Z & Y Bistro San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Tastiest Restaurant in Chinatown! We came here to check
Tastiest Restaurant in Chinatown! We came here to check out their infamous Peking Duck and it did NOT disappoint! Here is what we ordered: Peking duck: Crispy and came with authentic chewy wrappers. Sliced pork belly in garlic sauce: "crunchy" and bursting with chilli garlic flavors Szechuan pork intestine: Some of THE best and perfectly spicy Pork and crab XLB: Skin was a little thick but it was tasty and lots of soup Beef in flaming chili oil: classic Spicy Clams: amazingly juicy and completely infused with spice We will be back to try the fish in flaming chili oil next. Every dish was super tasty. The restaurant was quite packed so definitely make resos.
I'm honestly stuck between 4.
5-5 stars for this restaurant. I first came here to celebrate a birthday, and we had reserved a table on a Saturday night with a party of 9 and had reserved two ducks. Mind you, we reserved our table to be right at opening time. 4:30pm, and we were seated almost right away upon arrival. I suggest parking at Portsmouth Square Garage since it's a pretty close walk to Z & Y Peking. If you're walking down Jackson St. before hitting Kearny St., Z&Y Peking would be on your left hand side, not the right as its sister restaurant Z & Y are on the same street. OKAY ONTO THE FOOD The food was SO GOOD & Tasty! We had ordered quite a few items as we had a large group and it was a first time for most of the group. The peking duck (which you HAVE to reserve unless you're lucky) was seriously amazing - the skin was super crisp and the typical gainy texture of duck wasn't apparent when paired with its sides- or even by itself. We had also ordered the Miso Sea Bass (8.5/10), Clams (9/10), Cucumber Salad (9/10), Potstickers (10/10, and I couldn't stop eating them lmfao), Spicy Wontons (7/10), Dan Dan Noodles (9/10), Fried Rice (8/10), Xiao Long Bao (10/10) and Scallion Pancakes (7.5/10). The food were pretty good portions but if you have a large group, I might double up on the order if you're extra hungry. Honestly, it was a nice spot and I appreciated the atmosphere the restaurant gave. Our waiters were pretty kind and was nice about the corkage fee (I believe it was $25 per bottle) as we had brought our own wine. We were seated downstairs, so if you're seated downstairs mind your steps for sure! The bathroom downstairs is apparently much more spacious than the one upstairs.
First time dining here.
Heard about it in a tv show with Martin Yan in it. So thought I would give it a try. Need to reserve in advance especially the Peking Duck. They cut the duck beside the bar. The bread/wrapper of the Peking Duck is like a tortilla and not the white bun kind. But I think it's better this way so that you can taste the duck more and you don't get full easily. The duck was very good, juicy and a great ratio of duck meat and duck skin. Service was very efficient and friendly. Love the ambiance, it gives like a bistro feel and not like a traditional Chinese restaurant. Everything we ordered was great. The xlb was delicious but the skin was a bit thick, however the meat and juices inside were so good. I don't really eat the skin anyway.

Well, it's been over four years since my last visit when I was left in a meh mood by their generic urban bistro fare. But alas, they've changed course to a Peking duck purveyor, and this time, it worked. Now that redirection changed the price point because half a Peking Duck cost $48. No surprise but definitely a commitment for a solitary diner. I was ready to take the plunge though. It came all sliced up with the crispy skin attached to each piece (photo: https://yelp.to/IZrXzw_omU). It came accompanied by thin pancakes, green onions, cucumber spears, and thick hoisin sauce they simply refer to as 'paste'. It was quite the delicious treat. Since man can't live on duck alone, I had the $12 Avocado Salad which was almost as rich as the duck (photo: https://yelp.to/qzmchcm-vk). Hope the duck stays. FOOD - 4 stars...yum, duck AMBIANCE - 4 stars...still maintained its modern design SERVICE - 3.5 stars...not overly friendly but efficient TOTAL - 4 stars...smart move to focus on duck RELATED - Exploring Chinatown? My first experience at this restaurant left much to be
My first experience at this restaurant left much to be desired. Despite making a reservation for 6:45 PM, the hostess was consistently rude and unapologetic. She wouldn't even inform us of the wait time for seating despite our reservation. Unfortunately, we had to seek dinner elsewhere. It's disappointing and they seem to have similar issues at their Z&Y restaurant. It feels like they're deliberately creating unnecessary drama around their reputation. For those considering dining here, I'd suggest exploring other options in San Francisco for Peking duck to avoid disappointment and save your money.

