Every March I'm in Vienna for the ECR meeting - but I am still looking for a hotel at which I would like to stay again the following year. After reading the Yelp reviews, I truly thought that the search had ended but unfortunately I will have to try out something new next year again.I paid 515$ for two nights which I consider upper tier even for a hotel in this location (1st district) and time of the meeting where all hotels are commonly overbooked. Thus, I had relatively high expectations. The location is certainly great - most subway lines go through Stephansplatz and it was also very easy to get here from the airport using the City Airport Train (CAT). The hotel is easy to find although the entrance is not really welcoming from the outside. Another minus is that all employees and guests seem to go here for a smoke break (which remains a problem in Vienna) so it didn't really give off a luxury feel. The entrance hall was much nicer and the staff was very polite. The room was in very good shape but also pretty basic. Alot of wooden decor which would also be appropriate in a hostel. The long dark hallways leading to your room also reminded me of a hostel. The bathroom was very clean but had an annoying self-closing door and not a real shower, only a tub with a very small glass coverage. So to avoid spraying water over the whole floor, I had to kinda squeeze myself in the corner. The selection in the mini bar was disappointing. At least there was free water which apparently is also their (filtered) tap water - but there are no bottles to go. TV was relatively small to watch from the bed due to the room layout but other than that good. WiFi was free and fast.Based on the other reviews I also had high expectations regarding the breakfast. Unfortunately, the opening times mentioned everywhere (!) in the hotel are inaccurate - weekdays breakfast is only offered until 10AM instead of 11AM. They made an exception for me when I arrived there were hungover but neglected a fellow American on the table next to me another coffee which is unacceptable in my opinion. I love an included breakfast as everyone else and the offered buffet is pretty good. The highlight is certainly the view right on Stephansplatz and Stephansdom when enjoying your breakfast which alone is worth 1 star. But service was only moderately friendly also the next day and the buffet was unattended so in case something was out I couldn't ask for service.Overall, location and breakfast view are big advantages for this hotel but inadequate price-quality ratio and the very average rooms make this a 3* rating at the most. I am truly surprised by the overall high ratings here but it seems that a lot of people only rated the buffet and its view but never were true hotel guests which may explain this.
