Great consistency and value.
The presentation when you take out is lovely and the food is always delicious. Love both locations.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious! A bit pricey but so worth the expense.
I got the Cheese and a bowl for lunch the next day.
Be the first to ReplyGood fast service.
Great food. Large portions and reasonably priced. Came here for that Katsu and it is yummy & crunchy! This place does not disappoint. I will be back!
Be the first to ReplyNo ambiance, okay service.
But the food is really good. Classic Japanese style. The location on Olympic is a little difficult to find parking depending on day and time. Worth it.

Wasn't expecting much but it turned out to be a really nice find. Ramen broth was nice and spicy. Barley water was refreshing and the Donkasu was crispy and juicy! I will definitely come to this place next time I visit LA. 10/10 would recommend. Has underground parking which was only 5 dollars with a 75 cent card fee. Don't forget to validate your parking!

I'm a fan! A few Yelp Elite'ers that I follow wrote about this place, so I've been wanting to check it out. It was worth the drive from Pasadena and I will definitely be back! What I liked:- parking in the back! This area can get tricky with street parking, so the fact that it had a dedicated lot made it SO much easier to visit - service was friendly, respectful and fast! Everyone here was very friendly and we were seated right away- pork cutlet was DELICIOUS! Being Japanese, Im a bit picky with my tonkatsu, but this place was right on! The pork cutlet was tender, nicely crisp and flavorful- pork cutlet sandwich was good! Wish the bread was slightly warmer, but I still enjoyed it- you can ask for more sauce! What I wish differently:- sauce was a bit too sweet in my opinion, but not overly sweet. - I wish the combo came with white rice, but it comes with rice if you don't get the combo Price was acceptable, and well worth it.

Love that they serve barley tea and they give you a tiny mortar and pestle so you can grind your sesame seeds for the sauce. I order the chicken cutlet and pork cutlet and always notice that the chicken cutlet is twice as big as the pork. Portions are huge, the breading is light and crispy, and the meat inside is juicy. It comes with miso soup, a shredded cabbage salad with yummy dressing, radishes, jalapeños and white rice. The price has gotten more expensive but it's so worth it.

The tonkatsu is excellent! So crispy! The spicy ramen was delicious, the broth is so tasty! The shaved cabbage is really good too. I definitely would eat here again.
Be the first to ReplyPretty decent katsu in LA.
I got the combo which is really worth it, and the udon balances the katsu pretty well. I've had juicier katsu before though. The service was great and there is lot of seating inside
Be the first to ReplyChicken tonkatsu is decent but not the best.
I do like how the breading layer is thin and there is a lot of meat. I didn't really like the sauce tho. I wish there was another option for their dipping sauce. I prefer coco ichibanya for their tonkatsu. There is a free back parking lot which is nice in ktown.

Wako is a classic in Koreatown for donkkaseu (Korean pork cutlet). There are two locations- one on Wilshire located in the same complex as Boiling Crab and a second one on Olympic as a stand-alone restaurant. I went to the Wilshire location where metered street parking is available but hard to find. Parking is available in the lot for $5 with validation for up to 3 hours and $1.50 for each additional 30 minutes. If you are just picking up your food, up to 30 minutes is free. Note from 3pm-12am signs say valet only and that's because the parking lot gets packed during the evening hours. If you order any of the cutlets, they start you off with a bowl of sesame seeds that you can grind to your heart's content for that nice nutty umami before they pour in the cutlet dipping sauce. I opt for the chicken cutlet instead of the pork cutlet since they make their chicken one so juicy and the portions are big. It comes with a small salad, bowl of rice, miso soup, and side of radish kimchi with pickled peppers. I always have leftovers of the chicken cutlet to take home for a nice snack the next day. Their chicken cutlet is always consistent, tasty, and comforting which is what always keeps me coming back. Until next time, cheers!

Probably the best tonkatsu ever! Price is a bit much but it's because the portions are huge and the sides are great. They're located in the same plaza as Boiling Crab. I took it to go and it took me two days to finish it. Ok, I decided to give this place one more chance, and look how things have turned back to normal, if not with even more portions and better taste than pre-covid. It was like 180 degrees. Not sure if management has changed over the past few years, but the food quality and service were absolutely top notch. Just look at the pics.

