Food is incredible and service is well trained, attentive, and very helpful. Greens are a can't miss, corn bread phenomenal, and gumbo is at the very top of any I have ever had.
The vibe is good.
The food is pricey but worth it. I've been there twice and had salmon both times. It is very good. The service was excellent. The overall experience was outstanding

Everything was amazing! One of the things we loved was how our waiter took our order and customized how everything would be served to make sure we had a full experience. He made some amazing recommendations, and we enjoyed every dish. We also loved the ambiance. Not to mention, we were 20 mins late for our reservation and the host was extremely accommodating. There are some items we want to try so we will definitely be back!
The short ribs were divine but the pork chop was only ok.
Loved the atmosphere and the service.
Ooowwweeee what a hit! I mean I didn't expect anything less
Ooowwweeee what a hit! I mean I didn't expect anything less from a James Beard award winning chef! Here's a little rundown of the things I ordered. Fried green tomatoes - cornmeal crusted coating. The perfect bite. There was a crunch and then you got into the tomato. The sauce brought the creaminess, but the addition of the shrimp took it to another level for me. The shrimp were plump and gave a slight seafood flavor that brought it home. The best starter! The greens are delicious and I make greens every week. I'm trying to figure out what that flavor is. Maybe apple cider vinegar? Sugar? Truly balances the bitterness of the collards. Either way, I truly enjoyed and so did my baby girl. She ate a plate full and wanted more. This cornbread is superior to any other cornbread. Just order it. Full stop!! Buttery, moist. We should've ordered 2. The pork steak is so tender. I didn't know what to expect but wow. The outside is crispy, almost like grilled and the sauce is not too sweet. A very balanced bbq sauce. The smothered red cabbage brings an earthy element to the dish too. I'm very happy I stepped outside of my comfort zone and ordered. Finally, I had the scallops and was blown away. I'm normally not a scallops girly! The scallops had the perfect sear and a grilled char with the black eyed pea carrot medley there was a hit of spice and once I added a bite of the charred broccoli - I felt like I was in heaven. Every dish had a lot of flavors happening at once and it was so good. I mean incredible. Can't say enough good things about this place. But also want to note how kind the people were. I don't know if he was the manager or what, but he saw we had our toddler at the table and made us feel so welcomed. I appreciated that because sometimes it feels like you're not supposed to take your kids to restaurants. So thank you to him and the server who also shared that he has kids. I will be back soon!

"I had a wonderful dining experience at Virtue! The southern fish was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. The macaroni was creamy and flavorful, the ultimate comfort food. The atmosphere at Virtue was cozy and welcoming, with a charming southern flair. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive. The attention to detail in both the food and the decor was evident, creating a memorable dining experience. I highly recommend Virtue to anyone looking for delicious southern cuisine in a welcoming environment. It's the perfect place to enjoy a comforting meal with friends and family. Will be coming back!
I have had Virtue on my list for a couple years that I need
I have had Virtue on my list for a couple years that I need to try this restaurant, and I am so glad I finally was able to. Everything you've heard about this restaurant is true: amazing food, fine American southern cuisine, etc. I have to say, I wanted to try everything on the menu because it all sounded delicious and wasn't just another Chicago steakhouse. Virtue is different than most of the well known restaurants you hear about. The biscuits had a honey drizzle on top which I wished had a little more. I like a good honey sweetness of my biscuits and I feel like it didn't have too much, but the biscuits were still a must try! I had to order the blackened catfish to try some southern cuisine. The catfish was cooked beautifully, seasoned very well where it had a little spicy but not too spicy. This dish definitely gave it the southern vibe with the rice and carrots. All a great combination, especially for the rice to soak in the flavors from the catfish. My friend ordered the Short Rib and it just sliced right off as you cut a piece. The creamed spinach and potatoes gave it a nice touch as they were creamy and there to soak up the sauce from the short rib. We had to try the Mac & cheese because it's a southern cuisine classic and who doesn't love Mac and cheese. The top layer of toasted cheese on top just makes the Mac and cheese great with every bite. You can never go wrong with this side dish. The staff were all great, always checking in on us and answering any questions we had. They were very attentive and came to us quickly if we ever needed anything. Everything was great to eat and the portions were large where I had leftovers to take home except for the biscuits. I cannot wait to come here and try some more of their menu.