We came for the Duck Made reservations but I guess needed reservations for the Duck but no one told us when reservations was made Food was good solid B Ambiance c+ Service was good (A) If I couldn't have Duck I wouldn't go back but would return to try the Duck
Worst duck in sf.
Not one Chinese customer. Tough and dry. They acted as if they were doing us a favor by waiting on us.

Food is very good, ambiance is nice and price is fair.
Highly recommends it. The service is interesting. They cut down the ducks in the lobby, it's entertaining
We celebrated my son's 20th birthday here.
Overall good experience and ambiance. Reservations were made a week prior and we had to pre-order the Peking Duck, Sea Baas, and Dungenous Crab. All our dishes tasted great! 1 star off for slow service. Not to the point where we wouldn't come back.

For a place that specializes in Peking duck, this place has a long long way to go. I suppose it would be good enough for those who have never had Peking Duck before and had no comparison or had no idea how it's supposed to taste. It was also a very chaotic dinner experience where the hostess was confused as to where the reserved table was located at and took us on a "tour" of both floors of the restaurant. Then the timing of when the dishes were served was problematic. Our group finished all the food we ordered except for the duck and we were waiting for more than 15 minutes (after we finished all other dishes) for the duck to arrive. Multiple times we wondered if the server missed our order. The worst part was we saw the duck being served to other tables even though they arrived later than us. We noticed that those tables consisted of all non-asian guests. Not sure if it was intentional or not but certainly not a good feeling to receive disparate treatment and it was quite obvious that there was a prioritization of service to those tables. It's a shame given that this is an Asian owned/managed business in Chinatown.

A solid Peking Duck restaurant! Was craving Peking Duck so bad and decided to go here since it's the sister restaurant to Chili House which is still under repair. Service was great. The ambiance caters to the more modern vibe but still maintains authentic delicious food. We ordered the soup dumplings, Truffle Shrimp Fried Rice and of course the Peking Duck. The dumplings were delicious! I appreciate how the wrappers didn't fall apart when picking them up so no broth goes to waste. The Truffle Shrimp Fried Rice was good but not ground breaking. Probably will try another dish next time we go instead of getting it. And lastly the Duck! So good, juicy and flavorful. Make sure you get this when you go. Highly recommend making a reservation for your table. We went on a Friday night around 5:30pm and by 5:45pm a lot of people starting coming. By around 6:30 the front was crowded with people waiting for a seat. Remember to call in advance if you want the duck!
Z&Y Peking Duck delivered an exceptional dining experience
Z&Y Peking Duck delivered an exceptional dining experience that exceeded our expectations. Celebrating a birthday, we indulged in an array of dishes, including the Peking duck, Peking duck with caviar, XLB, dumplings, Beef Chow mein, Chicken fried rice, Ma po tofu, and pea sprouts with garlic. Each dish was a jam packed with flavors and left us wanting more! What truly elevated our experience was the impeccable service. The servers were attentive, efficient, and went above and beyond to ensure our celebration was memorable. Their attention to detail and genuine warmth added an extra layer of joy to the evening. Contrary to some reviews mentioning long waits, we didn't encounter any delays. Our reservation was honored promptly, allowing us to dive into our dinner without delay. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience.

