The old restaurant with character never go out of style
Wally's was a fun place to have a party for friends to celebrate my birthday/Christmas Dinner there. The staff was attentive and food was pretty good. It's noting like having dinner at a well established place that has been in the desert over 50 years. Unfortunately , the owners sold it to new owners and I haven't been there since the sale.

Just had our Anniversary dinner here! Thankfully my experience was delightful After the stare down from the bar manager who greeted us but never actually assisted us while we waited for our table. My lavender lady cocktail and husband’s cab were very nice! We were seated in the dining room at a nice table looking out on the main level. Robert, our server was wonderful. We enjoyed seabass and scallops and a veal chop, everything was prepared perfectly! I was a little surprised we weren’t offered a small dessert with a Happy Anniversary In chocolate sauce, but alas nothing grabbed us on the dessert menu, though the soufflés coming through looked amazing! We live in San Diego and both remarked it would be nice to have a restaurant like this in SD!

Perfect. Expensive and worth it. My lovely wife and I are fortunate to be experienced world travelers, and know quality when we experience it. Wally’s is top shelf all the way. Who can find excellent service these days? Wally’s! A well-made and generous Martini. A swarming, knowledgeable and attentive server team who work as one, and who we very much appreciate. Good live music on a Tuesday! Perfect Caesar salad and French onion soup for starters. Lovely stuffed chicken breast and cheese ravioli. Like many of Wally’s throwback pleasures, you can order a soufflé in advance. Don’t miss it.

While visiting Palm Desert, my husband really wanted oysters. I found Wally's and made reservation. Simply a lovely restaurant and excellent servers! My husband had the oysters and I had the braised short ribs...so wonderfully tasty! That night we had Sarah as our main server. She was amazing. The music that night was a saxophone player. He was an awesome muscian. My husband ended his dinner with the souffle. Delicious! We were so impressed that we made reservations for the following night. That night I had the stuffed chicken and my husband had the classic calves liver...the owner went to the chef to get information on how he prepared it! Can't wait to try his recipe! That night, the music was provided by a lovely young man who was such a crooner! He made our experience sweeter. Thanks to Frank, our server. Two of the best meals ever!

This was the first time that I had ever dined here. I had no idea what to expect. This is a very classy restaurant with very professional wait staff. There is a musician in the bar which is a nice touch. The food here is very high in price, but the quality is excellent. The short rib that I ordered was likely the finest I have ever tasted.

Outstanding service, delicious food, gorgeous restaurant. Friday Fasion Show has models wearing lovely jewelry and fashions stopping at each table to share details. Many luncheon choices on a fixed menu. I had tomato bisque soup. Quiche with salad greens, and spice cake. Wonderful afternoon

The last time we were here I easily gave Wally’s a 5. This time I’m struggling to give 3. Everything last night was a step off: seating, wine, food, service. We were celebrating a special occasion so I made our reservation 2 months ago and they gave us the worse seat in the house. I was seated next to a glass column so every time I looked left I saw myself. The wait station was in my reach. When we sat down pens, papers, menus were strewn on a ledge right next to the table. My husband said it looks like we interrupted someone’s study session. After a bit I piled it and slid it to
The side. 4 wait staff congregated there. While we we trying to enjoy cocktails they chatted away. I finally turned around and they asked if we needed something. I said no, just wondering what all the commotion is about. One of them came over a actually explained their conversation since it wasn’t in English. The Martinis were lovely, the wine flight awful. Instead of 3 wines in nice wine glasses with descriptive collars or tags I received 1 wine glass with 3 wines in water glasses. The name of the wine was written on a small piece of tablet paper. No year. The menu showed 1 sav blanc and 2 Chardonnay. They brought 3 Sav Blanc. The whole experience felt like a diner. My husband ordered a red by the glass to go with his entree. His steak came before his wine which is the worst. The food could have been good but it obviously sat under a warming light for way to long. That really affected the scallops&sea bass. We moved to the bar for Coffee and after dinner drinks. Sax player was great and that was the best part of the night.
Old times still around
We have been in the desert for two months and this is by far the best of all the places we have dined. You feel comfortable from the moment you enter the place. Ambiance in abundance. Nice piano and sax music from yesteryear. Service was professional and you could tell that Robert new how to treat customers properly. Wines and a bloddy mary started the evening. Two orders of Carpaccio (one appetizer and one entre). I had the entire and it was probably the best I have ever had. My wife had the tuna tartare and I didn't even get a taste. Delicious!!!. One order of Calves liver which was devoured. Two souffles (one chocolate, one grand mariner) for desert topped off the evening. Also a piece of carrot cake with a candle for the birthday girl (my wife). If you are looking for a relaxing evening or a romantic evening, this is the place to go. Be sure to make a reservation!!!

