Let me preface this by saying I used to love Ugly Baby! I have been a few times over the years and really enjoyed the authenticity and spice of the dishes. That said, upon my most recent visit, service left a lot to be desired. My partner and I ordered a beer along with 3 dishes - we waited over 45 minutes, and still no dishes were brought to our table... Despite this, tables surrounding us who had ordered the same/similar dishes after us received their food before we did. Our waitress didn't have an explanation as to why our food continued to be delayed, or how much longer it would take. All in all, it was a really disappointing experience as we were really looking forward to a deliciously spicy meal.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was recommended by my cousin who is a spice
This place was recommended by my cousin who is a spice lover. I should've known it's a small place with loud music, but it was a pretty fun atmosphere. Tables were a bit small and on top of each other, but we sat at the bar. I didn't read before, but I read them. I see would've been warned about some of the things I ran into I'm a vegetarian and there's nothing on the menu so I asked and they said they could make a veggie stirfry which sounded very lame fried rice could have fried rice and they said no about a couple things and gotta know as well I was already really hate it on this place, but I got to admit the veggie stirfry was really good very spicy and flavorful. I see other people saying that they put fish oil in the dishes, which I did not ask about that is pretty cool if that's true, I don't care so much about it, but I imagine other vegetarians would feel very violated. Also, I saw another person post about being told to leave and that happened to us after paying the bill like a minute later we were told leave prices are also pretty expensive, like $30-$40 per plate seemed very high to me but the dishes look pretty fancy definitely the menu needs some pad Thai.

Heard about how great this place is, glad to finally have tried it. Honestly I had a great meal here, though we only ordered two things. I think my critique is that on Friday at 7pm, they had already sold out of at least 4 or 5 items off the menu. Luckily the menu is large enough where that wasn't too bad, but I was excited to try some of the things that were sold out. Regardless - SEA BREAM - this was really tender, and the topping really added a texture that was super satisfying. The crisp outer skin provided a nice texture too. Would def recommend. CHICKEN CURRY - the chicken thigh in this was extremely tender, and it had a nice heat running throughout it but I was expecting it to be hotter surprisingly! The curry was tasty, the rice was fluffy - I was pleased. I like that the menu has a lot of items that aren't typical for Thai restaurants which speaks to authenticity. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable on the menu. Because of how popular this place is, you may be ushered out of your table soon after paying.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful Thai style dinner here.
The staff was very good about explaining the different levels of spicy hotness and understood that their definition or medium would equate to hot for some people. The waitstaff was efficient and friendly. However, be aware that you are allowed one opportunity to order only. In other words, don't get two dishes to share if you think you might need three. Our waiter also did a good job explaining the portion sizes of the different dishes. All and all a very pleasant dining experience in a casual and comfortable environment.
Be the first to ReplyI thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining here! The food
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining here! The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. When we arrived around 9PM on a Saturday, many of the popular dishes were sold out however our waiter did a fantastic job at describing the other dishes that were available. Our waters were consistently refilled and the wait for our dishes to come out was not too long. The ambiance was a little questioning as hard rock music was blaring throughout the restaurant, which took away a little from the overall experience. Overall, the food, customer service, and experience was wonderful!

I recently visited Ugly Baby with a friend and had quite the experience. This was a Thai food experience like no other - it definitely left an impression! The quality of food and attention to detail was superb. We were very pleased with the taste of the food - the flavours were amazing, the presentation was beautiful, and we could tell there was quite a lot of preparation that went into the dishes. The service was great and they were very attentive throughout our experience. They ensured they recommended certain dishes based on our comfort with spice and the ordering process was a nice conversation with our server. However, I will say that it was a spicy experience! Although there are dishes with different spice levels, this is definitely something to note. The restaurant was very cute, but at times it was a sensory overload that wasn't super cohesive - loud rock music, many vibrant colours, really yummy aromas, and super amazing spicy tastes. The only thing that was a little bit disappointing was that they sold out of about 6-7 dishes by the time we got there (about 9pm) which we were really excited to try - my recommendation would be to go earlier, although you may have to wait a little bit longer. Overall, I would go back and definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyUgly Baby has been on my list but they do not take
Ugly Baby has been on my list but they do not take reservations and only walk-ins (full party has to be there). We went on a Thursday night at 7pm and waited 30 minutes. The restaurant is so color and they have seasonal menus. The waiter strongly recommended not ordering their very spicy dishes for our first time there but I wish he hadn't so we could try their spicy food. Their mild / medium dishes were not spicy at all to me, as someone who love spicy food. The food is good and the wait isn't bad if the weather outside is decent while standing outside.