Pretty good, I came on a busier Saturday night for dinner, but was met with a very short wait under 5 minutes for a party of 3 despite 4-5 parties in front of me, maybe an error on the staff's part, unsure. It was very quick to order which I liked and the food was damn good. Portions were mostly fine, but some it can be hit or miss, one dish was very small for its price while the others were large. The Spicy Duck dish was so flavorful and hearty, lots of add-ins with it. The fried rice was also tasty and well portioned. However the pork belly with spicy garlic sauce had underwhelming portions for the size. The service was okay, I had ordered the string beans, and asked the staff for it since we were midway through the experience and all the food had came out, and the waiter said that if I wanted it now I should have ordered it earlier. But I did order it earlier and he forgot, later the manager I'm assuming came up to give me the check and stated that she removed it since I never received it. weird, but otherwise the food was good.

I was really looking forward to this place, but it was a disappointment. On the positive side, we didn't order a peking duck ahead of time, but they offered whole and half ducks on order--and the duck was extremely good! Sadly, everything else we ordered was mediocre at best, while being pretty high-priced. The green beans, Beijing potstickers, and frog were almost too salty to eat. All of this said, I get that restaurants have good and bad days, so I can write it off to that. What I can't write off was the shoddy and aggressive treatment from one of the waitstaff--the guy actually grabbed a spoon out of my hand and barked "I'll do that" when I picked up my spoon and bowl to pull them closer. He was very short when our out-of-town guests asked questions, and actually walked off while they were asking and never answered them. He tossed our items on the table with no comments or niceties. I've lived in SF since 1991 and get that different restaurants have different vibes, but this one was pretty unpleasant.
Great Food! Highly recommend! Especially the original
Great Food! Highly recommend! Especially the original dumplings and definitely Peking duck
Average peking duck place compare to Oakland and LA.
There is no flavor in the duck meat. The roasted skin is good but the whole experience lack flavor. The duck can obviously handle more than 10 wraps but they will charge you for the extra wraps and will also charge additionally for extra condiments. Most item on the menu is good, some are just average and you can get the same thing at any number of Sichuan style Chinese restaurants all over the Bay Area. I would not come back here simply because there are at least 3 other peking duck place in the SF Bay Area that are better IMO.
The service is unacceptable here.
We made reservations and the hostess guided us to the basement when the table was actually upstairs. We pre reserved the duck and ordered a few dishes, finished all the food and the duck still didn't arrive. However other tables that arrived same time as us already got the duck. Furthermore it seems like the management here instruct to prioritize non-asian guests by offering better service. When we politely followed up on our duck, the server ignored us and did not affirm a yes or a no. At first we thought it may be a language barrier. We had to follow up again and then he sounded sarcastic and said "your duck will eventually come" At the same time they keep on checking in on the table next to us with non-asian guests asking them how their experience is. Racism at is finest.
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants that I've tried in
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants that I've tried in SF's Chinatown, alongside the other Z&Y. The Peking Duck is phenomenal, and in our opinions, about as good as it gets anywhere outside of Beijing. The skin was crispy to perfection, and the duck itself was so juicy, tender, and tasty. If you want Peking Duck, I'm almost confident that this is one of the best places you can get it. We ordered a full duck and it was the perfect amount for 3 people. All the other dishes were equally solid too. The Beef Roll Pancake and Beijing Bean Sauces Noodles were both very tasty and great complements to the duck. Nothing particularly memorable, but very good nonetheless. The vibes inside are great - very modern, upscale, and classy feeling. It's more on the pricier side ($160 for 3) but if that's not a concern, definitely worth checking this place out!

We had a reservation at 7:30 and we checked in 15 mins early. The host didn't mention that there would be a long wait for a table. We waited until 8:15 when we gave up to find another restaurant. The person who in charge told me that I need to be patient since we had a big party. Don't feel the restaurant respect the customer's time. Don't recommend to anyone unless you have time to kill.
Authentic Peking Duck is the best in town
The only authentically prepared, and the best possible Peking Duck found in San Francisco. Perfect for celebrating the upcoming Year of the Dragon (Lunar New Year is February 10). Chef Lijun Han, a Michelin Bib Gourmand chef for many years, delivers the best of the best, and all items on his menu are stellar. Another wonderful dish to try is Miso Sea Bass, marinated for many hours, tender and delicious!
