Wenwen more like when when am I gonna get my food am I right . The food was pretty good but the service was moderately ass. I enjoyed the ambiance but I had to wait too long for my food so I got bored.
Be the first to ReplyI fundamentally am not a huge brunch person, but Wenwen
I fundamentally am not a huge brunch person, but Wenwen brunch has been on my radar for quite a while so when a friend was visiting from out of town and we needed a brunch spot, I seized the opportunity to give it a shot. We were a group of four and I would honestly recommend going with more than two people so that you can mix/match and share some small plates. We did some Taiwanese beer accompanied by the cold sesame noodles, BDSM chicken sandwich, cucumbers, popcorn chicken, pork belly over rice (don't quite know the name of the dish now). Everything was truly delicious, but they definitely are known for their chicken for good reason. Would highly recommend at least one fried chicken option while you are here. Oh, and I should definitely note that the bathroom slayed with its little disco ball and dancey music :)
Be the first to ReplyHad a fine but unmemorable meal here.
Perhaps it's because I didn't order the best items, but none of the dishes I had I felt were either that creative or better than the original dish it was inspired by. We got: Dongbei salad - This was fine but pretty standard, and I prefer when the tofu noodles are slightly softer. Would try the celtuce salad instead next time. Tater Tot Dan Bing - tbh I think I liked Dan Bing more without the tater tot than with tater tot. Still tasty but not a twist that I think elevated the dish.

The hype around Wenwen has died down a little, which means it's a bit easier to get one of the limited-to-5-per-day first-come-first-serve BDSM chickens now. We were the first party at 5pm on a weekday but based on our visit I'd say you'd have a solid chance arriving at 5:30 or even 6pm on a weekday and scoring one. The chicken didn't disappoint - it was juicy, crisp, and intensely flavorful, a really creative take on fried chicken. Was it worth $62? I wouldn't be clamoring to come back for it, but if a group of friends wanted to come again and split one I also wouldn't be opposed. Other dishes were enjoyable as well - good luroufan is so surprisingly hard to find in NYC that Wenwen's $18 "lo ba beng" version seems like a good find. I also enjoyed the diced shrimp-and-youtiao lettuce cups, although it came with 6-7 small romaine lettuce leaves, not nearly enough to use up all the filling, and the waitress said it would be $5 more for an extra order (of raw romaine lettuce leaves). Seriously? I do actually like that there's only one dessert option - they know it's a winner. If you come to Wenwen, just get the fried tangyuan dessert.

Really solid Taiwanese spot in Greenpoint by the owners of 886. The place was very busy on a Friday night. We had a 7pm reservation, but apparently our table was occupied and we couldn't actually sit down until 7:30pm, which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a reservation in advance. We ordered the crispy tofu appetizer, which was good to start with. The tofu was coated with "Taiwan Dust" and the garlic soy paste dipping sauce added a lot of flavor. We also ordered the fried rice and the beef fat chili oil noodle, which we enjoyed, but while the fried rice was yummy it wasn't particularly amazing for $18. The noodles were also good - very flavorful and vinegary, but the beef was a little hard to chew, and the noodles themselves were way too long so it was hard to eat family style. Overall really good flavors, but it is a bit of a trek to get out there. This place has been on my list for a while so I'm glad I got to go, but personally I enjoyed Win Son more!
Be the first to ReplyGood place to try out if you're interested in trying out
Good place to try out if you're interested in trying out Taiwanese food in Greenpoint area. I came here with a party of 3 and we ordered a few dishes to try - the BDSM chicken, crispy tofu, peashoots, and the beef noodle soup. We know that the BDSM is what they're most famous for so we had to give it a try. I was pretty skeptical when I first saw the price since it was a lot pricier than the other dishes. We got to the restaurant at 6pm on a Tuesday night and it quickly filled up by 6:45pm to almost full capacity. The food came out one by one and each looked amazing. The tofu was some of the crispiest I've had and pretty good with the sauce and side veggies. The peashoots were delectable and had a lot of "wok hei" as they say in Chinese. The beef noodle soup was pretty decent as well, only qualm is that it only comes with about 3 pieces of beef and it's quite small. The BDSM chicken came out super interesting - the chicken was fried and the meat was juicy. The only thing I didn't love is that the powder/spices was almost a bit too much in my opinion - the powder made it a bit too dry for my liking. Would I pay over $60 for the chicken again? Probably not since it didn't feel like it had as much substance as I would have expected. Overall it was a pretty good spot to check out if you're interested in Taiwanese food in the area.

