Great spot off the beaten path.
Stopped in for a quick beer/bite before dinner. Bao buns were a great snack

"Xiao Bao Biscuit is a culinary gem in Charleston, offering a unique fusion of Asian flavors with Southern comfort. The eclectic menu features inventive dishes that are bursting with bold flavors and creativity. Standout dishes include the Okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake loaded with flavor and texture, and the Fancy Boy Rice, a delightful combination of aromatic rice, tender pork belly, and flavorful toppings. Both dishes showcase the culinary prowess of the chefs and are must-try options. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal with friends or family. The service is friendly and efficient, adding to the overall enjoyable dining experience. Xiao Bao Biscuit is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore adventurous and delicious cuisine in Charleston."

Amazing vibe! The bar is super cool and the restaurant is incredible. We were immediately welcomed at the door by the owner, Joey, and struck up a convo about our hometown (where he used to live)! Had drinks at the bar and a sampling of the xiao bao. So so so good! A must do when in Charleston. Indoor and outdoor seating. Bartender Natalie was on par and the old fashioned was wonderful. The best my husband has had in Charleston. We will be back! Thank you so much Joey and staff!
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately I was disappointed in this spot.
Service was a little unfriendly and the okonomiyaki is only worth getting with the extras. I've had legit okonomiyaki before and this one really lacked flavor unfortunately. It is definitely a showstopper visually when it comes out but left here hungry and looking for something more.

The Som Tum Chicken is only offered at lunch and by far my favorite thing they serve! It's so delicious. You will not leave hungry. Service is always decent and friendly and I love the outdoor seating during Spring in Charleston.
Be the first to ReplyThey don't serve bao at lunch apparently.
They were nowhere on the lunch menu. I got the dumplings and the chili sauce was good but they were slightly undercooked. Also, they were tiny.

I've been at XBB about a dozen times and have never regretted it! The food is always fresh and delicious with just the right amount of spices! The chicken dish on the lunch menu is amazing! My daughter is in love with the cabbage pancake, says it's even better than the one she recently had in Japan. Great for lunch, great for a date! 2 thumbs up!

The drunken noodles were so good! Certainly worth a visit! The vibe is cool, and the staff is friendly!
Be the first to ReplyI've visited this establishment maybe half a dozen times.
My favorite is the green curry and the side of bok choy but I have liked everything I've ever ordered from here. Service is alright, sometimes it gets awkward waiting for the check but the staff is kind. The restaurant has plenty of outdoor seating and it's always easy to grab a chair at the bar if solo. They do not alter their dishes and they do not accept cash except for tipping. I like all of this. There's a menu option for buying the kitchen a beer which I think is neat, too.

Service from our waitstaff and the bar was amazing! Friendly, organized, and quick, plus they special made mocktails for our sober friends. Ambiance was good! Nice noise level, with both indoor and outdoor seating.Kitchen was the problem here--food was middling, but the real issue was the stubbornness. The kitchen refuses all modifications, and won't give you ANY sauce! Nothing but what the dishes came with already on, which was bland. Not even soy sauce for rice or noodles. The food was also pretty inauthentic and seemed rushed--they got it out in 10-15 minutes, but it seemed like it could use more time.Would give one star, but the service and bar were too good!
Be the first to ReplyVery nice Monday lunch choice.
Seated quickly in a very busy restaurant. Our waiter, Ben, was helpful in making selections. Food came out quickly, was hot and delicious. Big portions that we shared but still brought home doggie bags!
Be the first to ReplyI am literally obsessed with Xiao Bao.
Their fried dumplings (appetizer at dinner only) are soft little pillows packed with so much flavor. They are the best thing I have literally ever eaten and unlike anything else I've ever eaten. There's no way you eat one and don't say wow. The staff is so kind, the chefs are absolute angels and I always pop in with friends from out of town or order them on a night in. If you're lucky you get to see the chefs preparing the dishes right in the dining area! The okonomiyaki is fire, I like it even more once it's sat in everything they top it with, get the egg & bacon, trust me. Bao buns, the La Zi Ji with a side of rice or greens (my fav) are all my top recommendations. The vibe in the restaurant is so cool, perfect for out of towners, locals & any foodie under the sun. Thank u guys for existing pls don't ever get rid of the dumplings
Be the first to ReplyWe came here at 2pm on a Thursday for a late lunch.
We were one of two tables. The service was fast and friendly. The Okonomiyaki was tasty with the charred cabbage sweet, tender, and piping hot. The Fat Boy rice could be good (today's flavor was purple Kimchi) but it needed a bit more depth of flavor. The Purple Kimchi was sparse but good. I wanted a little more of it to balance out the blandness of the rest of the rice and broccoli. The dumplings were beef instead of pork (which was the description in the menu) which were a bit on the dry side. The dumpling wrapper could have been steamed a bit longer as it was a bit tough. The dumpling sauce could have used a little more vinegar to balance the soy base. I was denied hot sauce when I requested it. Overall the food was good 3.5/5.