Be the first to ReplyI see a lot of negative reviews here about how the food was
I see a lot of negative reviews here about how the food was too spicy. Ugly Baby is synonymous with spice, but they take lots of care to make sure it can be an enjoyable experience for all spice tolerances. There are plenty of mild options on the menu, the servers warn you extensively beforehand on the spice level before ordering (even suggesting dish combinations for balanced spice levels), they provide unlimited rice to help combat the spice, and they are also very attentive with water refills. All this to say, it's not the restaurant's fault if you ignore all the disclaimers and then realize that you're not actually up to the challenge. Anyways, Ugly Baby is walk-in only with a small number of tables and very popular, so I would strongly recommend coming right at their 5pm opening time. Unfortunately, the earliest I could come was around 6pm on a Saturday, and already they were sold out of all of their spiciest dishes (the ones with an emoji on the menu). In order of preference, we got the the fried sea bream with turmeric and the tay ho (pork belly with morning glory and lime curry). The sea bream is not spicy at all so a perfect choice for milder palettes. I love whole fish dishes and this one was no exception, and the fried exterior and turmeric bits added a nice crunch. The tay ho was really good as well, spicy for sure but not punishingly so. I loved the acidity of the lime but would've preferred more pork or morning glory. They have a rotating menu so there's no shortage of dishes to try. I definitely plan to come back and risk it all for one of their emoji dishes!

Ok friends, I really wanted to love this place - as a big Thai food fan - but it fell short for me. There was a line out the door at 5pm when they open, and they only let you sit down when your entire party is there. Came with a group of 6 and split a bunch of their dishes. We tried chicken thighs, ribs, this beef with kiwi dish, Khao soi, and a fish curry. I normally eat spicy foods just fine, but unfortunately, I was not prepared for the spice level here! My boyfriend was especially unprepared and even got a bad case of gastritis afterwards. Maybe it was an off day, as they do have a seasonal menu, but I probably won't be back!
Be the first to ReplyWarning this place will make you cry like an ugly baby!
Warning this place will make you cry like an ugly baby! Their spice level should not be taken lightly! I could only do 1 level, and I was dying. You can really taste how authentic the thai dishes were. This is not your typical pad thai restaurant. Honorable mentions were: - Chrysanthemum tea (addicted, ordered around 3) - Beef shank panang - sparerib tips and pork hock - durian sticky rice dessert: it was a warm durian with condensed milk Disclaimer: they do not take reservations, space is very small (expect a wait), and you have to order everything the first time due to the time constraint
Be the first to ReplyIt's goods but it's hectic inside.
A lot of things goes in in here and a lot of food comes out. The food is great super tangy, sweet and spicy. The flavors are definitely very unique. The price was definitely on the pricier side but for the portion it's quite large. I definitely tasted the culture and the authenticity was great. Do keep in mind some items do run out during the day so arriving early is a bonus. When I went they were missing a few dishes that I wanted to try but had to order something else cause it was out. 8/10 would come here for the flavor and the urge to try more things but for the wait and the price I might have to consider it. Also, the menu changes from time to time which is great. Can really try other things if you want.

The food was AMAZING! So spicy but in a good way, even the non-spicy foods were a bit spicy. The beef shank curry was my favorite, it had so much flavor and melted in your mouth. The tiger shrimp curry was delicious, had densely flavored omelette chunks as well, and was basically in a tom yum soup. So lucky we got seating! Would definitely come back. Service was also amazing, everyone was so kind, friendly, and attentive.

Amazing experience here! The food was excellent and the service was amazing. Our orders were taken immediately and food came out very quickly. The waitstaff were so kind and attentive. There was a table of two next to us that got in an argument with the waiter because it seemed like they were there for awhile and the waiter was trying to get them to wrap up (they weren't eating anymore), as they did for the table before us so we could sit. The waiter handled the situation beautifully even though this couple was acting quite rude/entitled. Love to see a place that stands up for their other customers and themselves. Will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyFirst, it's fairly difficult to get a reservation at Ugly
First, it's fairly difficult to get a reservation at Ugly Baby because it's so popular (and rightfully so). If you're interested in seeing what all of the hype is about, I'd recommend booking in advance or ordering takeout during the early afternoon hours - I stopped by once in the evening and they were so busy they couldn't accommodate a to-go meal. This time around, I had a reservation, and although my friend and I had to wait a few minutes to be seated upon our arrival, the service thereafter was relatively quick. The restaurant offers an extensive beer and wine list, as well as a zesty Yuzu Ginger cider. The menu only features a single vegan option, and fortunately it did not disappoint. The Kang Kluay, a yellow curry with kabocha squash and banana, wasn't very spicy, but it didn't have to be, because its flavor was great. The banana chunks somewhat resembled potatoes in taste and texture, likely because they absorbed the curry and eliminated the fruit's sweetness. The kabocha squash pieces were much smaller and didn't make much of an impression, but the basil leaves made it feel like more of a traditional curry. It would be nice if Ugly Baby had more vegetarian and vegan-friendly items on their menu, but the banana curry was so unique that I wouldn't mind eating it again in the future.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome authentic Thai.