Food was ok, good decor and seemed better suited for small groups. Reservation was too late so didn't get to try the bdsm chicken. The popcorn chicken flavor reminded me more of Korean fried chicken, sweet and sticky- the chicken breast pieces were a tad dry. Good portion size relatively though. Beef noodle soup tasted slightly fusion, but pretty solid. Pork belly and cuttlefish sauce was your typical braising sauce (good but expensive for what it is, and cuttlefish definitely did not belong in the dish imo). Shrimp floss lettuce cups were interesting, decent take. Pea shoots were somewhat overpowered by the sauce base used for the dish. Would come back to try the bdsm chicken and the beef fat chili oil noodles.
Be the first to ReplyA Taiwanese restaurant worth the trek to greenpoint in
A Taiwanese restaurant worth the trek to greenpoint in brooklyn! GET THE BDSM CHICKEN I went for dinner at 4:30 pm to wait on line to be one of the first out of 5 for the bdsm chicken. i recommend making reservation at 5 for the bdsm chicken because they only serve 5 a day. the BDSM chicken was crispy on outside, tender on inside and just enough fattiness. the spicy vegetables on top complimented the saltiness and crispiness of the chicken. worth the wait. sacha hot honey popcorn chicken was my favorite, because it was crispier than the BDSM and you could taste the basil and honey flavor along with MSG and salt. this was one of the best fried chicken I have had. beef noodles was a bit dry, but we had the lily flemming fried rice and the pork was perfectly fried and there were tons of seasonings in the rice. this is fried rice done correctly. we had the fried tangyuan for the dessert and the cold ice cream contrasted with the warm and squishy tangyuan. the texture was amazing. wenwen nailed it on their frying technique and seasoning profile, and i want to come back for their brunch menu
Be the first to ReplyGreat ambience, delectable food and friendly service.
Fabulous spot to do family style dining. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE DESSERT! Omg it was soooo good!

Twelve of us had an absolutely amazing Saturday brunch at Wenwen for a friend's bachelorette. Resy actually doesn't let you book for that large a group so I emailed the restaurant directly, and they promptly responded, happy to make the reservation and requiring a credit card on file for last-minute cancellations. For any cancellations made after 12 PM on the day of the reservation, they may charge a $30 per person fee.We ordered family-style off their brunch menu (which you can find on Yelp but not their website), and everything was delicious. I especially loved the pickled cucumber salad, BDSM chicken sandwich, pea shoots with tofu skin, lo ba beng, savory soy milk, and Taiwan toast (which is BIG. Highly recommend splitting). My favorite was the fried rice. Ngl, I didn't expect the most ubiquitous dish to blow my mind.Pro tips: The brunch menu has a sandwich version of the BDSM chicken that isn't capped at only 5 orders per day. Check out the bathrooms. Follow @wenwenbk and Chef @esze.e to get hype for your visit.

