WOW! This place takes you on a food adventure! My boyfriend brought me here as a surprise for our 4th anniversary. I couldn't even guess what the restaurant was because of its nondescript exterior. The front of the restaurant is just a flat brick wall, and only when you look closely, you'd see a tiny little sign at the bottom left: morihiro. The service here is phenomenal. The staff greets you and welcomes you in, leading you to your table, adorned with a little handwritten note: "Happy Anniversary!" Upon looking at the other tables, we saw other notes personalized to the guests who were coming that night, "happy birthday", "welcome back", and so on. The counter was like a front row seating area to a theater - the chefs in the kitchen being the show. It was fascinating watching them meticulously at work. The counter is $400/person, but you are served personally by Chef Morihiro himself, and the experience is 3-4 hours. There was a last minute opening to the counter, which is normally booked, and the table next to us decided to upgrade. Still, since we were seated in the center of the "theater", we still got a wonderful viewing of what was being cooked up.Since everyone's experience will be different, I will just mention some things that popped out at me:- the Gunkan Uni was probably the best uni I've ever had. It was smooth, just the right temperature, and bursting with umami flavor. - The seared kinmedai and baby barracuda were flavors that I've never had before! The searedness made it taste so...creamy! - housemade tofu with shoyu - this sounds so plain jane, but it absolutely wasn't. I don't think I've ever had tofu that tasted so perfect. It was smooth like silk, had the perfect consistency...just...WOW. - the tamagoyaki was ETHEREAL. I have never tasted such light, fluffy, souffle-like tamago. It was a light yet rich sponge cake like texture. I could not get enough. We also got a bonus little dessert - the Chef's Banana! It literally looked like a banana, but the yellow "peel" was white chocolate, and the inside was banana bread! Paired with the ganache...oh MAN! It was divine! I loved the whimsicality of the dish, yet the flavors were intricate and unique. As a little end of the evening gift, they send you off with a to-go box of Japanese whiskey canelle....which we promptly ate at the scene. You must! It is soft on the inside, with a little burnt crispness on the outside. Just perfect.I had requested at the beginning of the meal that I did not do wasabi, but they accidentally gave me it on our first sushi dish. When I mentioned it to them, they were extremely apologetic and promptly made us a new batch. Every dish from there on, they were very diligent about separating my sushi (no wasabi), from my boyfriend's (wasabi). I truly don't mind mistakes, as it is a part of life, but the way they handled their mistake was with the utmost grace, and I appreciated that very much. The staff even personally sent us off as we left the restaurant, holding the door open and standing outside! Thank you Chef Mori and your staff for such a warm, intimate, and adventurous experience! It is no surprise that your restaurant won its first Michelin Star within a year of opening! Truly well deserved! ごちそうさまでした!