Always changing menu of the freshest ingredients. But, you better be ready for the heat, I'm talking real heat. You will be leaking. Hard to get into make your reservations in advance.
Be the first to ReplyJust had dinner there and front guy was so rude.
I made a reservation for 3 at 5:15 pm. I walked in at 5:20 and they sat us at the counter for 3 people. Which doesn't make sense for 3 people and it didn't say during time of reservation. I asked why we couldn't sit at a table? The guy said because I was late..... by 5 minutes? He then proceeded to show me his phone. It said 5:22. And told me we were 10 minutes late and was nasty about it. Bro. That's 7 minutes, not 10 minute. That includes the 2 minutes of you being nasty to me. Don't be dramatic and there's a 15 minute standard grace period for most restaurants. No meal is worth that attitude.
Be the first to Reply- Panang beef: Overly sweetened.
I like the cooking but the seasoning was off- Fried fish: Well fired though it should have been served with some seafood sauce or some fish sauce- Nam tok beef & tripe: The seasoning was awesome, and I like the spiciness and the pla ra flavor, but the steak was dull. It should have been either cooked medium-rare or just really well-grilled like typical Thai style. The better dish of the night was Gang Som which was yummy but not enough to carry the whole dinner.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite restaurants period! If you love spicy
One of my favorite restaurants period! If you love spicy Thai food you will love Ugly Baby. I love everything I've tried. Its amazing how you can eat a certain dish and it's so spicy, the you try another dish and it's also spicy, but a different kind of spice, then another dish which hits even more differently than the others. It's an incredible scaffolded spice journey I've been lucky enough to experience a few times. The service is great and the vibe and fun and energizing. There is usually a line of folks waiting and every table is usually full for good reason. I would definitely recommend calling ahead and making a reservation. You can also order for pickup and delivery.

Quality & unique food but cringe-worthily hipster & bare bones (despite still charging $25+ per dish). After 1.5 hour wait, we were seated at a "shared table." This was a small 4 person table crushed into a corner that could barely fit 6 petite humans - the couple next to us needed to get out of their seats for us to exit and go to the bathroom (refer to photo). They had an extensive beer menu but ironically didn't carry any Thai beer (or any cocktails) - I guess it's a vibe? Beer arrived in cans with no glass (also part of vibe). My plate came dirty. Food was unique (they pride themselves on extremely spicy unique dishes) but given bare bones atmosphere was not worth it. Also weirdly no appetizers (like I said, bare-bones). Soothr prices without the service or atmosphere - don't recommend the trip.
Be the first to ReplyUgly baby is so hard to get a reservation at but I was able
Ugly baby is so hard to get a reservation at but I was able to finally go. The food was incredible. I understand why it's always packed. The dishes were quite spicy so if they tell you it's spicy, they mean it. With their current menu, there was only one vegetarian/vegan option but I loved it. The staff were all so friendly and nice/bubbly. Loved the energy & the bright decor scheme of orange/yellow! Cute, small & cozy!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is very authentic, spicy, and delicious.
Across dishes, they really know how to cook meat perfectly. My favorite was that panaang curry, savory, perfect level of spice, and the beef was so good. We got the tom yum with pig tails, which was sour, spicy and the meat was so fall-off-the-bone tender. The five-spice pork belly had amazingly well-rendered fat. The sirloin and triple salad was the spiciest dish we got but the fresh vegetables were great to tame the heat. The place is pretty small and the atmosphere is kind of loud and chaotic. They also ran out of four dishes in the winter menu by the time of our reservations, 7:45. The service is excellent.