2 dude, shared a BDSM, braised pork rice, and water spinach.Braised Pork Rice 滷肉飯 - Not bad, the flavor is there, small to medium cut of pork, the hint of peanut powder(i believe) is a non authentic but pleasant touch, remind me of the peanut powder commonly used on pig blood rice dish. the ramen style egg was a nice touch. 4/5, 3/5 if consider pricing. I am being mean here since lo ba bun is best cheap, small bowl, and eaten on the street. I personally enjoy larger chunks of pork, closer to 控肉飯, but this may bode better to local pallet.BDSM chicken 炸雞 - very crispy, very tender. Flavor profile reminds you of the "Big Fried Chicken Fillet" you can find in Taiwan night market. I personally ate all parts of it and consider the feet one of the better part since i like cartilage and skin. 5/5 if we talking fried chicken. a bit costly. Shareable between 2 people and definitely definitely between 3-4. Would recommend to try it once to check it off your list, but it didn't blow me away (maybe if i've never had the stuff in actual Taiwan night market)Water spinach (Hollow Stem Veggie) 空心菜 - I was lamenting that he missed an opportunity to showcase 沙茶醬 shacha stir fried water spinach which is crazy flavorful, however, ..... i had to bite my tongue. The shrimp paste contains a crap ton of umami rival that of sacha sauce and the fried shallot untop compliments the dish and adds texture, smell and umami. If you like taiwanese food and vegetable do not skip this dish. (again i would dock points for price but, i digress as a non new yorker)10/10 would recommend for brining friends or trying it out, 5/10 for regular meals due to priceI only had a vodka water to drink, but i think serving up some traditional Taiwan Beer would go great with the BDSM chicken. at that price it should just come with 2 can to complete the feel.Staff was attentive and friendly, vibe was casual to smart.I would say if they can create more "tapa" style dish in different flavor profile it would be amazing, think drunken chicken, grilled squid, etc.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Taiwanese restaurant with relaxed vibes.
The popcorn chicken was great and almost a meal on to itself. The shrimp floss lettuce was really good--basically lettuce wraps. Would've given 5 stars but their drink menu needs serious intervention. Not one good drink.
Be the first to ReplyConfused by the hype around this place.
Their sister restaurant 886 is great, and I've been a big fan of the sze daddy chili oil for years, but this was not it. My boyfriend and I made a reservation for a Saturday night and it was a total letdown. I tried: + Two p's in a class cocktail+ Taipei Pina cocktail + Lily Flemming fried rice with pork paigu + Beef noodle soup+ Seaweed fries + Popcorn chicken Drinks: Can skip the cocktails; they were super weak. Food: The noodles in the soup were overcooked, and it was not that flavorful. The fries and chicken were great but not better than you can get at other less hyped spots. The best thing we ate was the fried rice. Service: Pacing was bad - we were taking the first bite of the apps when the entrees showed up, and would have liked more time because we ended up rushing to eat everything before it got cold. Dishes came out lightning quick and we were there for less than an hour total - kind of felt like they were just trying to turn tables. I don't mind fast-casual pacing/ambiance (like at 886), but they are marketing this place as a higher-end, sit-down establishment. You can get better Taiwanese food with none of the Resy stress at Yumpling, 886, and Very Fresh Noodles.

After learning about Wenwen and the rave about their Fried BDSM chicken, I tried but failed to get a reservation for dinner tonight. Feeling bold and lucky, we a party of 4 showed up anyway and we lucked out in being able to sit at the bar to eat. My heartfelt thanks to the host (I did not get his name) who was a good soul in spotting us places at tNormally, we would prefer a table but for this place the bar looked inviting and I decided for the group that it was a go. I am glad we did because our experience was a fun one.

4 stars for the food but two and a half or three for the ambiance. It's a crowded little place, and we were seated in the far back - an area that was likely an outdoor space previously and felt like it (we kept our coats on as it was super cold). The food came super speedily; there was no space between the apps and the entrees. The fried tofu was very tasty, as was the celltuce salad. Less successful were the 886 noodles. The flavor resembled sesame noodles and had a strong peanuty flavor and viscous texture. They were also super oily. We preferred the beef noodle soup but, overall, felt that the apps were more successful flavor-wise.
Be the first to ReplyI've heard great things about the BDSM chicken and I really
I've heard great things about the BDSM chicken and I really do want to try, but it's a shame they only serve five a day. The rest of the food was alright, but not worth a trip back unless you can guarantee a BDSM chicken. I arrived at 4:45 pm on a weekday to try my hand at getting the BDSM chicken, but we were unfortunately sixth in line, so we didn't get a chance to try.Instead, we ordered the lo ba beng and 886 noodles for our entree and fried tangyuan with ice cream for dessert. The lo ba beng was good, but not really memorable. The 886 noodles was missing a bit of flavor since it felt very one dimensional. I think a little acidity could've added a lot to the dish. My favorite was the fried tangyuan, but after a few bites it was too salty and too sweet, so they could've toned down on both. I enjoyed the concept though since there was goji berries and cilantro in this dessert.Side note: the baijiu roulette seems fun if you're into that type of game!
