🙂 4/5 - Although I live in Los Angeles, my wife and I have been

Although I live in Los Angeles, my wife and I have been coming to the Union Square Cafe for decades now at their various locations, always enjoying its excellent food and service. I accordingly recommended the restaurant to my 39 year old daughter, also a Los Angeles resident, for a business dinner she was having with some NY associates. Mt daughter had booked a table for five (their party) almost a month prior to that night but when they arrived were told that the only available table seated four. They rightly refused to be seated until a table for their entire party could be arranged which, by the way, took less than five minutes. Clearly there was a table available all along but no biggie...yet. After they were seated the hostess came over to the table and told them they had to leave the restaurant immediately because one of the gentlemen in the party (a 70 year old lawyer) had used a "terrible" word (so bad she cold not repeat it) when talking to another host about getting the table they had actually booked. After getting the manager to straighten the situation out they were advised that the word this gentleman had used was "sissy.' So, first of all, it was the host who was, instead of being even remotely apologetic for denying them the table they had booked, the rude one. Secondly, knowing this gentleman, if he was going to curse out the host to begin with "sissy" is hardly the word he would have used (didn't that work go out in the ninth grade). When my daughter related this story to me I frankly was not surprised because two nights prior my wife and I got stuck in traffic, called the restaurant to tell them it was possible we would be, literally, 5 to 10 minutes late, and were rudely, perhaps by this same hostess, told the table could not be held (fortunately we made it in time). I was quite frankly shocked by this hostess's attitude. Your food is great, which is why we keep coming back, but you need to train your staff properly and get rid of those who don't know how to exercise simple courtesies toward paying customers.