This place was quite good, though the recommendation of 2-3 plates per person is utter insanity. I would start with one per person and if you're still hungry after that you can order more. The food came quickly. My favorites were the Brussels sprouts, the Okonomiyaki, and pad kra.
Be the first to ReplyAnnoying service, probably linked to an annoying chef.
Had high hopes and left disappointed. Full story: My companion and I were excited to try this Bao spot. We both lived in China and have a soft spot for Asian food. Walking in, the ambiance is picnic cozy outside while being accessible speakeasy on the inside. I spotted the dude in the back making gorgeous folds in the dumplings and a glorious selection of Asian beverages. As a vegetarian I love when a restaurant marks the dishes that are vegi. This restaurant tried but the menus confused the crap out of me. One vegi dish mentioned pork and their asterisk game was a bit off. Thankfully the staff was willing to ask the chef lots of questions to clarify. I went with the cabbage. My non-veg companion ordered the dumplings and papaya salad. Papaya salad was good, not vegi, unfortunately for me. The rest of the food fell flat. The dumplings to be undercooked and tough, unfortunately for her.The vegetarian dishes came out a little bland and I asked for their chili oil. They had none for customer use. A delivery truck showed up with what looked like a 20 lb bag of bird eye peppers. I asked for chopped chilis. Denied. Sauces? Nope. They claim that the chef/owner refused to let customers season their dishes, claiming a desire to be true to the cuisine. Every restaurant and stall I went to in China had some sort of spice adds. In my trips to Thailand and Taiwan, spices were abundant. I checked into the background of the chef and it seems like he embraces the Asian culture and even adopted a Chinese name but spent less than a year there. Makes me wonder what sources he is using to define what is true local cuisine. Going around the chef, then, I asked three different staffers for solutions to the blandness and 2 of the 3 told me they were not allowed and one did not respond. Would the chef fire them if they didn't bring out a chili? If we defamed their precious and bland dishes? If dragged to this spot with a friend, bring your own sauces. If you dine on your own volition, the disappointing service is on you.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has incredible food and friendly service.
They make their own dumplings, which are excellent. The red snapper dish with curry is also absolutely phenomenal. I really enjoyed the okonomyaki cabbage pancake, and got all of the extra optional toppings. Would highly recommend trying it out! The only thing that is keeping me from giving this establishment five stars, is that they don't accept cash, which seems very odd, and is disincentivizing to come back. I felt like it was made into a big deal to accept US currency.

Came here with some friends and the weather was perfect for outdoor seating! I liked that the menu was smaller, so we ordered almost everything off the menu to share! Highly recommend coming with people who like to share so you can experience all the flavors.See pictures for more details!
Be the first to ReplyUnique, outstanding food.
One of my very favorite. Try the cabbage pancake with all the toppings.

Xiao is serving up some great food! I would say this place is definitely unique. Make sure you look at the menu before you come to make sure you can find something you'd like, the menu is fairly limited. We really enjoyed the cabbage pancake with egg and bacon. Yum!
Be the first to ReplyXBB doesn't need more praise than it already has.
But here goes. It's not on one of those main streets. It's where actual locals eat and for good reason. XBB serves the food that my Chinese mom makes after we've been to an exciting new Thai, Vietnamese, or Japanese restaurant. It's inventive but rooted in traditional techniques (evident in the way they peel the leaves off their bokchoi or leave the cilantro whole as a garnish).I loved XBB so much that I begged my boyfriend to bring me back a second time during our trip to CHS. My favorite bite was the glutinous rice dumplings filled with pork and peanuts. Do NOT miss this. Additionally, they serve creative cocktails and non alcoholic drinks (like the coconut one) that remind me of my childhood. I always write reviews a few weeks after the fact because if I still feel motivated to do so, it means something really stuck. And XBB definitely occupies a special morsel in my memory.

This was my husband's and my first time visiting and it did not disappoint! We are always up for trying recommended dishes at new restaurants and our waiter recommended we get the okonomiyaki which is essentially a Japanese cabbage pancake! Get it with an egg and pork candy on top for extra flavor. It's delicious.
Be the first to ReplyLots of good choices here, pretty much the whole menu.
Get the cabbage pancake and green curry with local fish. We had flounder. The other items were all standout. Id return in a heartbeat. Great place
Be the first to ReplySolid neighborhood gem hiding in plain site.
Low key vibe and laid back atmosphere pair well with quality dishes across a diverse menu. Fresh ingredients combine with punchy flavors to make this restaurant worth venturing away from the higher trafficked areas.
