WAU New York Reviews from The Last Year
Not so "Wau" to be honest.
This is re: a delivery order, so I can't comment on the service or place. But the food. It's okay. But for the price, it should be a big wow/wau. I ordered various dishes which seemed to taste the same, even the descriptions were very different. Here's what I can comment on: - Salt and Pepper Coconut -- Kind of interesting. But too fried to enjoy the flavor. Dipping sauce was like spicy mayo... liked it but it kind of didn't go... - The Roti Telur wasn't bad. But not memorable. Too heavy without enough flavor. - Crispy Tom Yum Lotus Root - Flavor is decent, but so fried it's not "worth" the flavor for the way I felt after I ate it. - Peranakan Laksa / Veg & Tofu- Soothing... But I've had way better. - Honey Chili Sambal Chicken Wings - Tasty, but not that unique. - Pineapple Flower Curry / Veg & Tofu - Not good. SKIP! Doesn't taste like anything other than hot and somehow no flavor. - Coconut Rice Side - Interesting because of the coconut flakes - Pandas Coconut Tiramisu - Looks like someone squeezed overly sweet green icing over a bunch of lady fingers with coconut shreds. Sickly sweet and doesn't ship well. It kind of looks like a kid create the recipe and made it. Sorry to be negative. I really wanted to like it, I was hoping for authentic and got something that was weak and not so interesting or different. Note that they should mark or label what they pack--hard to tell what's what--and what goes with what... On the plus side, they have interesting choices and delivery was as promised.
Really good! Softest fried calamari I've ever had.
The noodles were also delicious - actually full of umami and deep flavor, rather than the usual sugar and msg that you get at a lot of SE Asian restaurants in the city. I had zero expectations (I've never had a good one), but even the vegetarian kale dumplings were good. Friendly service as well. A bit loud with the music and people, but otherwise highly recommend for the food.

WAU is from the same team behind Laut Singapura, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Made a reservation for dinner on a Saturday and tried: + Lemongrass sour cocktail - great + Passionfruit cocktail - awesome + Smoked banana cocktail - great + Roti canai - awesome + Larb gai - great + Peranakan laksa - excellent, though the one at Singapura is better. It had the largest mussels ever!! + Nasi pedang - amazing, the rice was so fragrant + Taro tiramisu - perfect, maybe the highlight for me + Lychee creme brûlée - awesome Need to return for the WAU noodle - another table ordered it and it looked amazing. Awesome spot overall!
The food was delicious.
I had the Rendang Beef and would highly recommend anyone going to get it. It is quite spicy, so if that is a concern of yours when browsing menus, I might softer something else. I went for a date, and I could see many other patrons doing to the same. Whether it be for food or just drinks, I'd recommend it here. Following the experience she said, "we have to come again" if that means anything to you. I went on a Tuesday evening, and there didn't appear to be any wait. I would make a reservation if you are going at any other time
Pretty good but not outstanding.
Better than average for the upper west side. Nasi goring was good. Also larb salad, beef dish
Still enjoy coming to Wau! Really enjoy their food and
Still enjoy coming to Wau! Really enjoy their food and decor. Updating to include pictures.
The food was amazing and the service was truly wonderful.
I can't wait to go back!! Cocktails were on point, incredible flavor and well spiced. Would have been nice to have onnnneeee more piece of potato with the Roti but everything was amazing they still well earned the five stars!
Was really disappointed.
.. First of all, the food wasn't great. They are serving some of the popular street dishes that you would normally find in Southeast Asian countries but the flavors are all over the place. The presentations were nice, but the dishes were way too salty and oily. And that's about it. Where were the bold, umami flavors that these dishes embody?! Seems like this restaurant is more geared towards the upper-class white American palate (think of General Tso's Chicken, that sort of things). If you are looking for an authentic taste of SEA, DO NOT COME HERE. Secondly, the pricing is INSANE. I guess you are paying for the customer service experience (which was very nice) and the high UWS rent. Or restaurant could be simply price gouging...you never know. Charging more than $22 for a simple Pad Thai is unimaginable, unless you really have something to show for it (which they don't). At home, with the right ingredients, you can make this popular dish just as well for under $7! Sadly will not be returning.
Good and drinks were amazing.
Cons: bathroom needs a serious cleaning Pros: drinks were pretty and yummy Food was AMAZING.
Rating: 4.
5 stars I started dinner off with the mango sriracha cocktail (delish!), and then we shared the ridiculously amazing black pepper prawns, spicy roti canai, INSANELY good nasi goreng and capped off the meal with some of the best mango sticky rice that I've had in a very long time. The service was very very good. They had the right balance of attentiveness and were really wonderful with making sure we didn't order too much food. I also really loved the decor, there are a lot of Malaysian and Thai design elements scattered throughout the space. All in all, I was very very impressed. I cannot wait to return to try more of the incredible menu. I'm so glad my friend found this spot!

How do you set a timeline for getting your bid accepted? I can’t wait till the actual time I want to go. I want to know at least eight hours ahead of time. How do you do that?
