La Vie Honolulu Reviews from The Last Year
What a fantastic French food experience!
What a fantastic dining experience! It was actually my first proper French cuisine experience and everything’s beyond my expectation! The dinner set wasn’t as expensive as I thought and the food was quite filling too (small portion is our typical perspective when it comes to French cuisine, isn’t it?) Every single dish was clearly introduced and explained when serving, every single server’s so welcoming and well-trained. They were all very attentive. Of course the dishes were not only fancy, but also very scrumptious. Piano was played all night long— very nice vibe if you’re in a date (but I was there with friends— a reunion dinner so it’s actually hard to talk). In a nutshell, everything is top-notch! We all enjoyed our dinner every much and I highly recommend it!
Excellent
The food and service is excellent. Very creative cocktails and 2 choices of either a seafood or meat tasting menu with 4 different dishes. All were amazingly creative and the servers were very knowledgeable about the ingredients. There is a bar section to this restaurant (no tablecloths) or a dining section with views to the ocean if you sit by the rail. We were late near the end of the evening and the wait staff was still very accommodating and did not rush us. It can be a little cool at night- as is an open air restaurant. Highly recommend!
Terrible Service
Was excited to check out the restaurant while staying at the hotel this week. The restaurant wasn't at all busy, so I was seated quickly without a reservation. The bartender was busy with personal conversations at the end of the bar, so I was unable to order after sitting there for 15 minutes. The host stand transferred me to a table, where I sat for another 15 minutes without service. I went back to the host stand and asked if they could send someone to take my dinner order. He finally came over, but then forgot to put my order in. My entrée came out 45 minutes later, with the food runner thanking me for my patience. Not only did the server not address the long wait directly with me, but he never even came back to check on me after the food was dropped off. The duck breast and the side dish were both cool in temperature. I waited a few minutes for him to return so I could send it back, but he never came. At this point, I didn't want to go to the host stand a third time and ask for a server, so I just ate it. Never saw him again until he brought the check. One would think he would ask how everything was at that point, but nope. He put the check down and told me he added 20% to my bill and walked off. I didn't end up complaining about the service at La Vie until checking out of the hotel later in the week, so by the time I did, my words fell on deaf ears. Hopefully the server will use the $25 tip he added to my bill to purchase a help book on exercising tact and the restaurant will consider just how incredibly tacky it is to add gratuity to everyone's check in substitution of providing the type of service that would warrant it. This is not the type of experience one would expect at this price point.
