Landed in a noisy Brixton station at 9pm Friday night with a grumbling tummy. Couldn't make up my mind about where to eat, but had heard of Upstairs. Quick call and I was on the back of my bicycle while He cycled-up past Tesco's and Lidle's and after nearly falling off and getting a rack shape bruise, we were there . . phew!Left our bike in the back yard as we were ushered up into the Gastranomic wonderland that upstairs is. Everyone there makes you feel so at home. Bar on the first floor- too hungry for a glass, we ask to see the menu so we can choose a bottle to go with our meal, guess the staff could hear my tummy rumbling as they quickly ushered me up to second floor and our table was ready. They didn't have the first wine we chose- a Chilean white- tried to offer me a French SB instead, but I am a shameful south American affociondo when it comes to wine, so he suggested this beautiful Argeninian white which tasted like watermelon, and I was happy. Then came the food, we could have done the tasting menu for around £38 each, but as we always share our food we didn't bother. 2 courses for £25. menu reassuringly simple - 3 choices fish, meat or veg!Shared the mackerel and fennel starter - beautiful, perfectly cooked, amazing presentation. Then the mains, he got the Stone Bass fish, I got chicken pot au fille. both delicious, both completely different - swapped about 4 times. obv small portions as this is French gastro.Puds was honeycomb ice cream with marshmello so so.I had to drink most of the wine as he was driving.Despite the price, I will definitely be back here, it's so lovely to have this kind of place hidden like a gem in south London. Hey next time I want the tasting menu, and will try not to drink so much wine, so I can actually savor the food, but even with all the wine, this place and its food is unforgettable.