This place is famous for their katsu and the katsu is quite delicious. It has the right amount of crunch and when you order the set, it does come with a lot of food. They give you sesame seeds for you to grind to add to the katsu sauce. The set comes with salad and a choice of noodles with some side veggie dishes. If I were to come back, I would only order the katsu option. I ordered soba noodles with my set and it was not to my liking. There's a sauce to dip it in but if you don't dip it enough, then it gets plain. My friend told me to not Pour the sauce over it. The texture and taste of the soba was not something I would order again. But the katsu was tasty. There's a small parking lot around the corner. It can be a little tight making reverse driving quite difficult so be careful.
Be the first to ReplyCheese katsu is a MUST.
YOU HAVE TO TRY IT AT LEAST ONCE! So so good. Very attentive staff & patient. Wonderful ambience. Chill atmosphere all around.
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
The server is super nice and fast even during busy hours :) The katsu sauce is beyond amazing and the chicken katsu is super soft and has DOUBLE servings for the same price as the normal katsu!! Super amazing! Atmosphere is perfect too :) Perfect date spot. Very affordable and amazing service!!

Had this for lunch the other day and the chicken cutlet didn't disappoint. The miso soup was a little bland to me but the chicken was so good
Be the first to ReplySuuuuper yummy pork cutlet and shrimp pops! Nice and crispy
Suuuuper yummy pork cutlet and shrimp pops! Nice and crispy exterior with juicy, tender interior. I love that they bring out toasted sesame seeds for you to grind yourself before adding the katsu sauce, a nice touch in my opinion! We were here on a Saturday night at 7 and it was just busy enough to where you can still be seated right away. We got one combo meal to share and it was the perfect amount!
Be the first to Replyamazing price and portions were huge.
customer service was great and food tasted amazing. only downside was the horrible parking situation
Be the first to ReplyI spent a couple of college summers working in Koreatown,
I spent a couple of college summers working in Koreatown, and back then, Wako was one of my go-to places for lunch. Then I moved away for a few years, and when I came back, I somehow neglected to eat here for over a decade. This was, in retrospect, foolish in the extreme. Don't be like me. Eat at Wako every chance you get.I went for a Friday lunch with my friend Jordan H. at the end of April, and the place was unchanged from my last visit, circa 2006. It's a comfortable, unassuming spot in the historic, iconic, and always impressively ugly Brown Derby Plaza. Parking was free with validation for a while, but I always manage to go over my time and pay when I park in this lot. At least it's convenient. There was no wait at 12:30 on a Friday, which is another reason I should go all the time. Service was fast and friendly. The food is absolutely delicious. My go-to used to be the hamburger donkasu, which has the advantage of coming with the house donkasu sauce. I remember grinding sesame seeds with a little mortar, which I didn't get to do when I ordered the curry donkasu this time around. It's hard to argue with the curry donkasu, though. It's a perfect, satisfying meal of deep-fried pork cutlet with a rich, flavorful curry sauce. The pork comes with rice and one of those mostly ignorable cabbage salads on the side, as well as some kimchi, jalapeño, and a bowl of miso soup. Jordan and I also split an order of zaru soba, which was both gluttonous and a very good decision. The cold noodles make a great counterpart to the hearty donkasu.I can't believe I slept on Wako all these years when I knew full well that the food was top notch. It's possible I didn't trust my memory of those ancient pre-Yelp days. Now that I've been reminded, though, I'll be back soon and often.
Be the first to ReplyLocation/Experience: 9/10Was able to find metered street
Location/Experience: 9/10Was able to find metered street parking in front ($1/hour), but I think there was also an underground parking lot for the plaza Wako Donkasu is in. We kept walking past the store on accident, but it's in the alcove-like area that goes in on the main floor of the plaza (the floor with the most other restaurants). Taste: 10/10I ordered the fish cutlet ($17.95), which came with rice, miso soup, pickled radishes, pickled jalapenos, and a mountain of salad. The fish cutlet was absolutely delicious, the breading was perfectly crispy and the fish was flaky. My friend ordered the Pork Cutlet Udon-combo ($19.95), which I think is an even better deal if you are really hungry or just want leftovers. It comes with everything that came with my meal and a whole bowl of udon! The udon bowl is pretty large and maybe has 2/3rds of the noodles that you would expect in a regular order. And don't forget to grind the sesame seeds before the waiter returns with the tonkatsu sauce (this happened to us)!! Value: 10/10 The prices seem high, but they give you SO MUCH food. It is easily enough for 2 meals, especially if you order the udon-combo.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I came here on a Friday around noon.