I've been waiting to dine at Virtue for awhile-finally my hubby and I decided that we don't have to wait for a special occasion- we can make date night a special occasion. The ambiance is cozy and chill-low lighting, art everywhere and an interesting touch-tobacco baskets line the ceiling in the dining room, providing an interesting textural feature to the decor. The service was very attentive, even though we were given a carafe of water, our glasses never went below half full without someone refilling them. We had the biscuits and gumbo to start-both were delicious. The gumbo tastes like it's been brewing for days-the flavors are so rich and textured. For our entrees we got the short rib and the fish and grits. Both were perfectly seasoned and delicious z for desert we split the red velvet cake-it was the moistest, most delicious red velvet cake that I'd ever had. We will definitely be back-I wanted to try at least four of the entrees. The cocktails were also interesting and well-balanced. Make sure to make reservations-it's packed all night long- I heard a walk-in get quoted a 75 minute wait. Check it out!
Seriously great on every level.
Joe, the server brought us great foods which he thought we would love. We insisted on the gizzards and in addition to that he brought us cornbread, collard greens, short rib, scallops, and for dessert , banana pudding. I can't wait to go back.
Visited here for my man's birthday.
We thoroughly enjoyed the food ambiance and service. Seasoning was heavy handed but that did not bother us. The chipotle black beans were a huge surprise treat for my tastebuds. We of course indulged in the "trifecta"; cornbread, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. I ordered the Blackened Cat fish. The dish my partner ordered had the black beans but I don't see it on the menu anymore... I think it was steak? We also got cocktails which were on the side of palate cleansing, whereas I usually prefer sweet. Will revisit
Highly recommend this one!
We pretty much ordered everything on the menu and every bite was fabulous! We chose to dine "family style" and particularly loved the biscuits, the gumbo, the short ribs, and all the sides (mac and cheese, cornbread - yum!). We saved a little room for dessert and particularly loved the peach cobbler. Our server Matthew was wonderful as was the ambiance and overall attention to detail. One of the best meals we have EVER had.
Skip this one if you want to actually spend quality time with friends
I was sitting at the bar with a very good friend and colleague from work tonight. We both had two drinks and dinner. Then another colleague texted and asked to join us... we were both excited to see her and couldn't wait for her to arrive. When our 3rd friend arrived, the front desk told her that she could sit at the bar so she came over to join us. I asked to order another drink because I was going to stay and chat with my friend who just arrived...the bartender who had been pretty responsive didn't respond...Then he returned with a manager who said that I couldn’t order another drink and in fact my friend and I had to get up and leave. We couldn’t stay, we couldn’t order more drinks and chat with our 3rd friend who just arrived. Apparently they have a 90 minute time limit that no one knew about except the people who worked there. I looked at the website, my friends looked at the website, and I even called a friend who had initially introduced me to the restaurant and she looked at the website…we couldn’t find the rule anywhere. We asked several customers already sitting at the bar…they said they were frequent customers and were never told that nor had they ever heard about that. All of us asked the hostesses at the front door and both ladies said yes, your 90 minutes is up and not only that, our third friend who just arrived was told by the ladies that she only had 40 minutes left and she hadn’t even ordered dinner yet! I have been to Virtue multiple times, and I’ve told numerous people about Virtue…it’s a black owned restaurant which I think is important to support, it’s on my way home from work and the food is decent. Also at my last visit, I spent over $400 because I paid for my friends’ meal….but I was told to leave this night. My boyfriend and I visited previously and he spent over $200. The most important factor I think that affects the quality of the restaurant is how you’re treated once you’re there. That’s at the top of my list and will make or break an establishment in my book. I would rather dine at a restaurant where I can spend quality time with friends without being put on a timer. The bartender, after telling me to leave, even recommended a different restaurant apparently with the same owner that I could visit…Why would I go to a different restaurant when my friend was at Virtue? Why would I go to any restaurant owned, operated by the same people after the stressful experience I had at Virtue? Well, I plan to let my other friends know about this & post my review on all of my social media sites and other restaurant review sites. I’m also going to just mention in case people didn’t know…this restaurant doesn’t allow you to just order food to take out and there is an additional charge on your bill to pay for the staff’s health insurance. I have been to many, many beautiful restaurants in my day and I have never been charged for the staff’s insurance…unless it’s hidden in the bill and I just don’t know about…but never have I seen a charge that requires customers to take on part of the responsibility that should solely belong to the owner.
Biscuits to remember
Every moment of our visit was delightful. Service was excellent, atmosphere on a Sunday evening was electric. The food was wonderful and I’ll remember it for a long time. If you plan a trip to Chicago, make a plan to stop in for a meal - I can’t imagine anyone who lives food being disappointed.
Worth the drive
This was the first time dining at Virtue. Table was directly in front of the chefs cooking area. It was amazing to see Chef Damarr operating in the sane mild and focused manner as he exhibited while competing on Top Chef. It was equally great to watch the very organized operation of the waitstaff. My server Anthony was very attentive although it was extremely busy. We ordered Gumbo. Red Snapper with Lima Beans & Okra, Cornbread, Mac n Cheese and Banana Pudding for dessert. The food was good however the Mac n Cheese and Banana Pudding were really good. I gave 4 stars for atmosphere as it was crowded, therefore loud and my table was so close to the next table.
A Can’t Miss!!
Virtue has a cozy, vibrant vibe. The staff was welcoming and attentive. We got small and large rations and shared family style. We found this the be the best way to sample as many dishes as possible. Got gumbo, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, shrimp and grits, mac and cheese, and cherry crumble cake. Everything was exceptional! For us, the gumbo and the mac and cheese were the standouts. Best we’ve ever had! This is a can’t miss!!
Don’t sleep on the gizzards!
Great food and cocktails, menu has some solid staples and a rotating seasonal offerings. Everything was well portioned and very tasty
Do pass up a chance to eat here!!
The atmosphere was incredible. Very friendly staff. The food was superb!! The gumbo 🙌🏼. The watermelon cucumber salad. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. But the short rib and cornbread…. Just wow!! 🤤
Overrated and overpriced
For this restaurant to be a Michelin star... It’s overpriced & overrated. 6/2/23 Chicken wings wasn’t seasoned, and abit undercooked. Biscuits were hard. Pimento cheese was clumpy and the crackers should’ve been better, not regular saltine. Catfish sliders were decent and the gizzards were tender. The inconsistent and not hospitable bartenders need training. One didn’t refresh my glass nor poured my drink into it. The other lady had an attitude. It took a long time to remove plates. I was overcharged, so check your bill. Happy hour is only honored at the bar.
A must go
Whew by all means a must go to.. 1. Excellent staff 2. flavorful and seasoned to perfection food 3. Clean clean clean 4. Reasonably priced 5. Didn’t have to wait on server they worked togather as a team to provide service A 5 star fine dinning experience in the middle of Chicago Hyde Park ! The icing on the cake They continue to say her name / their name !! #SandraBland #Sandystillspeaks I love it!!
