Grand Hotel Karel V Utrecht Reviews from The Last Year
Super nice in the center
Everything is great! Already the reception, then the room in the annex, very comfortable, clean spacious. The convenient central location for visiting the city and the enchanting setting. I loved !!! Prices are fair We tried the restaurant, like the hotel, it was perfect and even the chef spoke French!! Nice, adorable waiter The only downside is only for breakfast not enough choice in pastries or cakes...because we don't eat eggs, bacon etc. Free parking !! I highly recommend
Unfortunately you won't find the 5th star...
Perfect location in beautiful Utrecht. Comfortable parking for 25 euros right next to the hotel. The inner courtyard is very well maintained. But check-in was difficult. We booked a room through the hotel website. When we arrived we were forced to pay an upgrade of 40 euros because we had apparently booked a room where we were not allowed to stay with a dog. Unfortunately there is no option to select the category on the website. An additional 40 euros for the dog. A bit overpriced, but you accept that. At least there was a pillow and bowls. The rooms were very spacious but not very comfortable. Stained canopy over the bed. Unfortunately you look in vain for the 5th star...
A truly exceptional experience that embodies passion and excellence.
A wonderful stay at this superb 5 Star hotel in the heart of the beautiful city of Utrecht. The wonderful Koen van der Berg and the team are the epitome of excellent customer services and high standards. This is my 4th visit and it won’t be my last. From the well appointed rooms and beautiful grounds to the excellent facilities, this has to be one of my favourite hotels. The Michelin Star Karel 5 Restaurant is simply sublime and an experience not to be missed. A culinary masterpiece awaits that scintillates the tastebuds and reveals delightful experiences in every bite. Chef Leon & his team bring theatre to the table. The passion and knowledge of the team ensures diners are captivated from the start of the performance. The star of the show is the ingredients and how they have been elevated into works of art and brought to life with classic, delicate finishes. I enjoyed every dish that was served on the meat & fish free set menu. Each one championing to be my favourite, only to push me into a quandary to decide which was the most memorable. A truly exceptional experience that embodies passion and excellence.
High tea Karel V Utrecht
Had a high tea at Karel V, expectations were high for this 5 star location. Beforehand we got a bowl of lobster soup (bisque to speak in their French terms). I think it's daring at a high tea, you don't ask if you like this. The soup was cold and awkward to eat from a large bowl with a teaspoon. As for the scones, they were so mini, flat and hard, and the accompanying cream and jam was strangely enough for 40 instead of 4 scones. Crab salad sandwich didn't look good and was soggy. Salmon sandwich was fine. As for the sweet part; We couldn't write home about that either. I get it all better at a bakery, there was one so sweet that it was simply impossible to eat. Much of the rest of the sweet was left behind. And all under the guise of more luxurious snacks. Well, forget about the luxury and dare to ask €49.00 for it. SCANDALOUS!! Far above the price of other (and better) high teas we have had. This was once but never again.
Pearl with spots
There are 5-star rooms here, but only as rooms or suites in the main building. The standard drops significantly in the "Romanesque wing". This part of the building with around 16 rooms ("luxurious double/twin rooms") is in the first row by the small park in the inner courtyard. It's hard to believe that the room is 33 square meters (rooms 150 ff), it looks smaller. The special thing is that you have a complete view of the rooms from the garden. If that bothers you or you're not an exhibitionist, you can close the curtains: but no more views! Because of my complaint about this, I received a free upgrade to the first floor (rooms 250 ff). This room has a half-floor in the pointed roof. Consequence: The base level with bed etc. is reduced from around 33 square meters to less than 18 square meters. Upstairs there is a small sofa, table, chair and a second TV. The way up is via a steep staircase (measured at 43°). This construction does not make the room spacious, but rather "built in". (Note: What is the point of the second TV? Are a western and a romantic film playing in loud competition?) It is difficult to get a view because there is only one narrow row of windows at waist height. A single folding window at a height of around 220cm can only be opened 5cm because of the internal blind. Breakfast It would not really be worth mentioning if it weren't for the completely cold and therefore almost tasteless fruit salad. For a cheese country like the Netherlands, the quality of the cheese platter and sausage on offer is a complete disgrace. The fatty farmed salmon does not exactly deserve 5 stars either, all in all unworthy of such a hotel. I have had breakfasts that were more than twice as good in many 3-star hotels for half the price. Or he should take a look at what breakfast looks like in the Oriental (BKK) or the Peninsula (HKK). Is there anything good? Yes. Everything is very well furnished, in a modern, well-kept condition. The location of the hotel is ideal. You are right on the canal or in the city center. The staff throughout the hotel are also competent and friendly. Restaurant You have to differentiate between the bistro and the actual restaurant, also the breakfast room. Bistro: Except for 4-5 tables in the middle, you sit at small tables lined up along the long wall. If the place is fully booked, it is so full and loud that communication requires some effort. 3 course menu (47€) or a la carte for a few euros more. The selection is manageable, 3 starters (16€), 3 main courses (27€), 3 desserts (12€) The quality is very modest. 3 examples: Starter, scallops with vegetables?? You find a tablespoon full of vegetables that are quite indefinable in terms of taste and not scallops, but perhaps half a scallop, cut up by the chef into about 10 tiny pea-sized pieces. Main course, duck breast. Actually, every amateur cook knows that after searing the roast, you put it in the oven for about 30 minutes at 80°C, then the breast becomes tender and pink, which the chef obviously did not do, because I got raw, tough meat. Dessert. Ice cream coupe Dame blanche. Most people will probably know what that is. You are served a small scoop of ice cream the size of a golf ball with a chocolate coating. One bite = 12 euros In summer, have a coffee or tea in the courtyard on the terrace Drinking a glass of wine is certainly an alternative.
First class experience
Beautiful hotel, conveniently located in walking distance of Hoog Catharijnen. Very attentive and welcoming staff, gorgeous bedrooms with comfortable beds. The rooms have complimentary bathrobes and slippers. Breakfast is first class and the dining area is stunning as is the rest of the building. There’s a small pool with a whirlpool and sauna. Everything is clean. There are plenty of towels and shampoo and shower gel available. We stayed for two nights/three days with 5 adults ranging from 20-56 year old.
Wonderful hotel in a beautiful location
What a wonderful hotel in the middle of Utrecht in beautiful surroundings. The staff is very service-oriented and does their best to please you. Beds are excellent and the hotel is spotless throughout.
Elegant and relaxing hotel in a fabulous location
This is a beautiful hotel in a super location. Canal at the front, and straight into the old town at the back, everything about the Karel V is perfect. Pristine interiors, wonderfully restored from its previous lives as a hospital and monastery, it oozes elegance and luxury. The breakfast in the newly refurbished dining room is a real highlight, and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. I came here for business but will return with my family! A very special place.
A gem in the old town
We stayed at the Karol V for 4 nights and we were very impressed with the location, staff and general quality of the hotel. It was easy to find and parking is available. Our room was in the new Roman wing and was light, airy, quiet and very comfortable. We had drinks in the beautiful gardens and dinner in the Bistro, both delightful. The location is perfect for exploring the old town on foot and we didn’t need the car at all. We visited Amsterdam for the day by train which was interesting but very busy. We were glad to return to the tranquility of the Karol V and Utrecht.
Couldn’t get dinner
Overall a nice hotel good location but yesterday we tried to have dinner in the Bistro at 6.30. It was empty but we were told it was fully booked. We went into town and had a pleasant meal by the canal. We came back at 7,45. There were four tables being served outside and it was empty inside. How bizarre. Strange that a 5 star hotel doesn’t want to sell food