Be the first to ReplyThis place has been on my list for a while and I finally
This place has been on my list for a while and I finally got the chance to try it out this week! Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the food and service. We made a reservation for a Thursday night and were seated right away when we got there. It was definitely pretty crowded and noisy, but that was expected! We ordered quite a few dishes. My favorites were probably the hot honey popcorn chicken and the fried rice with pork. The popcorn chicken was super crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and I really liked the sauce! It did have quite a bit of powder on it though which made the texture a bit less enjoyable, but overall it was great. The fried rice was just fantastic! Not too oily, and perfectly savory. It went great with the pork.We also ordered a couple drinks which were both decent, as well as the sea bass and the pea shoots. Unfortunately, I didn't like either of these much -- I think in the pea shoots the garlic was burnt which gave the dish a really bitter taste. The sea bass was alright but a bit too salty, and the fish cake combo was kinda weird LOL.For dessert, we ordered the friend tang yuan which was super weird but in a good way -- really unique and definitely wack but still enjoyable. Also, their bathrooms are super cool!Overall, I liked it but feel like I might have liked it more if I ordered something different. Might try it again if I have the chance :)
Be the first to ReplyWe need more Taiwanese food options and I'm so glad to have
We need more Taiwanese food options and I'm so glad to have this new addition in Brooklyn!! I've been searching for good Taiwanese food for the past five years that I've been here in NYC and I'm glad this place opened in Brooklyn!I've been here a couple of times and got to try the BDSM chicken, the popcorn chicken, the crispy tofu, the you fan (with and without the uni), the water spinach and the cold sesame noodles. This is the perfect place to go with a slightly larger group so you can do family style and try all of the dishes! They only make 5 BDSM chickens per day so if you're hoping to order that, I would recommend you go early! It's definitely one of the most flavorful dishes I've had in a while and worth trying if you're a fan of fried chicken. It's able to be perfectly moist while absorbing ALL the yummy flavors. Also another good reason to bring more peeps to the party. The popcorn chicken and crispy tofu were also pretty good. The you fan the first time tasted good--I never thought uni and pork would be such a great addition to the you fan! However, when I went the second time, I found the you fan to be undercooked and the rice to be hard. The water spinach is a dish I would order everytime--super flavorful with all of the shrimp paste in the water spinach! The fried tangyuan was one of my favorite dishes! It's perfectly light and sweet and reminds me of the ice cream that they serve in crepes as a street food in the touristy areas of Taiwan! The food might be a little pricey but overall pretty worth!
Be the first to Reply6/5 stars for the amazing service.
The host and staff were all so friendly, and we decided to go with their recommendations for the food.We had an early reservation to get the BDSM chicken. It was good and was a big portion, but it wasn't the highlight of the dinner. The best dish was the shrimp floss lettuce cups. It was crispy, salty, umami. It was everything you would want it a dish. It was such a good variation on a similar dish I grew up eating. Water spinach and shrimp paste was okay. You do have to be okay with eating something a bit more fermented to enjoy this. The crispy fried tofu had a perfect texture, but make sure to eat it with the garlic soy paste, or it does get a bit bland. The sacha hot honey popcorn chicken wasn't spicy like I thought it would be. The chicken was juicy and a perfect combination of sweet and savory. Pickled cucumber salad was refreshing and was something different compared to all of the cooked items. You fan was very much like a Chinese sticky rice. It didn't feel as special as the other dishes. Fried tangyuan was to die for. The tangyuan was perfectly chewy. I loved the sesame paste. The vanilla ice cream wasn't too sweet. The cilantro was such a nice contrast to the sweetness of the dessert as well. Wenwen is a great experience. It brings its own twist on nostalgic dishes.