Be the first to ReplyCalled to get a walk in and they were able to squeeze me
Called to get a walk in and they were able to squeeze me and a friend for 915. Worth the wait. Beautiful eclectic setting, love the colors, the tightness, the plates. But the food, oh my. Make sure you load up on tums for prophylaxis. Thankfully the staff recommended different levels of spice for our dishes. The fish (no spice) was so crispy, mild in a very good way. This was my favorite dish and would totally get again.Next level up was the tiger shrimp with curry and egg. Egg was absorbed so well the curry and was a good step up in spice. But whoa boy the beef and tripe salad, that first bite was exquisite but painful. It's good that you can't eat too much, but you want to. Cucumbers for cooling is a must. I had to go back and finish the fish while I could still taste haha. But when I finally went back for round 2, the spice was more manageable - must have burned off some taste buds.I will definitely be back, so many dishes to try, great staff, chill environment, great selection of drinks. And definitely need to build up that spice tolerance
Be the first to ReplyBooked well in advance, so was really excited to try Ugly
Booked well in advance, so was really excited to try Ugly Baby, which I had walked by several times. We were a bit intimidated by the warnings of spiciness, so landed on the five spice pork belly, parang curry, and the jungle curry. The Pork Belly was cooked perfectly with a deliciously warm sauce that was perfect for cutting the heat from the rest of the meal. Penang curry was also a hit and not overly spicy, but the jungle curry was not our favorite. The service was super friendly and helpful! Overall, really appreciated the divergence from the standard NYC Thai menu and would definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplyFirst visit made me a fan for life.
We ordered a modest two dishes, Spare Ribs and Curried Rice, and were prepared for heat. The flavors were perfectly balanced salt, sweet, acid and a "hurts so good" heat. The sweet, cooling greens cucumbers, string beans, and lettuce were fun to munch on and the rice is all-you-can-eat!We sat at the bar facing the kitchen, and the staff gave us fair Scoville warning and recommended 2-3 dishes for two people. There drink menu is exciting and extensive - I'll definitely be back to explore more.
Be the first to ReplyDisclaimer: I hate super duper SPICY food and this place
Disclaimer: I hate super duper SPICY food and this place serves up five alarm bells level spicy! With that said, I wrote a review on Somtum Der (East Village) and gave them an extremely low rating because I spent the whole night and entire next day running to my toilet and nothing can erase that brutal memory. The good thing that came out of eating at Somtum Der is that I have a good baseline how spicy authentic Thai food can be. Ugly Baby serves really authentic Thai dishes- the kind of dishes you can neither spell nor pronounce, but look amazing on Instagram. After reading pages and pages of reviews of how spicy the dishes are, I prepared myself by taking 2 Imodium pills and making sure I had a big glass of Thai iced tea near me at all time during the meal.I first stumbled here when a friend and I stumbled across this place on Yelp. We decided to walk the 30 minutes from Downtown Brooklyn to Carroll Gardens and take our chances as walk-ins. Big mistake. This place is small, small, small. Upon walking in, we were immediately told that all the tables were reserved for the rest of the night. This was on a Sunday night. Seeing how popular this place was, I decided to make a reservation online a week in advance (the earliest you can book a table) and place your orders. Ok, this is the first time I've ever had to pre-order dishes a week in advance for a restaurant in NYC. But when in Rome, do as the Romans...For a party of two, we ordered the following:Khoong Muk Kai Kem/shrimp, squid, and salted egg yolk ($25) This was my favorite because I love seafood and it wasn't overly spicy. Kao Tod Nam Klook/curried rice, pork skin, peanut and ginger ($22): This was a very large plate of food. It wasn't my favorite, but also wasn't bad either. There were raw vegetables (string beans, cucumbers) that helped cool the palette, but I didn't think the flavors were particularly interesting. I wouldn't order this again.Tom Som Pla Kra Pong/red snapper in ginger and tamarind broth ($32) This was my second favorite dish because the broth was a gentle balance between sour and spicy and broke up a lot of the spice from the other dishes.Hor Mok Pu/steamed crab on banana leaf and coconut ($30) This was the spiciest dish, which I didn't enjoy. I also thought the taste of the steamed crab was off/not great/not to my liking. The texture was like of a paste instead of actual crab meat. There were also thinly-sliced red peppers sprinkled over the steamed crab which I avoided like the plague. My friend bravely ate them and I saw the regret in the aftermath. I would not order this again. Overall, it was a lovely meal (especially coming in knowing what you're getting into and being able to manage those expectations). My friend and I were initially seated at the bar which wasn't ideal because I hate sitting on bar stools. But, sitting at the bar was still nice because you have a full open view of the kitchen and the nice family that cooks the food. We were shortly moved to a table at the front of the restaurant which was much better. The family that runs the restaurant was personable and made us feel very welcome while offering suggestions from their extensive beer and beverage list. The ambience is also worth noting as super eclectic and vibrant- a lot of bright colors. I would recommend coming here at least once. Book early and come with an open mind. Next time you're craving Thai food, ditch the Pad Thai, and checkout this Brooklyn gem.