I surprised my wife, on a milestone birthday, with a fabulous dress-up dinner at Wally's, perhaps the best restaurant in the Greater Palm Springs area. While I brought a bottle of excellent wine to compliment the meal, the real treat was the incredible food and highly professional, attentive service. Wally's Desert Turtle made this birthday truly memorable for both of us.
Knowing that we were both celebrating birthdays the next week, three days apart, Wally's presented us with separate dessert plates with our names and Happy Birthday written in chocolate. The selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts is broad and beautifully presented, encompassing every taste.
I would recommend Wally's Desert Turtle for the food, service, atmosphere and delightful sax player in the background!
Now THIS is "Old Palm Springs"
After years in the desert, we finally tried Wally's . . . on Christmas Eve, no less . . . and were not disappointed! This is traditional, "old Palm Springs" dining at its best. It's not hip. It's not trendy. It's filled with the affluent country club set and with the finest work of our local cosmetic surgeons. People watching was spectacular. We loved every minute of it.
Wally's is elegant and beautiful. There was a piano player, in the upper bar/dining area, playing the old romantic standards. Tables were beautifully set. Lighting was perfect.
Service? Considering it was Christmas Eve, and packed, it was surprisingly good. We never felt the server was rushed and she was very pleasant, but also efficient. Our meal was nicely paced.
There was a prix fixe menu, the night we dined, which was excellent. I had the turkey dinner which, face it, is difficult to make particularly remarkable. It WAS though. Delicious. The other items were equally well prepared and presented. No trendy foam. No towers. No little dots of sauce. Just beautiful, traditional dishes that tasted great. The wine selection was good too.
We would rate Wally's a "5 star" except for two things.
First, although we were seated within 20 minutes of our reserved time, (not bad, actually), the reception stand was complete chaos. It was staffed with two young girls, one of whom was dressed in a shockingly slutty dress, who seemed completely out of their element. They were unable to manage the pushy characters crowding around them and seemed dazed by the crush.
Second, the manager, or matre d', was circulating among the tables, greeting diners. It's a nice touch, but he hovered over our table, maskless, (in violation of regulations), and it made us quite uncomfortable. In fact, about a third of the patrons were maskless, while standing or walking, and Wally's made no effort to ask people to follow state law. That was disappointing. People notice.
Christmas Dinner
The service was impeccable despite the restaurant being extremely busy. Food was fabulous too. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Be the first to ReplyFine Dining but….
We enjoyed the food which was quite pricey but a treat if you are prepared to pay for a fine dining evening. The rack of lamb was outstanding. The presentation was beautiful but my personal preference would have been something savory to complement rather than steamed vegetables.
The music and ambiance added to the experience.
What was surprising was our main waiter who acted like he was in a huge hurry and couldn’t spend more than a couple seconds with us. Almost shockingly brusque. As we hurriedly gave him our orders he asked if we wanted a soufflé as if we knew what the dessert menu was. We hadn’t seen a dessert menu. I noticed virtually identical comments from a diner here in October 2020 so this guy seems to have survived here which is a huge mystery to us. The other three younger people who were part of the team supporting us were very engaging and attentive and in all other respects the service was excellent.
This Could Be Your Special Place
Tonight at Wally’s the food was as wonderful as usual but what was even better was seeing a table with two 80 or 90 year olds get into a conversation with a table of two 20 or 30 year olds who were celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary. The older folks were celebrating a birthday but they commented to the younger set that they had been married something like 70 years. It’s that kind of place where people just start talking to each other. Great food, great staff, yes it’s pricey but the quality and service is there.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced for What It Offers
This was supposed to be a special occasion dinner. The prices were completely in line with what we expected to pay for such a meal. Regrettably neither the food nor service met our expectations. The food was competently prepared but nothing more -- wholly unimaginative and lacking any "wow" factor at all.
The attitude of the service staff was mixed. Our first server was surly and curt. She was replaced by a much more congenial and professional waiter. However, the pacing of the meal was completely amateurish. Our bottle of wine was not brought to the table until we were halfway through our appetizers. The main course was delivered with virtually no interval at all after the appetizer plates were removed.
This was a tremendously disappointing meal. It was intended as the highpoint of our 4-day visit to the desert. Instead it was completely out-shone by meals at much more modest restaurants, where the food was excellent and the service both capable & friendly.
