🤮 1/5 - I've never been here before and my wife had been here many

I've never been here before and my wife had been here many years ago. I'm not sure why I never went here with clients back in my corporate sales days or just in general; I love pizza, am a great critic of pizza and worked at a pizzeria back in Jersey from age 12-22. Here goes the realest review possible: Walked in with my beautifully dressed wife for date night at 6:45p. In line before us was an early 30's couple, the man had sweatpants and crocks, and a tee shirt, female wore drab attire which looked like a dress. A group of early twenties men were paying for their check at a table in front of us and 4 out of 5 of them had PJ pants on; all wore tee shirts. This got me fired up a little bit but let it play out in respect for date nightWe got seated right away by an energetic and positive host. I took a quick look at the menu to see the prices and saw how expensive it was. The carpet was not matching the drapes. We were dressed according to a $200 dinner, a majority of the place dressed like they were getting a bacon egg and cheese at the bagel store at 7:30am on a Sunday. Least expensive glass of wine was $16 and least expensive bottle was $65. We expected that and dressed accordingly. We ordered the chopped salad - excellentI ordered the Bronx pizza and my wife ordered a mushroom pizza and that was the "only pizza they didn't have" so she ordered the Brooklyn. First bite of pizza - bland. Second bite - bland. I took a bit of the Brooklyn - bland. Crust was great. I ate my pizza while trying to figure this whole situation out. Place was packed and people seemed to think this is good pizza. The sauce tasted like the sauce someone tries to make when they make pizza at home. It almost tasted like it was right out of the can. There's no way that sauce was cooking for 8 hours in a cauldron, low flame, stirring every 15 minutes. We laughed it all off while eating every last bite. We knew we would never come back but part of me wants to come back to make sure we weren't there on an off night where the cook didn't do the sauce correctly. Probably not gonna happen but I'm going to be forever curious. We got the check and saw the tomfoolery that tied it all together: we got the auto 18% tip. We caught it but I'm assuming 20-30% of this clientele doesn't catch it. We would have tipped 20% but stuck with the 18 because I took this as an insult. I certainly did not add a tip as they suggested on the bill 8-15% more on top if 18%. Total joke all around. But it's working for these guys. Place was packed and reservations are hard to get. I chalk it up to a great business model to take advantage of people who don't really know what good pizza tastes like. We'll never go back to Jon & Vinny's. We will continue to frequent Stella Barra on Main as that's the best apples to apples comparison. That's my first review in like 8 years I think. I had to do it to help others out who just don't know what's up.
