first to ReplyGood recommendation for Udon Soup
We had nice dinner with sushi (Lava) and Udon Soup. Both were good and we can recommend the place. But it is quite noisy in the background. For Waikiki restaurants quite fair prices
Be the first to ReplyGreat udon and other dishes
Was able to walk in on a weekend afternoon. Bustling but still great service. Much better than the ones in NYC, and on par with the location in Tokyo Ginza
Be the first to ReplyGood dinner option
udon noodles were good! food came out pretty quick though - but the service itself for seating, getting bills was a bit slow. Other than that, decent experience. Clean place, friendly staff. There were a lot of families dining in. Big restaurant with many seating options.
Be the first to ReplyA Delightful Surprise!
On a night we had no reservations, we took a chance and waited for a table at Tsurutontan, located at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. We were seated fairly quickly. We looked around and didn't want to order the huge udon bowls so we opted to order from their sushi and sashimi menu. Much to our surprise and delight, their Hamachi Carpaccio and Ahi Sashimi were so fresh and truly amazing... probably one of the best we ever had (and we've eaten at some of the top restaurants in Hawaii)! The service was equally as great!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food and knowledgeable staff
We saw Tsuru Ton Tan's good reviews (including the recommendation in Eater) and I'm so glad we tried it! I have some dietary restrictions that make Japanese food difficult and I was nervous because the menu doesn't say much about ingredients in the udon, but our waiter was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and was able to help point us to items that would work as well as make suggestions for substitutions. It was easy and made the process of picking a dish fun. I got the sizzling sukiyaki udon, my partner got the hot and sour udon, and they were (1) both delicious and (2) about as different as two dishes can be and both have noodles in them. The sizzling sukiyaki udon was sweet and savory, with crunchy-chewy bits where the udon had fried against the hot stone bowl. It was delightful, highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyOK place for sushi in Royal hawaiian Center
We walked by this place while shopping at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. The menu looked extensive and they listed both regular and happy hour prices. (The HH price is around $2~~ cheaper than regular price.) We decided to try it during their happy hour. The hostess insisted on seating us in the busier area of the restaurant and we asked for a table that was more social distant. She said no and insisted we sit right next to a lot of other patrons. Well, we finally got a table that was more socially distant in the less busy side of the restaurant. We then ordered drinks while deciding on what to eat. We ordered the shishito peppers, uni and tempura. The uni was some of the biggest uni I have seen – you got two pieces but they were huge. The mixed tempura was cold and soggy – what a disappointment! I sent it back and they brought out a freshly made dish. Glad we tried it but would probably not return.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place!
I typically don’t frequent this type of place, but we were meeting friends there. I stuck to guns there and ordered the garlic shrimp and fries. Boy had sirloin steak, girl had sushi, and wife had Udon Noodles with cream sauce. The food was delicious. I have never had service that good anywhere! Take your money, but you won’t regret it.
Be the first to ReplyFresh and friendly without the fuss
This casual eatery is located in a “food court “setting, one floor up and all enclosed but mall like in experience. Clearly popular with tourists as well as locals, we were fortunate to get a table just walking up.
Prices are Honolulu typical, but a bargain considering surrounding offerings. The food is fabulous in short, and we left both full and satisfied. We were seated and served immediately, although our order did come in dribs and drabs. My daughter ordered beef udon noodle soup which came in a clay bowl twice the size of her head— the beef was tender and surprisingly flavorful given that it is swimming in broth. The noodles are thick, yet firm and absolutely delicious— the whole ensemble impressed all three of us, and there was a ton left over to bring back.
All three rolls were comprised of visually pleasing, fresh ingredients that more than satisfied in both amount and in taste. We especially enjoyed the lava roll although the basic tuna scallion roll and the specialty spicy tuna roll were exceptional as well.
In a venue where there are many choices, this definitely was a good one to choose
Poor Quality Food
Not much else to add beyond the title. Stopped in here to grab a quick meal. Ordered two-three sushi rolls. They were poor quality, they were very dry, and they were room temperature. It felt like they were made 4 hours ago and just kept sitting out. The food was gross. Service was not great either.
Be the first to ReplyGargantuan bowls of udon
I've been to their location in New York so I was stoked to find out there's also one in Waikiki. Made reservations right away and I suggest you do the same since the Royal Hawaiian Center is never without crowds.
Known for their gargantuan bowls of udon with the free option to upgrade to large, TsuruTonTan offers a myriad of soup bases to choose from. I was not impressed with their Uni Cream Udon which I had in their Big Apple branch so I wanted to try something different here. Enter Truffle and Crab Cream Udon. It was pleasantly unique but was trumped by the TanTan Udon. The latter has more depth in flavor plus some spice to boot. Want to keep it safe? Their Beef Udon would be your best bet with a clear dashi broth base topped with beef shavings. Noodle wise, texture and bounce was spot-on.
If anything, I would steer clear from their sushi but do ask your server if they have any yuzu-based cocktail because that, I wouldn’t miss.

Be the first to ReplyClean, friendly and quick.
The restaurant is on 3rd floor in the Royal Hawaiian. It has a large seating area. The service was very friendly and quick. Had the cold Uni udon and the duck udon. The flavours were good. However we did prefer Marukame better. But Tsurutontan does have way more variety.