Be the first to ReplyYummy Taiwanese comfort food! While the dishes did come
Yummy Taiwanese comfort food! While the dishes did come quite close to my Nai Nai's, the high price point was hard to come to terms with. We got a ton of dishes including you fan, fried rice with pork jowl, cucumbers, water spinach, popcorn chicken, fried tofu, 866 noodles, and more. My favorite dish was the water spinach. The flavor was so dynamic, and the little shrimps provided great texture. It was also a great dish to eat in between bites of super filling and fatty foods. The you fan and fried rice were also delicious. I would suggest only getting one rice dish, because it definitely became a lot. The 866 noodles were a bit too salty and soy-saucy for my taste. I could only have a couple small bites before it became overwhelming. We also got a couple of cocktails, but we were disappointed. the Taipei Pina was okay, but the Boiling Point cocktail tasted like essential oils. It was very bitter and strange-tasting. Overall, the food was good, the drinks not so much, and the price was a bit high. I would give them 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 4 since Yelp doesn't do half stars.
Be the first to ReplyFood was pretty good, maybe a bit on the pricier side.
The bad review is coming from the service which was pretty good until the end where we kept getting rushed and unfinished food that my mother was still eating was tossed out while she went to the toilet.
Be the first to ReplyTried the brunch menu with a party of 5 and there were so
Tried the brunch menu with a party of 5 and there were so many options that we ordered so much! It was super filling and personally enjoyed all the dishes, though definitely a favourite or two here and there. Between 5, we got: - Numbing celtuce salad - Crispy fried tofu with garlic soy paste - Fly's head - LoBaBeng - Cold sesame noodle - BDSM chicken sandwich - Soy milk with youtiao The numbing celtuce salad was outstanding!!They got the peppercorn flavour perfectly, while leaving the vegetables extremely crispy and refreshing. It makes for a great hot day out dish that you just keep reaching for. This is an appetizer so the size of the dish is rather small, and definitely wish there was more. The fly's head was also incredible. I'd recommend getting some rice to go with it as it's extremely "pairable" - if the fly's head and rice is all you got, that honestly makes for a great meal by itself too. And of course, the BDSM fried chicken was just as juicy and tender as you think it will be. I personally loved how it came in the form of a sandwich, as I think that combination gives it that much more texture than if it was the whole chicken (though would love to try sometime). The chicken, even in the sandwich, could have done with just a little more flavour if I had to point out something about it, but otherwise I really enjoyed it with the buns and fries on the side. The other dishes were what you would expect at a Taiwanese establishment, nothing too crazy but filling and delicious. I get the hype, and would want to come again for dinner!

A word of advice? Get the earliest reservation possible and order the BDSM chicken the SECOND you sit down, because, for some reason that makes no sense, they only have 5 chickens available each night. So even if you show up on-time for your 5pm reservation on a random weeknight, you'll learn that all 5 of BDSM chickens have already been ordered, a mere 25 mins into their opening. We ordered the Celtuce salad (just alright, I'd skip this tbh), the crispy fried tofu (spectacular), the shrimp floss lettuce cup (solid), popcorn chicken (also solid) and the fried rice (just alright). I'd give the fried tangyuan dessert a 5-star rating all on its own. Though I'd argue that the cilantro does not belong on that dish. I usually don't mind cilantro, but that's when it's on a savory dish -- it's more of a "oh, there's cilantro in here" when it's part of a dessert. Maybe, if I return, I'll get that famous chicken dish in-time.
Be the first to ReplyOnly worth it if you're able to get a reservation here -
Only worth it if you're able to get a reservation here - wouldn't go out of your way and definitely wouldn't wait in line. If you're after the BDSM chicken, they only have 5 per night so go early if you've got your sights set on that. We ordered the crispy tofu, shrimp floss lettuce cups, fly's head, and you fan (they're still out of uni). While the dishes were good, nothing was particularly mind-blowing or memorable. We actually found most of the dishes overly salty rather than flavorful. The best dish of the night was dessert - they only have one on the menu right now but would say it's worth ordering. The cocktails are strong but again - not amazing and a bit overpriced. There was nothing special about my mezcal drink at $19.If you get a reservation for "Alley" you'll be seated downstairs and - be warned - it can get extremely loud due to the small space. All in all, good but think this one is a bit overhyped at the moment.