This was our first time here. Some tables were already filled when we went in, and we were self seated. My husband ordersed the regular pork katsu set. His set came with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad, and a couple of types of pickles. I had the pork katsu and soba combo set. My set had the same things except it did not come with rice or miso soup. Instead it was replaced with chilled soba noodles a cup of tsuyu sauce and toppings to dip with the noodles. We both really enjoyed our sets, but my husband wished he got the combo now as the soba seemed to complement the katsu a lot.Overall:Katsu was fried nicely, not greasy and good crunch.Sides complemented the katsu well. Our 2 sets were very filling and definitely money's worth.Service was quick and easy.Remember to validate your parking ticket if you parked in the parking garage below. We spent about and hour there and ended up not needing to pay for parking still!
Be the first to ReplyWako's donkasu is the paragon of Japanese donkasu (or
Wako's donkasu is the paragon of Japanese donkasu (or breaded pork cutlet). Whenever I'm in a hankering for some good donkasu, I always look to Wako to help me out. I find that often donkasu breading can either be a bit too dense with crispier exteriors or a bit soggy if the outer shell is conservatively breaded. However, Wako manages to strike that perfect juicy-crispy balance with each cutlet, so it's no wonder why they've been beloved by Los Angelenos for decades. If you and another person have decent appetites, I suggest ordering a combination meal to share! It'll be more than enough food, trust me. The combination comes with salad, a thick slab of donkasu, a potato croquette, and a tempura-esque shrimp along with a hefty portion of either soba or udon. I've tried all of their noodle options, and the COLD soba is the most impressive! On a separate note, the service is always attentive, and the ambiance is casual. The bathroom isn't super clean, but such is the standard in LA. P.S. what's especially unique about this place is that they hand you a mortar and pestle to grind the sesame seeds to your liking prior to adding the donkasu sauce to mix in. I'd imagine kids having a fun time with that instead of twiddling their thumbs before the food arrives.
Be the first to ReplyThough I didn't go to Wako Donkasu specifically for this
Though I didn't go to Wako Donkasu specifically for this reason, it doesn't hurt that Jonathan Gold went here many years ago and wrote a fantastic review. It's a fun read: laweekly.com/jonathan-go…The portions here are HUGE. Blimey! There was no way I could finish my dish at the restaurant. I brought my leftovers home and it made two additional meals. Goodness gracious, so much food and I'm not mad at it because it was just delicious. You may be familiar with tonkatsu, but whatchu know about the Korean version? It's made fun with a mortar and pestle to grind up a bit of sesame to go with your sauce. And of course you'll get some kimchi. I had the pork and the cheese cutlet so I got a good go at a couple of options. Crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside in all the right ways. Or with the cheese, soft and stretchy in all the right ways! I can't even pick which between them I liked better because they were both so darn good. Loved it! Service was very attentive and on top of everything for us, as well. There's no way I won't be back. I'm all about this.Be sure to check in on Yelp for a free pop!

How did I not find this place sooner? This place was sooo good. They make the cheese cutlet by wrapping the meat with cheese and then deep frying it. It tasted amazing (was very hot temp wise careful)! The combo came with rice, miso soup, katsu dipping sauce, salad, and if you do a check in its free drinks as well. I paid around 30 dollars for a meal of 2 which is pretty darn cheap for the amount of food you get. There wasn't much of a wait and we were seated very fast. They did ask for a covid vaccination card and the staff was very friendly. Would recommend to a friend
